The Amelia Givin Library was constructed during the public library movement of the late 19th century, which was fueled by various additional philanthropic efforts of organizations such as the Carnegie Foundation. The building is an example of the popular late 19th-century Romanesque Revival style. The library was designed by Pittsburgh architect James T. Steen using classic Richardsonian elements, including broad round arches, use of towers with conical roofs, rusticated ashlar masonry, battened foundation walls, banks of windows, deeply set windows and doors, squat columns, and carved ornament. Club Dedicates Meditation Garden York Day Nursery Holds with “Meditation brings us peace.” Bowman noted that 26 plants, many of which are native species, were planted with the help of 17 volunteers from her GCY committee. She thanked them by presenting each volunteer with a pair of pink gardening gloves. Bowman said that GCY has pledged to maintain the garden. GCY’s hanging baskets in downtown York show GCY’s ongoing commitment to the local community. Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania past president Chris Leskosky shared that her sister fought breast cancer for eight years. Her local club also has a cancer garden. Rudy Park contributed to the project by allowing the pink bench, rather than a blue bench; supplying workers; and delivering water trucks. Only yellow daylilies from the original planting break the pink color code. Also remaining is the hard-surface path in the shape of a turtle with a sundial in the middle. Jess Dubbs contributed graphic design work, including the part of the Pink Power logo appearing on the bench plaque, and also attended the dedication to take photographs. At the end of the dedication, eight breast cancer survivors stepped forward and received two pink roses each. Pink cookies and pink lemonade were served by the GCY committee.

Relay For Life Event Raises Funds
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of York event on June 21 and 22 featured a celebratory Survivor and Caregiver Walk. Participants in the fundraising event raised more than $300,000.
York County Libraries vice president of finance and advancement Susan Davidson-Linton (left) and York County Libraries president Robert F. Lambert (right) accepted a $2,500 donation on behalf of the Martin Library Association from York Traditions Bank president and CEO Eugene J. Draganosky (center). The EITC funding supports library educational improvement programs, including author visits and the incentive-based summer learning program. Martin Library is a branch of York County Libraries that is located at 159 E. Market St., York. A PA Forward Gold Star library, it provides programs and resources to support the success of all members of the community.
Ice Cream Social
A total of 39 teams and more than 650 people participated in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of York event on June 21 and 22 at the York Expo Center. More than $300,000 was raised to support the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer. Funds raised help the society provide free information and support for people facing the disease and fund cancer research. Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event. Donations can still be made by visiting www.RelayForLife.org/payork. For information about next year’s event, readers may contact Ashley Leary at Ashley.leary@cancer.org or 717-848-2229.

The Plant It Pink Breast Cancer Meditation Garden in John C. Rudy County Park was dedicated on June 26. Along with a pink bench, the newly planted garden features pink perennials, such as cosmos and coneflowers, selected by the Garden Club of York’s (GCY) Plant It Pink Committee, led by Sue Bowman. The plants were chosen to engage all senses. Pink roses and annuals such as petunias were added to the wish list by Denise DelGrosso Gilliland. She is the founder of Pink Power, a local 501(c)(3) organization that raises money for breast cancer-related causes. Using the proceeds from its annual Girls Night Out, Pink Power supports four causes: WellSpan York Cancer Center, UPMC Breast Care Center, Penn State Cancer Institute Genetics Program, and Pink Ink Project. Early in the planning process, Bowman consulted with Elaine Zieders, of An E-Z Design Company, about the choice of plants. For instance, for the limestonerich soil, red bud trees would be better than dogwood. Invincibelle Spirit II hydrangeas came from Spring Meadow, which supports cancer research from its nationwide sales to wholesalers. Four local nurseries supplied plants as well. At the dedication, DelGrosso Gilliland thanked her Pink Power committee, then listed the top 10 reasons to meditate, beginning

The What the Food Trucks festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Penn Park, 100 E. College Ave., York. Last year, roughly 20,000 people visited the event to support York city by patronizing local and regional food trucks, vendors, breweries and wineries. At this year’s event, more than 40 food trucks will line three sides of Penn Park. The event is free for all, and food and beverages are pay-as-you-go. The event will feature a beer garden, as well as a limited selection of beverages. No outside alcohol is permitted. This year’s Community Corner will feature more than 12 nonprofits and organizations that will have information about the services they provide, as well as interactive activities for children. The splash pad will also be turned on for everyone to use. Live music will be played throughout the event at the main stage by the basketball courts and by a traveling musician around the park. The courts will be left open for neighborhood play. The music is provided thanks to the support of the Cultural Alliance of York County’s Cultural Impact
Awards and Brewery Products. This year’s What the Food Trucks grand marshal is Korey Warner Knight, widow of York supporter Douglas Knight, who died at the beginning of 2019. Korey and Doug were major supporters of the food truck festivals since the beginning. The grand marshal has the privilege to skip the lines, as do members of the Legion of Eats - people marked by their masks for donations made during Give Local York - who each have a one-time line skipper pass. Parking around the outside of the park is prohibited after 6 a.m. on Sept. 1. Cars still there will be towed by the York City Police. Parking shuttles will run from the York College of Pennsylvania Rail Trail lot and the Susquehanna Commerce Center to the park from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after the event. This event is organized by CrocodileDog Marketing, which has been running various events in and around the city of York for more than 10 years. For more information, readers may visit www.whatthefoodtrucks.com.
Pet Portrait Event Slated Orendorff Studios, 402 Wheatfield St., York, has announced the second day of its third annual BARk in the Studio event. Fifteen-minute dog portrait mini sessions will be available on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All time slots on the first day of the event, Sunday, Nov. 17, have been booked. There is a fee for the session, plus a required donation of a 15pound bag of dog food per dog. Additional dogs can be accommodated for an additional donation. Orendorff Studios will donate the dog food to BARk as part of BARk’s annual pet food drive, which helps local dogs in need.
Participants will be able to choose up to five images from an online viewing gallery to be edited after the event. They will receive the session fee back in credit to use toward the purchase of digital images, prints, statuettes, canvases or other items such as a calendar print from last year’s sessions. Each dog will receive a swag bag of donated items from dog-related businesses. Sessions are by appointment only. To schedule a session, readers may send a message to Orendorff Studios on Facebook. The session fee will be collected at the time of booking to reserve a spot.
Weis Markets Represented At National Night Out
Weis Markets employees (from left) Leigh Lauer, Aiden Clark, Alyssa Boyer, Jena Bixler, Morgan Gilmore, Jessica Jonawawitch, Chrissy Jonawawitch and Hope Gebhart grilled hot dogs and gave out samples of Weis brand ice cream to attendees of West Manchester Township’s National Night Out at Sunset Lane Park on Aug. 6. Weis Markets was one of the event’s sponsors. A giveaway of children’s play balls took place at West Manchester Township’s National Night Out. This is the third year customers at the Weis Markets Roosevelt Avenue store donated balls for the event. The play balls were put into a huge tarp and attached to a ladder truck. West Manchester Township Fire Chief Clifton Laughman rappelled down and let the ropes go, so the balls fell to the children waiting below.
