ARRIVING LATE?

The 50th Greater York CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 13. Walkers and sponsors may preregister at www.crophungerwalk.org/yorkpa. In 1970, York County held what is known as the first official CROP Hunger Walk. The more than 1,200 walkers started at Continental Square in York city and walked to Spring Grove. The Rev. Bill Sowers was the chair of the first walk and is honorary chair of the 50th walk. He is actively involved in organizing and promoting the event alongside the Rev. Patrick Walker, chair of the 50th walk. This year, to celebrate the milestone, Sowers and Milton Leake, who has volunteered for the CROP Walk for more than 20 years, are planning to walk a total of 50 miles via 12 shorter warm-up walks on Mondays and Fridays over the course of the six weeks leading up to the event. Their send-off walk took place on Aug. 30. Members of the community are welcome to join them for their upcoming walks. On Mondays, they will retrace the route of the second CROP Walk from Continental Square in York to Samuel E. Lewis State Park and back to Continental Square. On Fridays, they will re-create the

first walk from Continental Square to Spring Grove Middle School. To view starting locations and times, readers may visit https://50thcropwalk.com/warm -up-for-the-50th-crop-walk/. Walker is also planning to travel 50 miles. He will walk the Heritage Rail Trail from John C. Rudy County Park to the Maryland border and back from Wednesday, Oct. 9, through Saturday, Oct. 12. He plans to walk his final few miles on Oct. 13 as part of the CROP Walk. Individuals are invited to consider joining Sowers and Leake’s walks or taking part in one of four shorter walks. Walkers will start at one of four starting points - to the north, south, east or west - and walk to the square, where a celebration will take place. The four starting points are St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St.; St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 947 N. George St.; Fourth United Methodist Church, 1067 E. Market St.; and St. Paul Lutheran Church, South George Street and Springettsbury Avenue. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the four sites, with walkers starting at 2 p.m. Dogs and other pets must be on leashes. The celebration at the Old

People of all ages are invited to take part in the 50th Greater York CROP Walk, set for Oct. 13. Walkers will be able to choose from four routes, all of which will end in the square, where a celebration will take place. Courthouse at Center Square will be at 2:30 p.m. WGAL’s Ron Martin, a York native, will serve as master of ceremonies and will give opening words and prayer. He will introduce the mayor of York and other dignitaries in attendance. The program will include music, dance, recognition of CROP Walk volunteers, and a thank you from the York County Food Bank, which is designated to receive funds from the walk. At 3:30 p.m., walkers will begin walking back to their starting point. There is no rain date. In the event of inclement weather, the celebration honoring CROP’s 50th year fighting world hunger will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 29 S. George St., York. This year’s goals are 1,200

walkers and $50,000 raised to fight hunger locally and around the world. A total of 25% percent of the money raised from the Greater York CROP Hunger Walk will remain in York County by supporting the York County Food Bank. The remaining 75% percent will be distributed through Church World Service to combat poverty and hunger nationally and internationally. Since beginning in York, CROP Walks have spread across the country, with more than 800 scheduled this year in the United States. Additional information is available at https://50thcrop walk.com/ or by emailing pwalker @cwsglobal.org. To learn more about York’s milestone event, readers may visit https:// 50thcropwalk.com.

The York County Operation Christmas Child volunteer team will host a special event. Grace Imanariyo, who received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift at the age of 10 while growing up in Rwanda, will share her story at two churches in the York area. The first event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., at Church of the Open Door, 8 Carlisle Court, York. The second program will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. at Genesis Church, 1405 Seven Valleys Road, York. Imanariyo was born in Rwanda as the youngest of four daughters. Her mother was a teacher, and her father worked to help retirees. Imanariyo will share how a simple shoebox gift impacted her life and the lives of

those around her. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization. Operation Christmas Child aims to provide children in need with shoebox gifts, filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. Operation Christmas Child partners with churches around the world as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities. These gifts are sent overseas to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease; they are also sent to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S. For additional information, readers may contact Lisa Byrne at 717-434-7079 or occyork@ gmail.com.

tank. Remnants of both the coal dock and water cistern can be seen during rides on the railroad today. The Stewartstown Railroad is an all-volunteer organization that was chartered in 1884. The line was started by a number of local merchants who wanted to get their wares to customers in Harrisburg and Baltimore in a time before there were interstate highways or even paved local roads. Nowadays, the railroad operates as a tourist line, offering scheduled trains during the year and special trains for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. Tickets for the steam train rides may be purchased in the station on the day of the ride using cash only or in advance at www.stewartstownrailroadco.co m. Coal Company locomotive No. 85, called “Mack.” Mack is a 0-4-0 saddle tank engine, which means that it has four wheels and carries a water tank over its boiler, like a saddle on a horse. It was built in 1928 by the Vulcan Iron Works of Wilkes-Barre and is currently owned by John and Barney Gramling. a high council. While the stake president recommends a new bishop, the bishop is approved by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ First Presidency of Salt Lake City, Utah. A new bishopric is accepted by the common consent of ward members, and the bishop and his counselors are then set apart by the laying on of hands by those priesthood members in authority over them. Many of the bishopric members have prepared themselves for their positions by attending four years of seminary classes as young men and by serving a two-year mission. They generally have studied Scripture daily, have accepted a variety of callings, and have attended church faithfully throughout their years as members of the Church. Other men who have been called to assist the bishop are Ward executive secretary Brian Malcarne; Ward clerk Andy Smith; and Ward assistant clerk for finance Timothy Shetter.

A bishop generally serves upward of four to seven years in the bishopric, devoting a good deal of his time to perform the duties of the office, and just as all callings in the Church are part of a lay ministry, the bishopric positions are unpaid and filled by men who have prepared themselves to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others. In recognition of National Hunger Action Month in September, Giant Food Stores announced that its customers raised $780,676 to support local hunger relief efforts during the biannual Bag Hunger campaign. The company’s Bag Hunger campaign ran from Aug. 25 through Sept. 7 across all Giant and Martin’s stores. According to Feeding America, each dollar raised helps to provide at least 10 meals, meaning that the funds raised during Giant’s Bag Hunger campaign will fund more than 7.8 million meals. Funds raised during the campaign go to more than 100 hunger-relief partners, including food pantries across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Major recipient food banks include Philabundance, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, and York County Food Bank. Throughout September, GIANT associates volunteered and made donations at select food banks and pantries to celebrate the contributions. To learn more about the company’s hunger relief programs, readers may visit https://giantfood stores.com/ or https://martins foods.com/. Since 2008, Giant’s Bag Hunger fundraising campaigns have raised more than $12 million.

School District Appoints Quinones The West York Area School District board of directors announced the appointment of Ivan Quinones, district school safety and security coordinator, as a school security guard, as outlined in a resolution approved on Aug. 20 by the board. The school safety and security coordinator position that Quinones holds is a component of Senate Bill 1142, Act 44, signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf in June 2018. Going a step further to improve school safety measures, Act 67 of 2019 amended Article XXII-C of the Public School Code, to clarify that a school district may contract and/or employ school security guards with authority to carry firearms on school grounds subject to those individuals satisfying the applicable training and/or certification requirements specified in Section 1314-C of the Public School Code, 24 P.S. § 13-1314-C. In his role as safety and security coordinator, Quinones develops, implements, and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the district’s safety and security plan. This includes working with two district school

resource officers (SROs), event security, local law enforcement, and emergency responders. He also serves as the liaison to the statewide School Safety and Security Committee, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and other relevant outside entities. Quinones holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Maryland and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in public safety and administration. He served in the United States Marine Corps for four years prior to his career as commander with the Maryland State Police. Most recently, Quinones served as the director of public safety and security for all of the campuses of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Other notable accomplishments include work as an instructor for law enforcement and his role as an adviser to legislators regarding the development of Act 44 and on the PA Safety Task Force. Quinones also possesses all of the necessary training and certifications to appropriately fulfill the duties of an armed school security guard.
