“(The Europeans who first lived in this area) made practically everything they needed (from red clay): bedpans, roach traps, jugs‌â€? said Bob Hughes, potter-in-residence at Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. In his shop, located with other craftspersons’ shops on the ground floor of the CAHS main building, Bob has those very items on display. Because some of Lancaster County’s soils are rich in red clay, which can be easily fired, redware pottery was common among the Europeans who first moved into the area. “When I find roach traps, they usually smell like molasses,â€? Bob said, holding a small, conical vessel - almost like an old-fashioned beehive - in his hand. Roaches seeking molasses or honey with which the trap was baited would
crawl in and be stuck. The potter’s shop was reorganized this year, and Bob stocked the shelves with examples from his collection. There are shelves of crocks, jugs, vases, and inkwells, and there are even two shelves full of bundt pans and similar ring-shaped baking dishes. “I love the way everybody solved their problems a different way, Bob said, commenting on the variations in design. In contrast to the practical items, Bob also has a shelf of ring vases that are adaptations of designs spotted in places like the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. “I’ve turned them into story pots, Bob said. Pointing to a cheerful songbird, he added, “This bird is a 3-D interpretation of (one from) a fraktur. Redware production was relatively low-tech, and a farmer could work part time to produce the necessary vessels. In contrast, stoneware was a more involved process. Stoneware took over See CAHS pg 4

That is the kind of big vision that Emminger has for DSAA. Emminger’s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23 in 2014. Keep your eyes on the night sky, and you just might catch a glimpse of a friendly, flying witch making her way to the Lebanon Valley Expo Center to attend the Witches Fly North Antique and Artisan Show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5, in Lebanon, Pa. For 13 years, this event has showcased the best in early antiques, vintage wares, primitives, industrial, salvage and artistically created jewelry, clothing and more. It gets better with each passing year, and Witches Fly North 2019 is sure to please all attendees again. This fall show is hosted by Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques. Owners Diane Gibble and Troy Tranquillo have watched this event grow from a small backyard casual event to a bustling, busy venue full of vendors and shoppers sporting witch hats and capes. But don’t let the hat fool you, it’s all in fun and a great way to bring both vendors and shoppers together for a busy two days of selling and picking. The show has grown in leaps and bounds each year, creating the need for bigger and better venues. If you thought last year’s event held at the Tulpehocken Manor couldn’t be better, think again. The Lebanon Valley Expo Center won’t disappoint, with plenty of climate-controlled space indoors, as well as covered, open air space outside. Since the show must go on, rain or shine, this venue will keep vendors and customers comfortable and provide plenty of parking. Although every talented vendor contributes to the spirited atmosphere of the show, hosts Gibble and Tranquillo are excited to introduce several new vendors this year. Among them are Sue Whitney, the founder and creative genius behind Junkmarket. Founded in 2000, Junkmarket has become the national leader in the “rustoration industry. Whitney is also the author of “Junk Beautiful and several other inspiring books and has been featured on the Hallmark Channel’s “Home and Family Show, “The

Allie Bucher, communications manager at Hospice & Community Care, shared, “Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. has been an amazing supporter of Hospice & Community Care over the years. It is because of their commitment that we have been able to bring awareness about the importance of hospice care to the communities we serve and provide care and comfort to all patients and families. They are a true asset to the community. Congratulations on celebrating 65 years!” Looking to the future, Jocelyn hopes to continue EPC’s community partnerships, and she believes that local investment is even more crucial today. “With the overwhelming amount of options and ease of convenience, the focus needs to remain on supporting the community of businesses and neighbors,” Jocelyn pointed out. “The strongest, most impactful opportunities to serve and support local communities need to be done in local communities.” “It is an honor and privilege to be part of EPC and contribute to its legacy,” Daryl added. “Our Christian heritage is at the core of all we do and is the foundation for our commitment to the local communities, businesses, churches, and organizations that we serve.” When describing EPC’s service to the community, Charlie quoted John Wesley, who stated, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you can.” “As I look back on the 65 years of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., I remember our parents instilling in us children a desire to do a good, quality job or service on time and at a fair price for our customers,” Charlie related. “However, it was much more than that. Loucks Publishes Novel Native Yorker Havery Loucks has recently published the novel “Reo Rio: ’60s Illusions,” which tells a coming-of-age story that reflects the myths and realities of the late 1960s. The book tells the story of a Holden Caulfield-like character who transfers to a small rural campus in Ohio, where he assimilates into a diversity of characters. His adventures are sometimes humorous and sometimes irreverent, but they are always tinged with the specters of Vietnam, political upheaval, and cultural changes. Although the setting is mostly in Ohio, there are various references to the York area. Another feature of the book is that every chapter begins and ends with
cultural images, Vietnam statistics, poignant quotes, and music icons of the time. The book is available in e-book and paperback forms at https://amzn.to/2jUBXGG. Loucks has degrees from the University of Rio Grande and McDaniel College. He taught English at Central York High School for 33 years and later worked eight years at Shipley Energy. In 2002, he was one of fifteen Pennsylvania teachers chosen to create a website based on the historical markers in the state. For Loucks, this included intensive research on musicians John Coltrane, Mary Lou Williams, Joe Venuti, and Eddie
Did You Know? The Havery Loucks Lange. His research also included the early history of the anthracite coal industry. These efforts contributed to the creation of http://ExplorePAHistory.com. The author has been married to Ruth Loucks for 41 years and has a daughter, Kate Ringhoffer, and a 1-year-old grandson.
Food Bank Receives Donation The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank recently announced that it is receiving a donation of $122,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in central Pennsylvania. The funds will be used to support the transformation of the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide 127,000 meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup
kitchens and meal programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. It is projected that this grant will enable the food bank to restructure its traditional backpack programs, which only serve the child, into school pantry and mobile distribution programs, which will feed the whole family. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities it serves. Through its Made-to-
Share program, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 588 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. Nonprofit retailer Re-Source York presented a contribution of $3,620 to Bell Socialization Services at the fourth annual Bell’s Big Bed Race on Aug. 4 at Penn Park. Bethany Slapinski, chair of the marketing committee, represented the Re-Source York board of directors by presenting the check to Bell representatives. York Revolution mascot DownTown attended the event to support the Revolution Rollers bed race team. Donations to and purchases from either of Re-Source York’s two locations - the home décor store on Carlisle Avenue by the York Fairgrounds and the home improvement store on East Ninth Avenue in North York - yield proceeds that are shared quarterly in support of Bell Family Shelter, a program of Bell. The shelter houses approximately 40 people every night, half of whom are children under the age of 12. The contributions from Re-Source York will help to provide shelter, nutritious
meals, and supportive guidance from shelter staff that connects families with resources to regain their independence. Keeping usable goods out of the landfill and helping neighbors in need embodies Re-Source York’s mission to inspire the community by being environmentally and socially responsible. The two nonprofit organizations have been partnered since 2002, with ReSource York also offering vocational training and job placement services for Bell service users, allowing them to gain experience working in retail. Bell Socialization Services provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and families experiencing homelessness. Since 1966, Bell programs have provided an environment of support and empowerment to help people throughout the greater York/Hanover area improve their quality of living.
Re-Source York presented a donation to Bell Socialization Services during Bell’s Big Bed Race. Taking part were (from left) Janel Fox, outreach coordinator; Lori Leister, assistant director of mental services; Bethany Slapinski, Re-Source York board of directors chair of the marketing committee; Bernie Hartlove, Bell Services user; Sheri Andrews, clubhouse generalist; and York Revolution mascot DownTown.
