Lions District Governor Visits Local Club

District governor Steve Shipman visted Dover Lions Club on Oct. 10. Shipman presented a talk titled “Getting Back to Basics: How to Function as a Club and Tips on Getting New Members.” Also attending the meeting were the Dover Lioness members and prospective members of the Lions Club. Shipman inducted four new members and reinstated a former member to the Lions Club. The district governor also received donations from both clubs for his special projects, which include diabetes awareness, LCIF Disaster Relief, childhood cancer research, and Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp.

History Center To Host Free Family Event York County History Center will host a free family event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, to commemorate the 242nd anniversary of the adoption of the Articles of Confederation. Families will be able to visit the Colonial Courthouse, 157 W. Market St., York, a replica of the first York County courthouse, where the second Continental Congress met from September 1777 through June 1778. Educational activities will be provided to help visitors understand the importance of the Articles of Confederation and the role they play in the history of the United States Attendees will be able to see an original printed copy of the Articles of Confederation dating to 1777 and explore various forms of currency used during the Colonial and Revolutionary See History Center pg 2

Flavors Of York Event Planned The Flavors of York event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Garden, 2000 Loucks Road, York. Twenty-one restaurants and vendors will offer food for tasting and beverages for sampling at the adult-only event. Selections will range from American to Italian to Viet Thai to Spanish to vegan food. The Flavors of York is sponsored by Temple Beth Israel to benefit the temple and its ongoing Doing Good for Goode partnership with Alexander D. Goode School in the York City School District. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors Inc. is the presenting sponsor. The Cultural Alliance administers the program in Adams, Fulton, Franklin, and York counties. The grants are administered by the Cultural Alliance of York County but are funded by the taxpayers of the commonwealth through the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. These grants expand the Cultural Alliance’s mission to support the creative community. The honors ceremony will include commentary by guest speakers who will pay tribute to Renaut. They include Karen Baum, who is a retired lead teacher from New Salem Elementary School where Renaut served as principal. She currently serves as a school board member for the SGASD. New Salem Elementary School principal Robert Shick will also speak. He was a teacher when he worked with Renaut, who was principal, at Shrewsbury Elementary School in the Southern York County School District. Kathy Eshbach, SGASD assistant elementary principal, worked with him during his roles as the district’s assistant superintendent and superintendent. The youngest speaker will be Emma Lewis, a first-grader at Spring Grove Elementary School and his granddaughter. A reception will follow the program. A key component of the Glatfelter Honors event is to raise funds to continue providing services and programs to the community. The Glatfelter Memorial Library Honors Committee will honor Dr. David Renaut as its first honoree during its inaugural honors program and reception at Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. at the library, 101 Glenview Road, Spring Grove. Renaut will be honored for his many years of dedicated service to the library and Spring Grove community. The public is invited. Renaut retired from his position as superintendent from the Spring Grove Area School District (SGASD) in July after 39 years as a public school educator. He served 18 of those years at SGASD, where he initially started as principal of New Salem Elementary School in 2001. Prior to coming to Spring Grove, Renaut worked for the Carroll County Public School District and the Southern York County School District. During the span of his career, he taught fifth- and sixth-grade social studies and served as an assistant middle school principal, assistant elementary school principal, elementary principal, and assistant superintendent. Weis Participates In 5K Event

Boys’ Dance Class Posted Greater York Dance is in its second season of the ALLBoys class, taught by Tim Pizziketti, an alumnus of Midstate Ballet of Greater York Dance. Classes take place on Thursdays from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. at Greater York Dance Studios, 3524 E. Market St., York. This is a boys’ dance class, and no girls will take part. The class has a fitness through movement focus. Boys will learn jazz and hip-hop in an environment that is meant to be both fun and challenging. Project Linus Meeting Scheduled Project Linus of York will meet on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fourth United Methodist Church, 20 N. Lehman St. Attendees should bring their own lunch, and beverages and dessert will be provided. This volunteer, nonprofit organization works to provide a sense of security, warmth, and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans created by volunteer “Blanketeers.” Project Linus’ mission also includes striving to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity that benefits
children for individuals and groups in local communities. Volunteers do not need to know how to sew; all are welcome to help as long as they can cut or tie a knot. Those who knit or crochet should bring yarn, needles, and patterns. Community members may also help by donating items, child-friendly fabric, fleece fabric, flannel, white or cream thread or yarn as long as it is not wool. To promote recycling and celebrate America Recycles Day on Friday, Nov. 15, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is sponsoring puppet show assembly programs in nine York County schools. The recycling-themed program, titled “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles,” was created by puppeteer Kathleen Jacobs. Students will see ordinary household items “recycled” into characters who promote care of the environment through reduction of waste, as well as reuse and recycling of materials. Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association (SMBA) will hold the second show of its 2019-20 season on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Concerts are held in the social hall at the Goodwill Fire Company, 2318 S.
