Diversity Program Set
Watershed Steward Training Slated
The IDEAS Center, a department of the York Jewish Community Center (JCC), invites the community to come and learn about religious diversity on Saturday, Dec. 7. The program, “Shared Faith: The Golden Rule,” will take place as one of the many events through Light Up York from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the York College Center for Community Engagement. This program will celebrate the cultural diversity of York through roundrobin, interactive breakout sessions with area faith leaders. Participants will have the opportunity to explore various

The program was launched in 2016 in York County, and York County currently has 70 Master Watershed Stewards. After completing the 40-hour course, trainees must volunteer 50 hours for Penn State Extension during their first year.

Handbell Ensemble Will Perform advanced literature written for handbells, handchimes and assorted other instruments. The group performs using seven octaves of handbells. York College’s theater program will present “Alice in Wonderland” on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Waldner Performing Arts Center at the college, 441 Country Club Road, York. The 45-minute family-friendly production of the famous story was adapted by York College theater professor Suzanne Delle and is geared for young children. While York College has offered the show for the past two years, this year’s version will have new scenes, a new setting, new dances, and new actors. Young Alice, played by freshman theater minor Grace Nicosia from Burlington, N.J., will journey to Wonderland as it is spun by Charles Dodgson, played by freshman theater major Ben Cloud from Middletown, Del. Cookie Walk To Benefit Christmas Dinner September House and the Local Feed the Vets of York County are co-sponsoring a Cookie Walk, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. This is the second year for this event at the September House, 1251 W. King St., York. Tables will be covered with various kinds of homemade cookies and candies, baked by veterans and friends. The Thimble and Thread Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York. Essay Contest Announced Elks Lodge 213 is participating in the B.P.O.E. Grand Lodge Americanism Essay Contest. The contest offers students in grades five through eight the opportunity to express views on their pride in America. “What Does Freedom of Speech Mean to Me?” will be the essay theme. Essays must be typed or legibly printed in ink, and the length is not to exceed 300 words. Judging criteria will be originality, development of theme, and neatness with use of proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. In judging the essays, fifth and sixth grades will be combined and seventh and eighth grades will be combined, with the top three essays from each group selected. A certificate of participation will be given to all entrants. Monetary prizes will be awarded
to the three winners of each group. The deadline for entries is Sunday, Dec. 15. Essays must be submitted to Elks Lodge 213, 223 N. George St., York. All entries must include a personal information page containing the contestant’s name, address, phone number, school, teacher’s name, and present grade. All entries will become the property of the Elks. Elks Lodge 213 will send the selected essays on to district competition, which progresses through the state and national levels. Plaques for first-, second-, and third-place winning essays in both groups at the national level will be awarded on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. The fourth annual York Walk-A-Christmas Mile event will be held on Monday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m. The journey into Christmas will feature Scripture, song, and prayer focused on the theme “Follow the Star.” Four east end churches in York will serve as stations along the worship excursion. For the third year in a row, Cub Scout Pack 94 of Shiloh is setting up a Warming Tree at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York. In lieu of traditional ornaments, the boys decorate the tree with donated new and like-new hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks. They hang winter jackets on a nearby coat rack. Weis Markets Donates Potatoes For “York Giving” Weis Markets recently helped to sponsor this year’s “York Giving” Thanksgiving celebration with LifePath Christian Ministries and Catholic Harvest Food Pantry. Weis Markets donated 7,000 pounds of potatoes for the recipients of the Thanksgiving meal, which equals 3-anda-half pallets of 200 bags of potatoes each weighing 10 pounds. The potatoes were divided into lots of
1,400 pounds and sent out to five preschools for the children to count, sort and put into bags for each meal. The “Potato Patrol” at each preschool became a way for the children to help and give back. On Nov. 19, the children from Eastminster Preschool packed 10 to 12 potatoes per bag, equaling four pounds for each family. The children worked on counting skills, practiced sharing and
talked about all the uses of potatoes. This is the second year they have participated. The other preschools that participated in the project were St. Joseph Catholic, Holy Trinity Catholic, St. Rose of Lima and Joyful Noise. This year, more than 2,400 families received meals on Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving. In addition to the donation of 7,000 pounds of potatoes, Weis collected 2,020 food items in a food drive.

Carbon-Neutral Fuel Service Launches Shipley Energy recently announced a new division, Harmony Fuels, that will provide a carbon-neutral option for heating homes with heating oil and propane to residential customers from Maryland to Maine. For each gallon of heating oil or propane a customer purchases, Harmony Fuels will purchase the equivalent number of pounds of carbon offsets from certified green energy projects. Despite the purchase of carbon offsets, Harmony Fuels expects pricing to be equivalent to or lower than the average consumer cost of heating oil and propane. “Consumers are increasingly aware of the impact they have on the environment, and they want to be responsible,” said Steven Downey, president of Harmony Fuels. “With the launch of Harmony Fuels, we are excited to offer our customers a carbon-neutral option as a step toward reducing our collective carbon footprint.” Harmony Fuels was created to provide customers with the energy
needed to heat their homes in a way that is less harmful to the environment. Harmony Fuels will deliver standard low or ultra-low sulfur heating oil and propane to customers to use, and Harmony Fuels will purchase the equivalent number of carbon offsets, helping to fund projects designed to lead to cleaner air and lower overall carbon emissions. Customers will select the specific type of project that their specific carbon offsets will come from (solar, wind, landfill methane recapture, livestock methane capture, fugitive emissions capture, and others). Harmony Fuels will also provide the project names, location, and description for consumers to see. The purchases will be powered by Cloverly, a platform for the purchase of certified carbon offsets.
