“As a former member of the armed forces of the United States, I think it is appropriate that the Dover Area School District establish a veterans’ memorial to recognize and honor all veterans, including Dover alumni and staff, for the sacrifice of all who served,” stated Jacobs. Last January, Jacobs pitched the idea to create a veterans’ memorial to school district administrators and the board of school directors. “Back in 2018, they were opening up bids to build a new high school. That’s when I said to the administration and superintendent that this would be a good time to a build a veterans’ memorial,” Jacobs explained. When the plan was approved, a committee was established, with

4500 Intermediate Ave., Dover. “When you come in the driveway, it will be very visible,” Jacobs noted. The memorial will feature a granite pylon for each of the branch- Brad Jacobs, a 1962 alumnus of Dover es of the Unit- High School and a commissioned officer ed States in the Pennsylvania Army National Armed Forces. The back of the tain an inspirational quote, and the dark pylon in the front will contain the contractors’ names along with other major contributors to the memorial. The black granite will come from a company in Chester County, as well as Baughman Memorial Works of Dover. Company president Donald Baughman is a Dover graduate. The white granite will be shipped from Vermont. Jacobs as the chair, to make the memorial a reality. The committee is composed of other high school alumni, current staff members and district administrators. In coordination with the Dover Eagle Foundation, a nonprofit organization, the committee began a fundraising campaign to offset the costs of construction, estimated to be about $90,000. The memorial design was created by Murphy & Dittenhafer of York. “Frank Dittenhafer did all the work (on the design) pro bono. He is a Dover graduate, and his father was a World War II serviceman,” Jacobs noted. The memorial will be constructed on a grass plot near the front door of the high school, which is located behind the current Dover Area Immediate School,

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) will hold a free Christmas tree recycling program for all York County residents. Beginning Saturday, Dec. 26, residents may bring their tree to the parking lot located directly across the street from the York County Resource Recovery Center on Blackbridge Road in York. Residents should follow the signs along Blackbridge Road directing them to the proper location. Residents should remove any ornaments, lights, tinsel, and protective bags prior to dropping off their tree. H & H General Excavating will recycle the trees into mulch for use in the warmer months. This program allows residents to easily dispose of their Christmas tree while reducing waste. The YCSWA Christmas tree
