Bearing fruit Local author releases book on patience BY ANN MEAD ASH

In her quest to bring lessons from the Fruits of the Spirit, found in Galatians 5:22-23, to both children and adults, local author Shelleen Weaver has produced four books. The most recent is “Grizz Bear and Skippy Cricket,” the tale of a ferocious and impatient bear whose winter hibernation is interrupted by an annoying cricket. A s w i t h a l l Author Shelleen Weaver displays the four “Fruit Weaver ’s “Fruit Fables” books she has written. Wearing hardhats and safety goggles, a group of students is hard at work on the grounds of Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) in Mount Joy. They’re building a home as part of the school’s House Project, and they’re also honing the skills they need for their future careers. Since 1989, students have constructed homes through the program. Initially, the construction sites were located throughout Lancaster County,

but getting students to the sites was a challenge. In 2005, the school streamlined the process by subdividing sections of the Mount Joy campus into lots for future house projects. Building the homes takes p l ace o ve r t wo ye a r s a n d involves students in multiple areas of study, said Rick Martin, construction manager. Tips for maintaining a commitment to exercise At one point or another, millions of adults across the globe have resolved to be more physically active. The benefits of routine exercise are too numerous to cite, but some of the more notable ones include a lower risk for chronic disease and illness, improved self-esteem and greater overall health. With so much to gain from routine exercise, it’s no wonder so many people aspire to be more physically active. But it’s easy to lose motivation when pursuing this goal. Luckily, there are some ways to make it a little easier to maintain that

commitment over the long haul. - Break it up. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health notes that people don’t need to exercise all at once to reap the rewards of physical activity. If time is tight, break up a workout over the course of the day. Some strength-training exercises in the morning can be followed up with a brisk walk or run over a lunch break. This approach makes it easier to fit a full workout into one’s daily routine. - E m p l oy t h e b u d d y system. The Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention suggests that working out with a partner increases exercise motivation and encourages individuals to be more consistent with their exercise routine so they do not let their partners down. The authors behind a 2019 study published in the International Journal of Research in Exercise Physiolog y sug gested the efficacy of the buddy system may require further study before researchers can definitively say it’s an effective motivation strategy for people who want to exercise more. But there’s no denying that many

The many benefits of reading Reading is a popular pastime, and self-proclaimed book nerds and those who look forward to the next book club gathering can rejoice knowing that a good story isn’t the only benefit associated with this activity. In fact, there are numerous health benefits to cracking a book. For one thing, reading slows cognitive decline. Natural aging results in a decline in memory and brain function over time, but according to research published in the journal Neurology, reading may help slow that process and keep minds sharp. Reading also improves concentration and focus. Technology draws a lot of attention, and those fast processing times and almost instant gratification can shorten attention spans.

Reading requires undivided attention and focus, which can improve one’s ability to concentrate. Those who are looking for a sense of accomplishment may read anything from a newspaper article to a novel. Finishing this task, helps people check off measurable goals, and the mental boost they receive may enhance their mood. Additionally, as long as a person borrows books from a library or a friend, reading is free. It’s possible to educate oneself, travel to far-off lands or even solve mysteries without making a major financial investment. Reading also has the power to enhance literacy and intelligence, as frequent reading introduces the reader to new

vocabulary and information. Also, a study of 1,890 identical twins in the United Kingdom found that the twins who had early reading skills seemingly had more positive results for higher intelligence later in life. Relaxation is also a common benefit of reading. A 2009 study by Sussex University researchers showed that reading may reduce stress by as much as 68%. Furthermore, if people read paper books rather than e-books before bedtime, this activity takes a person away from screens. Screens can contribute to losing 20 minutes of sleep on average, according to research published in Pediatrics. There are many reasons to curl up with a good book, as reading is beneficial to both mind and body.

individuals feel that they are more likely to exercise with a friend than they are if they go solo. - Schedule exercise time. Busy professionals book work meetings, family obligations and other daily tasks in their schedules, and the T.H. Chan School of Public Health recommends doing the same with exercise. Allotting time to exercise each day may decrease the likelihood that you will skip a workout, and once results start to manifest, you may be more motivated to stay the course. - Identify what progress may look like. It’s easy to

become discouraged if a commitment to routine exercise does not produce visible results. However, just because your abs are not becoming chiseled a month into a workout routine or the scale is not reflecting significant weight loss, it does not mean your routine is not working. As the human body ages, transforming it becomes more difficult. For that reason, a workout routine that left you looking lean and chiseled in your 20s may not produce the same body in your 40s. Luckily, that does not mean the exercise is not working

and ultimately helping you get healthier. Adults are urged to speak with their physicians and identify what progress with a workout routine might look like for someone their age. Progress may look different than it did years ago, but if the end result is a healthier you, then that may be the key motivation you need to keep going. It’s no secret that making a commitment to routine exercise can be difficult, but various strategies can increase the likelihood that individuals will stay the course as they seek to exercise more frequently.

Ideas for healthy eating Diet and exercise are the key components of maintaining a healthy weight and protecting against chronic disease. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, eating smart and being active have similar effects, including reducing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers, and diabetes. In addition, these healthy living strategies can improve personal appearance and can improve overall well-being, helping people live longer and maintain their independence. People may wonder how to eat better when faced with many diets, each of which promises great results. Navigating the options can be confusing, and there is no mag ic formula to eating better. Common sense can come into play when attempting to eat better, and individuals also can consider the following strategies to make a diet work for them as they seek to live healthier. - Eat colorful, varied, nutritionally dense foods. Medical News Today says each meal should be 50% fruit and vegetables, 25% whole grains, and 25% protein. Select an array of colorful foods that will provide most of the nutrients needed.

- Choose fiber-rich foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are good sources of fiber. Fiber helps people maintain digestive health and can help a person to feel fuller longer, reducing the potential for overeating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - Note how you feel after eating. Create a food journal where you jot down notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you notice that certain foods or ingredients trigger adverse reactions, it may be worth avoiding that type of food or looking for an alternative. Stomach upset or bloating after eating dairy, for example, may indicate an intolerance for lactose. - Explore the Mediterranean diet. While it’s wise to avoid fad diets that often produce short-term but unsustainable results, the Mediterranean diet has stood the test of time. According to the authors of a study published in JAMA Network Open in October 2023, middle-aged and older adults who were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome lost visceral fat (belly fat) a nd s h o we d a g re ate r reduction in the percentage of total fat while adhering to a Mediterranean diet.

They also had delayed loss of lean body mass, which often comes with aging. Mediterranean diets prioritize legumes, seafood, vegetables, and healthful fats like olive oil. - Control portion sizes. Sometimes it’s not what a person eats but how much he or she eats that affects health. Weighing and measuring food can help a p ers on control portions and understand how many calories he or she is consuming each day. The National Institutes of Health says eating plans that favor 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 for men are good targets to lose weight at a healthy pace when combined with moderate exercise. - Focus on adding healthy foods to your diet rather than on trying to avoid detrimental foods. The greater quantity of healthy foods are eaten, the more unhealthy ones will fall by the wayside. Focusing on the positive can help people feel less restricted by healthy eating plans. Balanced eating is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. While there are many fad diets, eating plans with a proven track record that are supported by the medical community may be the best bet.

demands for a bedtime story each night. “It started with my daughters, but my son (Adrian) was tenacious,” Weaver recalled. “He really developed (storytelling) in me.” Weaver said she often asked her son for a prompt to start the story, such as a type of animal or the name of the animal. One night, Adrian asked for a story about a dog named “Clammord.” “But Clammord was not a dog,” said Weaver. “He was a loud, clamorous duck.” Clammord will be the main character of Weaver’s next book, “Clammord Is Kind.” “Clammord is obliviously annoying , and he gets shamed and ostracized because he’s not gifted in the way (the others in his community) are, but he returns that cruelty with kindness,” said Weaver. Weaver’s first book in the series, “Love Bird,” about a bird that rudely repeats everything that is said to him, came out in 2020. In late 2021, Weaver released

CONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION

“Glub Glum’s Ship Flip,” about a fish she called “a bottom feeder ” with “victim mentality pessimism.” “Sir Beaver Finds the Missing Peace” tackles workaholism with poetry that evokes pictures, with lines such as: “Once upon a winding creek, where brook trout swim and bullfrogs leap. Sir Beaver lived, but couldn’t sleep nor leave his work for fun.” Weaver is also a musician and singer, and she likens her books to her musical creativity. “I write the stories like I write music,” she said. “You can use one word and carry it through a whole line or use 15 words and have it hit all the right spots,” she stated, adding that without a tune, a little extra work is required. “I have to tighten it up so the inflections happen where they should so anybody can read it and not get it wrong,” she said. “Sometimes finding the right word can be really tricky. The emphasis of the word matters.” More information about “Fruit Fables” is available under “Books” at www .shelleenweaver.com.

h e s h a re d . “ T h e y c a n understand the concept of zero. They can recognize human faces.” Bees often get a bad rap, Gorman noted, because they sting , and he has endured his share of pain from the hobby. “After a while, it hardly bothers you at all,” he said simply. It’s worth the discomfort to know he’s doing his part to help the environment, he said. “As a group, we’re doing our best to save the bees,” he explained. Due to a variety of factors, including loss of habitat, the honey bee population is declining. Attending the workshop provides people with a one-year membership in the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. Established in 1876 as the Lancaster Honey Producers Association, the society exists to promote better understanding of honey bee biology and behavior; provide public awareness, education and service; and promote honey and other products of the

hive. Meetings include educational topics about beekeeping as well as hive checks at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center located at 1446 Auction Road in Manheim. “Members can come once a month to the center, and they can learn all about the bees without having to handle the bees,” Gorman said. “Experts will show the hives and talk about beekeeping.” The workshop is a good first step into beekeeping, and it provides the perfect opportunity to get an idea of what beekeeping is all about, he noted. “If you are at all curious ab out hone y b e es and saving the bees, come to this workshop,” Gorman said. “ You’ll get a good, basic understanding of how important bees are to our environment and our food chain.” Space is limited for the workshop, and registration is required. Lancaster County’s living history BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Lancaster County holds the roots of a rich history that predates the founding of the United States. As one of the original 13 colonies, Pennsylvania is among the first locations in America that European settlers decided to make their home several hundred

years ago. Although this may seem like ancient history to modern-day Lancastrians, the area’s wealth of historical buildings and artifacts reminds us that many stories in our history books took place right in our backyards. One of Lancaster County’s oldest structures is the Hans Herr House, which See History pg 8

Instructors Mitchell Hinton and James Smith supervise the students. Once the home is complete, it’s sold on the open market. The most recent home completed by LCCTC students was a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house that sold in July of 2022 for $415,900. The proceeds from the sale are used to fund future house projects at the school. Martin noted that the program offers students an opportunity to learn a trade while also engaging kids who might not thrive in a typical academic classroom. “These kids are hands-on. They’re not book learners,” he stated. “They get frustrated sitting at a desk. They want to be out working

with their hands, and they will potentially have a great career after this.” The 40-some students working on two houses currently will go on to schools like T haddeus Stevens College of Technology after graduation or will enter the workforce directly. Martin said that he’s impressed not just with the students’ skills, but with their work ethic as well. “I’ve been a boss and a business owner, and what I always wanted was kids who were willing to work, who wanted to work and wanted to learn,” he stated, “and these are those kids.” Senior Vivienne Nolt of Elizabethtown has enjoyed everything she’s learned from the House Project,

is now a part of the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The home was built by Mennonite settlers in 1719, and it served as the centerpiece for the entire Mennonite congregation in Willow Street. The building remains the oldest Mennonite meeting place in the country, as well as the oldest house in Lancaster County. In addition to preserving the Hans Herr House, one of the 1719 Museum’s goals is to make the area’s history easily accessible to the community. The museum accomplishes this goal by offering educational programs such as guided tours of the property. Ever y year, the 1719 Museum invites members of the public to attend a training course to become qualified tour guides. The course includes four sessions, which are held at both the Hans Herr House and Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.

A tour guide leads a group of children through the Hans Herr House, which was built in 1719 and remains the oldest home in Lancaster County.

This year, the sessions will take place on Saturdays, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 24 and March 2. Each session will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., with the exception of Feb. 3, which will run longer. More details will be available closer to

Giant announces Feeding School Kids initiative

T h e G i a n t C o m p a ny recently announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative. Customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, buy a reusable bag or convert their Choice points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs. The initiative, now in its fourth year, will run for three months through Sunday, March 31, to help meet the needs of many students. T his year, Giant will donate $100,000 to launch the pro gram. T hroug h Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. For example, in Pennsylvania, Norristown School District distributed 10,000 meal boxes in the summer containing five breakfasts and five lunches in each box and York Suburban School District restocked its pantry to double its service to 175 families. For more information on the Giant Company’s Feeding School Kids initiative, visit https:// go.giantfoodstores.com/ eliminating-hunger/p/1.
