Patriotic Stitchers Plan Fundraising Auction By Ann Mead Ash

The mission of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans is to provide handmade quilts and afghans to several area hospice centers where they are distributed to veterans. Currently, creations are delivered to the Coatesville and Lebanon VA hospitals, AseraCare Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Services, and Hospice & Community Care. The Stitchers is a committee of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA). Members of the Stitchers volunteer their time, and necessary supplies have

generally been donated by the volunteers for the more than 125 blankets that have been given to veterans so far. Now, the group has decided to raise funds for supplies with a live auction on Saturday, Feb. 22. The auction, which will feature baskets, quilts, and more, will be held in the Veterans Hall of the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The kitchen will open at 11:30 a.m., and the live auction will begin at 1 p.m. The event will feature prizes and giveaways as well. An auction preview will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the same location. Carl Pickel will serve as auctioneer.

LUNCHEON FOR LADIES

Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will host a luncheon at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. Michele Williams will speak on “Believe You Can! And Live as You Were Designed to Be. The meeting will also feature Gennel Zimmerman with essential oils. The cost for the luncheon is all-inclusive. All women are welcome to attend. For reservations, call Pat at 717-951-0773.

Amber Pavalko (left) and her occupational therapist, Erica Lausch, try out the special bike that was donated to Pavalko by Lititz AMBUCS. The

Amber Pavalko of Bowmansville wanted to go for bicycle rides with her 6-year-old daughter, Addie. What should be a simple desire is complicated by the fact that Amber has Chiari malformation, a neurological condition in which the brain extends into the spinal column. Chiari is associated with a variety of other physical problems including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), an inheritable connective tissue disorder, and syringomyelia, which occurs when a syrinx, a cyst caused by a buildup of fluid, forms in the spinal cord. Amber has been dealing with the issues related to Chiari since the birth of her daughter in July 2013. In the time since, she has been undergoing both physical and occupational therapy, but her health issues have made it difficult for her to make progress in either area. In the last year, Amber has improved to the point that when her See Bicycle pg 4

Long’s Park Art Festival Honored With Award By Ann Mead Ash

When Rachael Lantz, marketing manager for the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, and Rick Faulkner, artistic director for the Long’s Park Art Festival, consider the awards the yearly festival has received from ArtFairCalendar.com, they are astonished at how well the show has fared against the competition. “What is exciting is seeing our show up against shows from D.C. and Chicago, because we are (in a) much smaller area in comparison, said Lantz. “It’s pretty amazing.

Visitors enjoy the Long’s Park Art Festival, which has been a tradition in the park since 1979. The fair was named No. 4 in the country for 2019 by ArtFairCalendar.com. “We are up against some long-established (festivals) in metropolitan areas, agreed Rick. The festival raises funds for the See Art Festival pg 2

Organizers have endeavored to gather a variety items that will appeal to a wide audience. Among the many items that will be auctioned off will be up to 50 gift baskets, with themes including toy, beach, spa, country, gardening, dog, cat, and Italian night. A number of quilts, including twinsize quilts, wall hangings, and lap quilts in a variety of themes, will go over the block. Organizers noted that they have a flower quilt, a dog quilt, and a garden quilt. One unusual quilt was created with a Three Stooges theme. Paintings by a local artist and small pieces of handmade furniture will also be auctioned off. Prizes and giveaways will include a refurbished computer and homemade items such as sweaters. Tickets, which are necessary to attend

the event, may be purchased by calling 717-553-3161 or 717-888-3772. Food items, which will be included in the ticket price, will be pulled pork sandwiches; chips; beverages, such as water, soda, and coffee; and desserts. The Stitchers started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. Kathy Baker and Jean Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Some donated quilts come from stitchers as far away as New York and Virginia.

The roots of the Long’s Park fair begin with Rick’s father, Richard Falkner Sr. “(My father) was on the county-wide bicentennial committee in 1976,” recalled Rick, who mentioned that a July Fourth festival in Long’s Park during the U.S. bicentennial year attracted both local and national attention. “WGAL broadcast (about the show), and it was part of the NBC national broadcast of (events) around the nation,” shared Rick. AMBUCS was able to provide Amber with a bike that could work for her at no cost. The bike has three wheels, hand brakes, and number of special mirrors so Amber can see behind her. She hopes to be able to ride it with Addie by spring. Currently, Amber is looking for a system to turn the bike into a trainer for stationary use indoors and doing modified exercises to help her build the muscles she will need to be able to ride. Amber’s Chiari issues have required her to undergo 15 brain and spinal cord surgeries, some of which were necessary to save her life. The high pressure in her brain caused by excess spinal fluid had to be relieved. “(In 2017), my neurosurgeon stabilized my spine … which decreases a lot of mobility, but it saved my life,” said Amber, who added that she is grateful for the titanium hardware that holds her head in a forward position. “Without this, when I turned my neck, it dislocated certain joints, causing me to not be able to breathe.” Following her second shunt surgery, done by a specialist in Maryland, Amber began to feel well enough to engage in more daily living activities, although she still cannot drive and she tires easily.

occupational therapist, Erica Lausch, asked if there was anything she wanted to work toward, she said she wanted to ride a bike with Addie. Finding a bicycle that would work for her, however, was no easy task. “I have balance issues, and I can’t turn my head, so a regular bike would not be an option,” explained Amber, who looked at recumbent bicycles and found their price tag to be a problem as well. “When you’re sick, you spend so much money traveling to appointments and all the things you need,” she explained. Erica was not ready to give up. She contacted her friend Victoria Warfel of Lititz AMBUCS, a civic group that works to create independence and mobility for people with disabilities, and asked if the organization, known for providing adaptive bicycles for children, could help an adult. “They have all types of bikes, but you need a therapist to figure out what type of bike will work for an individual,” reported Erica. “I figured out what I thought would work best for (Amber),” she said.

Amber is looking forward to being able to get out on the bike. “It’s giving me another way to exercise,” she said. “With all the hardware, I lost everything but walking.” Before the onset of the Chiari symptoms, Amber liked to do aerobics and interval training. “That would all be too high impact for me now,” she said. “With high pressure, you can’t jump up and down.” Amber is also thankful to Erica, AMBUCS, and others who have gone the extra mile for her. “I am not an inside-thebox patient,” said Amber, “(but) people who have invested in me and walked with me are why I can still be a mom.” Amber’s mother, Pam Jaskierski, added that she is especially grateful for those who have been willing to step into Amber’s life. “(The specialist) who helped her was a godsend because he listened, and he fixed it,” said Pam. “Otherwise we would not be here.” Lititz AMBUCS is a local member of a national charitable service organization. The organization holds annual fundraisers in Lititz Springs Park. Readers who want to know more about the organization may visit https://lititzambucs.com or email Ambucs@ptd.net.

Veritas Academy invites adults who love literature and enjoy discussing history, culture, and theology to join in an Adult Discussion Seminar Series titled “Great Books for the Grown Ups.” The series will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays from Jan. 27 through April 20 at Veritas Academy, 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola. The course will examine three influential works of literature - ranging from ancient to modern times - in light of the culture and climate of their time and today. The seminar discussion will encompass theology, history, politics, morality, and more. “Great Books for the Grown Ups” is modeled after Veritas Academy’s Omnibus course program, a cornerstone class that all secondary students take each year. Omnibus is a discussion-based class that examines literature, civics, history, theology, and culture of a given time period all in one course. The format allows students to gain a broader scope and appreciation of not only the great books of that time, but also the entire cultural climate, how it all related to the church, and how it has shaped the world today. The adult Omnibus class affords

• Extracurricular activities activities. • Financial assistance available. • Special classes in Spanish, Art, Music, Library, Computer, and Physical Education. • Bus transportation to 8 school districts.

Insects To Highlight Annual Extension Meeting If asked whether they would be happy in a world without insects, some people might answer in the affirmative. However, such a scenario would be disastrous for Earth and its inhabitants, entomologists have said. “Insects are integral to the health of the planet and people,” explained Michael Skvarla, director of the Insect Identification Laboratory at Penn State University (PSU). “They pollinate our crops and feed on pests, help decompose dead animals, form the base of food webs, and stabilize natural environments.” PSU Department of Entomology graduate students Brooke Lawrence and Ginamaria Roman Echevarria will offer a perspective on the worldwide decline of insects in their keynote presentation, “A World of Insects: The Good, the Bad, and the Changes,” at the Penn State Extension Lancaster County annual meeting and social event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. In keeping with the family-friendly style of the evening, the presentation will be appropriate for people of all ages and will have an interactive component. Attendees will have an opportunity to view

exhibits featuring stream macroinvertebrates and native plants for insects. The event will begin with a social hour, during which guests may enjoy foods and beverages provided by local commodity groups and vendors. The program will follow. In addition to learning about the importance of insects’ roles in agriculture and the environment, attendees will be introduced to Brent Hales, the new director of Penn State Extension, who will share about Lancaster County Extension programs, including 4-H youth development and Master Gardeners. Guests will also hear the latest news regarding spotted lanternfly research and receive an overview of “Hemp: Lancaster County’s Heritage Crop.” In addition to his role as Extension director, Hales serves as an associate dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree in sociology from Middle Tennessee State University, and a doctorate in rural sociology from Iowa State University. Hales previously served as the senior associate dean and CFO of the University of Min-

nesota Extension, an associate dean for the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality, and the director of the University of Minnesota Crookston, Economic Development Authority University Center. Hales’ primary area of research is holistic community and economic development and entrepreneurship. He is the founder of the Southern Entrepreneurship Program, which teaches entrepreneurship skills to high school and community college students and to displaced workers throughout the United States and around the globe. He is also a past president of the Community Development Society. Penn State Extension is an educational network that gives people in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties access to Penn State’s resources and expertise. It is funded through state and county governments, as well as the United States Department of Agriculture. Through this county-based partnership, Penn State Extension educators, faculty members, and local volunteers work together to share research-based information with local residents. There is no cost to attend the annual meeting, but registration is required. Read-

ers must register by Monday, Jan. 27, by visiting http://extension.psu.edu/lancaster -county-extension-annual-meeting or calling 877-345-0691. Penn State encourages disabled people to participate in its programs and activities. “We have a responsibility to make disciples in every space (including online),” said Addison Roberts, youth and online pastor for Grace Community Church of Willow Street (GCCWS), referencing the Great Commission. “I’m excited about people finding Jesus who might otherwise never step into a church.” Roberts has coupled a passion to reach people with the Gospel with an interest in internet technology and mixing music. About seven years ago Roberts got into Twitch and livestreaming Madden. Although he discontinued actively broadcasting his video games, the experience had given him an understanding of how livestreams worked. Five years ago, Roberts joined the staff at GCCWS. In 2018, lead pastor Mike Sigman asked Roberts to spearhead the production of livestreamed worship services and enhance the church’s online outreach. The result has been the creation of an online campus, which is really the beginning of what Roberts hopes will develop into an enriching, immersive experience that individuals and families can access from wherever they might be. “We’re making a commitment that this can be people’s church experience,” Roberts said. “(We’re asking ourselves), ‘Are we offering everything online that we

do in person?’” The online church has been patterned off the examples provided by Life.Church in Oklahoma and First Capital Christian Church (FCCC) in Indiana. The platform has been beta tested by church members, and it is slated to go live at www.gccws.net/live on Sunday, Jan. 26, for the 9:15 a.m. worship service. Viewers may log on at 9:05 a.m. to catch the preservice information and music. During the service, Roberts will be online in a chat room, where participants may exchange messages with him and others. Possible topics will be prayer requests, questions about the morning’s message, or items of concern or praise in individuals’ lives. “Feedback has been very positive,” Roberts shared. “People are really excited that when they can’t make it to (the physical campus, they can) tune in that way.” In March or April, Roberts hopes to offer GCCWS membership class via a video conference. Eventually, Bible studies, small groups, children’s programs, and other activities may be added. The online church campus will evolve and be “fairly dynamic,” he said. “Online communities already exist in many different capacities,” Roberts said, reading from the FAQ at https:// gccws.net/online-church. Bucks Earn Decisive Win Over Ephrata by Leah Sintic

Though a league victory was elusive in the Buckskins’ early season, that streak was broken after a teamwide CV effort culminated in a decisive 71-57 victory over Ephrata last Tuesday, January 7. The team’s 71 points is their second-highest accumulation this season, and the scoring surge was led by Will Stone’s career high 23 points. “Will provided perhaps his best allaround game of the season,” acknowledged head coach Brad Herr. Three additional CV athletes joined Stone in notching double figures: Austin Wertz with 15, Bradley Stoltzfus 14, and Luke Rumbaugh 11. “We knew coming in that nothing short of our best effort would suffice, and we were able to capitalize off the

unselfish nature of our kids’ style,” elaborated Herr. That unselfishness manner of play showed up in a big way, with 18 assisted baskets for the team. Hungry for a win, the Bucks shot ahead 21-14 in the opening quarter and then preceded to hold the Mountaineers to just six points in the subsequent period, expanding their lead to 39-20 at the half. Though Ephrata rallied for a stronger latter half, the Bucks’ early advantage allowed them to maintain a firm grasp on the victory. “Bradley Stoltzfus and Austin Wertz were able to establish their games driving to the rim, while Luke Rumbaugh was able to extend the defense with some sharp outside shooting,” Herr explained, also pointing to the defensive effort of the rest

of the team which led to the triumph. The previous Friday, the Bucks came close to another win, but came up just short, 69-53 against the Warwick Warriors. This time Stoltzfus paced the offense with 17 points and Wertz added 13. WRESTLING Last Wednesday, January 15, the CV grapplers pulled out a close victory in a 36-32 league showdown against the Penn Manor Comets. The Comets grabbed an early lead going up 17-0 after four bouts, but four CV pins provided by Jonathan Lopez (170), Josue Marente (195), Jesse Lonon (285), and Keaton Fischer (126) brought the Buckskins roaring back into control. A pair of key forfeits also went in favor of the Bucks, giving Leo Marente (220) and Trent Ruble (106) crucial points in

the close contest. The triumph marked CV’s fourth league win so far this season, and improved their overall record to 6-3. On Saturday the 11th, the Buckskins took part in the Husky Duals held at Mifflin County High School, a full day of competition that began with a CV victory over Athens Area High School 46-27, and culminated in a 48-30 loss to Philipsburg Osceola in a battle for third. “The Husky Duals saw us come out aggressively in our first match against Athens, and take advantage of some bonus points in the dual meet,” noted head coach Trent Turner. Though the final two matches slipped from their grasp, Turner expects his young team to gain some valuable lessons from the experience. “I believe the team understands that we need to be doing a better job of asserting ourselves in matches, no matter the opponent we face,” explained Turner. BOWLING Though last Tuesday’s match against Hempfield went 5-2 in favor of the Black Knights, the CV bowlers,

led by Robbie Jack, picked up two points in a game one win, displaying great teamwork and improvement. “The entire team had a great night,” emphasized head coach Doug Davidson.

Jack who has been the team’s high roller all season put together a 683 series (233-235-215), just one pin shy of his season high. “Robbie has definitely been the team leader with his scores each

match,” Davidson noted of the junior, while pointing out the growth in the rest of the team. “Andrew Smith’s bowling has been very consistent each match,” he added. Haley Jack put up a 552 to boost the Bucks cause, and Ethan Younger rolled a personal best game of 175 as well as a series best of 463 in his debut of varsity bowling. RIFLE Last Tuesday’s trip to Elizabethtown resulted in a 493-491 loss to the Bears. With only two points separating the two clubs, each marksman’s score was right in the mix with Madeleine King leading the Buckskins with a 99. The four other qualifying scores were identical 98’s supplied by Dana Witmer, Wyatt Stauffer, Montana Habecker and Joshua Reed. Elizabethtown had a similar night, but with the addition of one flawless 100 score from Emma Kreiser, the Bears edged ahead. Consistency and experience are two things coach Hank Oxendine has been focusing on with his young team-and their hard work is evidenced in their performances. “This year’s team consist of a lot of first year shooters, and I see improvement on a daily basis,” encouraged Oxendine. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Bucks basketball team took a pair of losses last week, falling to Ephrata 68-38 on Tuesday, January 15 and Warwick 38-34 the previous Friday. Against Ephrata, CV senior Savannah Byers had a season-high 16 points to lead all scorers, and Chassidy Henriquez put in another nine. Composure from the free-throw line was a cooperative highlight for CV, shooting 80 percent in their eightof-ten collective attempts. In the much closer clash against Warwick, the Warriors held the first period lead, 12-7 but the Bucks matched or outscored the Warriors’ point totals in three of the four quarters, falling by just four points at the final buzzer. Byers and Taylor Hehnly each netted 10 points to pace the Buckskin offense. SWIMMING Both CV boys’ and girls’ swimmers were dealt a loss on last Tuesday’s trip to Ephrata’s pool with the boys falling 126-44 to the Mountaineers and the girls trailing 102-67. With only eight swimmers on the boys’ roster, filling the lanes in all events can pose a challenge, but despite the loss, senior captain Joshua Proch pulled in a highlight for CV with a win in his preferred stroke, the 100 butterfly, clocking a time of 1:01.6. For the girls, there was much to celebrate on an individual level, though the Mountaineers’ depth proved to be insurmountable in the collective performance. Karli Raasch posted top times in the backstroke (1:00.91) and 50 free (25.43), while Sarah Marston also won two events with a 56.35 100 free and 2:02.1 in the 200 free, and Jordan Holmes touched first in the 100 butterfly with a 1:08.1. In the relay events, Marston, Holmes, and Raasch teamed up with Kyla Pham to claim the 400 free combining for a 3:57.33 finish. Though the girls’ squad holds double the athletes, with 16, lack of experience,
