There are many quotes exhorting people to be part of something bigger than themselves. Richmond Wandera, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has lived them. On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there. “Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is See LBC Student pg 7

When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room. According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eight-week-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student support. “Since we have been here (in See Service Dogs pg 2
Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. Sully is in need of a sponsor to fund the completion of his twoyear training before going to work helping to provide independence to a person with a disability.

Our vision would be a dog in every school or at least every district.” In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but they also aid students struggling with “the emotional aspects of school and life’s challenges.” Breece added that in some classrooms, time with a dog can be an incentive. “For some of those students who are more challenged, it’s a calming influence, and they can work toward time with the dog as a reward,” she said. Smith noted that currently UDS dogs are present in Cocalico, Ephrata, Penn Manor, and Northern York County school districts. “Each dog has a teacher or principal they go home with each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms. Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind

Resurrection Catholic School, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will join Catholic schools in Lancaster County and throughout the nation to celebrate Catholic Schools Week from Sunday, Jan. 27, to Sunday, Feb. 3. To celebrate, the school will host a Light Glows Forth ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. The event will bring together volunteers, families, donors, students, and staff to share how Catholic education aims to offer a strong academic curriculum that includes religion classes. The National Catholic Education Association has also designated Jan. 29 as a day of online giving. Called “Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools,” the event invites people across the country who have been impacted by Catholic education to donate at a local level. The school will have special activities throughout the week. Supporting parishes of St. Mary, St. Anthony, St. Joseph, and San Juan Bautista will offer Masses on Jan. 27 and Feb. 3. Resurrection is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for visitors any time. Readers may call 717-392-3083 to schedule a tour. The school’s theme this year, “Family of Faith - Guided by the Spirit,” inspired the school to thank supporters during Catholic Schools Week.

the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.” A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socialization,” explained Breece. At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training. Smith explained that many of the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors, such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicapped-accessible buttons and turn light switches on and off.” The newest puppy in the UDS program has been named Sully in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush and was photographed lying near his master’s casket during the funeral services in early December. UDS’ Sully is in need of a sponsor, which can be a local individual, organization, or business, to cover his two-year training. Breece is also looking for a sponsor for the dog program’s new training room. Readers who would like to learn more about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with UDS may visit www.udservices.org.

school students age 14 and up who would like to volunteer as buddies at camp. Buddies act as positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader. Activities at camp include swimming every day, music therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, arts and crafts, group games, and sports. “The staff give 200 percent, and they always say they feel like they learn more than they feel the campers do,” Paskoff stated. “They are really energetic, passionate people who will do whatever it takes to make (camp) an exceptional experience.” “We take every moment, and even though you think of it as just camp, we’re working on socialization and other skills at all times,” added Paskoff. Special activities, theme days, and community service are other significant aspects of camp. Through the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (AAAOK), campers ages 13 to 21 have the chance to take part in community service projects such as running an Alex’s Lemonade Stand, playing bingo at Pleasant View Retirement Community and Danner Home, and having a car wash to raise funds to donate to a local nonprofit selected by the campers. Optional programs for parents are also offered during camp, ranging from guest speakers to pampering days with manicures, pedicures, and massages. Aaron’s Acres has hosted its summer camp in Manheim since 2013. It merged its Dauphin County camp site with Manheim in 2017 and its Berks County site in 2018. Transportation to camp from Dauphin and Berks counties is available. Aaron’s Acres is currently in the process of looking for a property or space to purchase as a permanent centralized facility for its offices, summer camp, and year-round programming.

Wandera realized that a biblical solution to the problem existed. “Jesus identified a few leaders and went deep with (teaching) them and then sent them out to multiply themselves,” said Wandera. “My mantra is ‘Train one to reach many.’” This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Pastors are now being trained through LBC’s blended program, which mixes online learning with regular visits to the campus. The program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty more are due to graduate in June. Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years. The inspiration for the program had its roots in Wandera’s own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. There is very little hope there,” said Wandera. In 1991, hope arrived in the form of sponsorship through Compassion International. Wandera and one of his sisters were sponsored and began attending the church through which that sponsorship was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him. Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold. Wandera finished high school in 2000, and in 2004 he graduated from Uganda Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and began working toward his certification with a goal of training accountants to do business ethically. He began teaching accounting, but he also felt a call to become a pastor. “I was deeply moved by change that happened in our home because of the Gospel,” said Wandera. With encouragement from his pastor, he began pastoring at the church, but one night a woman who had lost a 3-year-old child to malaria asked him a question he could not answer. Distraught, Wandera returned to working in accounting. A discussion with Steve Wilson, a worker from Compassion International, brought him back to the ministry. He received the first Wesley K. Stafford scholarship to the Moody Bible Institute, with the goal of taking back what he learned to pastors in Africa. Wandera reached that goal only to find that many of the pastors needed leadership training as well as theological knowledge. That need led to him to LBC, where he began working toward his doctorate as a recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship, established in 2013.

Bucks Tops Comets In Key Wrestling Clash by Leah Sintic
Wednesday’s wrestling clash at Penn Manor held high stakes for two teams entering the night with identical 5-0 records in LL League competition, and the night belonged to the Buckskin matmen, who rose to a 40-31 win, not only keeping their record intact but taking one giant step closer to being named Section One champs. “It was an exciting win for our program,” celebrated head coach Trent Turner. “It’s nice to see new kids stepping up each week and helping the team win.” The Comets got on the scoreboard first, but CV’s Cameron Kistler started churning Buckskin momentum with his 6-4 win at 126 pounds to get the Bucks on the scoreboard.
The bouts were back-and-forth keeping the teams both within range. Austin Rider (138) picked up four points by major decision after a 12-4 display of dominance, followed by a morale boosting pin from David Dariychuk at 145. With the scoreboard knotted at thirteen apiece, Taylor Sheaffer claimed his bout at 160 in an overtime decision to give CV the 16-13 edge. The Comets retaliated with three consecutive falls, overtaking the lead 31-16, making for a big uphill climb for the Buckskins. “When we were down by 15 with four bouts to go, I wasn’t sure how we might be able to make up the deficit,” reflected Turner. The tide began to turn after backto-back Penn Manor forfeits—and
there was more to come from the Buckskin grapplers, and the dual came down to the final bouts where a duo of freshman earned their way to a fantastic finish. Trenton Ruble (106) came up big, pinning his opponent in the second period to recapture the CV lead, 34-31. Riding the momentum surge, Keaton Fischer (113) got the job done with a fall after only 1:57 on the mat, to clinch the Buckskin triumph. “Ruble and Fischer were fantastic. They didn’t seem to even be fazed by the situation and just went out and wrestled their best,” praised Turner of the young matmen. With each and every bout weighing heavily in the close victory, the team showed great unity and support for one another. “We’re not a one-man team, but we are a team of one,” concluded Turner.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL After a week with two tough league setbacks on the road, the Lady Bucks look to turn the tide as they head into the latter half of the season. In a Tuesday trip to Ephrata’s home court, the Bucks slipped to a 37-28 loss to the Mountaineers. CV outscored the Mountaineers in the first and fourth, but Ephrata gained their footing with a 30-14 surge midway through the game that allowed them to hang on for the win. Kenzie Reed picked up nine points in the loss, supported by six from Sydney Bouder, five from Ashley Andrew, and four points apiece from Savannah Byers and Lauren Thrush. The previous Friday, the Lady Bucks experienced a 36-33 heartbreak in a loss to Warwick, slipping behind in the final period after holding the lead 24-13 at the half.
CV came out strong, outscoring the Warriors in the first two quarters, led by Reed’s game-high 14 points. Again, fouls played a role, as the contest came down to the wire with the Warriors slowly chipping away at the Lady Bucks early lead. Both teams spent a lot of time at the line, and each club succeeded in just over 50 percent, with CV going 12-of-23 and Warwick 16-of-29. Varied attacks helped the Warriors work back into the game in the latter half with 10 players getting in on scoring action, compared to only five different point contributors for CV. Lauren Thrush produced the second most Buckskin points with eight, and Sydney Bouder added seven. SWIMMING CV hit the pool hard this week, racing their way to both boys’ and girls’
victories over Lancaster Catholic before splitting results against Elizabethtown later in the week. Tuesday’s meet against Lancaster Catholic was a big night for CV swimmers, honoring their 12 senior teammates and collecting a pair of team wins, alongside multiple personal best times. For the boys, an 87-82 triumph marks their third league victory. The Bucks teamed up to sweep the relay portion of the night, with Micah Leaman, Felipe Garate, Auden Block and Nick Lynam combining efforts for a close cut 400 free relay completed in 3:28.17. “The boys 400 free relay was quite exciting and our exchange student from Chile, Felipe Garate, did a great job staying close to his competition during the second leg, and the team pulled together and touched first,”

in each of the three remaining periods, the Bucks outscored the Warriors in the second half 33-26, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome the first half deficit. The long-range game was equally beneficial for both clubs, each knocking in seven buckets from downtown. Stone nailed three triples for CV, while Perkins, Joe Cardina, Ethan Bredeman, and Luke Rumbaugh notched one apiece. Complimenting Stone’s doubledigit contribution, Perkins tallied nine points, Cardina netted eight, and Bredeman was matched by Ransing for six apiece. RIFLE CV’s rifle team split last week’s results missing the mark in a 498-493 loss to Elizabethtown, but firing back with a 496-495 outshooting against Garden Spot two days later. Darren McGallicher and Montana Habecker were on their game with a pair of 100s to lead the Bucks in the league win, their sixth of the season. Dana Witmer and Alex Stoudt fired 99s, and Jason Zecher came through with the 98 needed for the one-point win. The Bucks only have three losses on their season record (5-3), but two of them have been delivered by the Elizabethtown Bears who remain undefeated midway through the season. In Tuesday’s 498-493 final, the Bears were nearly perfect, with three-of-five Photo by Bob Devonshire marksmen hitting 100s. seconds,” noted Raasch. The night’s highlights also included recognition of the squads 12 seniorsAuden Block, Sheldon Hertzler, Michael Janvrin, Hady Kassem, Robbie Krasinski, Nick Lynam, Avery Heisey, Lauren Nedrow, Lyndsey Nedrow, Taylor Tardibuono, Laurel Tuckey, and Juliana Bedoya. “We celebrated 6 girls and 6 boys who we will miss very much next year,” summarized Raasch. The boys capped the week with a 92-78 win over Elizabethtown, while the CV girls fell by a count of 98-71. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Hard work is paying off for the Bucks who secured their first league win last week in Tuesday’s 63-55 result over Ephrata. The Bucks treated their homecourt fans to a thrilling final quarter to emerge with the victory after three tight quarters. CV headed into the final period with only a one-point advantage, 41-40, and with such a slim lead it all came down to the final eight minutes. Rising to the challenge the Bucks went on a tear, outplaying the Mountaineers, 22-15. “The game was a total team effort, with contributions from everyone who played,” credited head coach Brad Herr. Parker Graff had a huge night for CV, netting a season-high 16 points. Jordan Ransing was just behind with 15 of his own, and J’Vhante Perkins and Will Stone also hit double digit figures with 12 and 10, respectively. “It was important to maintain our composure and value the basketball during the fourth quarter,” described Herr. “Ephrata fought hard and was not going to quit, so eliminating turnovers, finishing plays, and making free throws were key for us down the stretch.” Graff, Ransing, Perkins, and Stone exemplified that composure at the line, nailing an impressive combined 17-of-22 free throws, made all the more significant in a victory achieved by merely a seven-point differential. A 71-53 loss while hosting the Warwick Warriors Friday, Jan. 11, might not have garnered a tally in the win column of CV’s record, but it displayed another strong showing from junior Will Stone, who led the CV offense for the second time this year with 11 points. The Warriors did a substantial amount of damage in the first quarter, Photo by Bob Devonshire rocketing out to a 24-9 lead, but that Alexis Goldsborough grabs a rebound for the Buckskins during didn’t squelch the Bucks from making a resurgence. one finish in the butterfly at 1:00.92. Though not first place finishes, Coach Raasch also pointed out a slew of personal bests in the pool. “Felipe and Sheldon Hertzler both posted best times in all four of their individual events,” praised Raasch. Celebrations continued during the girls’ time in the pool, with a 96-72 triumph, and again the CV team took first in all three relay events. Lauren Nedrow picked up a first place as well as a personal best time of 27.33 in the 50 free. Karli Raasch supplied a pair of first touches in the 200 free (2:01.32) and backstroke (1:01.94), and Sarah Marston also captured two categories with a 55.88 in the 100 free and a 2:20.93 in the 200 IM. Aubrey Lester won the breaststroke in 1:20.43 and also shaved off over five seconds in her best 100 fly performance, an event claimed by teammate Joran Holmes with a 1:09.41. Laurel Tuckey swam a personal best in her 50 free and joined Lester, Marston, and Taylor Tardibuono for a collective win of 1:54.28 in the 200 free relay. “Laurel Tuckey had a fantasPhoto by Bob Devonshire tic swim in her 50 free, with a CV head coach Doug Helsel instructs his squad during a Section Two con- best time of 28.76 which bested her previous record by 1.16 test at Ephrata last Tuesday. celebrated head coach Barb Raasch. Historical Society Slates Music Night The annual Music Night organized by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society is slated to take place on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. This year’s Music Night will continue the tradition of involving a variety of Mennonite groups and individuals. Aspire Chamber Choir, composed of Anabaptist singers from Lancaster and Lebanon, seeks to glorify God through choral singing and share the beauty of God’s
creation of music. Having received a rich musical heritage, the group performs classic and contemporary choral works. The group is organized by the well-known Kravets family and directed by Lee Weaver. Sopa Sol, consisting of singer-songwriters Daryl Snider and Frances Crowhill Miller, will also perform. Both Snider and Miller view their music as more than entertainment and draw on their experiences in other countries and cultures to explore transformative music.
Joshua Good and Rosemary Eberly Lebold will perform a collection of classical, theatrical, and gospel selections. Good studied vocal performance at Liberty University and has performed semiprofessionally in both opera and musical theater. He has performed as a soloist for choirs including the Mennonite Choral Singers, the Altar of Praise Chorale, and the Lancaster Meistersingers. Lebold, a soprano, graduated from West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in
music in vocal performance. Merle Good will lead congregational singing. Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.lmhs.org or by calling 717-393-9745. Admission is free for children under age 12. The event is a fundraiser for Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. Proceeds will support the organization’s services, including public programs, a library and archives, publications, online services, and ministries of engaging the past as an insight into the present and future. The annual Music Night is one of more than 40 Lancaster Roots 2019 events.
