At Lancaster Mennonite, technology is stimulating learning BY JEFF FALK

t ’s a complex topic . B ut not one that energetic and curious fourth-graders can’t comprehend. Four th-g rade students at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, L ancaster, are learning the basics of electronics, robotics and coding. They’re being taught those technological disciplines through a project-based learning approach that combines elements of science, engineering, art and math. “Fourth and fifth are the middle grades,” said Jenna Longenecker Conde, a kindergarten through six th-g rade ar t and desig n teacher at Lancaster Mennonite who collaborated with fourthgrade classroom instructors to teach the curriculum. “Students have a lot of energy and are
motivated to learn. They’re more capable of doing things than they were a few years ago. They’re sort of at that sweet spot for learning. It feels like a great age to capture that enthusiasm.” A total of 37 students, broken into two classes, meet twice a week to explore the fundamentals of electronics, robotics and coding. Working in small groups, the students complete hands-on projects that promote communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. “It really can be complex,” said Longenecker Conde. “I feel fortunate to be able to work with a team to educate our students about this. They’re learning the basics of electricity, like ‘How do you let electricity flow?’ We try to break them down to their building blocks. The kids take what they’ve already learned and put it all together.” Fourth-grade students at Lancaster Mennonite School are learning about the basics of electronics, robotics See Lancaster Mennonite pg 3 and coding through hands-on projects.

Statistically, dogs are the most popular pet in America. Through the years, dogs have become humans’ best friends through a symbiotic relationship that revolves around service. No one has to tell Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central Pennsylvania (PA D) about canine service and its importance. The local nonprofit has built its reputation by filling a need for assistance dogs. “I believe dogs have a powerful
impact on society,” said PAD director and founder Linzey Zoccola. “For children, it’s as a companion. Recent studies have shown that interacting with dogs can strengthen immune systems. We have so many roles for working dogs. The physical and emotional roles that dogs play in families’ lives are so important.” PAD, which recently moved from 30 Copperfield Circle, Lititz, to 55 New St., Ephrata, trains and places assistance dogs with individuals with disabilities. Bringing God’s Word to the stage BY JEFF FALK
It’s one thing to hear the Word. It’s one thing to read the Word. It’s one thing to process the Word. But it’s another thing to experience the Word live. Piercing Word, headquartered at 1821 Oregon Pike, Suite 210, Lancaster, presents Scripture passages from the English Standard Version Bible word for word through dramatic and musical performances. The nonprofit’s mission is to “ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” “We don’t just perform Scripture; See Piercing Word pg 3 Performers shine a light on the importance of stewardship on stage.

subject matters.” Of course, the science exercises can also teach life lessons. “One of the biggest takeaways is that students have to learn to communicate and work well together,” said Longenecker Conde. “They’re learning collaboration, they’re coming to a consensus and sharing tasks. It involves critical thinking and persistence.” “(The classes are) real courses about how things work in the real world,” continued Longenecker Conde. “The students are eager to absorb information. The resources make it easier to introduce it to them. It gets them excited about trying something new.” L ancaster Mennonite School is a faith-based
private school with an enrollment of 560 students in prekindergarten through 12th grade. It was founded by members of the Mennonite religion in 1942, but over the years it has evolved to include students of var ying backgrounds and beliefs. “There’s a lot of hope for future generations,” said L ancaster Mennonite ’s director of marketing and communications, Aubrey Kreider. “The students we work with have a lot of curiosity, and they’re excited to learn.” “We’re trying to prepare students to change the world,” Kreider added. Piercing Word from pg 1 we challenge people,” said Piercing Word’s founder and executive director, Aaron House. “Scripture is our script. The Word of God is so powerful, and not just for the people on stage, but also for the people who come. Their lives will be changed when they come. It’s not just another entertainment. It’s a life-changing opportunity.” Piercing Word will bring its unique form of spiritual enter tainment to L ancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, for four double feature presentations in the middle of February. Piercing Word will present “Stewardship” and “Passion: The Musical” on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. The stage performance is expected to take 90 minutes to present. Admission will be handled on a pay-asyou-will basis. “The beauty of the music and the truth of the words create a powerful piece,” said House, adding that the performance should impact everyone present, whether t h e y re g u l a r l y a t t e n d church or not. Framed as a board game, “Stewardship” features t h re e p e r fo r m e r s a n d focuses on the importance of making good use of everything God has given us. “‘Stewardship’ is a fun,
fast-paced commentary on how to use our God-given resources, presented in the form of a board game,” said House. “It’s like Monopoly on stage. There are two players and a game master.” “ T he game master is teaching them how to play the game, and everyone gets to see how things unfold,” continued House. “We see evidence of a lack of stewardship in our lives on a regular basis, and for whatever the reasons, we end up not fulfilling God’s call. He’s entrusted us with these talents, and He’s calling us to use them for a higher purpose. We can multiply these resources in so many ways.” “Passion: The Musical” recounts the events preceding and immediately following the death of Jesus Christ. “‘Passion: The Musical’ is presented in a modern, urban style and depicts the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus, compiled from all four Gospels,” House said. “It’s a really powerful presentation of the events of Holy Week.” Piercing Word’s performances generally draw about 100 spectators. “A lot of our audience is made up of people from Lancaster who have been with us on our journey,” said House. “But there are still a lot of people from L ancaster County
who haven’t experienced Scripture performed live on a stage.” Piercing Word employs four staff members full time and works with 70 contracted performers. House founded Piercing Word in 2007 in Houston, and the organization became a full-time ministry six years later. In 2023, Piercing Word presented Scripture performances at churches, colleges, special events and conferences in 15 states. For additional information about Piercing Word, go to www.piercingword.org.

Winter can bring unique challenges, especially in colder c lim ates . From navigating icy sidewalks to preparing for winter storms, the following tips from FEMA Region 3 may help people to have a safe and enjoyable season. People should create a winter emergency kit containing essential supplies, including blankets, nonperishable food items, water, medications, and a f lashlig ht . Essenti al
supplies should be stored in cars as well, including food and water, a shovel, a w i n d s h i e l d s c r a p e r, blankets, tow chains and re f lectors, in case the dr iver and pass engers become stranded. Family members and other loved ones should establish a clear communication plan so they know how to get in touch in an emergency. Before a winter storm or drop in temperature, people should check

in on their neighbors and friends, especially older adults or others who may have unique needs, to help them prepare. Residents should keep abreast of local weather forecasts and official alerts to learn of any advisories, watches, or warnings issued by authorities. This information is critical for making timely and informed decisions during severe weather events. Ho m e o w n e r s s h o u l d winterize their homes by insulating pipes, sealing drafts, and checking heating systems. Home heating is the second leading cause of home fires, and winter is when most home fires happen, so homeowners
should ensure that heating sources are in good working condition. Taking these precautions can prevent damage and ensure a warm and safe living environment. If travel is necessar y during adverse weather conditions, drivers should proceed with caution. It takes longer to slow down and stop on icy roads, so drivers are advised to increase their following distance from 3 or 4 seconds to 5 or 6 seconds. Keep a winter emergency kit in the vehicle and be aware of road conditions. For more preparedness tips and resources, follow the organization’s #WinterReady campaign and FEMA Region 3 on X, LinkedIn, and Nextdoor.
