Lasagna Dinner To Help Fund Local Missions By Ann Mead Ash

As the organizers of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner prepared to create an Italian atmosphere for the 10th year, pastor Bruce Tully remembered some of the guests who have dined at past events. “Last year, a couple came to celebrate their anniversary,” said Tully. “Another couple from out of state drove by and saw the sign and stopped for dinner.” This year’s dinner will be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. Each year, organizers enhance the venue by adding special lighting and Italian music playing in the background. Mark Steller will again serve as maître d’ to escort guests to their tables. For the 2019 event, organizers will prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties, including hamburger,

hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce. Salad, applesauce, garlic bread, and beverages will also be served. A variety of desserts and coffee will be offered in a separate dessert room dubbed “Dulce Terrace.” Past dinners have raised approximately $2,000 for church mission trips to work in orphanages in Guatemala, serve in Israel, or perform maintenance work at JAARS headquarters in Waxhaw, N.C. JAARS is a support arm of Wycliffe Bible Translators that provides transportation and supplies to remote areas. This year, organizers have decided to help fund local mission projects, including aiding the area’s ministerium. “Part of what we raise will go to a discretionary fund that helps the Conestoga Valley Ministerium Helping Hands Fund,” explained Tully. “That is the fund our ministerium uses to help those who qualify in our district See Lasagna Dinner pg 8

Annual Banquet Will Benefit TTC/Potter’s House By Ann Mead Ash

“Our premise is understanding that recovery is not the antidote to addiction,” said Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, a nonprofit, Christcentered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. “Belonging is the antidote to addiction. So recovery can’t happen in isolation,” he explained. To help raise funds to support the ministry, TTC/Potter’s House will hold its annual banquet on Friday, March 8,

Armond “Bud” Roda at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. See TTC/Potter’s House pg 7

LMHS To Present “Bye Bye Birdie” By Ann Mead Ash

Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical. Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “Wizard of Oz” production. “We are intentional about choosing shows from different eras to help give our students a rounded theater experience,” said Sauder. LMHS will present “Bye Bye Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2. A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2. See “Bye Bye Birdie” pg 6

Kathleen Calix-Alvarado (left) will play Rosie opposite Javon Thomas (right) as Albert Peterson in the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School spring musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” which will be presented at the school on Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2.

continually takes steps to thwart the relationship. “It’s a challenge as Rosie to stay strong,” said Calix-Alvarado of her role. “She does show her sensitive spots.” Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding … and she’s being picked on by her future mother-in-law, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,” said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.” Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,” she said. “There are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.” Sauder agreed, noting that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically.

The show is known for catchy tunes, and the cast members are looking forward to presenting the songs with dances choreographed by Katie Sina-Kindig. Students mention “Put on a Happy Face,” “Honestly Sincere,” “The Telephone Hour,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” as standout numbers Schnabel noted that he hopes to see audiences enjoying the show. “With a musical like ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ (you can) a bring your (children) and parents (because it’s) fun for the whole family,” he said, adding, “It’s fun for the cast (too).” Advance tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancastermennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab or by calling 717740-2456 or emailing boxoffice@lancastermennonite.org. Kim’s parents, Harry MacAfee, portrayed by Isaac Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. While the story of Conrad and Kim plays out, Rosie is struggling to move forward in her relationship with Albert. The pair is impeded by Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Merry Yirga, who dislikes Rosie and

Cardina Nets 16 Points in Loss to Lebanon by Leah Sintic

Conestoga Valley’s Joe Cardina challenges Lebanon’s Wyatt Wells for the opening tipoff on Senior Night last Tuesday in Witmer.

CV’s boys’ basketball season came to a halt in a one-possession heartbreaker, slipping to Lebanon, 57-55, during the final home contest of the season. The close contest displayed a matched 15 field goals netted by each team, with the Bucks holding the long-range advantage, knocking in six triples compared to only three from the Cedars. Free-throw shooting proved to be a tipping point in the battle, with Lebanon getting to the line 28 times and capitalizing on 18 of those visits, compared to the Bucks 7-of-12 performance. Joe Cardina sparked the CV offense, netting 16 points accompanied by Ethan Bredeman’s 13-point contribution. The evening also held the opportunity to recognize the six seniors on the team; Joe Cardina, Parker Graff,

J’Vhante Perkins, Jordan Ransing, Nolan Rishell, and Nathan Scheid. “It was a season of adversity,” pointed out head coach Brad Herr. “It’s important to note that our young men continued to work hard and didn’t quit. In twenty years, it won’t matter what your high school basketball record was. It will, however, matter if you gave your best effort in the face of overwhelming odds.” The previous Friday the Bucks experienced another close loss, slipping to Ephrata by a count of 53-49. After falling behind in the early minutes, CV fired back in the latter half of the contest. Registering their strongest period in the third quarter, the Bucks outscored Ephrata 2717, to even up the score at 40 apiece heading into the final frame. Despite the comeback surge, the Bucks were unable to sustain enough momentum to overtake the lead and the Mountaineers edged ahead in the final possessions. Cardina once again had the highest point tally on either team, with 19. Ransing chipped in with nine, Scheid with six, and Perkins netted four. “This season we were able to provide ample opportunities for some of our younger players to experience the game at the varsity level,” noted Herr. “They gained an appreciation for the drastic differences in speed and physicality of the game over junior varsity and junior high. Next season’s success will hinge on their willingness to make the proper investment in the off-season to prepare for the next level.” WRESTLING Buckskin wrestling’s milestone season included a 7-0 L-L League run that clinched the Section One title, and earned their admittance to the District III Team Championships last week where they were outed after a showdown against Cumberland Valley. The Bucks, seeded ninth, succumbed to eighth seeded Cumberland Valley (42-17), who went on to ultimately place third in the tournament. “They [Cumberland Valley] are always a strong program, and it

of the regular season for the Buckskin marksmen, giving them an overall record of 7-6 heading into the post-season. Two of the last three contests were determined by just a one-point difference, when the Bucks fell 492-491 at Governor Mifflin and 496-495 to Ephrata. Against both opponents, CV senior, Darren McGallicher, brought his best, hitting two perfect 100s in the back-to-back meets. The final dual of the season pitted the Bucks against a near-perfect Manheim Central squad who registered four marksmen with textbook games bringing the final score 499-494. CV’s Lexus Henkel rose to the occasion with a 100 score of her own to lead the Buckskin efforts in the loss. Individual competition will be emphasized in the 2019 League Championships held on Saturday, February ninth, with results to be covered next week. SWIMMING Both the boys’ and girls’ swim teams competed in the 2019 L-L League AllLeague Meet held February 8-9 at Wilson High School. Results will be covered next week.

was definitely a tough draw for us to start with,” acknowledged head coach Trent Turner. “However, it was our first time back to the District III Team Championships in four years,” he noted. On February 2, the Buckskins hosted a dual meet event, the Rally in the Valley, and turned in a day’s performance of 2-1 to finish in second, falling 38-30 to the day’s victors, Midd-West High School. The two triumphs of the day for CV included a 72-9 win over Red Lion as well as overcoming Garden Spot by a margin of 51-26. In the dominant win over Red Lion, points in eight bouts were accumulated through forfeit, but

individual bouts. “The boys wrestled strong,” praised Turner of their team effort. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Concluding their regular season schedule on a high note, the CV girls took down Lebanon High School 58-50 last Tuesday. The Lady Bucks controlled the contest, outscoring the Cedars in three out of four quarters, hitting 19 field goals in addition to a collective 54 percent free throw shooting average. Kenzie Reed paced the Buckskins, gathering 23 points in the contest, supported by nine apiece from Savannah Byers and Lauren Thrush. Ashley Andrew chipped in another eight points in the win. The victory bumped CV’s league record to 4-9 and 6-16 overall. The previous Friday, in the final home court contest of the season, the Bucks fell to Ephrata, 35-29, but took a moment to honor the contributions of the teams five senior players; Kenzie Reed, Kylie Stutzman, Lauren Thrush, Anna Kollbotn, and Sydney Bouder. Reed again was the game’s high scorer with 11, followed by eight- and seven-point contributions from Byers and Bouder respectively. RIFLE Three close losses marked the end
