A calling from God BY JEFF FALK

God doesn’t reveal everything about Himself to us. He wants us to seek Him out; He wants us to get to know Him. Pastors like David Ryan can aid us in that search. Ryan is the pastor at Leola U n i te d Me t h o d i s t C h u rc h (LUMC), 7 W. Main St. It’s a

position that has distinct and defined duties and roles, but one that Ryan personalizes with his own character and individuality. “My job is to help discern God’s words,” said Ryan. “I don’t stand between God and people. In the Protestant faith, people should have a direct connection to God. I can certainly pray for people, but my prayers don’t have any See Pastor pg 7

The concept of entrepreneurship is a study in risk and reward. SCORE can minimize risk and maximize reward. Located at 115 E. a business have never run a business before,” said Cathy Bonser, chair person of the L ancaster-Lebanon chapter of SCORE. “They have an idea that they’re passionate about. But they don’t know how to pursue the other aspects of the business. Entrepreneurs wear all the hats - human resources, marketing , accounting. It’s very demanding, and it asks them to do a lot. In life, we can be successful when we have a mentor, when we have support from the outside.” See SCORE pg 4

t was a gathering of like-minded young people, enhanced by a strong flavor of competition. But what it really was was a celebration of flexibility, adaptability, technology and the future. On Jan. 27, the Conestoga Valley (CV) School District once again hosted the Pennsylvania Technology Student Association (TSA) Region Two competition. Over 350 students in grades six through 12 participated and competed, including some from Conestoga Valley, Manheim Township (MT), Solanco, Pequea Valley, Garden Spot and Penn Manor and from as far away as Lebanon, Berks and Chester counties. Some 40 competitions in science,

We don’t know what we’re training them for. We’re giving them skills for a lifetime. It always amazes me what those new things are.” Dozens of Conestoga Valley students took part in the TSA Region Two competition, and they represented themselves rather nicely. Conestoga Valley students brought home first-place finishes in a total of 12 events. CV High School students captured top-three medals in 10 different competitions, while their middle school counterparts garnered top-three finishes in 13 events. “Our students did great,” said Miller. “Almost every student qualified in one event. We’re excited about how our kids did. We’re excited about how all of our kids did. It was an awesome day.”

Life skills from pg 1 “Our high school students in the MT Technology & Engineering Club (MTTEC) recently competed in the Technology Student Association (TSA) regional conference at Conestoga Valley High School,” said Manheim Township superintendent Robin Felty. “ Teacher advisers B en Whitby and Rich Nolt will now shift the club’s focus to preparing for the state conference in April and MTTEC’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Fest in May. Our students took what they learned in school beyond the classroom - and found their hard work and dedication brought success.” Among the contested categories were video game design, structural engineering, flight, medical technology, mass production, website design, problem solving, coding and forensic technology. The results were determined by 100 judges who work in various related industries.

“They get to refine the stuff they’re working on,” said Miller of the contestants. “Part of the technology process is to refine things. They’re a cross section of our student population. We have the academic kids there. We have the kids who are good with their hands here. You can see every demographic there. We’re all encompassing because we work around students’ schedules. Kids make time because they know it’s important.” Through their efforts, some students qualified for the state TSA conference in Seven Springs in April. TSA is a national organization dedicated to sparking students’ interests in science, technology, engineering and math. “There are events that you can prepare for in advance,” said Miller. “Kind of like, ‘Show us the skills you’ve learned so far.’ It’s basic skills, like problem-solving skills. We’re trying to help our students define and develop their leadership

skills. How do you think outside of the box? It’s just making sure our kids are well-rounded. But beyond that, we’re preparing them for beyond high school.” “It’s really neat when you get emails from parents that say, ‘TSA is the

Entrepreneurship is what makes for a strong business climate, especially here in Lancaster and Lebanon. We’re not a county driven by large industry; we’re a county driven by small business. About five years ago, when Erica Shirk moved f ro m Pe n n s y l v a n i a t o O re g o n , p a s t o r D aw n Ranck-Hower of New Holland Mennonite Church (NHMC), 18 Western Ave., contacted Shirk’s daughter, Hilda, to ask what Erica had been doing for Union Community Care on New Holland Avenue in Lancaster. “Erica would make crafts for them,” explained Ranck-Hower, an avid crocheter who soon learned that Union Community Care was in need of afghans. Ranck-Hower explained that the afghans are given to babies of immigrants who do not have a family member or friend here to make a handcrafted blanket for their baby. R anck-Hower quickly connected with a few other crocheters at church, who then invited their family members to help out. The group’s first year making afghans for Union was 2021. More than 400 handmade items were created in 2023 and delivered in early 2024. Ranck-Hower reported that 223 afghans, 24 quilts, and 155 bibs were crocheted or knitted. “The year before that, we did about 200 afghans,” she said. The goal for the coming year is to donate at least 350 items. Ranck-Hower referred to the group of fiber arts aficionados as “a family affair,” noting that three family units are involved and that members have met together as a group only twice. Ranck-Hower has involved her sister E i l e e n R a nc k a nd h e r

mother, Rosanna Ranck, who makes baby bibs as well as afghans. Sue Martin and her mother, Mar y Shuot, are also involved, as are Dawn Kaczor and her family members, which i n c l u d e h e r d a u g h te r, Elsa Lantz, who lives in Colorado; mother, Valetta Kaczor; and sister, Carla Kaczor, both of whom live in the Souderton area. “Sue and Dawn are usually crocheting during church,” said Ranck-Hower, who is not bothered by attendees who crochet during her sermons because she understands that the hobby does not interfere with listening skills. “Ever ywhere we go, we’re crocheting,” she said. Dawn K aczor, an elementary school teacher, called the effort a “creative outlet,” noting that crocheting helps her to wind down at the end of the day. Martin crochets while attending Zoom meetings, and Eileen crochets while watching television in the evenings. The group members estimate that they work 15 to 20 hours a week creating

more meaning than anyone else’s.” From a congregation of 143, LUMC ’s average weekly attendance hovers around 70 members. “My job is to encourage them and mainly to love them,” said Ryan of the members of his congregation. “People need to know they’re loved by God and me. When you’re in a congregation, you’re not alone. It’s my role to help build connections between those people.” As the leader of LUMC, Ryan plans most of the aspects of the worship services. He prepares and presents a weekly sermon, leads Bible studies and visits people in need. Basically, he’s charged with the direction of the life of the church. “Why is a pastor needed? Because people need to connect with and be right with God,” said Ryan, a resident of Leola. “My life’s mission is to help others delight in God’s love. Some of the most rewarding time of ministry for me is when I’m with people in crisis. I take very seriously my sermon responsibilities. I sense that, for most people, it’s the most concentrated time to discover what the Scripture has to say.” In the church’s 163-year history, LUMC has had 63 pastors. Ryan is a year and a half

into his second stint as Leola United Methodist Church’s pastor. Around the turn of the 21st century, he had served in the same role for eight years. “One of the things we have in United Methodism is diversity, and we want to celebrate diversity,” said Ryan. “We have pluralism. We don’t have to agree on every belief. I strive not to tell people what to believe but help them discern what they believe themselves. Many people are attracted to that. The thing that I know is God loves us and He desires to be in a personal relationship with us.” A native of Delaware County, Ryan earned a bachelor ’s degree from Asbur y College in Kentucky. He attended Wesley Theological Seminary in

Washington, D.C., where he obtained a Master of Divinity. “I became a pastor because God called me to it,” said Ryan, who’s been a pastor for a total of 39 years. “There is no other reason to do it unless God calls you to do it. When I was 16, I felt a definite calling from God.” “Over the years, I’ve grown in many ways,” added Ryan. “Sermon writing has become much easier for me. Early in ministry, I remember I really wanted everyone to like me. I’ve grown to know that’s just not going to be, and I’m OK with that.” For additional information on Leola United Methodist Church, go to www.sites .google.com/view/leola -united-methodist-church/ home.
