DNA And Privacy Topics To Highlight Family History Conference By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming wellversed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and See Conference pg 4

Jim Hertzler, chair of the committee of Ephrata- and Akron-area churches that are planning the group’s 15th annual sportsmen’s banquet, reached back into his own hunting history when discussing the topic of this year’s event. “(Speaker Steve Sorensen) will talk about hunting boots on the ground,” said Hertzler. “Not (hunting deer) from tree stands, but walking and stalking.” Hertzler noted that he has hunted deer from both locations. “I enjoy hunting from tree stands, but I didn’t always,” he said. “I used to walk and go slow and keep my eyes open, and it’s a different approach to deer hunting.” Last year, due to the demand for tickets, the event was expanded to two nights, and that format will be in place this year as well. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 7

United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free. United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. Last year, United Way of Lancaster County’s IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 10,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns. VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts. VITA provides free tax preparation services, including federal, state and local returns, to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and who live, work or go to school in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS announced that it would will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible. The county’s VITA sites began opening on Jan. 22. Sites include Community Action Partnership,

Joel Jakubowski, who became director at Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM) in July 2018, had a personal stake in the choice of Stanley Praimnath as a speaker for the seventh annual ROFM banquet, to be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Thursday, March 21. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Jakubowski met Praimnath in 2003, when Jakubowski had been a student in Teen Challenge for about five months. “I was trying to figure out who God is,” said Jakubowski, who said that he came to the program as an argumentative atheist. When Praimnath spoke at a Teen Challenge chapel gathering, Jakubowski and his fellow students were riveted by Praimnath’s tale of surviving the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. “When Stanley came and started to tell his story, you could hear a pin drop,” said Jakubowski. “He told his heroic and faithful

(account of escaping) out of the offices that the plane actually hit.” Following the chapel meeting, Jakubowski introduced himself to Praimnath and shared his own story. “I said, ‘If your faith got you through (9/11), it can get me through Teen Challenge,’” said Jakubowski. “He said (that) I was absolutely right,” shared Jakubowski. “He said, ‘Stay the course.’” The pair stayed in touch over the years, and when Jakubowski was considering speakers, he contacted his friend. “I called Stanley without a lot of notice,” said Jakubowski. “I said, ‘The Lord put you on my heart (for this event). Are you available?’” Praimnath responded that he would make it work. “He is such a humble guy,” said Jakubowski. Praimnath was evacuated from his 81st-floor office in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when Flight 11 struck the North Tower. When told by security that the South Tower was

secured, he returned to his office in time to see United Airlines Flight 175 heading for his window. “He will vividly remind everyone of what we experienced as a nation and our resiliency,” said Jakubowski, who added that Prainmath will also expound on how God was his source of survival and rescue. ROFM is a faith-based, Christcentered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. Jakubowski said that some of ROFM’s current students will give their testimonies at the banquet, and students will perform a song or two. W hen Jakubowski joined ROFM in July 2018, the ministry was in the process of making a change by preparing to move to a former bank call center at 113 Rancks Church Road, Blue Ball. The location is currently in the process of being remodeled for the ministry. Currently, ROFM can house up to 15 men in buildings located along Route 23 in Blue Ball. The new building will be able to accommodate 50 men, and

although ROFM may eventually house that many clients, it is not the initial goal of the move. Jakubowski will give an update on the status of the move, noting that ROFM hopes to have occupancy by March and to open a thrift store by late spring or early summer. The change will mean ROFM will need more volunteers, especially to help run the thrift store. “We are looking for volunteers for the thrift store (and to serve as) drivers, teachers, and mentors,” said Jakubowski. There is no charge to attend the banquet, but individuals who would like to attend are asked to register to attend by Thursday, March 14, by calling 717-3515680 or 717-673-2119 or emailing joel@rofm.org. Table sponsorships for the banquet are available for businesses or individuals. A freewill offering will be received. Readers who would like more information about ROFM may visit www.rofm.org.

their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may

watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars, discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy G. Russell will present the keynote address, “No Person Shall Gallop Horses in the Streets: Using Court Records to Tell the Stories of Our Ancestors’ Lives,” on Saturday, March 30. Russell has worked as a reporter, writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and law editor,

along with as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School. During the week of the conference, from Tuesday, March 26, to March 30, registrants may use the LMHS library and archives free of charge. The March 30 sessions will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Early registration will end on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Sierra Club Holds Race Matt Lipsey of Harrisburg was the overall winner of the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group’s ninth annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike, held recently in Lancaster County Central Park. His time was 17 minutes, 32 seconds. Second- and thirdplace winners, respectively, were Paul Davey of Lancaster (20:23) and Daniel McMichael of Lancaster (20:53). Finishing first among women racing was Laura Brenner of Lancaster (22:43); she also finished first among women in last year’s race. The second-place winner was Bonnie Stoeckl of Pequea (24:44), and taking third place was Katie Eckman (25:03). Also running or hiking with their owners were 47 dogs of all sizes and breeds. The dog placements were first place, Cooper, owned by Tim Groth of New Freedom; second slace, Sadie, owned by Mike Helbein of Glenmoore; and third place, Cattie-Brie, owned by Gary Purfield of West Chester. A total of 234 people registered for the race, including runners and hikers, which was more than last year despite the threat of stormy weather. Approximately 90 volunteers were on hand to handle race-day activities, as well as many spectators who cheered as the participants crossed the finish line. Money raised in the event will help fund the club’s “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 29 Lancaster County organizations over the past three years, and support its outdoor activities and educational programs designed to help people better appreciate, protect and preserve the environment. Dance Collective from pg 1 audience) who we are … as artists and as choreographers.” The show will include a mixture of new pieces and those created in the recent past. Kline pointed out that the nine pieces that will be included in the show will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques that pull from modern dance. “I would describe it as moving in the moment,” she said, adding that the music will be current and contemporary and even include lyrics. Faller added, “We try not to use music that is mainstream or recognizable because we’re trying to create something new, fresh, and different.” Kline noted that dances for the family-friendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly. Costuming will include a variety of earth tones and jewel tones, and Faller described the dances as quick moving and engaging. “Our choreography could be described as colorful and upbeat,” said Kline. Faller and Kline, who first met when they attended school together in Manheim Township School District at the age of 6, both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. “In (college), we concentrated on different areas,” explained Kline, who noted that while she focused on choreography, Faller was more interested in performance. When they returned to Lancaster, they decided to start a dance company together, launching it at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. Kline explained that a goal of the collective is to contribute to other local organizations. “Another focal point is trying to get involved (to give) back to the community,” she said. “We aren’t just a performance group. We want to use our talents to give back.” On Feb. 2, the pair performed in Be the Change, an event that benefited S. June Smith Center. In addition to the taking part in the performance, Faller and Kline held two master dance classes in December and donated all the proceeds Be the Change. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the show, may be purchased at www.emmedance collective.com. Tickets should also be available at the door.

and 8, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a family-style dinner including chicken and ham balls will be served at 6:15 p.m. Each dinner will include a number of door prizes. Sorensen spoke previously at a banquet sponsored by the group, and Hertzler remembered him well. “Steve is a very practical guy,” said Hertzler, who recalled that the speaker had previously discussed hunting moose in Alaska on a budget. This year, Sorensen will present “The Path to Your Next Mature Whitetail,” drawing on his work for magazines that focus on deer hunting. Sorensen will discuss hunters who bring home especially large bucks and utilize a special test to help audience members discover the locations of the biggest whitetails. Sorensen is an award-winning outdoor writer whose column, “The Everyday Hunter,” appears in a number of western Pennsylvania newspapers. He is also a popular speaker who presents programs on wild turkey hunting and eastern coyote hunting, among others. Sorensen is also a believer in Christ, which is one reason he was chosen to speak at the event. “Our goal is to introduce people to Jesus Christ through their interest in the outdoors,”

noted Hertzler, who added that Sorensen will end his talk with his personal testimony. According to Hertzler, about 14 vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. One taxidermist will be on hand, and one vendor who sells jewelry will take part. “There are women who come to the meal, and (the jewelry) is something for them (to see),” said Hertzler, who added that husbands who attend sometimes purchase a piece of jewelry for their wives. The banquet is known for the door prizes that are given away during the meal. This year, Hertzler said that about 15 door prizes have been gathered for each event. Door prizes, which are donated by local businesses, will be designated for junior hunters ages 8 to 16 or as elite prizes, which may be won by anyone in attendance. Elite prizes generally include rifles, muzzleloaders, and bows. About a dozen Ephrata and Akron churches are involved in organizing the event. A limited number of tickets are available for each evening. Tickets may be purchased for a per-person fee by calling 717-733-2797. Organizers request that tickets be purchased by Friday, March 1.

on being heart-healthy. Healthconscious people do not need to sacrifice sweets this February. With a few substitute ingredients, even something as rich as chocolate pudding can be made healthier. Try this recipe for Chocolate Avocado-Chia Pudding from the American Heart Association, which gets a healthy boost from creamy avocado and chia seeds. Chocolate Avocado-Chia Pudding (Makes six 1/2-cup servings) 2 medium ripe avocados, peeled and pitted 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk

yogurt 3 Medjool dates, pitted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons chia seeds 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsalted chopped almonds or walnuts (optional) Instructions 1 - In a food processor or blender, process all the ingredients except the almonds until smooth. 2 - Transfer the pudding to serving dishes. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the chia seeds to thicken. 3 - Just before serving, sprinkle with the almonds, if desired.

Tiramisu is an Italian layered dessert, and the name translates to “pick me up” or “cheer me up.” Requiring no baking at all, it can be an easy treat to prepare. This recipe for tiramisu is courtesy of the American Dairy Association. Tiramisu (Yield: 9 servings) 6 egg yolks 1 cup sugar 1 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese 1 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 (12-ounce) packages savoiardi lady fingers 1/2 cup cold espresso or strong coffee 1/4 cup coffee-flavored liqueur (optional) 1 tablespoon cocoa for dusting Instructions 1 - Combine egg yolks and sugar in the top of a double boiler, over boiling water. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly. This is the sabayon. Remove from the heat and whip yolks until thick and lemon colored. Add mascarpone to whipped yolks and beat until combined. 2 - In a separate bowl, whip cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream in the mascarpone-sabayon mixture and set aside. 3 - Mix the cold espresso with the coffee liqueur, and dip the lady fingers into the mixture just long enough to get them wet. Do not soak them. Arrange the lady fingers in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish (or 6 by 9 inches). Spoon half the mascarpone cream filling over the lady fingers. 4 - Repeat the process with another layer. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Dust with cocoa before serving.

Design (PCA&D) senior illustration students joined members of the Garden Spot Village Art Guild and staff on Jan. 17 for the unveiling of the Destination Garden Spot Village spring 2019 magazine cover. PCA&D senior Annie Troller submitted the winning illustration, “Through a Child’s Eyes.” The unveiling was a culmination of hours of research, planning and design. In September, Christina Hess and fellow instructor Bill Dussinger brought their senior illustration students to Garden Spot Village to experience the community and learn about the project. Scott Miller, chief marketing officer, and Brandon Adams, graphic designer, presented the vision for the spring 2019 issue as a recap of Garden Spot Village’s envisioned future. They shared the five goals for the envisioned future, fielded questions and provided feedback on thumbnail concepts the students prepared for the day. In October, 20 students submitted covers for consideration. After a careful review of the submissions, the creative team selected Troller’s digital painting. The spring/summer 2019 Destination Garden Spot Village will be released in March. For more information about PCA&D, readers may call 717396-1032 or 800-689-0379 or visit www.pcad.edu.

Scout Troop 48 recently participated in a Klondike winter event at Camp Mack Scout Reservation near Brickerville.

After 12 years of recent shared ownership, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) and Kraybill Mennonite School have announced a new beginning. Both parties signed an agreement on Nov. 9, 2018, stating that Kraybill Mennonite School will become fully independent again beginning on Monday, July 1, 2019. Kraybill Mennonite and LMS have a 40year history of working together, at points independently and at other times jointly. Kraybill Mennonite School sought independent status in March 2018 after LMS shared the need to combine grade levels or close the campus due to decreased enrollment. The Kraybill community united in support of continued operation of the school and its mission. Desiring a Mennonite school in the Mount Joy area to continue, LMS agreed to another year in partnership, culminating with fully independent status for Kraybill for the 2019-20 academic year. “Lancaster Mennonite is pleased to see the Kraybill community rally to ensure Mennonite education continues in Mount Joy,” said Pam Tieszen, LMS superintendent. “It is clear that the transition team is as dedicated as LMS to see our mission continue. It is only with renewed community and family support that our schools are able to effectively (serve) students.” Kraybill Mennonite School continues to offer faith-integrated academic programs, and it has announced a decrease in its tuition rate, according to Kraybill school board chair Mark Graybill. He added, “Course offerings have been strengthened and changes have prompted a strong enrollment response.”

Students Host Food Event Resurrection Catholic School sixth-graders invited the student body to a food tasting event in their classroom on Jan. 11 as their endof-unit project on the study of

Western Europe. The Culture Fair event featured various stations offering chocolates, cakes, bratwurst, and breads as well as information about European countries.
