Breakfast serves Lancaster County veterans
BY JEFF FALKFor a group of local veterans, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Sure, the nutrition is important. But the real sustainability comes from fellowship, shared experiences and compassion.
The group goes by the name of Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club (LCVBC). While it’s sort of a cross between a self-help outreach program and a support group, it’s also a reminder that United States veterans have always come up with ways to get the job done.
“There’s a camaraderie with all of us,” said LCVBC founder Bill Terry. “There is a bond. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s honoring those who have gone before us. There’s an understanding that we gave to the defense of our country. It’s what all of us have in common. It might have been a higher calling
because it’s not for everyone.”
LCVBC meets on the third Saturday of every month. Over the past five years, the breakfast club had met at a restaurant in Bird-in-Hand before a fire temporarily shut down the restaurant.
“There is a bond.
We are all brothers and sisters.”
In the upcoming months, LCVBC has scheduled meetings at the Lititz VFW, 14 N. Spruce St., at 7:30 a.m. on April 20; at American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata, at 8 a.m. on May 18; and at Shady Maple Restaurant, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, at 7 a.m. on June 15. Many of the breakfasts are paid for by sponsors, including local businesses.
“It didn’t start out with a
mission,” said Terry, a resident of East Hempfield Township and a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran. “It was just a way to get vets together. It was a time to have breakfast with other veterans. Then some gentlemen began stepping up and paying for the breakfast. Now we have a jar and pass it around and collect funds for veterans’ groups. We’re still giving back to the community, even though some of us have already put our lives on the line.”
A typical LCVBC gathering could include the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, the relaying of jokes and a guest speaker.
“There seems to be a lack of understanding toward what veterans have done,” said Terry. “If you were not in battle, it’s much easier to get acclimated back into civilian life. If you were in battle, it is hard.”

At Zion Church, Moses will part the Red Sea
BY JEFF FALKMoses was a fierce, wise and strong leader. But it was because he gave himself totally over to God that he became one of the most iconic figures in the Old Testament.
The tale of Moses is a timeless story whose message is especially appropriate at this time of the year.
Zion Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, will show a stage/screen production of “Moses” in all of its glory as a way to make the Easter
season even more festive. The presentation is also in keeping with Zion Church’s mission of reaching out to the community in an effort to make it a better place to live.
“‘Moses’ is a story of perseverance and his trust in God,” said Keith Shetter, a member of Zion Church’s evangelism committee. “It’s a great testament to someone who trusted in God and was seen through during some trying circumstances. We really want people to know it’s important to have faith in someone greater
See “Moses” pg 2
than themselves. It makes it very poignant at this time of the year.”
“Around the Easter season, we try to do something that’s faith-based in the spring,” continued Shetter. “It’s just a great community offering. It’s an opportunity to introduce Jesus in the church setting. There will be opportunities to engage further in the church. That’s our hope - that it will speak to someone on a grander scale.”
Zion Church will project “Moses” on a big screen in its sanctuary on Saturday, March 23, at 2 p.m. The two-hour presentation is a 2023 recording of Sight & Sound Theatres’ stage play of the same name. The presentation is free, and everyone is
welcome. Light complimentary refreshments will be available, and no registration is required to attend.
“It’s just an open invitation to join a celebration,” said Shetter. “‘Moses’ is really engaging. It’s a wow experience. You don’t even realize you’re being exposed to God. Hopefully, ‘Moses’ would stir in people a desire to know more and speak to them in a way that makes them want to learn.”
Shetter is hoping that at least 70 people will attend.
“It’ll be a mix of people from church and people from the community,” he said.
Zion Church routinely stages a handful of outreach events for the community throughout the year, things like a community meal, a water slide day and Trunk or Treat. But none are quite like “Moses.”
“We were looking for something to engage with
the community,” said Shetter. “We do different things, not necessarily for the congregation, but for the community. We’re open to opportunities as they present themselves. The events kind of find their places.”
Zion Church, whose pastor is Karen Larson, is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. With a congregation of over 200 members, the church was founded in the early 1900s and moved to its current location in 2000.
“We gather to grow, and we live to serve,” said Shetter. “It’s not just serving ourselves on Sunday. It’s taking the Word and what we know and sharing it with our neighbors and community. It shouldn’t be an inward look but an outward look. We’re called to serve others around us. In this case, it’s a movie.”

“The interaction that goes on there is great,” said Terry. “There is an element of support to it.”
According to the United States Department of Defense, less than 1% of the country’s total population is currently serving in the military, and only about 10% of the total population are veterans. Nearly 17 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
“Vets wear hats so we can identify each other,” said Terry. “It’s not for the civilians. It’s so we know who served. I’ll look for the hats when I’m handing out business cards for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a way to come out and be with like-minded people. For

Speaking to an auditorium full of high-school girls, Dr. Sara Atwood recalled a story about the early days of seatbelts. The male engineers designing the device, noted the Dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Elizabethtown College, neglected to consider the needs of pregnant women when making the safest seatbelts possible.
“We care about having every perspective in the room,” Atwood told the girls. That’s the motivation behind Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on the campus. Director Brittany Beitzel’s decision to select “Annie Get Your Gun” as this year’s spring musical was influenced by multiple factors. The play is a personal favorite of Beitzel’s, and she cites it as the main reason she decided to pursue theater professionally after seeing it for the first time at 13 years old. “I was just so inspired by the

“As a girl in engineering myself, I’m especially proud of this effort by E-town’s new Society of Women Engineers Student Section to ‘Educate for Service,” which is our motto here at Elizabethtown College,” Atwood said. Last year, organizers planned on hosting about 30 girls, and the seats filled up immediately, so they expanded the program this year.
“It’s exciting to see the tremendous growth in just our second annual offering of this event,” Atwood shared, noting that about 100 girls were in attendance. They rotated through four workshops, including making mechanical inchworms, “Pac-Man Coding” and creating water filtration systems.
School students Mar Mendoza and Sophia Garza, the program appealed because both wanted to learn about new topics and potential careers.
introduce the girls to engineering through hands-on projects and interaction with engineering faculty and students. Ultimately, she hopes events like Introduce a Girl to Engineering will close the industry’s gender gap.
“My favorite class in high school was English,” Atwood told the assembly at the program’s start. “There are a lot of ways to be an engineer and a lot of different paths to get there. You can love to write and be an engineer. Calculus does not have to be your favorite class for you to be an engineer. You have to be able to do the math, but you don’t have to love it. Don’t think about what you want to be. Think about what you love to do.”
For Columbia High
“Engineering seems so fun, and it’s something I’ve thought about going into,” shared Mar, a freshman. “I think this program will show me more opportunities of what I might do for a career in engineering.”
Sophia agreed, adding that she was particularly interested in coding. “When you have an opportunity like today, you should take it,” said the ninth-grader. “It’s a good opportunity to learn more about STEM careers and develop a background in that in case I want to do something like that in the future.”
Atwood emphasized that the day was designed to

story, the sweeping music and the comedy,” Beitzel said. “I felt like it would be the perfect show for these kids to take on, and it also is a show that speaks a lot to some deeper meanings.”
“Annie Get Your Gun” was debuted on Broadway in 1946, featuring music and lyrics written by renowned composer Irving Berlin. The story is based on the life and exploits of Annie Oakley, a real-life sharpshooter who rose to fame in the late 19th century as a performer in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Annie, played by Mary Frances Eschenwald of Ronks, is a rowdy and kind-hearted markswoman who learned to shoot as a child to provide for her family in rural Ohio. After defeating famous gunman Frank Butler, played by Jack Etter, Annie embarks on a journey to become one of the most legendary performers in American history.
As a young woman with humble origins, Annie
faces many challenges as she climbs to stardom. The play incorporates themes such as humility, rivalry, selfless love and treating others with compassion as Annie navigates the world of show business and defies the prejudices of her time.
“It’s an incredible story that I’m really passionate about,” Eschenwald said.
“Annie Oakley is such a one-in-a-million character; she has a competitive, prideful side to her, but she also wears her heart on her sleeve and fights for equality and justice for
others.” Eschenwald and Etter will star beside Brian Boyle as Buffalo Bill and Josiah Werner in the role of Charlie Davenport.
The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts draws students from across Lancaster County, many of whom are homeschooled. This is the first year the academy will hold a show at Gardner Theater, making “Annie Get Your Gun” one of its largest-scale productions to date.

Schreiber Center adds new therapy
The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development now offers VitalStim therapy, a non-invasive treatment for children with swallowing disorders. The new service is available from Ashley Shaffer, the newest member of the speech-language department at the Schreiber Center and the first speech-language pathologist at the center to attain certification in VitalStim therapy.
VitalStim is an FDA-approved therapy that utilizes electrical currents to stimulate throat muscles, ensuring proper and safe swallowing. Swallowing, considered by many as an automatic reflex, involves a complex process requiring coordination among approximately 50 pairs of muscles and nerves across three stages. The pharyngeal phase, where VitalStim therapy is most effective, is crucial for
protecting the airway and ensuring proper movement of food from the mouth to the esophagus. Children requiring feeding therapy may include those with neuromuscular disorders, congenital conditions like cleft palates, developmental delays affecting swallowing abilities, and those recovering from surgery or injuries impacting throat muscles.
The new equipment - including the VitalStim Plus Electrotherapy and sEMG Biofeedback System, as well as VitalStim Electrodes - was purchased through an October 2023 donation of $13,050 from the GIANT Company through its Make a Difference Challenge.

Lancaster County might look like over the next 100 years.
“Lancaster County has evolved in many ways, and in many ways it hasn’t,” said Valentina Schade, LCCF’s communications manager. “The founders of Lancaster County Community Foundation were envisioning a future. That’s what contributing to a community foundation is. Those folks wanted to dream beyond their lifetimes. This has always been a welcoming county. It’s always been a county where green spaces are important. Some details have shifted, but we’re continuing to work toward a future where everyone in Lancaster County has an opportunity to thrive. It’s up to all of us to change the next 100 years.”
The first event celebrating LCCF’s centennial will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at Pod 2 at Rock Lititz, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd. It’s being called Celebrating Creative Expression, and it will be an evening of creativity and celebration of the arts.
The event is free, and everyone is welcome.
“We know that if we invest in the arts, it’s really good for the local community,” said Schade. “It’s important for students to have access to the arts. It’s a strategic way to build a thriving community. It brings people together. Creative expression and the arts is one of the things that makes us human and connects us. It’s also one of the big parts of Lancaster County’s past, and we look forward to fostering it in the future.”
In addition to light refreshments and music, Celebrating Creative Expression will feature poetry, collaborative art, a sound circle and a wearable collage called “Our Common Thread.” Also that evening, winners of LCCF’s Shaping Tomorrow grants, awards and scholarships will be announced.
About 100 to 150 people are expected to attend.
“It’s going to be a really vibrant two hours,” said Schade. “You can just walk around and choose your own adventure. You can take part in all of them, or you can sit back and watch. You can mix and mingle.
It’s a really unique, engaging experience.”
Headquartered at 24 W. King St., Suite 201, Lancaster, LCCF was founded in 1924 by Martin Harnish. Today, LCCF handles $200 million in community assets and seeks to impact the quality of life in Lancaster County through improving the environment, neighborhoods, and health, education and youth programs, as well as access to culture and the arts.
“We care for the community’s endowment,” said Schade. “It’s a tool of philanthropy. Small gifts don’t stay small. The purpose of the community foundation is to manage the endowment, so we can continue to embolden the community through impactful programs. We work with community members to implement it. Thanks to many visionary founders, we’re in a position to create opportunities that can change the next 100 years.”

Preschool holds Pirate Day
Sacred Heart Preschool in Lancaster held Pirate Day on Feb. 23, complete with a surprise treasure map. The children followed the treasure map’s clues throughout the school, leading them to cross a bridge over shark-infested waters, balance on stepping stones between the jaws of hungry crocodiles, pass a lava-oozing volcano, and other adventures. When they reached the X on the treasure map, they found Mr. X on a treasure chest filled with jewels.
Sacred Heart Preschool, located on Nevin Street in Lancaster city, specializes in learning adventures that maximize a child’s natural curiosity. In learning to read and write, students befriend the 26 letters that bring surprise adventures like Pirate Day.
LBC students to present “Daddy Long Legs”
To help celebrate the 90th anniversary of Lancaster Bible College (LBC), LBC students will present a fully student-produced musical in March. “Daddy Long Legs” will be presented on the main stage of Good Shepherd Chapel at 7 p.m.
on Thursday and Friday, March 21 and 22, and 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23. The campus is located at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster.
“Daddy Long Legs” is based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster and follows
the story of an orphan named Jerusha Abbott. Living in the John Grier Home in New England, Abbott is given a college education to become a writer by a mysterious benefactor. She dubs the donor Daddy Long Legs after seeing only his elongated shadow. Abbott sends him a letter once a month, describing her newfound experiences beyond the orphanage.
LBC students will take charge of all aspects of the two-actor show, including performance, directing, music, costumes, props, light design, sound and tech. The students leading the production are part of an LBC workshop course taught by director of musical theater Stephen Atherholt.
There is an admission fee. Tickets may be reserved at www.lbc.edu/events.
