Laughs, Music, And More CVHS To Stage “Hello, Dolly!” By Ann Mead Ash
Members of the cast of the Conestoga Valley High School production of “Hello, Dolly!” include (from left) Christina McBride, John Oechslin, Jordan Beiler, Anya Ditzler, Trey Andrusky, and Lindsey Mousch. The musical will be presented at the school on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 7, at 2 p.m. A special free presentation will be given on Thursday, April 4, at 6 p.m. for area senior citizens.
There are a lot of things that come to mind when one thinks of “Hello, Dolly!” The big musical numbers and the distinctive costumes are among them, but V. Gabriel Whitman, director of the upcoming Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) production of the show, thinks of comedy. “There’s a lot of slapstick in (‘Dolly!’),” said Whitman. “I really like (the scene) of Dolly and Horace in Harmonia Gardens when they’re eating,” he noted, adding, “The hat shop scene is super funny. It is unique.” CVHS will present “Hello, Dolly!” at the school, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 7, See “Hello, Dolly!” pg 5

A Showcase Of Utilitarian Art YWCA Plans 21st Running Redware Display Of The Race Against Racism Opens At Landis Valley Museum By Ann Mead Ash
After King Charles II granted him a charter for land in 1681, William Penn invited people with specific skills to come to live and work in the area, which he had named Pennsylvania. “When William Penn held a call for laborers to come over, potters were on his list,” explained Jennifer Royer, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum curator. Into the late 1800s, much pottery was redware, earthenware vessels and dishes made from clay with a high iron content that turned the pottery red when pieces were fired in a kiln. To tell the tale of potters who made redware in Pennsylvania, Royer has See Redware Exhibit pg 2

organized “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Traditions From Pennsylvania and Beyond.” Part one of the exhibit opened on March 10 at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, and it will remain open through Tuesday, Dec. 31. Part two, which will feature the rest of the pieces Royer has gathered from the Barnes Foundation, The Hershey Story, Winterthur Museum, and Landis Valley’s own collection, will open in March of 2020. Royer said that when she began to plan the 2019 exhibit, she realized that redware had not been displayed in the museum for quite some time. “I started to talk to institutions and private collectors,” recalled Royer. “ We were finding wonderful pieces, and the collection was getting bigger.” It was too big, in fact, to display all the pieces in one year, hence the two-year, two-part exhibit. Royer noted that one catalog will be published for the two parts. Royer explained that one reason so many potters came to Pennsylvania was in the makeup of the earth. “The clay here is similar to what was found in Europe,” she said, adding that most potters were also farmers. “They would farm, and then, when they had downtime, they would make pottery,” said Royer. “They had all the clay on their land, and redware was cheap to make.” Each town had its own potter throwing pieces on a wheel or making them in molds. “When you knew he was going to open his kiln, you would go to his place and pick from the kiln what you needed,” explained Royer. “You could also tell him ahead of time what you might want so he could make it.”

Not all potters stayed put in one town, however. Part of the display includes pieces by Willoughby Smith, a potter who took orders and even sold pottery door-to-door. Smith, who is associated with Berks and Montgomery counties, had a special carrying case filled with his flower pot samples, which fit into the bag like nesting dolls. “Smith would go around (from house to house) and ask what size pot (a customer) wanted and sell them,” said Royer. In addition to the flower pots, the display features cups, jugs, and a food mold similar to a bundt cake pan, along with a photo of Smith with one of his apprentices. Redware items, which are individually made, range from simple utilitarian plates and bowls to unusual pitchers shaped like heads. Platters were often decorated using one of two techniques. “(Potters) put glaze down on (the item), and then they scratch through it (using a technique) called sgraffito,” said Royer, who explained that the scratches allowed the natural red color to show through. Slip decoration is a technique that creates lines and writing on pieces. Decorations often include birds and flowers. “Redware has similarities to other Pennsylvania German (creations) such as fraktur and blanket chests,” said Royer. “Pennsylvania Germans love colors and designs,” she added. “Just look at their quilts.” Use of redware was not confined to the kitchen and dining room. On display in the exhibit are a chicken waterer, a bee skep, footrests for a stove, and a variety of decorative items, including a piece in the form of a tiny cabin that is really a bank. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum encompasses 100 acres in Manheim Township. The goal of the nonprofit organization is to collect, preserve, and interpret Pennsylvania German community history from 1740 to 1940. More information about the museum may be found by visiting www.landis valleymuseum.org or by calling 717-569-0401.

celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert. “The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.” The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.”
Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training. Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg. The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners. Walkers are welcome. More information about the race may be found at https://ywcalancaster.org/race againstracism. Runners and walkers who register prior to Monday, April 8, will be guaranteed a T-shirt and pay a discounted fee. Water bottles will be given to registered runners while supplies last. “Hello, Dolly!” from pg 1 for the students. “I really wanted an elegant show,” said Whitman. “It’s a big musical, but a small (number) of leads … and the students love it.” Known for its big musical numbers, “Hello, Dolly!” includes “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” and the title song. Whitman noted that the many dance numbers have been a challenge for the students. Choreographer Meghan Young is helping to sort out the dance numbers as she works with the student actors and actresses. “Hello, Dolly!” offers plenty of entertainment and an unusual take on love. “In the end, Dolly realizes she does want a husband, and she ends up getting one,” said Whitman, referring to the scene where Dolly receives the sign she has been looking for as Horace utters a few phrases she remembers hearing from her late husband. “It’s one of those happily-ever-after kinds of endings.” Tickets for all performances are available at www.showtix4u.com by searching for “Conestoga Valley High School.” Tickets will be discounted for students.

Senior citizens who wish to obtain cards may call 717-397-5231. “Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable widow and matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Anya Ditzler. The musical follows her return to New York to practice her matchmaking and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Christina McBride, with Cornelius Hackl, played by John Oechslin, and Barnaby Tucker, played by Trey Andrusky, with Minnie Fay, played by Lindsey Mousch. Dolly also solves the romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde, played by Sophia Steed, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Alejandro La Paz. In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Jordan Beiler, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of more than 35 will also feature Mary Martin as Ernestina, Holly Butler as Mrs. Rose, Joseph Weder as Rudolph, and Chris Miller as Stanley. Whitman noted that he chose the show because he knew that the material would be a good fit

The new showroom at A&B Sales & Service in Gordonville was rebuilt after the fire the business experienced in November 2018. The store invites the community to its spring open house on March 29 and 30. A&B Sales & Service experienced a devastating fire and loss in November 2018. Merv Beiler offers his overwhelming thanks to the fire companies and the local community for all they did and for their support during the rebuilding process. Abner Beiler founded the business in the 1970s and then took on the line of Stihl products in Leola. Eventually, Merv took over, and in 2014 he moved the business to 303 Queen Road, Gordonville, just south of Intercourse. Merv says he has seen a lot of changes, with the business now having trimmers and blowers available with battery power. The community is invited to A&B Sales & Service’s spring open house on Friday, March 29, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 30,

All Things Home Fair Has New Location The All Things Home Fair will have a new home this year. The annual event, which was held at Brightside Opportunities Center in previous years, will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Rec Center, 525 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, and its next-door neighbor, Price Elementary School, 615 Fairview Ave. The host sites are anchor organizations in SoWe, the southwest quadrant of Lancaster city bordered by Fairview Avenue and Prince, King, Manor, and Seymour streets. SoWe is a larger revitalization effort driven by Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and neighborhood residents, explained SoWe neighborhood director Jake Thorsen. Residents of the southwest quadrant are especially encouraged to attend the home fair, but everyone else in Lancaster County is welcome to attend. The fair is organized by LHOP and SoWe and will aim to provide helpful information for renters, homeowners, and buyers and sellers of property. Mortgage lenders, real estate agents, home inspectors, attorneys, and insurance agents will be among the exhibitors. Title companies and pest control agencies, along with the City of Lancaster, Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, and Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat, will also be represented. “We (will encourage) people to talk to each of the vendors and
enter door prize drawings,” said LHOP director of development Laurie Moir. Among the prizes is a family pass to Conestoga Pines Pool. “There are lots of giveaways just for coming,” added event cochair Carole Kirchner. She noted that while giveaways are fun, the real prize is the knowledge folks will glean at the event. “My daughter came two years ago, and afterward, she said, ‘ What a really neat event,’” Kirchner related. “You will walk away with something you didn’t know.” The event is open to everyone - not just first-time homebuyers and children will be welcome. There will be activities for the youngsters, including the opportunity to decorate Easter bags and go on a scavenger hunt. There is also a playground behind the rec center and near the school for outdoor play. Four seminars will be offered at the fair. Although attendance will be free of charge, due to space limitations, folks who plan to attend any of the seminars should register by searching for “All Things Home Fair” at www.eventbrite.com. The seminar topics will cover the pathways to home ownership, real estate investing, rental etiquette, and how to be an attractive rental candidate. “We’re emphasizing being your best advocate and having the tools to navigate the (rental or homeownership) system,” Moir

United Disabilities Services (UDS) Service Dogs, a nonprofit organization committed to serving people with disabilities in Pennsylvania, has been accredited by the Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is a worldwide coalition of nonprofit programs that train and place assistance dogs. ADI’s objectives are to establish and promote standards of excellence in all areas of assistance dog acquisition, training and partnership; facilitate communication and learning among member programs; and educate the public on the benefits of assistance dogs and ADI membership. Assistance dog organizations that pass ADI’s accreditation process become ADI Accredited Member programs and are assessed every five years to ensure they meet the highest standards in the industry. In 2018, UDS moved its corporate headquarters to a new location, allowing for substantial growth in its service dogs program. UDS Service Dogs specializes in dogs to assist individuals, including veterans with mobility disabilities. The dogs are trained to provide services such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, helping to remove jackets and socks, retrieving and delivering items, and pushing elevator buttons. They also provide affection and companionship. UDS Service Dogs also trains dogs to assist individuals with autism. These dogs’ job is to help with pressure, interrupting behavior, and alerting or finding an adult. The UDS Service Dogs program is growing and looking for new clients to match with the specially trained dogs. UDS Service Dogs has also begun placing dogs in educational facilities. Within the past year, 15 dogs have been placed in central Pennsylvania. Facility dogs help engage students during school, with the goal of helping them remain focused on their work, thereby creating a viable learning environment. Facility dogs are also intended to promote positive feelings and to help calm fear and anxiety. For more information, readers may contact Lori Breece at lorib@udservices.org or visit www.udservices.org.

Prima Theatre Company, 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, will present “Godspell” in April. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, April 5, 12, 19, and 26, and Saturdays, April 6, 13, 20, and 27. The musical by Stephen Schwartz loosely follows the parables of Jesus with humor and playful storytelling. Instead of a religious or historic focus, the musical centers on the building of a community out of an eclectic group of people. The show features well-known songs such as “Day by Day,” “All Good Gifts,” and “By My Side.” The show began as book writer John-Michael Tebelak’s thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University in 1970.
