“More Love Letters” Provides Encouragement
Royal Accomplishments By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
“When my girls were teenagers, we heard of ‘If You Find This Letter,’” said Deanna Riccardelli, a member of More Love Letters Lancaster, referring to a memoir by Hannah Brencher, who began writing letters to strangers in New York City when she found herself struggling emotionally. “She would write the kinds of things she wanted to hear,” explained Riccardelli, noting that Brencher found that sharing and encouraging others helped her out of her own depression. After Brencher wrote about her experiences, she founded The World Needs More Love Letters, and a movement was born. “(I) did this with my See More Love Letters pg 3

On Feb. 22, the Fairmount chapter of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) met in the Crest View Gathering Room. On a blackboard were written the words from Second Timothy 1:7, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” The night was special for a number of reasons. Rita Richard, who oversees the group, had arranged for a cooking competition featuring low-fat and lowsugar recipes. Her husband, Kent, judged the dishes along with Aaron and Kate Zimmerman and Mitch Hannah. As awards were given out for entries that included meatballs, shrimp, and chocolate and strawberry desserts, Rita promised that recipes for all the entries See TOPS Chapter pg 8 After

daughters six or seven years ago,” recalled Riccardelli. “We would leave love letters around the city (of Lancaster).” More recently, when Brencher asked for people to gather and write more love letters, Riccardelli decided to get involved. “(More Love Letters is) trying to build community groups (that) write to (others) in the community who need encouragement,” she explained. On Feb. 22, Riccardelli and Jennifer Oehme Knepper met at a small café in Lancaster to write. It was the third month that More Love Letters had met. The group, which Knepper noted usually includes up to seven individuals, moves its meeting location in order to support local businesses. “Today we wrote letters to those people listed on the website,” noted Riccardelli, explaining that the individuals on the More Love Letters website are nominated by others who write down the nominees’ stories. Six letter recipients are chosen each month. “Last month the group focused on people in the local community who could use encouragement,” explained Riccardelli, who added that the group would love to receive nominations of area residents who could benefit from an uplifting letter. “We have watched for (people) in the news. It doesn’t have to be something major,” shared Riccardelli, who added that someone who has broken a leg and is housebound might appreciate a letter. Recipients might also receive a letter that is more congratulatory than consoling. “If they are doing something amazing, we tell them, ‘We see you and appreciate what you’re doing,’” said Riccardelli. Knepper emphasized the significance of a handwritten letter in a time when texting and email are more often the methods by which people communicate. “We always connected with writing, and we’ve lost that,” she said. Riccardelli agreed. “In your mailbox, you have bills, flyers, and junk, but when you find something personally handwritten in

recommended age limit, provided the children, accompanied by their parents, can sit quietly throughout the performance. The idea for the show was conceived in 1986 by Kenneth Kleinfelter, who ministered as “Captain Ken” in his marionette ministry based in Renovo, and his puppeteer friend Robert Knechtel, who was an accomplished marionette maker and performer, having been on television in the Buffalo, N.Y., area throughout the 1950s and ’60s. Knechtel passed away a decade ago, and Kleinfelter is unable to perform. His family decided to give the Marionette Passion Play to Dunfee of Gordonville. With the show in its new home, Dunfee has assembled a volunteer team and is seeking additional places to perform in the Lancaster County area. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. For more information, readers may contact Dunfee at 717-203-8670 or joe@dunfee.com.

would be gathered in a booklet for all the members. The delicious-looking entries were spread over a table at one end of the room, and the members were abuzz with conversation, a setting more akin to a fellowship meal than a weight-loss group. The air of celebration encompassed more than the excitement over the competition. The evening was also a time to mark important milestones for members Lori and Andy Miller, who were named queen and king in their respective weight loss divisions in the chapter for their accomplishments. The group was celebrating Lori’s Century Mark, meaning that she has lost more than 100 pounds. Rita presented Lori with a number of gifts, including a bouquet of artificial roses in a variety of colors. Rita explained
that each color of rose stood for a special thought. “Yellow roses are for joy and celebration … pink roses are for admiration,” noted Rita, who added that other colors stood for rejuvenation, energy and invigoration, and exultation. “We know your faith has been your help through and through,” said Rita, who also gave Lori a collection of 100 notes of encouragement for her to open daily for the next 100 days. Lori also received a shirt emblazoned with the words “Crafted in His Image.” Rita read the smaller lettering on the shirt for all the room. “The fine print says, ‘We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ so we can do good things that He planned for us all along,’” said Rita, adding, “We are very proud of you and want to celebrate this occasion.”

Lori stated that she started attending TOPS two years ago at the end of January at the urging of her mother, who was attending a TOPS group in Rhode Island. “She knew I wasn’t feeling great, and she was worried for me,” noted Lori. “She would not let it go until I called TOPS.” Lori decided to join, feeling that the group would help her stay accountable. “I have learned things,” said Lori. “It’s encouraging. It’s friendship, and it keeps me honest.” By working with her doctor, Lori was able to set a weight-loss goal they both felt would be healthy for her. “When I first came, I would have been (thrilled) to get to a size 14,” Lori said. “But when I got rolling, I was learning and encouraged.” Eventually, Lori lost 105 pounds according to the TOPS scale. “Now I am a size 10, and I never imagined I would be this size,” said Lori. Andy began attending TOPS with Lori to be supportive. “It wasn’t an easy decision to come here,” Andy admitted. However, he liked what he heard at meetings, so he joined as well. “TOPS saved my life,” said Andy, who has now lost 65 pounds. Both Lori and Andy may be honored again as regional or even state winners when they attend TOPS Southeast Pennsylvania Region ARD (Annual Recognition Days) in Reading on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18. “TOPS promotes making heathy life style changes and choices in your eating and activities for a lifetime,” Rita noted. “We don’t promise quick fixes or promote unrealistic images. Instead, we focus on health.” She added that the environment of the meetings is intended to provide encouragement to members throughout their TOPS experience. “We can offer support through each stage of the journey,” she said, adding, “The meetings are part educational and cheerleading for making better choices. As our group slogan says, ‘We are each a masterpiece.’” Readers who would like to know more about TOPS may visit www.TOPS.org.

Taylor Zimmerman picked up a pair, and Madison Buckley, Hayley Schwartz, and Ellie Livingston each supplied one. On the other end of the field, the CV defense only allowed the Mountaineer’s three clear shots, giving them minimal opportunity to retaliate. “We doubled the ball, made effective checks, and played tough defense
when Ephrata was clearing the ball,” elaborated Chadwick. Two big L-L victories put them ahead in their league count 2-1, with wins over Warwick and McCaskey but slipping to Hempfield. In nonleague play the team dropped match to Manheim Central. Manheim Central dealt the Bucks their first loss in the season opener on the CV courts, jumping ahead with a 6-1 final score. Buckskin duo Owen Horst and Matthew Hoy combined efforts to reel in the one CV victory, claiming their doubles match with an 8-4 triumph. The squad rallied with a 7-0 triumph in their first league match, hosting Warwick last Wednesday, March 27. Horst, Hoy, Luca Puleo, and Tegan Lapp each picked up a singles and a doubles win, and Nolan High and Devin Gerety stepped in to complete the sweep in the number three doubles slot. “I was pleased to see that each player is battling, never giving up or being content,” noted head coach Dale Gregg. “I have asked them to play using their strengths against their opponents’ weakness-they seem to be probing to find that weakness.” After a 5-2 loss to Hempfield, the squad demonstrated their resilience in a 6-1 takedown of McCaskey. Against McCaskey, Hoy, Puleo, and Lapp each topped their singles competitors in back-to-back sets and Photo by Bob Devonshire also claimed doubles points. In the Hempfield match, Puleo earned CV’s one single victory in a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 15-13 battle. Andrey Diaz and Luke Taylor teamed up for another CV point in number three doubles. “We need to stay positive even in the face of adversity,” explained Gregg. “How we respond will determine the tone of the season.” TRACK The first outdoor dual meet of the season pitted CV against Manheim Township, resulting in a 94-56 win for the CV girls and a 102-47 loss for the boys. Despite a rain postponement, the Buckskins were ready to compete when the time came, with two new school records being set. Jane Livingston broke her own record in the 100 hurdles, winning with a new CV fastest time of 13.9. A second record was set by the 4 x100 relay team, comprised of Sarah
Castronova, Livingston, Dana Wentz, and Jordyn Hock, claiming first place points along with a new Buckskin time to beat of 48.9. Hock picked up two individual wins with a 12.4 100-meter dash, and a 26.4 in the 200. Castronova also topped two events, the 400 (60.1) and the 800 (2:33.5). Alexandra Slingluff ran the quickest 1600 with a time of 5:44.3. Destiny Ellerbe sent her shot put 31-3.75 and Aaliyah Laukhuff sent the discus 84-5 for two throwing wins, and A. Dodd delivered the best high jump of the day clearing 4-8. “The team performed very well for our first meet. Everyone did a nice job competing, and the results show that,” praised girls coach Nick Loreto. Though the boys did not pick up a team win, Joe Cardina represented the Bucks with two jump wins; a 41-5 triple jump and 6-2 high jump. Additional individual first place
points came from Nate Grucelski who won the 1600 in 4:48.8 and Joshua Mathiot rocketed the shot put 39-2. Prior to the start of the outdoor season, achievements were already underway for a few athletes at indoor competitions at the state level. Livingston ran the 60-meter hurdles in a personal best time of 8.38 seconds to be crowned state champion at the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor State Championship held at Penn State University. “She defeated the reigning state champion to capture the impressive win; and is only the second CV rack athlete to ever win an indoor state title,” pointed out coach Rick Periandi. Cardina rose to the occasion in his high jump event, clearing a 6-6 jump to come in fourth place during the state meet. “It is the third highest jump by a

PENNYSAVER CV track athlete in school history,” noted Periandi. BASEBALL Buckskin baseball put on quite a show for their home fans in their season debut, pulling out a 16-15 win over Ephrata last Wednesday. The high scoring battle started quietly for CV, with Ephrata edging ahead with the first five runs scored, but the bottom of the third changed everything as the Buckskin bats caught fire, and drove eight runs. “The inning was a complete team effort,” praised head coach Jeffrey Craig. “They batted around that inning so every player contributed in some way.” The next three innings were a baseball fans’ dream with each team working the rotation, getting runners on base and crossing additional runs. After five innings, both teams had registered 12 runs, and the Mountaineers took advantage of the top of the sixth to add three more, but CV managed one better during their subsequent at bat. Of the four pitchers that contributed, Alex Umble registered the win. Jarrett Imler and Airam Conde each threw for the Bucks prior to Umble’s entrance and
picked up two strikeouts apiece. Gavin Horning played the role of closer, and got the job done, embracing the challenge and seeking the opportunity to “shut the door,” as described by his coach. “We stress the role of playmaker, and the players define this as someone who make their teammates better,” elaborated Craig. When it came to batting, CV outhit Ephrata 14-9, with Nolan Rishell claiming three of those hits. Jayden Taitano had a great day at the plate, with three RBIs and adding a homerun to his resume. Imler also chipped in three RBIs to the win. Defense was on display in the seventh, as the Buckskin field held the Mountaineers hostage, allowing zero runs, one of only two scoreless innings for Ephrata. Coupling that defensive composure with their one-run advantage sealed the win for the Bucks. With the game on the line, the entire defense pulled together to ensure victory. Extra effort from players such as Imler, who tracked a fly ball into foul territory to snag one of those three critical outs, allowed the team to seal the game and render their final at bat unnecessary.
“Ephrata is a great team with a great leader. They fought hard for seven innings and showed a great deal of heart,” acknowledge Craig. “Our senior leadership worked hard to ensure our team did not lose hope. The best words to describe the players for the entirety of the game are gritty and tenacious.” SOFTBALL Softball jumped out to a terrific season start, claiming their season opener, 10-4, over Ephrata. Montana Habecker was awarded the win after striking out seven and walking four in her seven innings of work. Ephrata struck first in the contest, crossing a lone run in the bottom of the first. The CV retaliation was fierce in the second-crossing seven of their ten runs in that frame alone. “We came out swinging our bats,” explained head coach Larry Minney. Kahlan Ciardullo rose to the challenge with a phenomenal 4-for-4 day at the plate which included three doubles, and Olivia Mellinger’s 3-for-3 performance boasted a triple. Jackie McBride and Michele Lopez each went 2-for-4 giving the Buckskins plenty of depth to work with. “We still have a lot of things to work on. All in all I thought we played well,” encouraged Minney.
BOY’S LACROSSE Last Tuesday’s opening game at Ephrata was a tough loss for CV, falling behind 17-2. The Mountaineers offense was relentless, firing 23 shots at the Buckskin goal. CV keeper Jose Perez snatched up four saves and Justin Norwood grabbed two in his time defending the net. CV was able to return fire for 11 shots on goal, with their two successes coming from Zach Fisher and Charles Braught. VOLLEYBALL The Comets of Penn Manor handed the Buckskin volleyball squad their first defeat this season. Taking the contest in

three consecutive games (25-17, 25-16, 25-18), the Comets pulled away from the start and allowed little room for the Bucks to get back into the contest. CV’s Tanner Shertzer provided 17 assists and four digs, while brother Sawyer Shertzer added six kills and fired two aces. Jayden Rice was a presence at the net coming up with two CV blocks. SWIMMING While most winter sports had concluded their season, senior Nick Lynam and sophomore Karli Raasch did everything in their power to extend the Buckskin swimming season, earning themselves a trip to state competition at
Bucknell University in mid-March. Lynam raced in two events touching fifth in the 200 free where he put up a personal best time of 1:40.13 for a new school record. Also competing in the 500, Lynam’s time of 4:36.19 was good enough for 10th place. Raasch represented CV in the 100 fly, and capped her sophomore season with a 16th place finish. “Making it to states is a great accomplishment,” commented head coach Barb Raasch. “I am proud to have worked with them during their season and appreciate all they did to help the CV team.”

The Master Gardener organizers of the 27th annual Shirley R. Wagner Garden Symposium have once again planned an event to appeal to anyone with an interest in gardening. Speakers during the event will talk about trends in gardening, weeds, woodland wildflowers, native bees, and plants for pollinators. An update on the spotted lanternfly infestation will also be offered. “For a gardener, this is the place to be, said symposium co-chair Brenda Walker. Fellow co-chair Holly List added, “It’s a wonderful place to talk with other gardeners. The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. When the doors open at 7:45 a.m., a continental breakfast will be available, and attendees may shop the Gardeners’ Marketplace. John Yoder’s first visit to Romania occurred in 1990. “I was with an evangelist, Steve Wingfield, recalled Yoder, who traveled along with pastor Alvin Horning of Grace and Truth Church in Morgantown. Yoder had met Wingfield when he was holding meetings in Lancaster County. When Wingfield traveled to Romania to hold meetings on soccer fields, Yoder and Horning went along to help with setup and teardown. It was there that the men met Mircea Damien, who was ministering to the people of Romania in the first years after the fall of communism in 1989. A friendship between the three men developed, and Yoder and Horning began helping Damien, first by building churches and later with the founding of an orphanage, after-school program, and outreach to Gypsies, also known as Roma, living in southern Romania. In 2001, Romanian Christian Outreach Foundation (RCOF) was founded. To help meet the organization’s annual budget, a yearly dinner is held. This year’s event, which will feature a menu including fried chicken, will be held at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Monday, April 29, at 6:15 p.m. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m.
Yoder recalled that he first started helping Damien to build a church in the Hunedoara region, which is in the central western area of the country, in 1991. “It took about three years to build, said Yoder, who added that the church quickly attracted people from surrounding villages, who then wanted their own churches closer to home. The group next began working in southern Romania, which is inhabited mostly by those of Gypsy descent. In addition to building churches, RCOF regularly helps purchase shipments of wood for that area for heating fuel. Truckloads of flour, cornmeal, and oil are delivered as well. “The Gypsies are very poor, explained Yoder’s daughter, Denise Zimmerman, who is helping to organize the banquet. “Sometimes they have to choose between heating their house and feeding their family. Around the year 2000, Damien pointed out the need for an orphanage in the area. The Romanian government was not providing state orphanages, and many orphans were homeless. “We decided to purchase a house with three acres, said Yoder, who noted that the land provided room for a garden and an area for children to play. “As (House of Joy orphanage) grew, we needed another place, so we built a second home with single and double rooms, added Yoder, noting that the 10 children lived in a homelike setting
Representatives of Romanian Christian Outreach Foundation distribute wood and food to those in need in Romania. The foundation has built churches, founded an orphanage, and instituted an after-school program in Romania. A fundraising dinner featuring Christian comedian Gordon Douglas will be held at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, New Holland, on April 29 at 6:15 p.m. rather than an institutional setting. In addition, RCOF supports an afterschool program that provides a meal, a place to bathe, clothing, a Bible study, and tutoring help for more than 20 children. “(That program) started when teachers from the Romanian schools came to the church and said there were children who didn’t have enough food and asked if the church could provide a meal for them, explained Yoder. A freewill offering will be accepted at the April 29 event. Yoder hopes to raise up to $40,000 to help the orphanage.
The evening will feature the comedy of Gordon Douglas. Douglas, who has previously performed locally, is known for entertainment that is imbued with humility, honesty, and a passion for God. Douglas combines life lessons and even painful events into a program that mixes reality with his love of laughter. Douglas and his wife, Dawn, have five children. Table and other sponsorships are available for the dinner. Readers who are interested in a sponsorship or who have questions may call 717-278-9112.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County has announced that its newest class of CASA volunteers was sworn in on March 20 by Judge Jeffrey J. Reich. The ceremony was held at Emerald Foundation on Oregon Pike in Lancaster. The newly appointed CASA volunteer advocates join more than 200 other community members who have been trained and are advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. Advocates’ goal is to ensure that the children’s needs are recognized and the children’s best interests are considered both in the courtroom and in the community. CASA seeks to ensure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. The eight new CASAs are Annie Rose Ansley of Lancaster, Charles Blakinger of Lititz, Kelley Greiner of Lititz, Bonnie Horton of Lancaster, Ellen St. Cyr of Lititz, Leigh Trayer of Lititz, Kim Wallover of Lancaster, and Rebecca Nauman of Mount Joy.
