Lancaster County has enjoyed a rich history of health, spirit and comfort. That prosperity is deliberate, nurtured and purposeful.

It’s the type of prosperity that also helps form a community from a county.

As the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) continues the yearlong celebration of its platinum anniversary, it has now turned its attention to well-being and vibrancy. That universal concept of prosperity will provide the focus for LCCF’s next celebratory event.

Maybe it was a way to conquer a new frontier. Maybe it was the desire to defy gravity. Maybe it was a response to a need for faster transportation.

But humans have always maintained a certain healthy fascination with flight. Not only is the Aviation Venture Crew continuing to explore aspects of flight, but it’s also seeking to promote them.

“It’s like a freedom thing,” said Doug Eadline, a co-adviser of the Aviation Venture Crew, as well as a licensed pilot and a ground

maintenance supervisor at Chester County Airport. “When you’re up in the air, you feel like you can do anything and go anywhere.”

In an attempt to further its cause and attract new members,

“We explore anything and everything related to aviation.”

the Aviation Venture Crew will conduct an open house and drop-in on Saturday, April 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Smoketown Airport, 311 Airport Drive,

Smoketown. The event will serve as an opportunity to meet current members, hear about some of the activities that the Aviation Venture Crew engages in, and generally learn what the crew is all about.

There will be an airplane to explore, as well as a flight simulator.

The open house is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

“The atmosphere should be pretty light,” said Eadline. “We’re trying to attract new youth to the organization. We’re kind of unique to Lancaster

Heels, sneakers, dress shoes, boots, flats. All kinds of footwear.

Eve Kirchner likes shoes just as much as the next young person. But recently the Manheim Township resident developed a new and deeper appreciation for them.

Industrious Eve is waging her own personal shoe drive. It’s a mission whose nature is altruistic on a couple of different levels.

“This involves a lot of work, and she’s learning responsibility in general,” said Antonella Kirchner, Eve’s mom. “When we heard about helping people around the world needing shoes, it struck at both of our hearts. That’s a big part of it. But it also involves a lot of organization. It’s almost like she’s had to learn how to run a small business. If we don’t keep up with it, it can be overwhelming.” A homeschooled seventhgrader, Eve is collecting gently

“Lancaster County is a vibrant place to live, work and play,” said Val Schade, LCCF’s communications manager. “That’s why we want to make it more vibrant. We want it to continue to be vibrant for everyone who lives here. From a community perspective, it’s providing access for all people, whether it’s physical, financial or mental resources, to make that possible. It’s about investing in programs that are working in the community. Well-being and vibrancy are multifaceted.”

Touted as an afternoon of health and wellness activities, Cultivating Well-Being and Vibrancy will be presented as an outdoor tent event on Saturday, April 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Buchanan Park, 901 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster. The event is free, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

“We’re celebrating as an entire community,” said Schade. “The question becomes, ‘What can happen in a community when we promote well-being and vibrancy?’ If we want our community to reach its full potential, we have to invest in it.”

Included in the afternoon’s activities will be presentations on writing from the heart, financial well-being, positive aging, health resources, collaborative art, nourishment and replenishment, core and gentle movement, alternative health and the sharing of voices with WITF. Keynote speaker Janine James, vice president of Work Wisdom, will deliver an address in the middle of the festivities.

The recipients of LCCF’s next round of Shaping Tomorrow awards will also be announced.

“We’re hoping for a big crowd,” said Schade. “It’s community-led, and folks can choose their own adventure. People will be there checking it out. You can engage in what you want to engage in. We’re making these events so they’re open to everyone.”

Cultivating Well-Being and Vibrancy is the second in a series of four LCCF-sponsored events celebrating the nonprofit’s 100th year of stewardship in conjunction with the county’s endowment.

The first, Celebrating Creative Expression, was held on March 27 at Rock Lititz.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 750 E. King St., Lancaster, LCCF will present Elevating the Next Generation, an event centered on youth and looking ahead. Then, at the Farm at Eagles Ridge, 465 Long Lane, Lancaster, on Thursday, Oct. 17, LCCF will conclude the series with Protecting Our Planet, an evening of nurturing and celebrating nature.

“The community foundation exists because in 1924, visionaries in Lancaster County were thinking about all of us,” said Tracy Cutler, LCCF’s executive vice president. “As a community, we have an opportunity to spark ideas and to consider commitments we can make and action we can take today to set Lancaster on a path for future

generations and the next 100 years.”

“At Lancaster County Community Foundation, we care for the county’s endowment,” said Schade. “We are inviting folks to be a part of that. Everybody is invited to help shape the future of Lancaster County. We get together with folks from the county and form partnerships that create opportunities to help shape a better future for all of us.”

used shoes as part of a project that will raise money for a Girl Scout trip to Hawaii, where she and other members of Troop 70674 - which meets at Grandview Church, 888 Pleasure Road, Lancaster - will perform more service projects. Eve’s collected shoes will go to Funds2Orgs, an international organization that supports small businesses by providing gently used shoes to sell.

“If I do this, I get to go to Hawaii, and that’s definitely a pro,” said Eve. “But we need people’s help to spread the word, just getting people to know about it. We need help to be able to reach our goal. We need the community to be part of our mission.”

Eve is employing a few different methods to collect the shoes.

In addition to using social media, she has placed empty bags on local residents’ doors and has set up drop-off boxes at four locations: Grandview Church; Popovsky Performing Arts Studio, 245 Butler Ave., Lancaster; Griddle & Grind Café, 20 W. Main St., Ephrata; and McKonly’s Garage, 3651 Horizon Drive, Mountville.

“A lot of people love shoes to match outfits,” said Antonella. “It’s estimated that 70% of the world depends on second-hand shoes and nearly

Fairmount posts sandwich fundraiser

A ham and cheese sandwich fundraiser, held jointly with the local Youth for Truth group, is underway at Fairmount, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata. To place an order by Friday, April 12, call 717-354-1800 or stop by the front desk at Fairmount.

The sandwiches may be picked up on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. just inside the front door of the Wheat Ridge building. Payment is due at pickup. Proceeds will go to the Fairmount Sharing Fund to aid Fairmount residents in financial need.

300 million people don’t even own shoes. We think that’s astounding. A simple pair of shoes protects feet.

People need to walk places. It’s more than fashion; they’re used for practical purposes.”

Eve needs to collect 100 bags or a total of 2,500 pairs of shoes to make it to Hawaii. Since beginning the shoe drive on Feb. 26, she’s collected a lot of shoes, but she still has a long way to go before it ends on Friday, April 26.

“We’re tracking really close. We are tracking where we need to be,” said Antonella. “We need about 10 bags a week. If we can get (the message) in front of enough people, it’s attainable. We do have the support of the other troop members.”

Eve joined Troop 70674 when she was 5 years of age, and she’s already been a Girl Scout for seven years.

“It’s nice to see what running a business would be like,” said Eve. “You have to work to get what you need. You have to organize stuff and work with other people. It’s just fun getting together with girls who are willing to care for other people.”

UDS to host evening of giving, caring, growing

When you cherish life as much as United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) does, you take every opportunity to celebrate it.

Sure, UDS’ upcoming gala is a fundraiser designed to raise awareness of its work with people with disabilities and individuals who are aging. But at the heart of it, the gala is a celebration of life.

“Can you imagine being up in the morning and not being able to get out of bed?” said Larry Aubrey, UDS’ director of development. “Our caregivers help with those basic needs. That’s what UDS is all about. Our clients just want to be regular, normal people like everybody else. We help them lead the best lives they can.”

clients.”

About 300 clients, family members, sponsors, community members and UDS advocates and supporters are expected to attend the gala. UDS is hoping to raise $60,000, a sum that will be directly applied to in-home living personal care, one of 14 programs that UDS operates.

The 15th edition of UDS’ annual gala will be presented on Friday, April 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. It will be a night filled with refreshments, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, live and online auctions, entertainment and fellowship.

“When I hear ‘gala,’ I think of a party,” said Aubrey. “It’s a special occasion. It’s set aside for a special purpose. It’s really people wanting to have a fun time. (The UDS event is) not a black-tie gala. It’s about raising funds and raising awareness. We try to show the folks in attendance how their donations will be used to impact our

“People are always going to need the services we provide,” said Aubrey. “People with disabilities and people who are aging in their homes are always going to need these services.”

The gala is one of three major fundraisers that UDS conducts annually. UDS’ holiday gift wrapping station at Park City Mall involves 250 volunteers and raises about $50,000, and its annual golf outing at Crossgates Golf Club in August brings in nearly $30,000.

“We get a tremendous amount of our program funding from the state, but it doesn’t cover all the costs,” said Aubrey. “The rest has to come from fundraisers. We want our

The origin of UDS can be traced to 1965 when a local girl in a wheelchair named Anna was unable to attend a showing of “Mary Poppins” because of her disability. Last year, 350 UDS employees provided quality-of-life-improving services to more than 6,000 individuals.

“There are a lot of folks out there who continue to need our help,” said Aubrey. “UDS is changing lives every day for people with disabilities and for people who are aging. We feel very blessed that we’re able to provide these services to our friends and neighbors, and we can be depended upon. We’re here to help people lead full lives.”

Support for grieving parents

BASIS stands for Brothers and Sisters in Support. The organization, a branch of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), is a grief support ministry for parents who have lost a child.

Jenny Snyder, independent living and social service advocate with Garden Spot Village (GSV), has coordinated support groups for the retirement community for many years. Some time ago, a GSV resident recommended Dan Steinman, director of BASIS, as a guest speaker for a monthly support group. “I was familiar with the name, and some people from the grief group knew him and were involved with HVMI,” recalled Snyder, who added that a few months ago another GSV resident suggested starting a BASIS group at GSV. “I talked it through with my team,” Snyder reported, adding that traditionally grief groups at GSV have consisted of mostly widows and widowers. “It seemed more and more we are hearing about people who have lost children and grandchildren,” she stated.

The result is that BASIS will begin serving GSV each month with a meeting in the GSV Prayer and Meditation Room, which can be accessed through the main GSV lobby at 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Meetings, which

are open to GSV residents and members of the community, will be held on the first Tuesday of each month, with the initial meeting commencing at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Each BASIS session begins with a short devotion. The group leader offers information on a topic that relates to mourning the loss of a child. Materials are often based in Scripture. During meetings participants may take part in open discussion, ask questions, and share about their personal journey and struggles with loss. In addition, BASIS seeks to provide support for grieving parents beyond monthly meetings. The group provides information for those who wish to speak or pray on the phone and mails out informational literature from its library. In addition, the group supports parents by sending notes of encouragement on significant dates such as the birthday of a loved one and the anniversary of a loss. BASIS also provides assistance and training services to churches and schools.

Dan and his wife, Phyllis, became participants of BASIS several years ago after the loss of their son. Although Dan initially refrained from attending the meetings, he eventually joined his wife in participating in the meetings. Snyder welcomes Dan’s involvement in the

program, noting, “Dan is willing to come here, and he can speak into (the loss of a child) because he has experienced it,” said Snyder. “It’s so much more powerful if (the leader is) somebody who has been through it.” Snyder also felt it was important to open the meetings to the greater New Holland community. “I want people to have a place they feel is helpful,” she said.

For more information about BASIS, call 717-8594777 or email dsteinman@ hvmi.org.

Snyder noted that GSV offers support for

widows and widowers on a bimonthly basis. Readers who wish to learn more may email JSnyder@gar denspotvillage.org or call 717-355-6259.

Veritas Academy to present “The Hiding Place”

Veritas Academy, 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, will present an award-winning musical adaptation of Corrie Ten Boom’s “The Hiding Place.” The show, performed by students in seventh through 12th grades, will take place Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, at Leola Elementary School, 11 School Drive, Leola. Junior Meghan Spanjer of Manheim Township will portray Ten Boom. The cast will also include sophomore Greta Wenger

as Young Corrie, senior Victoria Mitchell as Betsie, and junior James Trimbath as Casper. Veritas’ theater director is Jordan Gilbert, an award-winning Broadway producer.

Aviation crew from

A Venture Crew that’s specifically focused on aviation is pretty rare. We’re the only one in the county.”

Chartered by New Holland American Legion Post 662, the Aviation Venture Crew meets every other Sunday in Smoketown Airport’s community room. The next meeting is scheduled for April 14 at 6 p.m.

“We take a wide view of aviation, including planes and flight,” said co-adviser Beth Katz. “But we also consider airport operations, weather, astronomy, navigation and trip planning. We have visited the Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport, but we have also visited Coatesville Airport and Lancaster Airport to see their operations and some of the planes housed there.”

The Aviation Venture Crew was founded in 2012

pg 1

and currently has five members, who are males and females ages 14 to 21 from Manheim, Lancaster city and Leola. More are always welcome.

“Most come from a Scouting background,” said Eadline, a New Holland resident. “We explore anything and everything related to aviation. For most of our members, it’s probably a hobby, but it could blossom into a career. If these kids are intent on going beyond Venture Crew, they can learn to fly.”

“When I started (flying), it was the excitement of being free. Now it’s a job. To me, it’s still neat to see the (planes) taking off,” said Eadline.

For additional information about Aviation Venture Crew, go to www .facebook.com/watch/ AviationVentureCrew52.

Concert to feature marches

The New Holland Band will present a concert titled “The Art of the March” on Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Once on campus, attendees may follow the directional signs to the chapel.

Many people are familiar with John Philip Sousa, also known as the march king, but other composers have also written marches for various occasions, such as the coronation of a king, or larger productions such as operas. Selections in

the upcoming concert will include Sir William Walton’s “Crown Imperial,” Julius Fucik’s “Entry of the Gladiators,” Robert Browne Hall’s “March Funebre,” and John Williams’ “Raider’s March.” Attendees will hear the stories behind various marches, including a lesser-known Sousa composition, “Mother Goose March.”

To purchase tickets and for more details, visit www .newhollandband.org. Information is also available by calling 717-355-5096 or emailing info@newholland band.org.

PennDOT seeks feedback on winter services

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking the public’s feedback on winter services through an online

survey. The survey will be available through Wednesday, April 17, at https:// tinyurl.com/2024Winter ServicesSurvey. It should

take about five minutes to complete, and all responses are anonymous.

The 16-question survey asks respondents about their timeline expectations for safe and passable roadways, how they rank snow-removal priorities, and how they rate PennDOT’s winter services.

Respondents are also asked how they receive PennDOT roadway information and

whether or how they use the state’s 511PA traveler information services. During the winter, www.511PA.com offers traffic and incident information as well as PennDOT plow-truck locations, winter roadway conditions, and other services.

As construction season begins, information on projects occurring or being bid on this year is viewable at www.projects.penndot.gov.

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.

Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
