Second Family Travel Fair Planned By Ann Mead Ash
“Annually, the U.S. Travel Association says 705 million vacation days are left unused. That is a lot,” said Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and an organizer of the second PA Family Travel Fair. “For people who live in Pennsylvania, there is so much to do within a short distance. Everyone recognizes Philly and Pittsburgh, but there is so much in the middle people aren’t aware of,” noted Royal. Following the success of the first fair in spring 2018, Royal has lined up exhibitors, along with amusements for children, food for purchase, and opportunities to win prizes, for the second free event, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In 2018, Royal noted that much of the state would be represented in some way at the fair, but this year, she promises even more. “We will have a lot of new exhibitors,” said Royal, noting that most of last year’s exhibitors will be returning. New this year, will be Sesame Place, Elk Country Visitors Center, and the Little League Museum. Celebrating 40 Years Of Faith By Ann Mead Ash
During the 40th anniversary celebration of Bible2School held on March 28 at the Eden Resort, a video interview with Hazel Nestleroth, one of the founding members of the program, was shown. “(Nestleroth) talked about the heart behind starting a program like this to reach out to students,” said Stephanie Smith, assistant director of Bible2School. In 1979, Section 1546 of the Pennsylvania School Code was amended to allow children to be released from public school for religious training of their choice. The Manheim Ministerium responded by organizing Weekday See Bible2School pg 2
Students greeted guests at the 40th anniversary celebration of Bible2School, a released time effort first founded in Manheim, which through its membership affiliation program has spread to several county locations and even out of state.
Sunrise Rotary Will Hold 16th Annual Ride For Literacy By Ann Mead Ash
For the past two years, the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary has struggled with wet weather on the days the organization held its annual Ride for Literacy. In 2017, a downpour interrupted the ride, and in 2018, the day started rainy, but cleared up later on. The lack of sun in recent years, however, has not deterred club members. “Our target is 150 riders,” said organizer Steve Bareuther. This year’s ride will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 11, beginning See Ride For Literacy pg 7
Members of the Sunrise Rotary Club are looking forward to the 16th annual Ride for Literacy, which will be held rain or shine on May 11 beginning at the Manheim Township Community Park in Neffsville.

“Membership gives a nonprofit or church an opportunity to subscribe,â€? explained Smith, who noted that the membership fee affords the organization access to an online toolbox, which includes curriculum, curriculum support, videos, training, and a connection to the central office staff. “We also set them up with their own Bible2School website ‌ which allows them to do online student registration,â€? Smith noted. Bible2School has members in a number of county school districts, including Conestoga Valley, Manheim Township, Hempfield, and Elizabethtown, which, along with SDL and Manheim Central, reach a total of more than 700 students within the county. The organization also has affiliates in western Pennsylvania and now in Delaware. Lisa Landis served as master of ceremonies for the anniversary celebration, and guest speaker Dan Kreider, a Manheim Central alumnus and member of a Pittsburgh Steelers NFL championship team, spoke about the importance of his Christian roots as he moved into playing college and professional sports. The program concluded with the testimony of Dre Woods, a Schaeffer Elementary student who attended Bible2School. When Dre was baptized a year ago, he remarked that it was at Bible2School that he came to faith in Christ, Smith explained. Dre’s father, Josh, who volunteered with Bible2School, shared the importance of being involved in a program where children from all backgrounds are coming to hear the Gospel message. Religious Education (WRE). “At that time, in the late 1970s, divorce rates were rising, and children were missing church because of dual home situations, noted Smith. “(The founders of WRE) wanted to be a support piece for those children. Smith noted that 40 years later, according to some statistics, less than 25 percent of children attend church. “The need to have a program like this hasn’t gone away, said Smith. “It has increased. WRE, now called Bible2School, provides a program that comes alongside the churches to reach the children, but the program is no longer restricted to Manheim. About a decade ago, Bible2School expanded into the School District of Lancaster (SDL), where the program was embraced and now serves grades two, three, and four in seven of 13 elementary schools. Kori Pennypacker became executive director around that time. At the banquet, Smith spoke with a second-grade teacher from SDL who talked about how the students need a program like Bible2School, and noted that he sees a difference in the behavior of the students who attend the program. Growing beyond the Manheim Central School District was a cause for celebration at the event. “We celebrated the direction of growth (of) this membership model that allows Bible2School to be picked up anywhere, said Smith, who said the program grew out of requests from parents. “Parents were saying, ‘I see the need for this. How do I get this into my community?’ That was a catalyst for us. While the Manheim office oversees Bible2School in the Manheim Central School District and SDL, a number of other school districts within and outside the county are utilizing the program through a special membership affiliation.

Auction To Support Youth Conference Attendance We Will Be Closed Good Friday, April 19th
An auction on April 26 will help to offset the cost of Grace Community Church youth group members’ attendance at Momentum Youth Conference this summer.
Grace Community Church (GCC), 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, will host its annual youth group benefit auction on Friday, April 26, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. A classic barbecue dinner with a variety of sides will be available from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Guests may pay a flat fee to fill a plate with all it can hold. Smaller plates will be available for a reduced fee. The event will offset the cost of the youth group’s trip to attend the Momentum Youth Conference that will be held at Indiana Wesleyan University in July. Student and community ministries pastor Addison Roberts said that the aim for the auction is $20,000 in order to reduce the financial burden on families that are sending students to Momentum. The goal for Momentum is to help students develop and deepen a passion and faith in God and to equip them for evangelism. The conference will have a long-term impact, Roberts asserted. “I truly believe that a growing Christian is someone who is, among other things, deeply concerned for the world around him or her,” Roberts said. “This means proactively seeking justice and, if you will forgive the cliché, being a good neighbor. Supporting a child who is
attending Momentum is an investment in the long-term health of our communities and those communities where our students will represent Lancaster County in the future. By investing in a student’s faith, you are investing in their future and the future of the community they will inhabit.” On April 26, a wide variety of items will be sold to the highest bidders. “Our auction is truly eclectic,” Roberts remarked. “It will include everything from gift cards to local experiences and restaurants to guided tours to a brand-new queen-size mattress. There is antique furniture and a new, handmade glider for your porch.” Roberts noted that among the experiences is a tour of historic Lancaster County led by GCC lead pastor Mike Sigman, along with Ron Walton. Other items include a weekend stay at a Mount Gretna cottage, artwork, Bible scene trading cards, and a silver tea service. Photos of some of the auction donations may be viewed at www.gccws.net/auction. Donations of new or gently used items are being accepted. Folks who would like to contribute to the auction or would like more information may contact Roberts at addison@gccws.net or 717-464-5333.

The Susquehanna Valley Area Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its annual induction ceremony and banquet on Saturday, May 4, at Four Seasons Banquet Facility, 949 Church St., Landisville. The event will begin with social time at 5:30 p.m., and the banquet will start at 6 p.m. During the banquet, the chapter will honor six inductees: Pete Horn, George Kennedy, Doug Givler, Stephen Beck, Barbara Barr, and Barry Stumpf. There is a per-person fee to attend the banquet. For information about tickets, readers may call Bob Herman at 717-6843407 in the evenings. The deadline for securing tickets is Friday, April 26. Horn is being nominated as a basketball coach. At P.S. Dupont High School and West Nottingham Academy, he played football, basketball, and baseball and earned eight varsity letters. He served as J.P. McCaskey High School’s athletic director from 1972 to 1998 and as the school’s head boys’ basketball coach from 1972 to 1996. Over that time, he compiled a record of 360-111, and his teams won nine Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League Section 1 titles and five L-L League championships. Horn was honored as Coach of the Year in Section 1 six times. Horn served on the School District of Lancaster’s school board from 2002 to 2010, and he returned to coaching by serving as the head boys’ basketball coach at Lancaster Country Day School for four seasons in the early 2000s. Kennedy, who is being nominated for body building, is a Columbia resident who spent 15 years as a power lifter before becoming a body builder and winning the title of Mr. Lancaster County in 1977 at the age of 32. Kennedy then entered the masters-level competitions and won Mr. Central Penn in 1987 and Mr. Pennsylvania in 1994. Additionally, he placed second at Mr. Keystone State in 1989, won the Mr. Eastern States and Mr. Eastern Seaboard competitions in 1990, and placed second in the Mr. USA competition in 1994. At the age of 50, he placed fifth in the Masters Over 50 division in the Mr. America Show. The following year, he placed second at the Mr. Keystone Classic competition. Givler is being nominated for baseball. He played four years of varsity baseball at Manheim Central High School, pitching a no-hitter and setting the mark for all-time wins. He then played a year of junior college baseball before accepting a full athletic scholarship to the University of Georgia, where he led the team in strikeouts in 1984 and in innings pitched in 1985. Givler was drafted and signed by the Seattle Mariners in 1985. He played in the minor league systems of the Mariners and the Astros before retiring due to shoulder concerns. After his professional career, Givler played nine seasons for Smitty’s Cardinals and played slow-pitch softball. He currently plays modified softball. Beck attended Hempfield High School, where he received seven varsity letters, was selected to the L-L All-League soccer team, and twice qualified for the PIAA State Swimming and Diving Championship as a diver. The club has long partnered with the Literary Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, and a portion of what is raised by the ride will be donated to that organization. The club also supports other local community organizations and helps fund international missions, such as sending eye doctors to the Dominican Republic, Nepal, and parts of Africa. The club sends area students to Rotary Youth Leadership Awards at Messiah College. Sunrise Rotary has also formed a relationship with Carter and MacRae Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster, and the club donates books to the school. Members delivered 30 books to the school in March. See Literacy pg 8

at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville. Rolling starts will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. To make the Ride for Literacy appealing to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, the event will offer four routes with names that correspond to types of literature. The 10-mile family ride is called the Short Story. The Novella will travel through 21 miles of Lancaster countryside, and the Trilogy will span 43 miles of area scenery, showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges. The Epic Metric Century ride of 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles) will be available to challenge the most adventurous riders. An optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. Cue sheets, SAG support, sports beverages, snacks, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders. A lunch will be available at the park for riders. In 2018, the Rotary Club partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to provide bikes for people and encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation. The park became a drop-off location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and riders and nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. One of the organization’s programs works to empower youths through hands-on skills they learn by repairing their own bicycles after school and in the summer. The organization also works with social service agencies to provide bikes for those in need. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. Sunrise Rotary Club president Bill Ross noted that starting this year, the club is offering a new more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals. “We have a car show in Neffsville in the fall, and we are looking for annual sponsorships to include both events,” explained Ross. The 2019 car show will be held in the Neffsville Park in September.

Lady Bucks Top CV Tracksters, 93-47 by Leah Sintic
The Lady Bucks worked their way to their second dual meet victory last week, topping the Penn Manor Comets 93-47, sweeping the relay events as well as claiming multiple individual victories. “I thought everyone did a really nice job in the meet,” praised girls head coach Nick Loreto. “We had numerous athletes step out of their normal events and try some things.” Alisan Dodd blazed her way to first place finishes in three events, claiming the high jump (5-0), 100 hurdles (17.1) and 300 hurdles (50.4). Sarah Castronova crossed the line first in the 400 meters (59.6) and teamed up with Jane Livingston, Dana Wentz, and Jordyn Hock to take the 4x100 relay in 48.7. The combination of Lauren Thrush, Kayla Mongiovi, Sage Haldeman, and Alexandra Slingluff claimed the 4x800 (11:14.6) and a foursome of Kate Kmieczak, Kylynn Frankford, Slingluff and Emily Castronova took the 4x400m in 4:26.4. Livingston clocked individual wins in both the 100 (12.0) and 200 meter (25.2) dashes, followed closely in the 200 by teammates Hock (25.3) and Wentz (26.7), with all three sprinters registering season best times in the event. “All of our sprinters had a nice meet,” summarized Loreto. Kmieczak ran the quickest 800 meter in a time of 2:35.5, and Frankford pulled ahead in the 1600, posting a 5:52.2. Other first place points poured in with contributions from Sophia Steed who cleared a 31-9.25 triple jump, Destiny Ellerbe’s 32-4 shot put, and Jessica Teleguz’ 8-0 pole vault. The boys took a collective loss 85-65, but picked up big points in both jumps and hurdles thanks to Joe Cardina’s trio of wins in high jump (6-2), triple jump (42-9), and 110 hurdles (16.0). Obed Bamungwa also led CV registering top marks in the long jump (22-1.25) and the 300 hurdles (42.1). Nate Grucelski (2:02) and Jack Emrey (2:10.6) went 1-2 in the 800 meters and were both members of the winning 4x800 relay team joined
by Caden Wenger and Kyle Thrush to clock a 9:01.4. BOYS’ LACROSSE Make that three straight league victories for Buckskin lacrosse. The boys jumped into their mid-season schedule, posting wins over Lampeter-Strasburg, Cocalico, and Garden Spot last week. There was no shortage of goals on display, and CV outscored their competitors 42-25 in the trio of triumphs. Wednesday’s 11-10 win over Lampeter-Strasburg not only flipped the script from their last clash against the Pioneers, where the Bucks fell by one goal, but also treated an enthusiastic home crowd to an exhilarating double-overtime finish. Will Stone put the exclamation point on the contest, delivering a difficult lacrosse shot known as an “around the world” into the back of the net for the golden goal. The shot count was as close as the final score with LS firing 32, compared to CV’s 31 shots on goal. Buckskin keeper, Andrew Roland, came through in a big way, snatching up nine saves in the victory.
Lead scorer Charles Braught put in four goals, followed by three from Ryan Querry, two from Stone, and one apiece from Zach Fisher and Gage McClune. “I think that both our offensive and defensive units are getting more comfortable with our systems,” acknowledged head coach Cameron Tough. “Our offense is taking more shots on average per game than last year.” In the 14-8 takedown of Cocalico last Monday, the Bucks again succeeded in that statistic, pummeling the Eagles with 37 shots on goal, and successfully finding the netting in all four periods. Scoring was a diversified effort with Stone, Braught, and Querry each notching hat tricks, Fisher and Steven Emerson tallying two apiece, and McClune adding one. Defensively, Roland was on guard with seven saves to temper the Eagles’ counter attack. Bridging the gap between offense and defense the Buckskin midfield worked the ball in transition to boost the teamwide effort. “Parker Graff is really starting to find his way on face-offs, which gives us more opportunities with the ball,” Tough credited the senior midfielder. More of the same was on display the previous weekend in a 17-7 triumph at Garden Spot. This time, CV outshot the opposition 32-19, with goals credited to nine Buckskin attackers. Braught led with
four, McClune added three, Fisher, Stone and Logan Weaver each put in two, and Querry, Emerson, Conrad Dillman and Owen Rappa chipped in one apiece. In non-league action, CV fell 8-7 in a contest against Eastern York on April 6. Braught secured five of CV’s goals with McClune and Querry each netting one. Roland had an intense day guarding the CV goal, grabbing 15 saves in the narrowly lost encounter. SOFTBALL Softball was dealt two tough blows last week, in the form of a 7-3 loss to Manheim Township, and a similar 8-3 scoreboard against Hempfield. Montana Habecker was in the circle for both contests, and though saddled with the losses, pitched an impressive two games, collecting six strikeouts against Township and three against Hempfield. “Montana pitched good enough to win both games,” encouraged head coach Larry Minney, acknowledging that errors and unearned runs proved to be costly. “We gave Manheim Township four unearned runs, but hopefully we are starting to turn things around.” Lexi Mellinger’s bat was a highlight against Township, driving in a run and going 3-4 at the plate, and Michele Lopez cranked both a double and a triple during her 2-4 day. Against Hempfield on Monday, all three of the CV runs crossed the plate
in their third at bat, giving the squad a brief 3-1 advantage, but Hempfield’s methodical response yielded runs in four separate frames and widened the gap with a four-run sixth inning. Alexcis Johns’ 2-4 showing led the CV offense. TENNIS CV tennis was already doing well this season, but last week improved their record as they swept Garden Spot and Lebanon in 7-0 wins before taking a 6-1 hit against Cedar Crest. The contests against Garden Spot
and Lebanon yielded similar results, with Owen Horst, Matthew Hoy, and Tegan Lapp claiming singles wins in both matches. Luca Puleo picked a win against Spot, and Nolan High added the fourth against Lebanon. In doubles play, it was Horst/Hoy, Puleo/Lapp, and High/Devin Gerety sweeping the Spartans, and the same duos, with the exception of Andrey Diaz pairing with Lapp, claimed all three wins against the Cedars. “We had a wonderful week last week,” celebrated head coach Dale Gregg while at the same time

win. Robbie Krasinski proved to be another offensive power firing 10 kills over the net. Tanner Shertzer’s contributions included 22 assists and a pair of blocks, and 14 digs from Caleb Engle boosted the Bucks defensive efforts. Monday night CV found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreboard against Lancaster Mennonite, but their fighting spirit prolonged the encounter into an extended fifth set, before Mennonite clinched the win (21-25, 26-24, 20-25, 30-28, 21-19). The set scores were clear evidence of the hard-fought clash, with three of the five sets reaching beyond the typical point count to determine a victory. T. Shertzer distributed 33 assists and hustled for 10 digs in covering the court, Engle fired two aces, and Carlos Barbosa added 10 digs in the loss. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The Lady Bucks split the results of their most recent league contests, notching a win over Warwick and a loss at Cocalico. The trip to Cocalico ended in a 17-4 defeat for the Buckskin squad. The Eagles went on a 13-goal scoring blitz in the first half, but the CV girls continued to battle, with goals of their own coming off the crosses of Abigail Morley (two), Allyson Andrews, and Hannah Chadwick. The previous Friday, the club posted a big league win, taking down the Warriors of Warwick 11-8. “Defensively we are playing well. The midfielders and defensive players are working together to shut down passing lanes and doubling at the appropriate times,” praised head coach Mike Chadwick. The CV offense came out hot, outscoring the Warriors 7-3 in the first half of play, and though Warwick upped their pace with five goals in the second half, Anna Kollbotn was there with six saves to hold the threat at bay. Andrews paced the CV offense with four goals and two assists, and Morley also put in four with one assist. Chadwick, Madison Buckley, and Haley Schwartz each netted a goal, while Bella Silvaggio and Taylor Zimmerman both contributed an assist. BASEBALL The CV ball club faced a tough

lineup last week, taking losses from the LL Section One’s current top two teams, Manheim Township and Hempfield who remains undefeated in league competition. Wednesday’s loss to Township was another one-run heartbreak, 43, as the Bucks started out hot, registering a three-run inning to open the contest, but Township edged ahead late in the game with both the tying and go-ahead runs crossing in the sixth. over Cedar Crest and a closely battled loss to Lancaster Mennonite last week. Tuesday evening CV hosted the Falcons and delivered a commanding 3-0 victory. The Bucks came out hot, attacking early and holding the Falcons to single digits to claim set one, 25-9. Cedar Crest regrouped for a closer battle in the remaining two sets (25-19, 25-13), but was unable to gain enough momentum to threaten the CV squad. Sawyer Shertzer’s serve gave the Falcons trouble, and he delivered a total of six aces on the way to the

The 6-1 loss to Cedar Crest was a close call, but High’s winning performance at number four singles (61,6-3), saved CV from the shutout. Reaching mid-April with an overall record of 6-4, the team seeks to keep a positive record with three matches remaining in the regular season schedule.
