At Lancaster Mennonite, district titles are part of expectations of excellence

Once is a happening. Twice is a trend. Thrice is a pattern.

But four times? Well, we’re just going to leave that one open to interpretation.

This winter, the Lancaster Mennonite boys’ basketball program captured its fourth straight District Three Class AA championship. It was the highlight of another splendid season, as well as a continuation of excellence.

“We’re fortunate to get to work with a diverse group of kids,” said Jeffrey Hartenstine, who took over as the Blazers’ head coach this season after five seasons as former head man Seth Buckwalter’s assistant.

“We are so incredibly passionate about making it special for our kids. We sacrifice time away

from our families. There is such a buy-in with this program.”

On Feb. 28 at Hershey’s Giant Center, Lancaster Mennonite defeated Halifax 53-44 in the

District Three Class AA title tilt. Following a back-and-forth first half, the Blazers outscored Halifax 33-25 in the second 16 minutes of play.

Lancaster Mennonite’s balanced scoring was paced by senior Myles Halvorsen, sophomore Cody Fisher and sophomore Bill Rothwein.

“Right from the start, we all

kind of knew what we had,” said Hartenstine. “We had lofty goals. Our biggest accomplishment was reaching those goals while getting sophomores tremendous

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

The sixth edition of the annual PA Family Travel Fair, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday,

Monsters, sword fights, royals. Enthusiastic energy and personal growth and youthful interpretation. There will be plenty going on - both on stage and behind the scenes - when a group of Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) middle-schoolers publicly explores all that theater and drama have to offer.

“It’s a story about four girls in a fairy tale setting who are going to save themselves,” said Dara Slater,

the director of “The Epic Quest of the Damsel in Distress.” “They’re not waiting for some prince to come rescue them. It’s a funny script. It’s a positive script. There are a lot of catchy one-liners.”

Students from CVSD’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School will perform their rendition of “The Epic Quest of the Damsel in Distress” on Friday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Leola Elementary School, 11 School Drive, Lancaster. Tickets can be purchased at www.show tix4u.com/event-details/83180 or at the auditorium the nights of the show.

A free showing of the play will be offered for senior citizens on Thursday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Leola Elementary School.

“What I value most are the close bonds and the lasting friendships that are developed,” said Slater. “Everyone goes through this process together. That’s probably the most important thing to me, the personal connections. It’s also important that (the students) learn to have patience and that gratification can be delayed. Sometimes we have to go back and do things again and again. But I want them to realize that it’s worth it in the end and that it can result in a performance they can be proud of.”

The staging of “The Epic Quest of the Damsel in Distress” involves 23 cast members and a 10-member stage crew. The cast stars seventh-grader Phillipa Shea as the

storyteller, sixth-grader Jessika Fisher as Izzy, eighth-grader Logan Jack as Isadora, eighth-grader Alyse Biuckians as Beatrice, seventh-grader Brooke Siegrist as Winifred and eighth-grader Ilyana Neufeld as the Masked Maven.

“This show is what happens when you let mixed-up fairy tale characters run wild across an enchanted forest with a feminist twist,” said Ilyana.

“Middle-schoolers can do amazing things,” said Slater. “When you give them an opportunity, they will surprise you with the amazing things they can come up with. They have a lot of energy, which is both a positive and a negative. They bring a lot of enthusiasm to the process.”

The middle-schoolers began their work on “The Epic Quest of the Damsel in Distress” with casting, script read-throughs and familiarization of the story lines in early February. Since then, they’ve

been spending 90 minutes to two hours nearly every day rehearsing, memorizing their lines and honing their acting skills.

“It’s a process. It’s baby steps,” said Slater. “The students have to get a feel for what their characters are all about, but a lot of this is trial and error. It’s gone well because the kids are very dedicated to the production. They’re willing to work outside of rehearsal. The kids are very dedicated to doing well, but it’s a nice challenge for them.”

experience and not alienating our older players. It all kind of worked. We battled through a myriad of injuries. But when our guys came back, they were able to join those guys who had new experience.”

Following the District Three tournament, the Blazers won two games in the PIAA Class AA playoffs before falling to District 12 champion Constitution 69-38 in the quarterfi-

nals of states. A year prior, Lancaster Mennonite had won the PIAA Class AA championship after reaching the state quarterfinals in 2021-22.

said senior Jadyn Taylor. “My favorite part about our team is how coaches and teammates feel like a family and everyone feels like they belong.”

Lancaster Mennonite concluded this season - one that was supposed to be a rebuilding year - with an overall record of 19-9.

“A big highlight this season was winning our fourth district championship, especially with a young team,”

“We had a good year when you take all of those things into consideration,” said Hartenstine. “We were coming off a very successful year, but we had great players moving on. ... When it comes to the kids, we do a lot with them out of season. I developed a bond with the guys at that time. Everything was pretty normal at the beginning of the season.”

During the regular season, the Blazers endured a pair of difficult defeats at the hands of rival Columbia. But it may have been the rigors of the non-league portion of Lancaster Mennonite’s scheduled that prepared it for the postseason.

Then the Blazers dropped a 62-55 decision to Warwick in the opening round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs.

“After the loss to Warwick, we got a tremendous amount of practice time,” said Hartenstine. “Right around that time, the seniors who were coming back (from injuries) got to practice and develop more chemistry with the younger guys. The seniors started bonding with the younger guys and we started to mesh. ... Everyone bought in, and it clicked. It just became a really good group to work around.”

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.

The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.
