First flag croquet fundraiser planned

WhenGeoff Lapp and nearly 30 others joined together on Leap Day in 2020 to found Minutemen United, a nonprofit seeking to fight poverty by supporting community service organizations, he had no idea that less than a month later COVID-19 would cause a statewide shutdown. To help fund the organization, Lapp founded Waymark Transport and began driving those in need of transportation services. In the process, Lapp met many members of the Plain community, and he was introduced to the game of flag croquet, a game that utilizes croquetstyle equipment - fortified mallets called bats - and a modified disc golf basket lowered to the bottom of the flag to create nine holes of family fun.

To help raise funds for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), a nonprofit social service organization founded in 2010 by the Conestoga Valley Ministerium, Lapp is organizing the first Flag Croquet Memorial Tournament for CVCCS.

The event will be held at Leola Community Park, 23 E. Main St., Leola, on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The per-player registration fee will include food and two rounds of flag croquet for a group of three players. Prizes will be awarded in categories that will include best score and closest to the pin. The top prize for the best score is a flag croquet set with nine baskets and flags and eight bats. “Everything will be provided (for the tournament players),” said Lapp, who will have a few flag croquet sets available for purchase at the event. The tournament, which will be capped at 54 players, is presented in partnership with the YMCA of the Roses, which oversees the park.

Minutemen United envisions a poverty-free community and has the mission of connecting people to support services. Values, based on Scripture, include gathering intentionally, living gratefully, engaging generously, and encouraging creativity. Lapp said that the organization has worked closely with a group called True Charity from Joplin, Mo. “(True Charity) has helped me find out how to be the

hands and feet of Jesus in our community,” said Lapp, who has connected CVCCS to the organization as well.

Lapp credits Groffdale Machine Company with popularizing flag croquet in Lancaster County. “They have engineered a golf game for average (people),” said Lapp. “Flag croquet is in the Amish community, and I want to bring it to the English community.” Lapp noted that the disc golf course at Leola is 18 par three holes. “At Leola Community, the holes are pretty close. So it’s not crazy long (drives),” he explained. Individuals wishing to take part in the tournament may call 717-629-2989 or email geoff@minutemen-united.com to register. Registration must be completed by Saturday, May 13.

Bowling for donations

When Josiah Casler was 6 or 7 years old, his grandfather moved to Willow Valley Communities, and the pair began bowling together on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fast forward 10 years, and Casler has been a member of the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) bowling team for two years.

As a sophomore, he takes gifted education teacher Brian Schlee’s SAGE class, which includes a passion project - an independent project in an area where the student has great interest. “SAGE is a class

in our high school that promotes critical thinking skills, creativity, and advanced topics not featured in other high school classes,” said Schlee. “The course places a lot of emphasis on student choice within assignment parameters, hence where the (name) passion project ... arises from.”

According to Schlee, one of the requirements of the project is that the student must in some way give back to the community. “I was thinking about my passions,” said Casler. “I came up with bowling and helping my community.” Seeking to combine his two interests, Casler

East Earl resident and member of the Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team Sharon Groff, is a woman who believes in giving a project her all. Groff loves the idea of Bark For Life, an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event involving dogs and their owners, so she decided to get behind the concept and do her best to make it succeed.

The result is the first Ephrata-area Bark For Life, to be held at New Life Fellowship Church, 420 E. Fulton St., Ephrata, on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s a dog-friendly event,” said Groff. “It’s

a community event.” No admission will be charged to attend Bark For Life.

Not only will dogs be welcome, but they also will have the opportunity to show off a little if they take part in the Strut Your Mutt parade scheduled to begin at 10:10 a.m. “There will be judges and prizes in different categories,” said Groff, who noted that dressing one’s dog up is encouraged but not required. Dogs who work to rescue humans will be featured in a Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue (PACSAR) demonstration at 10:30 a.m. PACSAR’s highly trained and certified volunteers provide free search

Hartman named superintendent

The Conestoga Valley Board of School Directors has announced the appointment of Daniel W. Hartman as the district’s next superintendent. Hartman is currently the assistant superintendent in the South Western School District in York County and expects to formally start in Conestoga Valley on July 1. Hartman will become the district’s seventh superintendent and will replace David Zuilkoski, who will retire at

the end of the 2022-23 school year after serving as superintendent for six years. Hartman was scheduled to be officially approved at the April 11 board meeting.

Before starting as assistant superintendent in South Western in 2016, Hartman was the district’s intermediate school principal for three years and an assistant principal for four years. He began his career in education as a middle school social studies

teacher in the Dallastown Area School District.

Hartman, whose family includes multiple educators, graduated from Elizabethtown College with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He then completed his master’s degree at Temple University in 2007 before concluding his formal education in 2013 with a doctorate in educational leadership from Immaculata University.

With half their season in the books, the CV baseball team sits at 3-7. In early April, the Buckskins sat at 3-2. Five straight losses have followed with the two most recent being to Lampeter-Strasburg and Solanco.

The Pioneers made quick work of CV on the 14th, holding the ‘Bucks hitless leading to a 7-0 final. Brendan Bossert took the loss after allowing Lampeter-Strasburg’s first four runs over six and two-third innings. Jude Thompson was hit for the final three runs.

Conestoga Valley was not able to escape with a win but after a hitless loss, the ‘Bucks’ can count the 8-3 setback to Solanco on the 17th as a

positive. Thompson took the loss after covering five of the six innings for CV with Evan Wilson taking care of the final three outs. Wilson added an RBI, pushing across Conestoga Valley’s final run in the seventh via fielders’ choice. Caden Miller accounted for the remainder of the offense with his fifth inning blast.

TENNIS

The tennis team took a rare extended weekday trip on April 14th, competing in the Altoona Invitational. The Buckskins returned home with a 5-0 loss to Dallastown coupled with a 4-1 loss to Mount Lebanon. Michael Horst picked up the lone team point on the day.

CV rebounded nicely with their return to the L-L, topping Manheim

Central by a 7-0 count on the 18th. Horst was joined by Yuji Wenger, Fabian Heine and Nolan Miller as singles winners while Horst and Wenger teamed up for a number one doubles win. Heine teamed with Boro Kristic and Miller with Eli Lefever to complete the match sweep with doubles victories.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The girl’s lacrosse team suffered losses to Ephrata, Manheim Township, Exeter and Hempfield over the last week.

Despite three goals each by Danai Ulrich, Jordyn Hironimus and Rachel Tsai, CV fell to Ephrata in overtime on the 12th, 17-16. Sophia Hess and Samantha Silvaggio added two goals apiece while Alaina Culbert, Isabelle Miller and Mikyla Rineer finished the scoring with one goal each. Jamie Handwerger finished with seven saves.

Two days later, CV battled the buzz saw known as Manheim Township with the Blue Streaks cruising to a 20-1 victory. Handwerger tallied 11 saves in the loss while Hess accounted for the lone score.

Up next was a visit from Exeter on the 17th with the Lady Eagles collecting a 16-6 win on their way out of town. Hess and Ulrich netted two scores each with Miller and Silvaggio splitting the remaining two goals. Handwerger added 10 saves to her season tally.

One day later the Lady Buckskins made the trip to Hempfield and returned with a 21-2 setback in tow. This time it was Ulrich and Culbert doing the scoring with Handwerger finishing with eight saves.

VOLLEYBALL

A win over Manheim Township was followed by a loss to Cedar Crest over the last week, leaving Conestoga Valley 5-3 overall.

CV used 14 kills and eight digs

from Carson Hoover as well as 31 assists from Drew Hultstrand to take out Township by a 3-0 final. Two aces and one block from Garret Funck also helped secure the 25-19, 25-19 and 25-20 win.

Conestoga Valley started strong against Cedar Crest on the 18th, taking game one 25-21 but the Falcons regrouped to hand CV three straight losses, 17-25, 19-25 and 14-25. Hultstrand tallied 34 assists and Hoover 18 kills. Rowan Aisenbrey added 17 digs and two aces while Jemiah Burkholder finished with three blocks.

SOFTBALL

The softball team saw their twogame blip turn into a quick four game slide with losses to LampeterStrasburg and Solanco adding to Elizabethtown and Solanco losses.

Rhiannon Henry was hit with both losses, covering six innings in the 8-3 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on the 14th and eight and one-third innings in the 7-3, extra inning, setback to Solanco on the 17th. She totaled 13 strikeouts and 10 walks over the two games with six CV errors leading to five of the 15 runs counting as unearned.

Izzy Rodriguez and Alexa Freeburn each enjoyed two hits opposite L-S. Rodriguez used a second inning double for her lone RBI while Freeburn did the same with a fourth inning single. CV plated their third and final run on a passed ball.

Against the Golden Mares, the Lady Buckskins plated two of their three runs off a Solanco error in the third with Brylee Bateson capping the rally with a sacrifice bunt for the team’s lone RBI.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The boys’ lacrosse team had their three-game winning streak snapped courtesy of a 15-3 loss to Hempfield on the 18th. Soren Stoltzfus finished with 16 saves in the loss while Jeff

Fisher, Tyson Zwaska and Hunter Silvaggio split the three scores.

The winning streak reached three games on the 12th when CV topped Ephrata 13-9. Eleven Stoltzfus saves were enough thanks to five Fisher goals as well as four from Isaiah Sensenig. Noah Nolt added two scores with Zwaska and Silvaggio picking up one each.

TRACK

The track team posted their second straight double win with the boy’s topping Cocalico 107-44 while the Lady Bucks posted a 107.3-42.7 win on April 17th.

Ish Camacho picked up the final field win, clearing 10-6 in the pole vault. Hoffner added a 200m win with Micah Kao (800m) and Timothy Gitonga (3200m) rounding out the winners.

The Lady Buckskins posted wins in all three relays for a quick 15 team points. Asha Marwaha, Abigail Zook, Kylee Antrim and Seana Dougherty claimed the 3200 relay,

Halie Schnapf, Brooke Denlinger, Mae Linder and Alondra Ortiz took care of the 400m relay while Bellemarie Alston, Denlinger, Felicia Pius and Ortiz captured the 1600m relay.

The remaining six track wins were split between Denlinger (100H and 300H), Alston (800m and 1600m) and Ortiz (100m and 200m) while five different athletes captured field wins. Pius was the lone field winner to have success on the track adding the shotput title to her relay leg. Erica Forrey claimed the javelin as the only other victor in the throws. At 11 a.m., the fun for pups will continue with doggie games, including musical sit, which will involve hula hoops. “We stop the music and the dog without a hula hoop is out, and then we will take a hula hoop away,” explained Groff. “We may do that a couple times depending on how many dogs register.” At 11:30 a.m., Your Inner Dog, which specializes in holistic dog behavior and wellness, will give a demo, and at noon Officer Bill Watt and Tundra of the East Hempfield Township Police K9 Unit will give a demonstration.

Groff has also lined up community servants and apparatus to interest area residents of all ages. “The

Ephrata Pioneer Fire Company will be on hand,” she noted. “The Ephrata Ambulance will hand out coloring books to kids, and there will be a police cruiser here. We are making it a complete community event.”

To raise funds for Relay For Life, a live auction featuring James “Max” Fishel as auctioneer, will be held at 1 p.m. Among the many donated items will be 100 themed baskets and gift certificates to local attractions. “Two of the biggest items are two Hall of Fame Philadelphia Phillies tickets and a ridealong stock car experience at Pocono Raceway,” said Groff.

created a bowling fundraiser aimed at raising money for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS). “They work right in our community,” said Casler, who noted that CVCCS offers food and clothing banks, along with mentorship and after-school programs.

Casler called his fundraiser “Help our CV Neighbors - Josiah’s Bowling Fundraiser,” and he set a date of March 10 to bowl three games at Dutch Lanes near Brownstown. “We set up a Google form that allowed donors to donate a certain amount of money per strike or spare or just insert a set amount,” said Casler.

At 4:30 p.m. on March 10, a few of Casler’s fellow bowling team members and friends and family members gathered with him at the bowling alley. “It was livestreamed on Facebook, so that donors could watch it live,” said Casler. When the time came to hit the alley, Casler’s bowling skills paid off. “It went really well,” he noted. “I threw 36 frames over three games, and I struck 27 times and got five spares.” Casler informed sponsors

of the results of the games and offered three ways for them to satisfy pledges.

Donors could donate by mailing a check to his family, using an online payment method, or giving directly to CVCCS. Casler’s actions resulted in $3,441 in pledges, of which more than $2,700 has been received by CVCCS.

Schlee was pleased with the results of Casler’s project. “I was pleasantly surprised when he raised almost $4,000 for CVCCS,” he said.

“It is always great to see the students really take ownership of a project like Josiah did.”

Jon Barrett, executive director of CVCCS, was happy to receive the funds for the work of the organization. “I was so impressed by Josiah’s spirit,” recalled Barrett. “He told me his goal was to raise $300 total at the beginning, but donation pledges kept coming in, and he realized this was getting bigger than he ever imagined.”

“We had a spreadsheet where we estimated how much I would get, but we exceeded that because I bowled very well,” noted Casler, who has since talked to his friend Evan Zim-

merman about expanding the fundraiser. “We were thinking next year of trying to get the entire bowling team (to take part), and the year after that, the whole league,” said Casler. “We would like to keep on building from this platform.”
