Seventh Annual Hope For Haiti Benefit Auction Set By Ann Mead Ash

According to Kristen Hertzog, organizer of the seventh annual Hope for Haiti benefit auction, this year’s event will feature something for everyone, including some of the smallest attendees. “We plan on children’s barrel train rides and pony rides this year,” said Hertzog. “The pony rides are new.” This year’s auction, which began when a group of neighbors decided to help fund schools in Haiti, will be held at the Hertzog Homestead, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata, on Saturday, May 18, beginning at 9 a.m. Among the many pieces of merchandise that will go up for bids will be storage sheds, handmade quilts in a variety of sizes, lawn and garden supplies, antiques, collectibles, and furniture. Since the fundraiser is a bring-something-buy-something event, auction

visitors are welcome to bring gently used and new items to sell as well as bid on something to take home. Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, homemade doughnuts, and baked goods, including strawberry pies. Last year, funnel-cake fries were added to the menu. This year’s feature item will be pulled pork sandwiches. Funds raised at the 2019 event will benefit two organizations that help provide education and business training for Haitian small business owners. Paradigm Shift is the education division of Haiti Transformation, which teaches leadership skills and is led by Nelson and Sue Martin. Hope Library is located in Montrouis, Haiti, a town with a population of about 18,000. The library offers books in French, Creole and English and education programs in the See Hope For Haiti pg 3

All Invited To Dream BIG! After Cristin Germaine held the third Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2018, she felt a change was in order. “By the end of 2018, I was talking with trusted friends about where to go with Dare to Dream,” recalled Germaine, who felt the Lord pushing her to expand the audience for the next event. “This will be a brand-new venture,” said Germaine of the free re-envisioned event that will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will be called “Dream BIG!: Ignite Your Passion,” and it will be open to men and teenagers age 15 and up in addition to women. The event will See Dream BIG! pg 7

In September 2018, Cristin Germaine recorded the theme song for the first Dream BIG! event, which will be held at Calvary Church on June 22. A launch party for the song will be held on May 13. Dream BIG! will include workshops and more to encourage men, women, and teenagers age 15 and up wishing to pursue a dream.

The program involves introducing students to multiple success pathways by exposing them to career options and work-based learning experiences and by linking academic achievement with college and career readiness standards. In addition, the school offers two Advanced Placement (AP) courses: English Literature and Composition and U.S. History. The school also recently received donations of pizza from local pizza restaurants. The food was delivered to La Academia Esports Club members while they participated in five weekly evening competitions. The food helped to provide nourishment to the competitors. Esports is competitive, organized video gaming, in which participants from different teams face off in the same games that are played by at-home gamers. La Academia is a public charter school.

Through the Spanish American Civic Association, La Academia Partnership Charter School recently received an Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) donation of $2,500 from BB&T. The funds will support the school’s Early College/Dual Enrollment Program, which provides access to postsecondary education experiences for La Academia students. Many students have enrolled and selected courses from local higher education institutions, including HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. The recently donated funds will support college tuition, materials, books, transportation, and technology fees. The Career Readiness Program at La Academia is intended to help students achieve their goals by equipping them with the skills they need for employment.

As an example of what can happen when one dares to dream, Germaine shared some of the events that have occurred in her life in the last year. “I was getting my story out and sharing about Dare to Dream,” said Germaine. “God put it in my heart to do a song.” A friend directed her to Eric Copeland, who is president of a music label, and together they wrote a song called “Dream BIG!” that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine coproduced with Copeland. A launch party will be held for the song on Monday, May 13, beginning at

An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping people move forward. “One couple (will hold a) workshop on embracing brokenness,” noted Germaine. “(That’s about breaking) free (from) our past to dream again.” The 2019 workshops will include “The Path That Brings Me Back to You - Visioning With God,” presented by Steve and Colleen Adams; “Become Aware of Your Presence,” presented by Dan Armstrong; “Wake Up, Get Up, and Go!” presented by Julia Banks; “Created for Greatness,” presented by the Dash Girls; “Rewind. Runners and walkers are invited to participate in a 5K on Saturday, May 11, at Friendship Community as part of the annual Friendship Fest celebration.

Boy Scout Troop 48 recently recognized Scouts for advancement. The honorees and their new ranks are as follows: Zack Eno (front), Scout; (back, from left) Josh Haddon, Star; Dylan Rosso, Second Class; Jack Sullivan, Star; and Ray Haddon III, Life. More information about Scouting is available by contacting Scoutmaster Charles Ulrich at 717-371-5284 or ulrich@outlook.com.

Laurel Spagnolo, director of advancement with Friendship, added that organizers enjoy seeing residents from nearby Landis Homes visiting the fest. Friendship Community, a ministry that helps individuals with developmental disabilities to impact the world with their capabilities, will hold its 2019 Fest, Auction, and 5K, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 7 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The day will open with a cafeteria-style pancake and sausage breakfast and a plant sale. Two years ago, the organization added a 5K run/walk to the annual event. Registration for this year’s 5K is now open at www.friendshipcommunity.net, or individuals may pick up brochures at the Friendship office. Registration will be discounted through Friday, May 10, and registration will open at 7 a.m. on the day of the run, with the run beginning at 8 a.m. Registrants will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt while supplies are available. Horning noted that those who sign up for the 5K will have the opportunity to set up their own web page and to request sponsorships from friends and family members if they wish. Runners will be entitled to a free breakfast at the fest. The general auction will begin at 9 a.m. Spagnolo noted that a variety of items are being collected for the auction. She said that purses, household items, quilts, gift certificates, gift baskets, and tickets to local attractions and sports competitions are among the many items organizers plan to have available for bidders. The Friendship Heart Gallery will have a tent filled with artwork available for purchase. The gallery showcases work through

which individuals with intellectual disabilities express themselves artistically. Friendship’s Meaningful Day Academy program, which offers Friendship clients an opportunity to contribute to the community, will also have a tent at the fest. Both tents will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities for children, which will include a bounce house and face painting by Rebekah Violante of Joyful Canvas, will begin at 10 a.m. A petting zoo and the magic of Papa Tater will both be on-site. A food court will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature chicken barbecue meals including a half-chicken, a roll, chips, applesauce, and a beverage. Other food items will include chicken corn soup, hot dogs, french fries, and ice cream. As part of the fest, Friendship began offering a fund-a-need program a few years ago. This year, the fund-a-need roster includes concrete walkway repairs, washing machines, flooring, electrical work, shed repair, office chairs, laptop computers, and refrigerators. One need that Spagnolo called attention to was funds to provide summer camping experiences at area camps for Friendship clients. Individuals may donate to the fund at the Friendship website. Donations of items for the auction are still being accepted, and volunteers are always needed. Volunteers may sign up through a link on the website. Through its many group homes and intermediate care facilities, as well as home-based services and programs, Friendship provides services to more than 230 area individuals. Organizers hope this year’s fest will raise $75,000 for the cause. Readers with questions may call 717-656-2466.

The 30th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 12, at Burle Business Park, 1000 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. The Convoy Carnival will take place on the Burle Business Park property from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the trucks will leave promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Convoy will end at about 4:30 p.m. This year’s goal is to raise $550,000 for Make-A-Wish. Organizers expect to host approximately 600 drivers with trucks and trailers at the Truck Convoy, as well as an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 community members at the Convoy Carnival. The Convoy itself is a 26mile scenic route through Amish Country, where 25,000 members of the community line the route to cheer on the drivers and the 125 Wish recipients who ride with them. This year, the final vehicle will be the Wish Family Bus, transporting family members of Wish recipients who are deceased. The first truck will tow the Wish Angel Trailer, which features stars emblazoned with names of Wish children who are deceased. A Working Truck Beauty Contest is being held online, and the winners of each of the four categories will be featured at the Convoy. To vote, readers may visit https://1.shortstack.com/nJPNlD. The Convoy Carnival, open to children and adults of all ages, will feature a wide array of local food, games, dozens of costumed characters, live music and a live auction. An on-stage presentation will take place at noon. Parking will be located in the residential area across from Burle Business Park, and a free bus service will shuttle guests from Lancaster Catholic High School and Grandview Shopping Plaza throughout the day. The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began in 1990 when a child, Matt, was granted his wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister via CB radio. On the day of Matt’s Wish,

2007 to 2008 he was assigned to Operation Iraqi Freedom Balad Iraq. In 2018, he served in Operation Spartan Shield Kuwait. Buckskin Baseball Battles Ephrata, Warwick by Leah Sintic

After a brief Easter break, the Buckskin baseball club took to the diamond last week for two league contests on the road and were sent home with two narrow losses. On Wednesday, the team traveled to Ephrata and were unable to recover from a second inning surge in which

the Mountaineers went up 3-0, going on to claim the contest 4-1. Nathan Scheid had a nice day at the plate for the Bucks with three quality at bats leading to two hits and an RBI. Keegan Martin picked up the third CV hit. Martin was on the hill for the Bucks completing four and two thirds innings and collecting three

strikeouts. Gavin Fisher came out of the bullpen to close the contest, striking out one. Monday, the Bucks went head-tohead with the Warwick, and despite registering a run in their first at bat, the Bucks came up short, 3-1. CV wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when number three batter, Jayden Taitano, singled a line drive into center field during his first at bat, driving in Gavin Horning who had reached on an error. Unfortunately, the Warriors plated two runs in the bottom of the second to overtake them, holding a slim lead through the remainder of the contest. The Warriors managed to slip a third run across in the bottom of the sixth to claim the contest. Jarrett Imler threw six innings for CV, striking out four and walking one. “Jarret threw a great game, and the defense as a whole kept us in that game,” credited head coach Jeff Craig. In addition to Taitano’s opening hit, Scheid, Martin, and Imler each supplied a hit to the Buckskin effort. “The boys’ morale was very high, which says a great deal about their

character,” pointed out Craig. The ups and downs of an athletic season give ample opportunity to build that character, and the Bucks approach their end of season schedule with determination to finish strong. “The boys continue to battle,” praised Craig, emphasizing the importance of senior guidance and continued teamwide effort. “From a leadership perspective, Nate Scheid and Nolan Rishell are doing a great job.” VOLLEYBALL Buckskin volleyball took two hits last week, falling to Hempfield in league competition after a nonleague loss to Palmyra. Thursday night’s clash went 3-0 in favor of Hempfield, but the Bucks showed a fighting spirit in a closely contested second set (25-15, 26-24, 25-11). The squad headed into the match emphasizing serving and good communication, and the middle set was the best display of the young squad’s talent. Robbie Krasinski, Caleb Engle and Carlos Barbosa each fired over an ace, and Tanner Shertzer had

a big night with 12 digs, 17 assists, and two blocks. Early in the week, the Bucks headed to Palmyra and took a 3-1 loss after battling for four sets (29-27, 25-20, 20-25, 25-13). The first set extended to extra points, and tipped in favor of Palmyra giving them the edge for the remainder of the contest. “We came out strong in the first set and had a handful of opportunities for game point, but missed serves and play execution was our downfall,” explained head coach Blake Youndt. Similar errors plagued the Bucks in set two, but the team fired back to take the third. “We kept our serves in and started to put pressure on them. It was more of a team effort and mentality that

earned us that set,” described Youndt expecting to see more of that in the final weeks of the season. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Girls lacrosse faced a tumultuous lineup in recent days, as three league contests packed with action led them to one victory and two losses. On Thursday the team fell hard to an aggressive Manheim Township, 19-1. Lauryn Hall’s second half goal was assisted by Allyson Andrews and saved CV from the shutout. “Township is well coached and the epitome of a team unit,” credited head coach Mike Chadwick. Tuesday, the club took a trip to Cedar Crest and the contest was knotted at 6-6 at the half, but late in the game the Falcons edged ahead to a final score of 14-10.

Buckskins Jeremiah Pha (7) and Jayden Rice team up to block a Cougar shot during a nonleague match at Palmyra last Monday.

“Cedar Crest played a very good game, and at the end of the day there were factors out of our control that hindered our ability to play our game,” described Chadwick. Leading scorer, sophomore Abigail Morley tucked in five goals against Cedar Crest, bringing her current season total to 51; surpassing the 50-goal benchmark with plenty of lacrosse yet to come this year. Morley’s offensive successes make her part of an elite group of attackers, joining teammates Hannah Chadwick and Andrews, each holding over 100 career points (goals and assists). Andrews secured a hat trick against the Falcons, while H. Chadwick and Taylor Zimmerman each added one. Just before the holiday weekend, the Bucks claimed a decisive victory over Elizabethtown,13-8, and a slew of six attackers were responsible for the goal count. Morley put in five, H. Chadwick added a hat trick, Andrews supplied two goals and three assists, and Bella Silvaggio, Madison Buckley, and Zimmerman each netted one. “We played a balanced game, our strength was the transition game which set up high percentage shots,” described Chadwick. Anchoring the defense was keeper Anna Kollbotn who accumulated 25 saves over the three contests. An overall record of 6-7 and league

record of 4-6 make each remaining contest of the season pivotal to the post season. Looking ahead and implementing teamwork concepts beyond the field, the team is excited to participate in their Team Owen fundraiser, an annual event raising funds and awareness for those affected by cystic fibrosis. This year’s event is slated for May 3, and the squad combines efforts from t-shirt sales as well as donations, in hopes of meeting or exceeding last year’s efforts which raised over $600 for the cause. TRACK The Lady Bucks track crew picked up their most recent team victory at Cedar Crest last Tuesday with an 82-68 triumph over the Falcons, bringing them to a 3-1 record in league duals this season. Jane Livingston continued setting records last week, this time breaking CV’s school record in the 200 meter with a 24.8, shaving two tenths off of the previously held record of 25.0 set by Lauren Mable. Completing a CV sweep of the dash events, Jordyn Hock won the 100 meter in 12.4, and Sarah Castronova clinched the 400 in 58.6. Freshman Kylynn Frankford clocked the fastest 1600 with a time of 5:46.5, Alisan Dodd claimed the 300 hurdles (48.9), and Livingston crossed first in the 100 hurdles (13.9). More CV points poured in when Aviona Saunders dominated the

jumping events with a pair of first places finishes, a 15-0 long jump, and a 34-6 triple jump. Jess Teleguz topped the pole vault at 9-3, a personal best that ranks her fifth in the league, and Destiny Ellerbe won the shot put (34-2.5). The CV boys lost their meet, 96-54, but still presented several individual highlights, including a Buckskin sweep in the jumping events. Joe Cardina claimed both the triple (39-10) and high jump (5-10), while Obed Bamungwa secured first place in the long jump with a 20-6. Nate Grucelski glided to an 800 meter win of 1:55.6, and teamed up with Cardina, Loago Snavely, and Bamungwa to take first in the 1600 meter relay. Snavely and Bamungwa also went 1-2 in the 300 hurdles with times of 40.3 and 42.4 respectively. SOFTBALL After getting blanked by Warwick early last week, the CV softball crew bounced back to take down Ephrata, 11-3, on Wednesday. Lexi Weitzel started in the circle for the Lady Bucks and earned the win striking out one and walking one. Montana Habecker pitched three innings in relief, picking up an additional four strikeouts and one walked batter. CV bats were hot, racking up 13 hits and crossing runs in four of their seven at bats. Ephrata’s bats also gained momentum, collecting nine hits,

but united Buckskin defensive efforts minimized the damage, allowing only three runs. Against Warwick, the squad had trouble stringing together offensive momentum, leading to the 6-0 shutout. The Warriors methodically gathered runs, finishing with a two-run seventh inning. Lexi Mellinger, Jacquelyn McBride, Weitzel, and Habecker each registered a hit in the loss, but strong Warrior defense held them scoreless. Habecker threw a complete game for CV striking out an impressive six batters, while walking four, and allowing six runs on seven hits. BOYS’ LACROSSE After a few days break, the CV boys made the most of their home contest against Cocalico, treating their fans to a 17-6 triumph. Seven different attackers combined for the goal count led by Ryan Querry’s four, Charles Braught (3g, 5a), Gage McClune (3g 1a), two apiece from Logan Weaver, Steven Emerson, and Will Stone, and one from Zach Fisher. Keeper duties were shared by Andrew Roland and CJ Ballard with

seven and two saves respectively. TENNIS A narrow 3-2 loss to Altoona concluded the regular season schedule for the Buckskin tennis squad, bringing their overall record to 6-7 and splitting their league showings evenly at 3-3. Matthew Hoy brought in one of CV’s points against Altoona with a 6-4, 6-4 win at number two singles. Conestoga’s second point came in doubles when Tegan Lapp and Luke Taylor joined forces to defeat their opponents in a three-set showdown (6-4, 2-6, 7-5). Signifying the end of the regular season and highlighting the prospects of upcoming athletes, CV hosted the annual Futures Invitational last Monday. “It gives a chance for our younger players to gain some varsity level experience for the upcoming season,” explained head coach Dale Gregg. “It gives almost everyone a chance for a tournament level day.” Devin Gerety celebrated an individual

win at the event, claiming the number three singles category with a final round triumph, 8-5, over Donegal’s Kyle Bitting. Nolan High, a sophomore, competed in the number one singles slot, advancing to the final round by defeating Aaron Rugh of Donegal 8-6 before falling to Landon Rychener of Lancaster Mennonite. Steven Diaz also made an appearance in a finals match after taking down his opponent, Sam Bailey of ELCO (8-3), before slipping behind Tanner Bowers of Donegal, 8-5. In a round robin style exhibition event, Harrison Stein, a freshman, picked up victories over two Donegal opponents; topping Jaden Zellers (8-1) and Ricky Fits (8-6). Fellow freshmen, Jason Schlegelmilch and Grady Ray, combined for an 8-1 triumph over Cody Sky and Michael Shade of ELCO, to make it to their final round where Donegal’s Noah Hoffmaster and Austin Bailey came out on top in an 8-5 battle.
