Coordinating A Timely Scout Project By Ann Mead Ash

When Lauren Nedrow became one of the first members of Scouts BSA Troop 82 in Brownstown in December 2018, she, along with her sister, Lyndsey, and seven other young women, became eligible for an Eagle Scout extension, which gave them until February 2021 to complete requirements for an Eagle Scout Award if they so desired. Now in her first year of studying neuroscience pre-medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, Lauren returned home in mid-March due to COVID-19 restrictions and has been continuing school online. Before returning home, Lauren had been looking for an Eagle

Scout project in the health care field. Once at home, she saw reports on the nightly news about the need for face masks. Lauren contacted friends in the health care field, who connected her with Southeastern Home Health Services, which has an office in Elizabethtown. Southeastern provides in-home health care services to the elderly. She chose the organization as her project beneficiary and arranged to donate face masks for employees to use. On March 26, Lauren submitted her project proposal to the BSA Pennsylvania Dutch Council for approval. The project was approved by March 30, and Lauren went to work contacting friends who might be able to help make masks.

Tests, treatments, and cures for the novel coronavirus are advertised online and even by text or phone call, but those products may only leave buyers with less money and no good outcomes. “Fraudsters prey on public fears during times like these,” said Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service and public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). She added that scammers often target seniors, and worry about contracting COVID-19 may cause people to make decisions they would not make in other circumstances. See Preventing Scams pg 2

Deadline Extended For Pet-Related Art Contest Submissions Sought For Online Gallery By Dayna M. Reidenouer CON

In January, Mulberry Art Studios founder April Koppenhaver announced that she was accepting entries in the second annual Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition. April 1 was set as the deadline for entries, and the opening reception was scheduled for Friday, May 1. For obvious reasons, the timeline has changed. “All the World,” a chalk art creation by Ethan Cole, 8, is the first youth contribution to Mulberry Art Studios’ new community collective online gallery space. All adults and children are invited to contribute artwork that expresses what they have been experiencing. People may also submit artwork in the Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest until June 1.

Brownstown Elementary Student Is Miss Twirlmania By Ann Mead Ash

Julia Rhoads, a 9-year-old, fourth-grade student at Brownstown Elementary School, has been twirling a baton since she was 18 months old. Working with her mother, Wendy Rhoads, owner of Ab-Salute Twirling, and her coach Lisa Hoffmaster, Julia began competing at a young age, being named Miss Majorette of Pennsylvania at a competition held in the greater Pittsburgh area in May 2018. Over Presidents Day weekend - Feb. 13 through 16 - Julia and her family traveled to Disney World in Orlando for the annual Miss Twirlmania competition. There, she competed against more than 10 other girls in the 7 to 9 age group for the title of Miss Twirlmania, which Julia won at the end of the competition. Lisa’s daughter, Kinley, who is a student in the Donegal School District, won first place in the 0 to 6 age group. In the competition, Julia competed in six events: show twirl, solo routine, strut, modeling, basic, and two-baton. The show twirl performance is a routine done to music chosen by the twirler See Miss Twirlmania pg 7

Osborne noted that recent scams that have surfaced involve the economic stimulus, claims about products marketed as coronavirus treatments, or the promise of services related to the virus in an attempt to distract someone in order to commit theft or another property crime. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has published a long list of frauds that have sprung up around COVID-19 and good strategies for avoiding them at www.justice.gov/coronavirus/co mbattingfraud. “Families can help (loved ones) see that the scammers are there en force and that coronavirus is now a new trigger to alarm potential scam targets,” Osborne said. “Warn them to get any information about ‘medical breakthroughs’ from either the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Daily updates get posted with truthful information on these sites.” Osborne offered four tips that can be useful in protecting an individual from a scam. -Never accept an online offer for a coronavirus vaccine. “We don’t have one, and if we did, our own doctors would offer it,” Osborne said. •Never click on any link from an unfamiliar source, as that is the primary way that scammers are able to install malware or viruses on a computer. The DOJ also recently announced that malicious sites have been masquerading as public health organizations, such as the American Red Cross, or have tried to trick people into providing bank account details, so even links from trusted email senders should be verified before clicking. •Do not buy masks, medicines, sprays, or other products purporting to protect against the coronavirus. The CDC has said

that cloth masks may be helpful in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and handmade masks are acceptable for compliance with Pennsylvania’s shutdown regulation that masks must be worn in public and in the workplace. However, Product Safety and Consulting Services owner Misty Henry stressed that cloth masks have not been tested according to FDA or National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards to prove prevention or mitigation of virus transmission. •Do not accept any offers that require investment in any security that purports to provide a breakthrough treatment, cure, or vaccine against the coronavirus. “The best families can do is keep our aging loved ones informed by alerting them to what is a present danger,” Osborne advised. If someone believes they or a loved one is a victim of a scam, they should contact their local police department or the PSP, if they live in an area covered by the state police, using the respective agency’s nonemergency number. The PSP nonemergency number is 717-299-7650, and Lancaster County Radio may be reached at 717-664-1180. The latter will route phone calls to the appropriate police department. Osborne stressed that 911 should be called only in the case of an emergency.

In March, the Office of Commonwealth Libraries directed Pennsylvania public libraries to remain closed until further notice is given. All book drops are closed, and no library materials will be due during the closure. During this time, no late fines will be assessed for overdue items. Any books and other materials, such as CDs and DVDs, that were due on March 13 or later have been renewed and will continue to renew

automatically until the libraries reopen. There will be a grace period to return items when the library reopens. Although the buildings are closed, Lancaster Public Library is open online, and staff are working remotely to connect people with information, ideas, and enriching experiences. For example, the reference staff is answering questions as they come via email to askus@ lancasterpubliclibrary.org.

Stephanie Cole noted that the show has been moved from May to July. Digital images of artwork will be accepted until Monday, June 1. Opening receptions are set for 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 3, and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 4, at the gallery, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Application to the show is free, but a cost has been set to participate in the show. The participation fee will be waived for one piece for each artist who is a high school student or younger. Students who want to enter more than one piece may do so at a reduced rate as compared to the adult fee schedule. The artwork may be sold through the exhibition, and Mulberry Art Studios will take a commission. The proceeds will be donated to The Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Last year’s show raised $1,000 for the organization. A best-in-show award and a people’s choice award will be

their own homes - to express themselves with art. All pieces will be collected and shared in an album on Mulberry Art Studios’ Facebook page, as well as shared on its Stories and its Instagram page. “The online gallery allows you to share children’s creations, your art and creative projects, photos of life now, unique decorations, and signs of gratitude … even inspiring signs of spring,” Cole explained. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. For your family. For your neighbors. For our entire community.

Old Philadelphia Pike Survey Announced The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC), together with East Lampeter, Leacock, and Salisbury townships, encourages people who live, work, and play along the Old Philadelphia Pike (State Route 340) to take a new survey focused on the corridor’s future. The survey is available at https://places2040.com/ online-surveys through Friday, July 31. This survey is part of an effort by LCPC and the three townships to implement the place-based approach to planning emphasized in “places2040,” the Lancaster County comprehensive plan. One aspect of that work highlights communities, corridors, and landscapes that extend beyond municipal boundaries. The plan identifies Old

Philadelphia Pike as a priority corridor due to its unique mix of rural, village, and suburban landscapes and its role as a tourism destination. Survey respondents are asked to identify some of the top issues they see in this area, such as housing, road safety, and the future of farming, and compare strategies to address these issues. County and municipal partners will use this feedback to assist in creating a strategic plan for the corridor. To ensure broad participation in the survey, LCPC encourages public, private, and nonprofit partners in the community to promote it on their websites and social media. When the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, a paper version of the survey will also be distributed to municipal offices and other locations throughout the corridor.

At that time, Lauren was still figuring out the pace toward her goal of 500, based on what volunteers produced and what she was able to sew. By April 13, the group had completed 200 masks. To be part of the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts, Lauren will need to have her project complete and all her paperwork done by October. “Even though I have until February 2021 to complete the program, any girls in the program that complete it by October of 2020 will be part of (that class),” she said. “That’s the goal.” BSA has decided to hold off boards of review for the girls until October so that no one person will be designated the first female Eagle Scout. EMU Athletes Earn Academic Awards For the 14th straight year, the Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) field hockey team earned the National Academic Team award from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Additionally, nine of the women on the team claimed a spot on the National Academic Squad. The Academic Team award recognizes the team grade point average (GPA) from the fall semester of the 2019-20 academic year, recognizing programs with a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. EMU’s streak of 14 consecutive years of earning the team award started from the 2006 season. The Academic Squad award is for individuals who hold a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher through the fall semester. Rachel Breslin of Lititz, Lauren Hartzler of Manheim, and Madeline Mast of Lancaster are among the Royals who were honored. A total of 1,943 student-athletes from the 157 Division III institutions were recognized this year. Mast, EMU’s lone senior, earned special recognition as a four-year honoree on the National Academic Squad. The Royals finished with a record of 5-13, and sophomore defender Brandy Troutman of Mountville tied for the national lead with a program record 17 defensive saves. and based on a theme. Julia’s theme was “Magic,” and she performed to the song “Illusion” by Ross Lynch. For show twirl, Julia competed in the 9 to 12 age group. The strut competition involves staying within the confines of a letter X placed on the floor and never releasing the baton. “Strut is more of a dance with baton movement,” explained Wendy. In modeling, the baton is not used, but posture and presentation are judged. The basic event involves marching and maneuvering within a square, and two-baton is performed with two batons and gives the twirler a chance to throw and catch the batons. According to Wendy, most routines for Julia’s age group last two minutes and 30 seconds. Julia won or placed in several events. She won the two-baton event, and she placed second in show twirl and basic. For the Miss Twirlmania title, she won
