LLHFH is seeking to open new doors to homeownership

One of humans’ four basic needs for survival, shelter is more than a means of keeping rain off our backs, wind off our necks and sun out of our eyes. Houses become homes because they provide stability, they foster growth, they allow us to lead better lives.

Born out of necessity, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity (LLHFH) has been providing housing for Lancaster County residents for 38 years. Now the affordable housing organization is introducing a new program intended to expand its footprint

in the county and beyond.

“Homeownership is a game changer for families,” said Amy

“A safe, dry, warm and affordable home offers a family a new chapter in life and the opportunity to build a brighter future.”

Balestier, LLHFH’s vice president of development and communications. “When they can build wealth, (homeowners) can build

their own brighter futures. When you’re living paycheck to paycheck, that isn’t possible. What we have found is that when people own their homes, their children are more likely to go on to college or own their own homes. In essence, we’re helping to fund the future. It doesn’t stop with one Habitat home. There are a lot of success stories.”

LLHFH has launched an ambitious $4 million campaign called Open Doors, which is designed to address the ongoing shortage of affordable housing.

LLHFH has already raised the first $3.2 million toward its goal and is seeking to garner the rest

Move will enhance EMU at Lancaster’s educational footprint

Geographically, it’s a 9-mile northwest move. Developmentally, it’s a move in a different direction.

Eastern Mennonite University at Lancaster (EMU at Lancaster) is on the move. In two months,

the private liberal arts university based in Harrisonburg, Va., will officially relocate its Lancaster campus from East Lampeter Township to Warwick Township.

“It will provide more modern space for our students,” said Christine Sharp, EMU at Lancaster’s executive director.

At North Market, Samaritan Center welcomes the community

New isn’t necessarily improved; bigger isn’t necessarily better. But when the topic is mental health services, more is almost always desirable.

Samaritan Center is expanding its counseling services. It’s a move intended to provide more hope for a healthier, happier and better-adjusted community.

“We know that counseling works, that it improves lives,”

said Steve Schedler, executive director of Samaritan Center.

“For many, it’s a game-changer. What people come in with is very diverse, but there are some common threads. Counseling can give people a different way of thinking and navigating emotions and how they handle relationships. There are also these positive examples of people growing.”

At the beginning of April, Samaritan Center opened a new

Habitat for Humanity

through appeals, public and private donations and special events.

“A safe, dry, warm and affordable home offers a family a new chapter in life and the opportunity to build a brighter future,” said Andrew Szalay, LLHFH’s CEO and president.

“Open Doors is an important path to Habitat’s capacity to make a bigger impact on our local housing needs. Maybe you’re a low-income renter and you want to be part of the American Dream. You may not have a security deposit (to rent a home), much less a down payment (to purchase a house). It’s a mountain to climb. It’s almost out of the question for some families. But it’s something that Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity is overcoming.”

With the money it raises, LLHFH hopes to provide 30 houses, either through new construction or the renovation of existing structures, to first-time home buyers by 2026. The constructions currently being considered are located in the city of Lancaster, Columbia Borough and the city of Lebanon.

“We’re both the builder and the lender, so we can work on the finances to get people into these houses,” said Szalay. “How did we get here? Our population

has grown, and our sophis tication has grown, and the costs of houses have risen over the years. It’s become more profitable to build bigger houses. We’re here to empower firsttime home buyers.”

From a total of 115 applicants, LLHFH is cur rently serving 22 locals interested in affordable housing.

“They’re the fabric of our community,” said Bal estier. “They’re helping make our community run, but they can’t afford to live here. Many are coming from a rent situation and can’t afford to continue to rent. We have applicants who are single. Most are families with children who are looking to live near their work or where their children go to school. We want to build where our families want to live. It makes life a little easier.”

LLHFH is one of 2,100 affiliates of Habitat for Humanity across 100 countries. Since being established in 1986, the local chapter has provided over 250 new or renovated homes.

counseling space at 33 N. Market St., Lancaster, to augment the mission started at its main location at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. In addition to increasing the nonprofit’s coverage area, the downtown office will allow Samaritan Center to reach more people and provide more mental health services.

“We’re very aware of the gap between demand and the availability of counseling,” said Schedler. “We’re involved in that conversation. The good news is that we’ve seen a turn in people’s willingness to get help since COVID. Who doesn’t need to talk to somebody?

Now we’re seeing the response to that. We saw a record demand over the last four years. Progress is being made, but it will take years to level back out.”

Housed on the fourth floor of a historic building near Lancaster Central Market, Samaritan Center North Market features five

new counseling offices. Samaritan Center, which is operated by 41 employees, 25 of whom are full-time or part-time therapists, has added five new counselors.

“It’s everyone in the community, from all walks of life,” said Schedler of Samaritan Center’s counseling clientele. “We’ve seen all ages reach out. It could be older adults; some of our counselors work with children and teens, families, couples, individuals. There really are no groups of folks not reaching out. We have in-person and virtual capabilities, so we can work with anyone in Pennsylvania. But the bulk of our clients seen in-house are Lancaster County residents.”

In 2023, Samaritan Center provided more than 14,000 counseling sessions. With the addition of North Market, Samaritan Center now has the capability to provide an additional 6,000 sessions.

“Samaritan Center does many things in the community, and counseling is just

LCHS plans concert

The Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fine and performing arts department will present “A Fresh Field of Music,” part of its LCHS Community Outreach Concert and Lecture Series, on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. The event will take place at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster.

The concert will feature pianist Frances Veri, vio -

linist Michael Jamanis, and cellist Susan Moyer Bergeron, who is a Lancaster native. They will premiere Richard Field’s Piano Trio No. 1, which blends elements of classical, jazz, and popular music. They will also present works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Dvorak, and Piazzolla.

Jamanis is the son of Veri, and he, Bergeron,

one of them,” said Schedler. “We just reached a point where we were out of space. We wanted to come up with a way to serve more people, and we’re excited about being in the city for the first time. Our goal is to provide improved mental health to everyone. Samaritan Center’s mission is to be as accessible as possible to meet people’s needs for counseling services, and now we’re more accessible than ever.”

Samaritan Center was established in 1987 by a group from Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, interested in providing accredited, faith-based counseling. Over the last 37 years, the services

and Field have known each other since childhood. Field now resides in Budapest, Hungary.

Jamanis and Veri have been artists in residence at the LCHS performing arts series since 2012. They have a history of involvement in the music community of Lancaster and around the world as touring artists.

Samaritan Center board members meet to discuss the expansion of counseling services at North Market. See LCHS pg 11

Samaritan Center provides have changed to meet the evolving needs of the community.

“It was really a leap of faith to jump out and start a new counseling center,” said Schedler. “Over time, Samaritan Center has established itself by providing high-quality counseling services. Mostly through word of mouth, many lives have been changed. We’ve had a legacy of growing thoughtfully.”

Lancaster artist featured in Philadelphia Eagles’ art gala

JJ Roach of Lancaster doesn’t see the world in the same way most people do. The 20-year-old artist has a keen eye for complex patterns and intricate details, which he often quickly spots in what appear to be ordinary settings. In 2020, JJ began leaning into his unique instincts to create elaborate, large-scale drawings that spare no detail. Over the last four years, JJ has continued to hone his craft by expanding his portfolio and participating in art shows and events in Lancaster County and beyond, including the Philadelphia Eagles Art Gala Charity Auction held in March.

the Eagle” in time for the gala.

“It was fun and crazy all at once,” JJ said of the exhibit’s opening night, which he attended with Carol. “I’ve been to art galas and fundraisers before, but never ones with NFL stars or anything.” The opening night at Arch Enemy Arts was attended by art collectors, supporters of the Eagles Autism Foundation and famous players from the Philadelphia football team. “It was beautiful, green chaos,” Carol added.

Kyle Keen joins the team at Everence

Kyle Keen recently joined Everence Financial as the director of organizational services for the company’s offices in Lancaster, Ephrata, Mount Joy, Mechanicsburg, Chambersburg and Belleville. This is a newly designed position to better serve and grow relationships with organizational clients.

“Green Is the Heart Inspired” was held from March 25 to April 15 at Arch Enemy Arts, a gallery located in Philadelphia’s historic Old City. The art gala and auction, which benefited the Eagles Autism Foundation, featured 35 pieces created by artists from the greater Philadelphia area. JJ was among three of the featured artists who have been diagnosed with autism.

JJ’s mother, Carol, first learned about the Eagles Autism Foundation in February from her other son, John. After doing some research and making a few phone calls, Carol received a response from the foundation, which invited JJ to participate in the upcoming gala by submitting a green piece of artwork. JJ had been working on a large drawing that he hadn’t colored in yet, and he decided to apply the Eagles’ green and white color scheme to have it included. Despite the short timeframe, which necessitated several latenight drawing sessions, JJ finished his piece “Eye of

After a few bids, JJ’s piece sold for nearly $1,000. Sporting a glittering green suit and tie, JJ met other artists featured in the exhibit and a few of the Eagles players, as well as the team’s mascot, Swoop.

As a child, JJ was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, which often made it difficult for him to concentrate in class. When he was 16 years old, JJ started working on a drawing to thank his teachers for their patience and guidance. After showing the finished piece to a friend, JJ realized he had inadvertently drawn the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical sequence that frequently appears in nature and is associated with the golden ratio. “I mostly still rely on my instincts, mind and deeper thoughts when I’m drawing,” JJ said.

“(JJ) thinks in shapes and patterns,” Carol said. “I started to realize that’s the way his brain works.” JJ said he hopes to share his story with other people who may have autism or ADHD to let them know that anyone can excel - even if they think differently from others.

EMU at Lancaster

“The common space is large and open. We’ll be closer to the (Lancaster) airport.”

Located within the Greenfield Corporate Center at 1846 Charter Lane, Suite 212, Lancaster, for the last 30 years, EMU at Lancaster is moving its four classrooms to the Listrak building at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz, in time for summer classes to begin July 1. The move will provide EMU at Lancaster with an additional 5,000 square feet for classrooms, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training laboratory, student advisory areas, a cafeteria and coffee bar, ample parking and outdoor space.

EMU at Lancaster executed a multi-year lease and plans to perform some minor upgrades to the property’s infrastructure, information technology and communications.

“We take pride in our sense of community and serving our community, whether it’s through credited or non-credited courses,” said Sharp. “Our mission in Lancaster is to provide programs that aren’t available in other sectors. Our vision is to serve our students with high-quality education. Our goal is to have a build-

ing that’s welcoming to students and instructors. We’re moving to a state-ofthe-art building.”

“Like many commercial landlords, we have re-evaluated our physical properties and have determined that we do not need the entire 93,000 square feet of our headquarters building,” said Ross Kramer, Listrak’s CEO. “As strong supporters of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), we felt that EMU at Lancaster would be a great fit and believe the new space will provide a learning environment conducive to students’ academic and professional growth.”

EMU at Lancaster’s current enrollment is over 400 students, but many attend through online courses.

When the university opens its Warwick Township location, nearly 100 students are expected to attend weekly.

“The needs of today’s workforce are constantly changing,” said Sharp. “EMU at Lancaster is committed to providing postsecondary education and professional development training that offers students a competitive advantage. Our mission is to ensure that those who complete our programs

Eastern Mennonite University first established its local campus at a temporary location in Lancaster in 1996 before moving to Greenfield Corporate Center in 2002.

In addition to its CNA program, EMU at Lancaster offers a bachelor’s degree in leadership and organizational management, with an aviation concentration. The university plans to add a drone technology education program this fall.

“We want to graduate students who are forward-thinking and life citizens,” said Sharp. “We want our students to have a global understanding. Our goal is to raise strong leaders with compassion, not only in their lives but also their professional lives. We’re here to provide a pathway to students who may not have thought of education before.”
