Servant Stage To Present “Jump, Jive, And Jukebox!” By Ann Mead Ash

Wally Calderon is overseeing the Servant Stage production of “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” with enthusiasm and energy. Not only is Calderon directing the nearly 30-member cast of teenagers, but he is the choreographer and the person who chose the 20 musical numbers that span the decades from the 1950s to the present and cover genres from rock to pop to Broadway with a special emphasis on the music of the 1980s thrown in. Perhaps, however, Calderon’s

most crucial role is that of teacher. “I teach these students how to put all their gifts and talents together,” noted Calderon. “It’s a huge reward to see (students) learn to be supportive of one another … and to see each student rise to the challenge.” Servant Stage’s newest show will be performed in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, at 3 and 7 p.m. each day. The show has also been slated to be performed during May at several area retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Garden Spot See Servant Stage pg 5

Lancaster-area students are rehearsing to present “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” in four shows at Lancaster Bible College on May 18 and 19. The all-teenage cast will perform songs from the 1950s through the present. Broadway show tunes and songs from the 1980s will be included.

Honor Society (NHS), and he is a member of the Quiz Bowl team. Klemmer competes with the cross-country team, and he is a member of the track team. In the fall, Klemmer plans to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he currently plans to major in international political economy. Klemmer noted that with the first draft of his speech completed, he plans to discuss the achievements of his classmates. “This isn’t about me,” he said. “It’s an address I am giving, but I should not be the topic.” With that in mind, Klemmer plans to laud the members of the LCHS Class of 2019 for how far they have come. “I want to emphasize how we all have done a lot of work and some incredible things,” said Klemmer. “I (will) encourage (my classmates) to keep moving forward (in that spirit) … to keep bringing their A game as they go to college, trade school or wherever.” Klemmer is thankful that he had the opportunity to attend LCHS. “I am glad I went to LCHS because of the incredible teachers and coaches I have had,” he reflected. “They really do care, and they give their best efforts in helping me to improve.” Ryan is the son of Timothy and Gayle Ryan of Manheim. At school, he has served as captain of Quiz Bowl and BrainBusters. He was recently elected Class of 2019 prom king by his classmates. He has also served as vice president of NHS. He is a member of the French National Honor Society. Ryan has played soccer throughout his time at LCHS, and he was named an All-Star during his senior year. Outside school, he has played rec league basketball. In the fall, Ryan plans to attend the

United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he will study economics and pre-law. Upon completion of his studies at West Point, he will begin serving his country as an active-duty officer in the United States Army. In his speech, Ryan said he will congratulate his classmates on all the hard work they have completed in the last four years. “It is an accomplishment to be where we are,” he said. “It has been a great four years.” Ryan also plans to thank those who have helped him and his classmates to reach this moment. “I want to thank everyone for what they have done for me and for the school,” he said. Ryan noted that his years at LCHS have been meaningful to him. “I love LCHS because it’s a big family, and that sets us up well for the future,” he said. “I love the communal aspect of Lancaster Catholic,” he added, noting that he knows most of his fellow classmates and has close bonds with many of them. He also complimented the LCHS faculty. “The teachers are very supportive,” he said. “I haven’t had one I didn’t like.” A fixture in Lancaster since 1928, LCHS strives to provide education rooted in faith and tradition. LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Pennsylvania State Department of Education. The academic curriculum includes a number of Advanced Placement (AP) classes, opportunities for small class environments, distance learning, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and the Fine & Performing Arts Certifications.

“There are a lot of new (exhibitors) coming, and it’s almost fifty-fifty with arts and crafts,” noted Hobday. Some of the artists and crafters will be traveling from outside the central Pennsylvania region to participate in the show, but Hobday emphasized that they all feature handmade work. Showcasing original work rather than reproductions has been of the utmost importance to Hobday for the fall show as well, which has been held for 31 years and counting. Plenty of food and beverage options will be available for folks to purchase throughout the grounds of Root’s as well. Adding a spring show has certainly come with its challenges, but Hobday is optimistic that the new event will fill a void in Lancaster and hopefully be a hit with the community. “A lot of the spring shows that had been happening aren’t anymore,” she explained. “I’m hoping people will come and like it. We’ve just gotten a lot more artwork than I expected for it being the first spring show.” Promoting the importance of art to the community is a priority for Hobday, who is a watercolor artist herself. She also taught art at Hempfield High School for 25 years. The fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show has grown into a two-day event and earned a ranking as one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country from Sunshine Artist magazine. The 32nd annual fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1. Over the years, Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show founder and chairperson Marilyn Hobday received numerous requests from exhibitors for a spring show to be added into the calendar in addition to the traditional fall event. “Finally after enough prodding, I decided to go for it,” said Hobday with a laugh. “Our main focus for this first year is just getting a lot of quality art work,” Hobday continued. “It’s going to be a fun show. I think this will get people excited about the fall show, and I think they’re really going to complement each other.” The inaugural spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Approximately 100 exhibitors will fill the stands at the spring show, including painters, photographers, jewelers, potters, woodworkers, and others - representing a range of styles within their fields, from traditional to contemporary and beyond. “It’s a nice eclectic show, and I like that there’s something there for every price point,” Hobday added.

Village, Luther Acres, and Calvary Fellowship Homes. More than 80 students tried out to be part of the Servant Stage 2019 season, and Calderon believes the turnout was due to the many young people who were interested in the musical revue that he named “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” “It’s a revue of anything you would want to hear when you put your quarter in the jukebox,” explained Calderon. “There’s a lot of variation,” he stated, adding that “Wild Thing,” “Footloose,” and “Do You Love Me?” will be included, along with songs by New Kids on the Block and music from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Calderon endeavors to add depth to each number to give audiences more than song and dance. “We find little stories within each song,” he said. “It’s acting first. The song was written for a reason, so let’s try to tell a story within one song.” The intensive rehearsal process gave the cast members only a week to become familiar with the songs in the show before beginning rehearsals on March 24. “We meet each person where they are and push them a little farther in their training,” said Calderon. “The talent is incredible, and I am just thrilled at what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time.” Students who are taking part in the show are responding to the technique. “I grew up doing dance and theater separately,” said Mackenzie Neff. “Getting to

do theater with dancing is kind of a dream. It helps all of us stretch ourselves.” “It’s really challenging,” noted Sydney Norgaard, who wanted to take part in the show after seeing her brother, Brayden, perform in last year’s revue. “Once we’re able to (perform) the number, it is satisfying. Teamwork plays a role in that.” Mackenzie is enjoying watching that process unfold as opening night approaches. “It’s overwhelming to see all the talent coming together creating this,” she said. “Watching everyone come together as a team supporting and challenging each other makes us more independent as performers.” Kolby Colmary, a veteran of several Servant Stage shows, noted that he loves that the show goes to nursing homes to reach people who cannot come to the theater. Under Calderon’s direction, the students have become acutely aware of how audiences respond to them. “You have to learn how to adapt how you’re interacting to reach every audience,” explained Isabel Subacz, who serves as dance captain for the show. Brayden agreed, saying, “It’s so fun to see the audience’s faces light up when they recognize the music and sing along.” Performances are open to the public on a pay-what-you-will basis. To reserve seats, readers may visit www.servantstagecompany.com or call 717-560-8241.

International Meal from pg 1 Latin American countries,” noted Bortzel. Hanson agreed, listing Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico among the places whose cuisine will be represented, along with Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “We will have Italy, Russia, and from Asia, Vietnam,” Hanson added. Ranck-Hower chimed in, “That’s why we say we represent five continents.” The international meal will be held at the New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The buffetstyle meal will allow guests to purchase food to take out or eat at the church. According to Hanson, the 2018 buffet offered 260 guests 43 unique dishes made by staff members, parents, and

friends of NHELC. “We have parents and teachers and community members from so many different countries represented here (at NHELC),” said Bortzel. “The teachers cook (dishes associated with) their heritage.” Hanson noted that they hope to serve more people at this year’s event. Dishes will be labeled and will provide guests with information about the country of origin. The meal is a fundraiser for NHELC. According to Bortzel, tuition from students covers about 85 percent of costs for the nonprofit center. Ranck-Hower explained that NHELC does not cap the number of students it enrolls who receive government aid. Funds raised by the international meal will benefit the

organization’s general operating budget. Hanson noted that last year’s meal raised nearly $5,000. NHELC has set a goal of $7,500 for the 2019 meal. Sponsorships are an important part of the fundraiser. “We have reached out to more people for sponsorships (this year),” said Hanson. “We are very appreciative of our sponsors from last year, and we think it’s important to thank them,” she stated, noting that a number of New Holland area organizations and businesses have served as sponsors for the fundraiser. NHELC was recently awarded the STAR 3 rating by the Keystone Stars, an early education rating system that evaluates quality improvement. Bortzel noted that

the Keystone representatives were impressed with the number of children with varying needs that NHELC serves. Jennifer Morales, academic and behavioral support coordinator for NHELC, acts as an advocate for parents of these students. In addition, several NHELC teachers speak Spanish, so the organization has begun offering language immersion as part of the curriculum in some classrooms. The meal will be served at a set price for those age 11 and up. Discounts will be offered for children ages 7 to 10 and 4 to 6. Children age 3 and under may eat for free. Individuals who have questions about the meal may call 717-354-4440. More information about NHELC may be found at www.creatingcommunityforkids.com.

L.H. Brubaker Appliances Marks 87th Anniversary L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L. Frank Sr., joined the family business. In the fall of 1974, L.H. Brubaker moved into a new store that sat beside the original location on Strasburg Pike. The facility at 340 Strasburg Pike, Lancaster, continues to be the corporate headquarters and main showroom.

The next several decades saw notable expansion of the business. Water treatment products and service were added in 1985. Showrooms were opened at 5303 E. Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, in 2004 and across from Park City at 896L Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, in 2012. Across the three stores, 72 employees currently work for L.H. Brubaker, selling and servicing an extensive selection of highend, built-in, and professional-quality kitchen appliances from Wolf, Sub-Zero, Thermador, Bosch, and Bertazzoni. Appliances in a range of price points are available from GE, Samsung, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid. L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment aims to be a one-stop shop with the most brands in the tri-state area. “Eighty-seven years later, we are excited to be celebrating what Lester H. Brubaker started,” said Donald L. Frank Sr., who is the business’ sole owner. “Now with the third generation of Franks working within the company, we are committed to continuing the longstanding tradition of L.H. Brubaker. Our customers tell us that it is our professional staff that sets us apart.” Donald Sr. noted that knowledgeable sales consultants will help customers pick the appliance or water treatment option that is right for their needs and their budgets, and the consultants will refrain from high-pres-

sure sales tactics. “And it doesn’t stop there,” he continued. “We have our own professional installation teams for both appliances and water treatment. Every appliance purchase is backed by our own factory-trained installation and courteous service specialists.” Members of the public are invited to celebrate with the Franks and the employees of L.H. Brubaker during an anniversary event that will be held from Wednesday, May 15, to Saturday, May 25. Readers may see the ad in this paper for special savings and offers. The Strasburg Pike and Mechanicsburg stores open at 9 a.m. daily, and they close at 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and at 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The Plaza Boulevard store opens at 10 a.m. each day and closes at 8 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and at 4 p.m. on Saturdays. All three locations are closed on Sundays. For more information about L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, readers may call 717-299-2351 (Strasburg Pike), 717-796-0150 (Mechanicsburg), or 717-945-5851 (Plaza Boulevard); visit www.lhbrubakers.com; follow lh_brubaker on Instagram; or find “LH Brubaker Appliances Inc” and “LH Brubaker Water Treatment” on Facebook.

Alumni of the former Western School are invited to a reunion and lunch on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. Western School was one of approximately a dozen one- or two-room elementary schools in Earl Township providing education to children during most of the 1900s. Western closed its doors after the 1971-72 school year after buses began taking rural students to larger, consolidated schools. Western was located on the north side of Route 23 on the west side of New Holland where there is now an empty lot next to the Sauder Chevrolet car lot. After the school closed, the building was used for a picture framing shop, a law office and other businesses until it was eventually torn down. In 2017, 29 women who attended Western School gathered for a lunch reunion. The men asked to be invited to the next reunion. Alumni are now in their late 50s or older. Participants at the upcoming reunion will be asked to pay a nominal fee for expenses in addition to buying their own lunch. There will be a presentation on the Western School history. Alumni will be invited to tell stories and share photos. Reservations are appreciated; to make reservations, readers may contact Vivian Martin Colatta at lenny colatta@comcast.net or 717-656-8887.

National EMS Week will be observed this year from Sunday, May 19, to Saturday, May 25. The week was created to recognize the importance of emergency medical services (EMS) and to honor the first responders who provide life-saving medical care. “EMS STRONG - National EMS Week has been declared by Gov. Tom Wolf, who encourages all citizens to recognize the value and the accomplishments of EMS providers and to thank them for their invaluable service to our communities, said Marisa Seubert, marketing and development coordinator for Lancaster EMS. Lancaster EMS serves most of southern Lancaster County as well as some of the eastern and western parts of the county. It has a fleet of 45 vehicles operating from 11 locations. In 2018, Lancaster EMS responded to 37,831 requests for services. Seubert noted that in addition to emergency medical care, Lancaster EMS also provides non-emergency medical transport services, emergency medical technician and paramedic education, public health care and education programs, community paramedics, medical standby coverage at special events, and tactical paramedics to the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. “National EMS Week is an optimal time to bring EMS providers and the community See EMS pg 11

EMS from pg 10 together through awareness and outreach events,” Seubert said. “We are offering the public an opportunity to meet us and learn more about what we do for our community.” The week will kick off on May 19 with an EMS Appreciation Family Picnic Day at the Lancaster Barnstormers game. On Monday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public is invited to attend open houses at the Millersville station, 100 E. Charlotte St., and the Lincoln Highway station, 1829 Lincoln Highway, Lancaster. Tours of the stations will be available, and visitors may meet staff members, learn about EMS, and observe demonstrations of hands-only CPR and Stop the Bleed. Tuesday, May 21, has been designated SAVE-A-LIFE Day. Lancaster EMS will be represented in Lancaster’s Penn Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mayor Danene Sorace is slated to read the National EMS Week proclamation at noon. During the event, Lancaster EMS will offer demonstrations of handsonly CPR, Stop the Bleed, and naloxone administration. Resources for opioid addiction, the safe disposal of medication, and stroke awareness will be available. A country music station will broadcast during the event, and Lancaster Barnstormers mascot Cylo will pose for pictures with attendees. Wednesday, May 22, will be EMS for Children Day. Lancaster EMS members will visit elementary schools in Penn Manor, Solanco, Conestoga Valley, and Lancaster school districts. Thursday, May 23, will be Safety Day. Lancaster EMS will have a booth at the Lancaster Barnstormers game and will provide demonstrations of hands-only CPR and Stop the Bleed, along with offering medication reconciliation, fall risks/risk assessment checklists, and pill boxes. Friday, May 24, will be EMS Recognition Day at the Millersville station, where Lancaster EMS will honor all clinical and nonclinical staff members. “We will salute our EMS professionals, who go above and beyond every day to create positive change in our community with long-lasting impact,” Seubert remarked. “Our Lancaster EMS EMTs (emergency medical technicians) and paramedics respond to emergency calls, perform lifesaving skills under stress, and provide patient care in intense situations. EMS is community care that takes time, energy, and heart. Our Lancaster EMS providers go the extra mile every day, 24/7.” A variety of restaurant and painting fundraisers to benefit Lancaster EMS have also been planned for the week. Readers may find “Lancaster EMS” on Facebook or visit www.lemsa.com for more information.

Folks who enjoy music and relaxing with a cup of coffee will want to be at the Courtyard Coffeehouse in Strasburg on Saturday, May 18. Organizers of the event invite the public to stop by and get to know some new faces in the Lancaster music scene. Attendees will be treated to a mix of American folk and rock with a country twist. The show will begin at 7 p.m., and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m. An outdoor event has been planned, but the festivities will be moved indoors if the weather does not cooperate. Courtyard Coffeehouse will bring together two acts of acoustic music beginning with returning artist Jon Knauss of See Coffeehouse pg 14

Lady Bucks Defeat Knights, Move to 5-1 by Leah Sintic

the regular season, giving them a 5-1 record. The CV girls took down another Highlights were plentiful in the opponent in last week’s 86-64 conquest Buckskin win, including a sweep of of Hempfield in the final dual meet of top honors in the throwing events

featuring Destiny Ellerbe’s shot put of 37-9, Aaliyah Laukhuff’s discus throw of 95-7, and Marianna Dariychuk’s javelin toss of 91-7. “Destiny threw another personal best which moves her up to top three in the league, and into the top seven in the district,” noted coach Nick Loreto. “Marianna will represent CV in the league meet. She only started with javelin a few weeks ago and continues to improve,” added Loreto. CV also swept the jumping events. Aviona Saunders soared to two top spots, with a 17-6 long jump, and a 36-10.25 triple, complimented by Alisan Dodd’s win in high jump (5-5). Jess Teleguz secured first place in the pole vault reaching 8-9. When it came to hurdles, Jane Livingston continues to rise above the competition, this time taking the high hurdles in 13.7, and 300

hurdles in 43.7. Though Hempfield put up strong contenders in the sprints, CV’s Jordyn Hock crossed first in the 400 meter dash clocking a 59.4, and was also a part of the winning 4x100 relay team, joined by Sarah Castronova, Livingston, and Dana Wentz (48.9). Another group effort produced a win in the 4x4 relay (4:23.1) comprised of Kate Kmieczak, Kylynn Frankford, Lauren Thrush, and Alex Slingluff. For the boys, it was a flipped script, on the wrong end of the same score, 86-64. Though not a team victory, several CV athletes rose to the surface pulling in Buckskin points. Joe Cardina won three individual events which included triple jump (42-6.25), high jump (6-4), and high hurdles (15.1). Obed Bamungwa registered two first place finishes with a 20-2 long jump, and a 40.9 time in the 300 hurdles.

Cardina and Bamungwa were joined by Loago Snavely and Nate Grucelski to claim a relay victory in the 4x400 in 3:31.1. Grucelski also cruised to a 1600 triumph crossing in 4:23.7, and Kyle Funck produced the day’s best pole vault soaring to 11-9. VOLLEYBALL Buckskin volleyball closed their regular season with a 3-1 win over Manheim Township on Wednesday after succumbing 3-0 to Warwick on Monday, leveling their overall record at 8-8, and league showings at 6-6. With a young and mostly inexperienced squad this year, the team relied heavily on leadership from its three seniors; setter Tanner Shertzer, outside hitter Robbie Krasinski, and defensive specialist Carlos Barbosa, and took a moment to honor them at Wednesday’s home match against Township. “We were leaning on them for court leadership and helping to guide

our younger players to succeed,” pointed out head coach Blake Youndt regarding his seniors. The 3-1 win over Township was a great display of that leadership as it is transferred to the underclassmen. After jumping out to a two-set advantage, the Bucks slipped in the third set, but regrouped for a commanding win in the fourth (25-14, 25-14, 22-25, 25-5) supported by their home crowd. Krasinski powered 12 kills in the offensive effort, while Shertzer put up 38 setter assists. Barbosa also had a big senior night, firing four aces and supplying 18 digs. Freshman Jayden Rice gave a glimpse of the future in his defensive performance which included three blocks. BASEBALL Baseball also closed out their season last week, holding on for a 6-5 win over Cocalico on Wednesday to conclude their season with a record of 7-14. CV hit the ball well in the contest,

with a season-total effort of 35 goals and 28 assists. Other offensive contributions included a hat trick from Steven Emerson, Ryan Querry’s two, and one each from Logan Weaver, Parker Graff, Zach Fisher, and Nathan Heck. Sharing responsibility on the opposite end of the field, three CV keepers combined for seven saves, Andrew Roland (3), CJ Ballard (3), and Justin Norwood (1). Reflecting back on the season, head coach Cameron Tough can’t help but point out the vast improvement and hard work the team put in. “More players committed to showing up in the off season than in years past, and I think that the early skill development made a difference this year,” credited Tough.

Finishing the L-L league season with an even split 5-5 was an achievement in itself and doesn’t fully reflect the narrow margin by which some of those contests were lost. “We had a string of one-goal losses,” noted Tough. “Those losses came against some teams that put more than 10 goals against us in previous years.” The closing of a chapter is always bittersweet, but the future is bright for CV lacrosse. “I’m very proud of the team,” summarized Tough. “Our senior class has really invested into building our culture at CV and it has made a huge difference. It has inspired more students to come out for the team and for players to continue building on what we have started.” GIRLS’ LACROSSE A 19-3 loss to Governor Mifflin signified the close of the regular season for girls’ lacrosse last Friday. Hannah Chadwick, Abigail Morley,

and Hayley Schwartz each netted a goal for CV in the contest with Morley picking up a pair of assists. On defense, Buckskin keeper, Anna Kollbotn, gathered seven saves when faced with Mifflin’s 26 shots on goal. While the squad’s league record of 5-6 left them just outside the L-L playoff bracket, their overall 8-9 record earned them a trip to the District III playoffs. “I am happy for the team, and the work they have put in this season,” commented head coach Mike Chadwick, pointing out that this is the first CV girls’ lacrosse team to earn a District III playoff berth. The Bucks (seeded twelfth) will face off against fifth seed Wilson. “We know Wilson is a good team. We need to play a complete game and not make mental mistakes-these girls are up for the challenge,” encouraged Chadwick.

gathering 11 hits, led by two apiece from David Giles, Keegan Martin, and Edwin Hernandez. Hernandez, a sophomore, also led the team in RBIs with three, while Carson Crouse and Nathan Scheid chipped in with one apiece. Cocalico fought back with a fiverun blitz in the bottom of the seventh, but winning pitcher, Jarrett Imler, squelched the momentum surge and secured the final out of the contest with a caught fly ball. Imler was awarded the win after six innings on the mound which included five strikeouts and four walks. “The boys worked hard and did a great job this year,” reflected head coach Jeffrey Craig. “The word that comes to mind with this year’s group is ‘growth’,” he added, pointing out the teams’ win count tripled this year in comparison with the 2018 season (2-19). “We had a great group of seniors that will, without question, go on to do great things, and our underclassmen learned that winning is possible through hard work and belief in themselves,” summarized Craig pointing the team’s focus onward with high hopes for the future. BOYS’ LACROSSE A 17-6 win at Kennard-Dale High School capped the boys’ lacrosse season on a high note, bringing them to an overall record of 7-9. The Bucks took over control of the contest from the get-go, going up 8-0 in the first period. The CV attack was led by a massive effort from senior Will Stone who finished with six goals and one assist. Fellow senior and lead scorer, Charles Braught, finished the day with two goals and three assists to rise to the top of both categories

Kilo Lima. Knauss described Kilo Lima as an “Americana music collective that seeks to tell stories of hope and grief. Their sense of songwriting and storytelling puts a fresh twist on the more engrained and traditional aspects of the folk genre.” Knauss will be followed by the musical trio of David Wilson of Bailey Run, Steve Davis, and Lynn Royer. Wilson has opened for national artists such as Kansas, Tim Reynolds’ TR3, Bess Rogers, Doug Paisley, Sister Hazel, and Sonia Leigh, among others. His music has been featured on radio stations in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Wilson has also been a featured musical artist in several Lancaster lifestyle magazines. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring this level of talent to the Courtyard,” said Mark Feiler, one of the event organizers. “Each year we do this, it seems to get better and better. This promises to be an evening of great music.” A coffee bar with specialty pours, other beverages, and snacks will be available during the event. The Courtyard is located on the campus of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., one block south of the square in Strasburg. The church sponsors several other music events throughout the year, including a bluegrass festival in August and an open house in December. More information is available by calling the church office at 717-687-6030 or visiting www.facebook.com/straspres or www.straspres.org.

Two musical acts will perform at the Courtyard Coffeehouse on May 18 at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Conestoga Valley Edition - May 15, 2019 - 15

Orchestra Will Conclude Season The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present “Shostakovich Triumphant,” the group’s sixth and final concert of its 72nd season, on Saturday, May 18, at the Winter Center at Millersville University at 3 and 8 p.m. The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The concert will include the Aram Khachaturian’s “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite,” Russell Peck’s “The Glory and the Grandeur” and Dimitri Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Khachaturian is considered one of the leading Soviet composers and the most well-known Armenian composer of the 20th century. He was born in 1903 to poor Armenian parents in present-day Georgia and grew up with little formal music training until age 18 when he enrolled in the Gnessin Musical Institute. He

studied cello, composition and biology, and he was awarded many prestigious awards and privileges for his compositions, which predominantly exhibited folk Armenian flavors. Khachaturian was known as one of the “three titans of Soviet music,” along with Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His works span many genres, including concertos, symphonies, ballets and music for film, which can still be regularly heard today. The “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite” was written in 1941 for a play with the same name created by Russian poet and playwright Mikhail Lermontov. Despite the play having a tragic theme, the waltz is particularly spirited. Peck was a composer from Detroit, Mich., who was heavily influenced by the soul music being played in the city in the 1950s. A musician from a very early age,

Peck graduated from the University of Michigan with a doctorate in composition in 1972. He went on to be a professor at prestigious universities, including the Eastman School of Music. In his later years, he left teaching to pursue his passion - advocating for an end to world hunger. “The Glory and the Grandeur” is one of his most well-known pieces and is a work of Americana. The percussion section is in the spotlight, as a trio of percussion soloists plays 110 individual percussion instruments. Shostakovich was 19 when he began composing music. His career spanned a timeframe similar to the reign of Stalin, and artists of this era were severely punished, even executed, if their craft was perceived as going against the views and parameters set forth by the Communist Party. Shostakovich’s opera “Lady

Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” received public criticism from Stalin, causing Shostakovich to fear his career, and even his life, would end. Shostakovich pressed on with composing, and about a year after the Stalin criticism, he debuted a new work, his Symphony No. 5. Reflecting a much more conservative approach than his previous works, the symphony met with approval. After a successful sale last year, Mary Armstrong returned as chair of this year’s book sale. She is excited to be back at the helm and leading the volunteer effort. Armstrong believes in the book sale and its ability to provide the library with critical financial support. “Watching the community come together to support the library and its services will never grow old,” she said. The book sale is recycling at its best. The community donates the books, volunteers process the donations, and book lovers flock to the sale to buy armloads of literary treasures. Proceeds from the sale directly benefit Lancaster Public Library and its patrons. With the Friends’ support, the library can continue providing meaningful and relevant services, resources, and materials to more than 325,000 visitors annually. Sixty-four years ago, the first Friends of Lancaster Public Library book sale raised $154. The Friends now generate nearly $200,000 annually by holding several book sales and fundraisers. Additionally, the Friends have two used book stores that are open year-round: the Marshall Street See Book sale pg 18
