With spirit, Aaron’s Acres Angels will present “The Garfield Movie”
BY JEFF FALK
Families spending time together for a good cause is one of the most rewarding types of fun. It’s a wholesome experience that can only be enhanced by the presence of angels - Aaron’s Acres Angels, that is.
Aaron’s Acres Angels is a group of 20 middle school and high school students from the Manheim Township, Conestoga Valley and Hempfield school districts, as well as from Linden Hall School for Girls in Lititz. The group of young volunteers lends a hand with Aaron’s Acres events when it can.
One of its next efforts is organizing and marketing an Aaron’s Acres’ family movie night at Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Thursday, May 30. The event will feature “The Garfield Movie,”
with showings at 4:30 and 6 p.m.
In addition to promoting the family movie night with flyers and posts on social media, Aaron’s Acres Angels will be greeting people and selling snacks to benefit the cause on the night of the event.
Everyone is welcome to attend, and all proceeds from the event will go to support Aaron’s Acres, a nonprofit located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of young people with disabilities. Aaron’s Acres is hoping to garner $1,500 in donations from the event.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by going to https://secure.givelively.org/ event/aarons-acres/aaron-s -acres-night-at-the-movies-2024.
“We’re generally looking to offer nights out for families in the community, and it also serves as a fundraiser for Aaron’s Acres,” said

Embrace fitness and fellowship with F3 Lanco
BY JEFF FALK
Filled with stress, struggles and challenges, life can be difficult. But there are safeguards in place designed to lessen the burden.
An all-men’s social club, F3 Lanco (Fitness, Faith, Fellowship) takes a proactive approach toward diffusing hardships and improving the quality of life. For the key to the club’s success, one doesn’t need to look much further than its name.
“Just in general, I think guys sometimes have a hard time
making new connections,” said Keith Martin, F3 Lanco’s leader. “As we get older, some of those connections we had when we were younger fade away. Men do have a hard time finding the time to socialize. With F3, we can get after something and have that connection.”
Already well established in the county, F3 Lanco has now found its way into Manheim Township.
F3 Lanco began meeting at Manheim Township’s Overlook Park, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, at the end of April. The informal,

Ride for the Community exemplifies what Rotary is all about
BY JEFF FALK
How are Rotary Club members and bicycles alike? They both may be underappreciated vehicles for goodness and kindness.
Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise’s upcoming Ride for the Community promotes the relationship that exists between the local cycling community and altruism. It also serves as an opportunity for individuals to explore what Rotary Clubs do.
“You don’t have to be a particularly avid, trained athlete to come
out and do it,” said Steve Bell, one of Ride for the Community’s directors. “We’re trying to expand our impact on the community by encouraging participation. I think Rotary, in many ways, is the impetus to participate. We’re trying to introduce community

45-minute sessions, which are conducted at dawn every Monday, consist of structured workouts, support and friendship.
Mailed outside our circulation area for $36/year.
“Fitness is what brings everybody out,” said Martin, a resident of Landisville. “We want to be fit, and sometimes in our busy lives, we put it on the back burner. We’re looking for an opportunity to better ourselves. Friendship is the glue that develops the bonds. It’s about being there for the other guys. A lot of our guys are dedicating themselves to their families, and this gives them an opportunity to network with other men. Some
people hear the word ‘faith,’ and they think, ‘Oh, it’s a religious group.’ But faith to us means just being part of something bigger than yourself.”
While each meeting is a unique experience, there are certain commonalities. Every session is free, they’re open to all men, they’re always conducted outdoors, they’re peer led and they always end in a circle-of-trust exercise. Men need not preregister for the meetings; they should simply show up.
“Something happened in my life, and I had some friends reach out to me,” said Patrick Cloonan, a resident of Manheim Township who’s helping coordinate F3 Lanco’s local recruitment efforts. “They said, ‘If you need anything, let us know.’ They suggested an F3 meeting, and I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to be there, but I was happy when I was. I always liked fitness, and that was the glue. I came to realize that it was the place for me. That’s my story, but everybody’s story is different.”
An international organization of 4,543 regular workout groups in 370 regions of the world, F3 was introduced in Lancaster County by transplant Gary Fyke in October of 2017. Currently, about 200 local men meet for F3 workouts five times a week at Rapho Township Community Park, 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy, and Mountville Park, 351 N. Lemon St., Mountville.
The Angels have been associated with Aaron’s Acres for about four years now. During that time, they’ve supported and assisted with similar events, like bingo, Aaron’s Acres summer camp programs, crafts, games, bake sales and other fundraising activities.
“It’s young people helping young people,” said Mullen. “They brainstormed and together came up with the name. I think they felt like the term ‘angel’ kind of means they’re protecting and watching over our participants, and they felt it was an appropriate name.”
“We talk a lot about disability awareness,” Mullen continued. “It’s a great opportunity for them to come together and do community service and give back. Everywhere they go in their lives they’ll be around people who
“(The Angels) are really interesting kids involved with a lot of different things,” added Mullen. “It’s interesting the kinds of things they fit into their schedules. They’re involved with a lot of other things - sports, musicals, National Honor Society. We’re there with them to show them heart and kindness. I’m really happy I get to be a part of it.” Aaron’s Acres was established in 1998 by a group of local families that desired better services for their children with disabilities. Today, Aaron’s Acres serves two groups of individuals with disabilities, ages 5 through 21 and ages 22 through 40, from Lancaster, Dauphin, Berks, Lebanon and Cumberland counties with a variety of seasonal programs. For more information, visit www .aaronsacres.org.
“Perspective and empathy are very important to me,” said Martin. “Knowing that other people are going through similar things gives me a better vision of the world around me. These are guys who are looking to improve something in their lives. There’s something missing. They’re looking to improve themselves, and they come into the workouts with the idea of wanting to make others better. They have good hearts.”

Temple Avenue to perform at park
Temple Avenue, a musical group that puts its own spin on jazz and swing standards, will perform on Sunday, May 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Admission is free.
In 2011, pianist Colin Mekeel, then a high school junior, started the Lancaster-based Temple Avenue jazz group with friends who were enrolled in the jazz program at Temple University. Temple Avenue plays concerts, dances, receptions, and other events throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. Many of the songs in its repertoire are well-known standards from the Great American Songbook, but the group also features some lesser-known tunes.
In addition to Mekeel, the Temple Avenue members who will perform at Grater Park include singer Cecilia Ferneborg, alto saxophonist Mervin Toussaint, and bassist Josh Machiz.
Weather permitting, the event will take place outdoors. Audience members are urged to bring folding chairs.
Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for the Eicher Arts Center Inc. To learn more about the organization, email info@eicher artscenter.com.
Estate planning seminar set
Jamie Detweiler, an Everence financial planner, will offer an “Estate Planning Basics” seminar at Fairmount on Monday, May 20, at 1:30 p.m. The seminar will be held in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room at 2100 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata, on the west side of the Fairmount campus.
Everence’s approach to estate planning combines people’s faith and values with their enduring goals and aspirations. People will learn how to develop a financial strategy filled with purpose that can empower them to enjoy retirement and care for the people and
causes they hold dear.
In addition to serving as part of Everence’s trust and estate team in Lancaster, Detweiler provides families, churches, and businesses with investment, insurance, and financial planning services. Coming from a background of service to the community through state government, Detweiler has appreciated the opportunity to continue to serve clients as they navigate the complexities of the financial industry.
He and his wife, Sarah, and their three young children live in Lancaster and are active members of Petra Church in New Holland. Detweiler is a graduate of Messiah College.
The seminar is free and open to the public. Reservations are required by calling 717-354-1893.

service through bike riding. We think Rotary is an underutilized means to participate in the community and do good in the community.”
A recreational ride and not a race, the 20th edition of the annual Ride for the Community will take place on Saturday, June 15, at Manheim Township Community Park, located at the corner of Petersburg Road and Rotary Road, Lancaster. The ride will begin at 9 a.m., and participants can register the day of the event or prior to it by going to www .active.com/lititz-pa/cycling/ races/rotary-ride-for-the -community-2024.
“You’re enjoying it with other people with the support we provide,” said Bell. “It’s a supported group activity. Bicycling is cool. It’s individuals, but you’re enjoying our ride with a hundred other people. Just like Rotary, we’re individuals in the community, but we’re not doing it by ourselves. I think a lot of people should just try something different as a family.”
Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise’s Ride for the Community offers cyclists various course lengths - a 10-mile ride, a 21-mile ride and a 43-mile ride, as well as combinations of those distances. From Manheim Township Community Park, the courses take riders north and east through Lancaster County’s scenic landscape before returning to the park.
The fully marked courses include built-in water and rest
stops. Snacks and lunch will also be provided.
“The way the courses are set up, you’re in scenic farmland, prime countryside,” said Bell. “You’re in very scenic areas where you can enjoy the nature of Lancaster County, and you’re not in a car. You experience it in a way that you can’t in a car.”
“In these modern times, more and more events are held inside,” continued Bell. “We’re outside increasing heart rates. There are definite health benefits to riding. It’s a healthy break from technology.”
Bell is expecting more than 100 cyclists of varying experience levels for the Ride for the Community. All proceeds from the sponsored event will benefit Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise’s community and global projects.
“It’s one of the most enjoyable days of the year for our club,” said Bell of the ride. “Rotary really offers people an avenue to serve the community and to network. It’s really about professional development and community service.”
“We do attract cycling enthusiasts from across the region,” Bell noted. “I’d like to see more casual riders come out.”
Affiliated with Rotary International, Lancaster Sunrise was chartered in 1997 and features 45 members. The club, whose motto is “Service Above Self,” meets every Thursday at 7:15 a.m. at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz.

The event was the culmination of more than 30 hours of training completed by each volunteer in order to assist children in Lancaster County’s foster care system.
CASA recently welcomed new volunteer advocates (front, from left) Irene Marianos, Rose Connelly, (back, from second from left) Kristin Antrim, Amy Harcourt, Laura Rusch, Bri Hornberger, Katie Boatwright, John Featherlin, and Kelly Frye. The Honorable Leonard G. Brown III (far left) swore them in, and the Honorable Shawn P. McLaughlin (far right) was also present.

A CASA volunteer is a trained citizen who is appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of a child in court. The children for whom volunteers advocate have been abused and neglected and placed in the foster care system. CASA volunteers work to help ensure a safe and permanent home
for the child as quickly as possible. The volunteer speaks with the child and others involved in the child’s life such as biological parents, foster parents, social workers, teachers, doctors, and therapists.
The new volunteers represent the 45th class of Lancaster County volunteer advocates sworn in. They join the 135 active volunteers currently advocating for 163 children in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. CASA hopes to one day provide a volunteer to every child in need.
CASA will hold information sessions about becoming a volunteer advocate on Wednesday, May 22, and Monday, June 3. The sessions will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information and to register, visit www.casalancleb.org or call 717-286-1430.
