Lancaster EMS Moms Receive Flowers And More By Ann Mead Ash

Members of Lancaster EMS staff who were mothers and who worked on Mother’s Day received flowers and gift cards from Worship Center and Whole Foods. Mothers at the East Lampeter Station that day included Jess C. (second from left) and Jess W. (second from right), who worked that day with Alexis D. (far left) and Alexa M. (far right).

Marisa Seubert, marketing and development coordinator with Lancaster EMS, knows that on Mother’s Day many of the emergency medical services families cannot be together. Thinking about that inspired her to consider what could be done for mothers this year. By partnering with Worship Center and Whole Foods, Seubert was able to make Mother’s Day special for some of the organization’s first responders. On May 10 at 9 a.m., Seubert was at Whole Foods with Lancaster EMS board member Dick Moriarty to pick up bouquets of flowers. Each bouquet was paired with a prayer note and gift card donated by members of Worship Center, and then the flowers were delivered to the Lancaster EMS station located at 1829 Lincoln Highway, where some of the staff members who are mothers and were working that day. Sarah Adams, of Lititz, was 16 weeks pregnant with her son, Davin, when she and her husband, Clark, received heartbreaking news in May 2018. “We found

out … that he had a rare terminal condition,” recalled Sarah, who noted that her son’s problems were caused by a genetic condition called Noonan’s syndrome. Neither she nor her husband carries the gene for the condition. In the face of the news, both Sarah and Clark turned to their faith. “We know God can heal, but we know He doesn’t always heal,” said Sarah. “Every week that (Davin) was living and growing and sick, (we thought), ‘Let’s see if we can get further.’” Sarah said the situation taught her how to live in the moment. “I coped by enjoying the time we had, so we had a gender reveal party and a baby shower,” said Sarah, who noted that she has a number of photos from throughout her pregnancy. Operating a business is a strenuous venture in the best of circumstances, and with the current economic climate, local entrepreneurs are being strained and stretched even more. But that hasn’t stopped some tenacious Lancaster County residents from pushing forward with new or expanding businesses. LaundrE-town on Market in Elizabethtown is one such emerging endeavor. After over a year of renovation and progress, the fully renovated, modern laundromat was slated for an April 1 grand opening, but state mandates and closures postponed the final stages of completion. The essential business eventually opened successfully on May 1. See Emerging Businesses pg 4

Fairmount Resident Shares Family History By Ann Mead Ash

Four years before C.J. Kurtz of Morgantown (affectionately known as

“Pop”) died in 1999, he had asked his son Paul Kurtz, now a Fairmount resident, to promise to write a book based on his red notebook, which contained details of the family history. Paul spent five years researching the family genealogy and history his father had recorded, but he still was not sure the information would make a good story. Instead of giving up, Paul took a hard look at who his father was. “Pop’s life is like a puzzle, and I am putting the pieces together,” said Paul, who began to see purpose in the work as he wrote the narrative. “Pop and Mom (Elsie Kurtz) always put family first,” he said, adding that the family story is one of continuing to move forward in unity. “It is a story of See Family History pg 10

Paul Kurtz, author of “Plow, Pulpit, People: We Called Him Pop,” introduced his book via a multimedia presentation to a gathering of about 20 people in the Crest View Gathering Room on the east side of the Fairmount campus on March 10.

Lancaster EMS from pg 1 G E R N E ’ S W Seubert explained that Lancaster EMS staff members work 12-hour shifts. She identified staffers working on Mother’s Day who are mothers. The mothers working at the 6-1 East Lampeter Station were Jess W., a lieutenant and paramedic; Amanda M., a captain and paramedic; and Jess C., in the communications center. Paramedic Vickie M. worked that day at the 6-3 Columbia Avenue Station. EMT Megan H. worked at the 56-12 Willow Valley Station, while paramedic Lee Ann H. worked at the 56-4 Buck station. EMT Lynda L. and EMT Lisa R. worked at the 56-5 Quarryville station, and EMT Joellen P. worked at the 56-6 Strasburg station. Worship Center global and local outreach pastor Chris Lautsbaugh said that the church has been specifically looking for ways to assist people and organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lautsbaugh said that a member of the church who is a first responder was able to help connect the church with emergency medical personnel who were

quarantined and in need of meals. The church also developed a COVID-19 Fund that has been used to help food pantries and other providers such as Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and Blessings of Hope. “Through a series of events, we were connected with Lancaster EMS,” said Lautsbaugh, who added that because the EMS staff members are frontline workers, church representatives felt a desire to support them. Lautsbaugh noted that support includes prayer, pastoral and/or chaplain care should it be requested, and practical ways the church could be there for the EMTs and their families. “They have been embracing us,” said Seubert. “They said, ‘Let’s give some flowers.’” Nathan Copson, store manager at the Lancaster Whole Foods location, said that Whole Foods Market is committed to supporting local communities. “I’m glad that we have a chance to help celebrate the hard-working mothers of Lancaster EMS

and show our appreciation for their service,” he noted. Lautsbaugh pointed out he is glad Lancaster EMS staff members, who are frontline heroes, can experience a sense of support from Worship Center. “We would love to be able serve all frontline workers, but since that is not possible, this gives us a way to do for some what we wish we could do for all,” Lautsbaugh said. Lancaster EMS serves most of southern Lancaster County as well as some of the eastern and western parts of the county. It has a fleet of 45 vehicles operating from 11 locations. In addition to emergency medical care, Lancaster EMS also provides non-emergency medical transport services, emergency medical technician and paramedic education, public health care and education programs, community paramedics, medical standby coverage at special events, and tactical paramedics to the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. Lancaster EMS serves more than 260,000 residents in 21 municipalities encompassing urban, suburban, and rural portions of Lancaster County.

Good Samaritan Services partnered with eight Phoenixville restaurants and seven Ephrata restaurants for Good Sam Restaurant Week, which was held from May 11 to 18. Prior to COVID-19, many individuals and groups would cook meals on-site at Good Samaritan shelters or deliver homemade meals. These practices are no longer allowed due to social distancing regulations, but many supporters have been delivering takeout meals to shelter facilities. During Good Sam Restaurant Week, supporters were encouraged to purchase takeout from local restaurants and have it delivered to the organization’s shelters. Restaurants providing takeout were featured to encourage donors and individuals to support their local economy while providing meals to participants in local shelters. Community members are invited to continue purchasing takeout from local restaurants

On Aug. 1, 2018, Sarah noticed she did not feel Davin moving as often as usual. “We went to the doctor, and they did an ultrasound, said Sarah. “There was no heartbeat. The condition had caused Davin to have hydrops - a fluid buildup in areas of the body - that was too hard on the baby’s heart. Sarah’s body was swelling as well from the excess fluid. A vertical C-section was scheduled for Aug. 2. When Sarah was being prepped for the surgery, she asked one of the attending medical professionals how long she would be allowed to hold her son. “She said, ‘As long as you are here,’ recalled Sarah, who knew she would be in bed in the hospital for four days. Following the surgery, her son was wrapped in blankets and brought to her. “It was great to meet him, even though he wasn’t there in spirit, because there was the connection

The Lititz venue will have ties to as well as distinctions from the flagship taproom in Ephrata. “We plan to feature our beer, handpicked Pennsylvania wine and spirits, and a menu featuring locally sourced, housesmoked, and house-roasted ingredients,” described Dain Shirey, co-owner of both establishments. Though the original plans had aimed at a May debut of Tied House, mandated closures have delayed the grand opening. With state regulations and uncertainty continuing to interrupt forward motion, the Tied House team will consider opening under a limited to-go menu, a small taste of what is to come. “We’d like the community to know we are thinking about them and miss our normal interactions at the taproom,” explained Shirey. “They can still purchase

“We started construction sometime around September of 2019 and faced many challenges,” explained company president Gretchen Rothstein. “Fast forward to March 20 when the stay-at-home order began, we were just about at completion.” Boasting 10 front load washers, including two extra-capacity units, 10 gas-powered dryers, complimentary WiFi, a television, and change and vending machines, the startup hopes to meet a need for downtown Elizabethtown in a fresh, state-of-the-art facility. The May 1 launch served to unveil only part of what Rothstein hopes to offer in the future. Such offerings may include a “wash, dry, and fold service.” While most businesses are seeking ways to stay afloat in spite of the pandemic, Hush Money Bikes of Lancaster is an enterprise that emerged to provide solutions in the midst of this unusual season. The cycle shop on North Prince Street in Lancaster city embraces a mission “to build community through personalized bicycle sales and service.” It was already in the planning stages in 2019, but the final impetus to make the company a reality came after the crisis struck. “The governor declared that bicycle repair was an essential service, but many local bicycle shops had already closed,” explained Ted Houser, one of three founding partners alongside Nathan Baker and Chris Caldwell. “Cyclists who relied on their bicycles for transportation started calling our personal phones for assistance. At that point we realized that we were in a position to help.” The ambitious trio had already laid the groundwork and was poised to spring into action when the need arose. “We met regularly with a SCORE mentor who helped us to develop a business plan and a budget for the shop,” Houser detailed. “We quickly adapted our plan for these uncertain times and stepped forward to support cyclists.” SCORE, a nonprofit association of business counselors with a mission to support small businesses, has approximately 80 volunteers working with clients in the Lancaster and Lebanon areas. During unprecedented closures, SCORE has played a vital role in the health of both existing and new small business ventures. “We have been helping our clients to navigate federal, state, and local loan and unemployment programs,” explained certified SCORE mentor Joann Brayman. “We are engaging our clients to evaluate their business models to see what will work under the emerging guidelines for reopening businesses. In many cases they will be looking at new safety measures, new types of products, or even new

Patient First, 1625 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, has begun drive-up COVID-19 testing by appointment as of May 14. It is the second Patient First center to offer testing in the central Pennsylvania area. Patient First also offers COVID-19 testing at its center on Jonestown Road in Harrisburg, which may contacted by calling 717-943-1566. All Patient First Medical Centers, including the designated testing centers, remain open on a walk-in basis daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for patients who have an urgent need for medical or injury care. Appointments for testing are made by calling a designated testing center. Patients are asked about symptoms and risk factors to determine whether they meet screening criteria based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To qualify, patients must have at least one of three specific symptoms - coughing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing or they must have at least two of the following symptoms: fever, chills, sore throat, fatigue, body aches or muscle pain, headache, nausea and/or vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or loss of smell and/or taste. Also eligible are those who are health care workers or first responders; those who had prolonged contact with such as living or working closely with - a COVID-19 positive person or a person waiting for COVID-19 test results; those who reside in a nursing home or other congregate living facility; those who are cancer patients who require COVID-19 testing before beginning or resuming

treatment; those who are required by their doctor, hospital, or outpatient surgical center to have COVID-19 testing prior to a planned surgery; or those who are required by their employer to have COVID-19 testing prior to beginning or returning to work. Testing is scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 6 p.m. All test samples are collected outside of the center. Patients may remain in their vehicles through the entire process. The staff member collecting samples is equipped with proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including an N95 mask, gloves, eye protection, and a gown. Samples are sent to a third-party reference lab for testing. Results are generally available in approximately two to five days and accessible on Patient First’s Patient Portal. If patients do not already have a Patient First Portal Account set up, they will receive a temporary code allowing them to create one when they arrive for testing. For most insured patients, there is no

out-of-pocket expense for COVID-19 testing. The visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. For self-pay patients, there is a set cost plus a separate bill from the lab in some cases. The lab determines what, if anything, it bills the patient. Appointments are not needed for visits unrelated to COVID-19 testing. All Patient First centers have taken steps to provide a safe environment for patients and staff, including requiring all patients and staff to wear masks while inside the center, thoroughly disinfecting surfaces throughout the center at regular intervals, requiring frequent handwashing, and limiting visitors to only essential family members. To schedule an appointment at the Lancaster center, readers may call 717925-2995. Updates about testing sites, instructions for making an appointment, and other information are available at www.patientfirst.com/covid-19 -testing.

The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition will hold a virtual meeting via Zoom on Thursday, May 28, from noon to 1 p.m. The event is a community educational meeting, and everyone is welcome. Individuals must have video or phone connection to attend. Mental Health America of Lancaster County educators Lois Walters and Dennis Walters will present “How to Balance Caring for Our Wounded While Caring for Ourselves. To learn more, readers may visit www.stopsuicidelancaster.org. The training will help attendees identify warning signs of suicide as well as address simple methods of communicating to hurting individuals and de-escalating heated situations. Additionally, crisis situations or critical incidents can occur within the community, requiring a plan of action to handle such situations, especially during social distancing. Steps toward self-care and resiliency will be emphasized along with a review of community resources. Also, attendees will be encouraged to share their concerns with a panel of experts in the suicide prevention field. The presentation will cater to church pastors, clergy and staff for crisis management of potential critical situations in the church; however, anyone who experiences frequent demands for support and services is welcome to attend. While stages at local theaters across the Susquehanna Valley remain dark, Broadway actor Adam Pascal has added his voice in support of Lancaster’s Prima Theatre, of which he is a veteran guest artist. Singing the anthem “Seasons of Love” from “Rent,” Pascal recorded an exclusive video from his home in California, asking viewers to donate to the theater’s Hero Fund. The video can be seen on Prima Theatre’s Facebook page and at http://primalancaster.org/hero. Americans for the Arts estimates an economic impact related to arts and culture organizations at more than $4.5 billion across the United States. Locally, Prima Theatre responded by producing AtHome streaming content to benefit the theater and out-of-work theater artists. Prima has announced the Hero Fund, sharing the opportunity to help the organization until it reopens. The theater is also providing benefits to those who donate to the Hero Fund, including an on-stage toast with the cast of its fall show “Motherhood: The Musical.” Pascal has had leading roles in “Rent,” “Aida,” “Memphis,” “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” “Disaster!,” “Something’s Rotten,” and “Chess.” In 1996, Pascal landed the role of Roger Davis in the original cast of “Rent,” for which he won Drama League and Obie awards. In addition to his theater credits, Pascal has toured internationally, as well as recorded numerous solo albums. Founded in 2010, Prima played in more than 15 venues until taking residency in its own theater in late 2018. The venue offers free parking and state-ofthe-art lighting and audio. Prima presents boutique musicals and concerts and hosts special events. In addition to Adam Pascal, Prima’s Broadway guest artists have included Stephen Schwartz, Billy Porter, Alice Ripley, Jason Robert Brown, and Shoshana Bean.

overcoming difficulty,â€? he shared. On March 10, just six days before the Fairmount campus closed to outside visitors, Paul held a book signing where he introduced “Plow, Pulpit, People: We Called Him Popâ€? to a gathering of about 20 people in the Crest View Gathering Room on the east side of the Fairmount campus. Paul opened the multimedia presentation with a recording of his uncles singing, “Brothers five still alive, let us tell our story ‌ as we blend these melodies singing to His glory.â€? Pop was born in 1901 near Morgantown. He married Elsie in 1923, and they operated a farm in the Elverson and Morgantown area. In 1931, Pop was ordained as a minister at the Conestoga Amish Mennonite Church. In 1972, he was elected vice chairman of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, where his historical interests flourished. In 1993, he received a certificate of appreciation from the Mennonite Historical Society of Goshen, Ind., for his historical efforts among Amish Mennonites of the Elverson and

Morgantown area. During the presentation, Paul discussed family roots going back to Adam Kurtz, lived in Switzerland but moved his family to Germany in 1671 after becoming an Anabaptist. Paul described the persecution of the Anabaptists in Switzerland, noting that they could not own land, but that the government allowed them to farm wasteland, where the Anabaptists developed techniques that made the land more fertile. Four of Adam’s descendants came to America in 1742. “They had accumulated some wealth and were able to buy farms and help other Amish coming over (to America), noted Paul. The four brothers were Hans Kurtz, who lived in Womelsdorf; Stephen Kurtz, who settled in Myerstown: Jacob Kurtz, who lived near the location of Oregon Dairy today; and Abraham Kurtz, who lived near the intersection of Peters Road and New Holland Road in New Holland. “Pop’s father was Jacob, explained Paul. Paul recalled that two days before his parents made the final payment on their

farm mortgage, they took the children in their 1937 DeSoto to a town in Maryland, where his father conducted a service in a retirement home. After the service while waiting to eat, they heard Franklin Roosevelt on the radio. “The Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor, said Paul. “That changed life. Paul also shared the story of Christian Esh, who came to be known as C.D. Esh. C.D.’s father and stepmother were killed in a buggy accident on their way to the Lancaster Farmers Market on a Saturday in the late 1890s when C.D. was only 7.

The boy went to live with his relatives in the Morgantown area. He later attended Goshen College and medical school. “He became a missionary doctor to India, explained Paul, noting that C.D. worked with lepers and built a hospital in India, returning to the states several times to report on his work and raise awareness and funds for missions in India. Individuals who have questions about the book may call 717-808-7785 or email psku04@ptd.net. Fairmount is a nonprofit Life Plan community located at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. Feed The Need Fundraiser To Benefit Water Street Mission The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the cancellation or postponement of many annual events and activities, including the annual Feed the Need food drive. Organized by the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy and typically held in April of each year, the food drive has donated more than 16,000 pounds of food to Water Street Mission (WSM) over the past five years. Due to concerns of germ transmission, event organizers canceled the annual collection in 2020.

However, in light of the increased need due to so many community members being out of work, organizers of the annual event strived to find another way. They have decided to go virtual with the event during the month of May, raising much-needed funds for the community nonprofit. Event organizers have a goal to raise $4,000 for WSM during the month of May. Brian and Amy Hartz, owners of HARTZ Physical Therapy, will start the fundraising

with a guaranteed donation of $1,000 and have agreed to match up to $1,500 of additional funds from community donations for the cause. Therefore, only $1,500 of community donations will ensure a maximum impact to WSM
