CVHS Prepares For Commencement Exercises By Ann Mead Ash
When more than 320 members of the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) Class of 2019 graduate at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, Jenna Erb and Aviona Saunders will be prepared to address the classmates, family, and school staff members gathered for the ceremony. Both speakers were selected by audition. Erb, daughter of Steve and Deb Erb of Lancaster, said that her speech will examine the growth that can accompany a time of failure. “Failure can build and challenge us,” said Erb. “When we get back up, we can chase after more opportunities.” Erb noted that those who have struggled can use what they have learned to be supportive of others. “(My speech) will focus on not only challenging yourself, but giving yourself a
break and understanding your limits so you can best serve others,” she shared. At CVHS, Erb has served as president of National Honor Society and as a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society. Erb is also a member of Student Council and the FOCUS Christian group leadership team. She has participated in drama performances and several vocal ensembles throughout her high school career. In the fall, Erb plans to attend Lancaster Bible College to study clinical mental health counseling, along with biblical studies. She plans to eventually pursue a master’s degree with plans to become a licensed counselor. Saunders, daughter of Nicole Saunders of Leola, said that her speech will focus on how past experiences and changes do not have to determine one’s future. “Just because you have gone through changes … you don’t have to let them set you back,” said Saunders. According to Samuel Mwangi, a licensed addictions counselor, all addictions are centered in the brain of an individual. “It’s about stimulation of the brain, and it’s a matter of learning different skills for each person depending on their situation,” said Mwangi. “Drugs (of choice) come into play from a physiological perspective, but we (at CCARS) deal with addiction as a whole.” Mwangi is the lead counselor at CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and See CCARS pg 6

Heritage Day Moves Across Campus By Ann Mead Ash
When Fairmount holds its 15th annual Heritage Day on Saturday, June 1, the change from the last event will be obvious to attendees. “We are across the street this year,” explained Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount. Fairmount will hold the 2019 Heritage Day celebration at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, rather than at the former location because that ground is now the site of the 45-unit Wheat Ridge apartment building, which is still under

A petting zoo, plenty of food, and antique cars and tractors will be featured at the 15th annual Heritage Day, which will be held at Fairmount on June 1. This year’s event will take place at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, because the previous location is currently under construction. The day will begin at 6:30 a.m. with a breakfast of eggs, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, and orange juice. Homemade doughnuts will also be available. Heritage Day will conclude at 3 p.m. Area history, shared by well-known storytellers, is always an important part of the event. For 2019, three storytellers will appear in the Speakers Tent. Henry Benner will talk about “Early Farming Methods in Lancaster County” at 9 a.m. Alvin Hoover will talk about “Communion Practices: Past and Present” at 10 a.m., and Ken Sensenig will talk about “Casting Lots, for Good and for Ill” at 1:45 p.m. More local history will be presented in an exhibit at the Muddy Creek Farm Library, located on the Fairmount campus. The display tells the story of the migration of the Palatinate Mennonites who arrived in the Pequea region of Lancaster County in 1710. Self-guided tours will be available until 3:45 p.m. Farm machinery, including antique balers and hit-and-miss engines, will be demonstrated during Heritage Day. The dynamometer, which measures the accuracy of horsepower, will be on-site again this year from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The device will be available to test tractors. The annual tractor procession will be held at about 2:30 p.m. The silent auction, which is overseen by Kent and Rita Richard, will end at noon in the Speakers Tent. Passage noted that last year’s auction included about 100 items. Flavors associated with Lancaster County are traditionally part of Heritage Day. Passage noted that more than 100 fresh strawberry pies will be made for the event. Pork barbecue sandwiches, soft pretzels, fresh-cut french fries, and ice cream made with hit-and-miss engines will also be among the fare available for purchase. Heritage Day raises money for the Sharing Fund to help support Fairmount residents who have exhausted their financial resources. Passage said that he hopes this year’s event will raise more than $25,000 for the fund. Although Heritage Day does raise money for the Sharing Fund, Passage emphasized that the event is more about bringing area residents together to remember and appreciate the past and socialize. “This is more of a community

volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with an opportunity to climb. Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.”
Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Lancaster County Senior Games, readers may visit www.LancSeniorGames.org.

The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the recordbreaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Golf Course, and Rocky Springs Lanes. Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been

After high school, Saunders plans to attend East Stroudsburg University to study nursing, with the goal of becoming a surgical nurse. Both young women noted that they were thankful for the opportunity to attend CVHS. “I am really grateful for the relationships I have built with
students and teachers,” shared Erb, who added that she has relied on those relationships to challenge her and shape her character. “I will miss them, but I will remember them for many years to come,” she said. Saunders agreed, noting that staying in one school district can help give a student a firm foundation. “You build relationships, and for those who have (difficulties outside school), those relationships can be key,” she noted.

JM Lapp Plumbing and Heating will host an open house for its customers and the community on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its new, larger facility at 330 E. Main St., New Holland. During the open house, visitors will be able to meet the JM Lapp team along with multiple vendors and factory representatives. There will be free refreshments, door prizes and a 10% discount on all in-stock parts and supplies in the retail store. Tours of the updated facility will be available throughout the day. In late December 2018, JM Lapp moved its operations from a 9,000square-foot facility in Bird-in-Hand to the former Skip’s Cutting property in New Holland. The 6.7-acre site formerly had a 150,000-square-foot building that was in disrepair after being empty for more than 10 years. The majority of the building was demolished in June 2018. Today, two separate buildings remain with approximately 47,000 square feet of space combined. JM Lapp occupies the 20,000-square-foot building at the east end of the property while the two-story
building along Brimmer Avenue is still under construction and will eventually be available for lease later this year. JM Lapp majority owner Matt Lapp started the business in 2006 with a Chevy Astro van while based in Intercourse. As the business grew, JM Lapp moved to three different locations from 2008 through 2013 before relocating to Bird-in-Hand. Within five years, the company outgrew that space as well. The new location allows for future expansion as needed. JM Lapp Plumbing and Heating specializes in residential and light commercial plumbing and HVAC installations and service. Water treatment and central vacuum systems are also available. The company also has a wide variety of parts and supplies available for sale. According to warehouse manager Reuben King, the company currently has 18 trucks on the road and 38 employees. The office and retail store are open on Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, readers may call 717-768-0484 or visit www.jmlapp plumbing.com.

handicapped-accessible facility. In September 2018, about 18 months after Mwangi first asked the question, the church body gave its final approval for the office to open. Cassel noted that CCARS plans to offer counseling and support groups for families and for issues related to addiction as well. “Addiction is just the primary diagnosis,” explained Mwangi. “Once people enter treatment, they may have marriage or other issues, and we can address the family needs and parenting issues as well.” Mwangi noted that anger management treatment will also be available. “A long line of emotional issues are tied to addiction,” he said. Cassel is encouraged to see the area churches coming together to fight the problem of addiction. “This shows the community that Christian churches can work together and function well,” he said, adding that the Conestoga Valley Ministerium has been supportive of the effort to establish CCARS. By the middle of April, CCARS had done 11 assessments and was treating 10 patients. Mwangi hopes to have his wife, Gladys, who is also a licensed counselor, join him with a client caseload in the future. To ensure best practices, CCARS is supervised by Dr. David Byler. According to Conestoga COB pastor Jere Cassel, housing the CCARS office in the church is a ministry opportunity he had been on the lookout for since arriving at the church in 2013. “In 2017, we had our first addiction workshop at the church, and that went really well,” said Cassel, referring to a two-part workshop titled “Heroin Epidemic - It’s in Your Community. It’s in Your Congregation.” “The congregation seemed to really appreciate their facility being used (in that way),” Cassel noted. More forums were held with different speakers, including Mwangi. “In the process, Samuel said, ‘Wouldn’t it be good to have a licensed addiction counselor in this area?’” recalled Cassel, who added that the church had space available in a

“They played with hustle and intensity the entire game, praised head coach Mike Chadwick. “This team needs to remember how far they have come in a few short years; to make districts was a great accomplishment. Lead scorer and sophomore, Abigail Morley collected a hat trick of goals in the effort, and Allyson Andrews knocked in the fourth CV successful attack. Reflecting back on the season efforts, the team can take pride in not only their skills improvement, but the difference they’ve made on a larger scale. “These girls raised over six hundred dollars for charity and included Team Owen as part of the CV girls’ lacrosse family, reflected Chadwick. “They are helping others, and I hope they remember the memories and relationships they have built over the season.

“Cause For Paws” Will Support UDS Service Dogs Jerry Murphy. The puppy is slated to be part of the BARKS (Benefit, Assist, Rehabilitated, Knowledge, and Service) program at CI Moshannon Valley, a federal incarceration facility. There, he will be cared for and trained by inmates, and UDS Service Dogs staff members will visit and receive reports. When Murphy returns at age 1, he will be assessed for physical condition and ability. If he is of a good size, he may be used to assist an individual with balance, Breece said. If he has any health quirks, Murphy will be trained as a facility dog. The cost to train a service dog is approximately $25,000 over two years. Ideally, sponsors are found to cover large chunks of the costs. Going forward, however, Breece wants to offer sponsorships for the smaller things that the Cause for Paws supports. A dozen puppies are brought into the program each year, and they need food bowls, leashes and collars, food, treats, and three vests each year as they grow. Veterinary care for the animals includes spay/neuter surgeries, checkups, and medication for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. “We’re always looking for new sponsors and volunteers,” Breece said.

“People love puppies,” remarked Lori Breece, UDS Service Dogs program manager. Breece hopes that a love for puppies, dogs in general, and service dogs in particular will inspire many people to participate in Cause for Paws, a 5K Fun Run, Walk, and Wheelchair Roll that will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 8 a.m. at HACC Central Pennsylvania’s Community College - Lancaster Campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. “We are determining whether we will continue holding the event,” Breece said, noting that a successful event would have 200 entrants. “We’re looking at other opportunities (for fundraising).” Cause for Paws has been designed to appeal to people with a range of abilities. The entire course is paved, and because it is located entirely on HACC’s campus on a weekend, there will be no traffic. “It’s good for families and safe,” Breece commented. Awards will be given to the people who complete the course the fastest, but there will be other activities available that morning. A Zumba warm-up will be offered at 7:30 a.m. Face painting will be available, and a magician will make balloon animals. New this year, children in kindergarten through grade five will be able to test their agility on a course that will include ladder drills,
over/under, hula hoops, cone weaves, tunnels, and a 50-yard dash. The agility course will open at 10 a.m. There is a cost to participate, and prizes will be awarded. Dogs will be welcome at Cause for Paws. All canines must always be leashed, have excellent temperament with other dogs and children, and be current on their rabies and distemper vaccines. Cleanup and water stations will be provided. Attendees will be able to meet the new ambassador dog, Nova, and her owner, Jennifer King. Beginning in July, the pair will venture into the community twice a week to introduce folks to UDS Service Dogs and recruit clients and sponsors. King and Nova will be available for lunch-and-learn events, presentations, and other interactions. “We’re trying to put ourselves out in the community more,” Breece explained. “That will help us build our mobility client list.” UDS Service Dogs is primarily in the business of providing trained canines for people with mobility disabilities and autism, Breece said. “The facility dog list is really growing,” added program coordinator Kristy Smith. Currently, 24 puppies and young dogs are in training to serve an individual or to serve in schools or retirement homes. One of the most recent to enter the program is Murphy, a 9-week-old black Labrador who was named in memory of the late radio personality

Emig is a Vietnam-era veteran, with a combined 30 years of service, including 11 years of active duty in the Army followed by another 19 years in the Army Reserve and National Guard. Matthew Mercer Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH) eighth-grader Matthew Mercer recently earned first place in the Pennsylvania competition of the fall 2018 Middle School Level of the InvestWrite national writing competition. In his essay, Matt addressed sustainable investing, looking at environmental, social, and governance factors in relation to the investment process. InvestWrite, a national writing competition, is a program of the SIFMA Foundation offered exclusively to teachers and students participating in The Stock Market Game. InvestWrite builds a bridge between classroom learning and the real world as it complements The Stock Market Game’s learning experience and integrates across all subjects throughout the curriculum. Matt, along with his family and teacher, Ann DiNovis, have been invited to attend the Eastern Region Awards Luncheon to be held on Thursday, May 23, at Cabrini University in Radnor, where Matt will be recognized for his achievement. Matt was also part of the team winning first place in both the region and the state of the Fall Middle School Level Stock Market Game. He, along with team members Eddie Dresch and Daniel Titi, will also be recognized for this achievement at the awards luncheon. “Even after all these years, it blows my mind: Two people walk into that birth room, and three people come out, marveled Catherine Saunders, executive co-director with Maren Ketcham of Birth Care & Family Health Services. “It’s an amazing experience to help clients make that journey to parenthood. Birth Care celebrated its 40th year in 2018, making it the longest continually operating freestanding birth center in the United States, according to founder Rita Rhoads Reed, looking at the records of the members of the American Association of Birth Centers. In those four decades, Birth Care’s certified nurse-midwives have welcomed more than 9,000 babies into the world. In 2018, Birth Care’s clients delivered 501 babies, including two sets of twins. “We’re delivering the grandchildren of our earliest moms, Saunders remarked. Birth Care’s certified nurse-midwives have office hours in Bart and Gordonville, deliver babies at the licensed and accredited birth center in Bart, and attend births at WellSpan Ephrata Hospital. One of the hallmarks of Birth Care is its commitment to making personalized care to mothers and new babies available regardless of ability to pay. Between 75 and 80 percent of Birth Care’s clients are uninsured. “I think that’s an important thing for people to know, Ketcham said, noting that Birth Care offers a sliding fee scale based on clients’ financial condition. The board of directors also forgives the bills of families in dire need. To subsidize the discounts, Birth Care hosts an annual benefit sale on Memorial Day weekend. This year, the sale will be held on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bart Fire Company, 11 Furnace Road, Quarryville. The preview will open at 8:30 a.m., with coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and doughnuts available for purchase. Reed and the members of the sale committee have collected a variety of items for the auction, and more have been pledged. “Merchants are very supportive in this community, Saunders said. Salegoers may expect to see quilts and comforters, crafts, plants, garden items, a child’s picnic table, a rabbit hutch, a shed, lots of gift certificates, a giant glass jar partly filled with buttons, a brand-new lawn mower, hanging baskets, antiques, and more. “There will still be a lot of surprises that people will give us, Ketcham commented. At noon, drawings for themed baskets will take place. The drawings are a popular feature of the benefit sale, and entrants must be present to win. When attendees are hungry, there will be a number of foods to choose from, such as chicken barbecue, subs, cheesesteaks, fried shrimp, hot dogs, and burgers. Side
and dessert offerings will include soup, fries, hand-rolled soft pretzels, soft-serve ice cream, fresh fruit, and freshly squeezed lemonade. A separate stand will sell individually priced candy. A few years ago, Birth Care added a Family Fun Day element to the benefit sale. Barrel train rides, mechanical bull rides, a bounce house, and an inflatable obstacle course will be available for youngsters to enjoy free of charge. The activities will be supervised by qualified individuals so parents will be free to participate in the auctions, Saunders said. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis on the Family Fun Day, Ketcham said. “Yes, we want to make money, but we want to give back to the families we serve, Saunders added. When Manheim Township Education Foundation (MTEF) board member Julie Belser discussed her hopes for the first Red, White, and Blue Streaks 5K and Fun Run last year, she noted that the organization sought to create a positive community event that would bring families together at the school. The 2018 event fulfilled those dreams. “It went so smoothly last year,” noted Belser. “There was a light drizzle, but it stopped. It was cool and perfect running weather.” In addition to the cooperative weather, another highlight of the event was the group of Landis Run Intermediate School teachers and staff who participated dressed in festive garb. “(They) were decked out in patriotic wear and tutus and just brought (the event) to life,” said Belser. This year’s Red, White, and Blue Streaks 5K and Fun Run will start in the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) stadium, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, on Monday, May 27, which is Memorial Day. Day-of registration for the run will begin at 8 a.m. The run for children will be held at 9 a.m., and the 5K run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. As with last year’s event, the run will have a patriotic theme. Participants who
dress in patriotic gear will have their names entered to win a prize. A prize will also be awarded to the Manheim Township School District (MTSD) teacher who has the most students participating in the event. Veterans who attend will be recognized. “We have forms at each registration station to sign up any veterans who are present,” said Belser. “(Last year) we honored the veterans that were there that day, and it was nice to acknowledge them.” Awards will also be given to the top overall male and female finishers. A certificate and a medal will be given to the top three male and female finishers in eight age groups: 14 and under, 15 to 18, 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over. MTEF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides resources to support innovative ideas for projects that directly benefit MTSD students, enhance educational programs, and promote community involvement. The organization holds a yearly logo competition among all MTSD students in conjunction with the 5K race. The winning logo by Haley McCullough was used for this year’s event. “We had more than 100 entries from our logo competition for this year,” said Belser, who added that the competition is tied to the grants MTEF awards to teachers. A recent grant given to art teacher Matt Jones purchased styli that

The run for the children will not be timed, and every child who participates will receive a medal. A nominal fee will be charged to take part in the fun run. A food truck selling a variety of coffees and pastries will be on-site for those who wish to purchase breakfast items. To encourage participation by district employees, teachers and staff members may take part at no cost. The MTHS cheerleaders will be present to encourage racers.
The MTEF 5K route will follow a path similar to the one the MTHS cross-country team uses, but it will be adjusted due to construction on campus. Belser noted there will be rolling hills, but no hills that are especially challenging, and that part of the route will be on grass. Readers who wish to take part in the 5K may download a form from www.MTEF.net to mail to MTEF. For a nominal fee, runners may also register at www.pretzelcitysports.com. Registration will be discounted for MTSD students who take part. Individuals who have questions about the run may email administrator @mtef.net or call 717-735-1751.

Church at 7:30 a.m. From Bridgeville, the group will journey to Weaverland Mennonite Church at 7:45 a.m., Bowmansville Memorial Park at 8:15 a.m., and St. John’s Center Lutheran Church at 9 a.m. The group plans to arrive at Terre Hill Memorial Park at 9:15 a.m., followed by Voganville Cemetery at 10 a.m. The pilgrimage will continue to Groffdale Cemetery by 10:20 a.m. and Zeltenreich Reformed Church at 10:40 a.m. The group is scheduled to reach the Evangelical United Methodist Church in New Holland at 11:05 a.m. The final two ceremonies will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church at 11:20 a.m. and at St. Stephen Reformed Church at 11:30 a.m. The churches are located adjacent to each other in downtown New Holland. The group maintains the schedule with military efficiency. A firing squad, color guard, officers of the American Legion and VFW, and representatives of the New Holland Band march into each cemetery location for a short ceremony, held at the grave of the last veteran buried there, before marching back out and leaving for the next stop. If family members of that veteran are present, they will be given a geranium to place on the grave as part of the ceremony, which will involve rifle fire and the playing of taps. The veterans’ delegation will meet at 11:50 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial, located at the corner of East Jackson Street and South Kinzer Avenue, for a brief ceremony. At noon, the group will join the band in the park to hear a presentation. Preparation for the pilgrimage will begin prior to Memorial Day, when council volunteers will place 1,300 geraniums and American flags on the gravesites of veterans in the cemeteries. Members of the United Veterans Council would like to see more younger veterans involved in helping to preserve the tradition of the pilgrimage. Veterans who would like to participate may call Chet Gordon at 717-445-0104.
