Flag football just for fun

Wiedemer, who coordinates the Challenger Football and Cheerleading program for United Disability Services (UDS), can sum up the goal of the program in one sentence. “It’s a great way for kids with disabilities to meet other kids (with disabilities),” she said. Wiedemer, who took over the program in 2022, recalled the story of a young man who joined the flag football league last year. “In the beginning, the boy didn’t realize how active it was,” said Wiedemer. “He would play a few minutes and then sit down, but by the end of the season, he was playing the whole game.”

UDS Challenger Football and Cheerleading will hold games in the gym at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster,

on Saturdays from Aug. 5 through Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each session. No game will be held on Sept. 2, just prior to Labor Day.

Non-contact flag football is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 21. “We have volunteer coaches and buddies so each kid who needs one has a helper,” said Wiedemer. “Each kid gets to score, and each gets to kick, and we don’t keep track of the score.”

Cheerleading is open to boys and girls of any age. Coach Sophon Bowman works with the team members on cheers, and they cheer for the flag football teams and then perform during a break between games and at the end of the game. Wiedemer has

connected with the World Cup Jupiter special needs cheering team, which practices at Spooky Nook, for a visit with the Challenger team. “The (World Cup Jupiter cheerleaders) will come and do their routine,” said Wiedemer, who is also working to bring the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders to a game to do a clinic with the cheer team.

“I try to have guests each week,” said Wiedemer, who is also in touch with an internationally known magician from Philadelphia about a guest appearance.

Wiedemer first got involved in the program about seven years ago, noting that she and her husband had often talked about doing this

type of volunteer work. She said that 10 volunteers per game are needed for a successful program.

Individuals who wish to volunteer may email teresaw@udsfoundation.org or call 717-715-8775.

There is no cost for individuals with disabilities to take part in Challenger football or cheerleading. Registration is now open at www.udservices.org/Challenger. Those who register by Friday, June 9, will receive a free T-shirt. A parent or guardian must remain at Calvary with the participant throughout the program.

Wiedemer said in 2022, about 45 participants joined the program. This year, she would like to have 60 participants to have plenty of players for each team. Wiedemer noted that the program is open to participants from within and outside Lancaster County.

Lasagna Love delivers kindness

There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need. Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.

“We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”

Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.

“People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https:// lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”

Lasagna Love frompg 1

Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.

Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals.

Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program.

“Ninety-eight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did something for somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to partici-

pate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.

Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”

Fisher notches hat trick in loss to Township

At the beginning of each high school sports season, team’s layout their goals with all the normal things like improving from game to game or beating your rival, but two of the most important remain, making the playoffs and winning your final game.

The boys’ lacrosse team is on track to have the playoff berth covered, sitting in the 12th spot of a 12-team District 3-3A bracket. The winning your final game part was trickier with the Buckskins falling to Manheim Township by a 16-9 count on May 11th. That puts CV at 9-8 as they wait for the district power ranking deadline to confirm the postseason berth.

As for the Township loss, Soren Stoltzfus turned away 10 of the 32 shots he faced while taking the loss. Jeff Fisher added an assist to his hat trick while Isaiah Sensenig had one assist and two goals. Noah Nolt tacked on two scores while Tyson Zwaska and Hunter Silvaggio cleaned up the final two goals.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys’ volleyball team endured a similar stretch with a loss in their regular season finale forcing the Buckskins to play the waiting game. CV currently sits 11th, just inside the 14-team cut line with a tentative District 3-3A first round match up opposite Governor Mifflin.

As for the May 11th regular season finale, it was a 3-0 loss to Cedar Crest where the Falcons posted wins of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-18. Carson

Hoover finished with 11 kills, 11 digs and three blocks to lead CV in the loss. Rowan Aisenbrey matched Hoover’s 11 digs while Drew Hultstrand had 25 assists and Ethan Tardibuono one ace.

TRACK

The track and field teams made their annual trek to Landisville for the 2023 edition of the LancasterLebanon League Track and Field Championships. The result was a fifth-place finish for the Lady Buckskins and team title for the boys, who clipped Ephrata 86-69.5 in the team standings.

The Buckskins enjoyed nine podium finishes, highlighted by the victorious 400m relay team of Jayden Johnson, Andrew Hoffner, Zach Phy and Nick Tran. The quartet clocked a 43.21 to finish a mere 0.03 seconds ahead of Cedar Crest. Phy made two more trips to the medal stand, picking up another gold for his 39.17 in the 300 hurdles. Phy’s final medal came as part of the 1600m relay where Hoffner, Tran and Castronova joined for a third-place time of 3:27.92.

The Bucks added one more bronze medal to their haul thanks to David Irwin, Yonatanne Desta, Carson Miller and Timothy Gitonga and their 8:17.38 in the 3200m relay.

CV just missed placing three runners on the 400m podium with Hoffner finishing tenth, his 52.06 putting him 0.46 seconds off the podium. Castronova and Irwin did manage to make the podium with Castronova finishing fifth with a time of 51.33 and Irwin eighth thanks to his 51.60. Tran added a fifth place in the 100m to his

tally while both Jordan Sensenig and Caleb Malari worked their way to the 110 hurdles medal stand. Sensenig posted a 15.50 to finish fourth while Malari ended up eighth with a time of 15.82.

The Lady Buckskins were fronted by Brooke Denlinger with an assist from Alondra Ortiz. Denlinger went double gold, sweeping the hurdle

events with a 15.58 in the 100’s and a 46.31 in the 300’s. Ortiz also picked up two individual medals, taking fifth in the 100m (12.608) and just missing gold in the 200m with a 25.76, settling for second place. The pair made two podium trips together with Hallie Schnapf and Mae Lindor joining for a bronze run in the 400m relay while Belle Marie Alston and Ellie Hershey

joined for a fourth-place finish in the 1600m relay.

Lindor nabbed the final solo medal for the Lady Buckskins, finishing sixth in the 200m with a 26.44. CV’s final medal was their first with Alston, Megan Kime, Kylee Antrim and Seana Dougherty teaming up for a 10:03.47 in the 3200m relay, good enough for seventh place.

Revealing the roots of a family tree

For many people, family trees and historical records of ancestors provide a sense of connection to relatives and the journey their family has taken over decades. Despite the accessibility of information in the modern age, burial records and ancestral documents can prove to be elusive. Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer an Intro to Cemetery Research class to assist those searching for answers to questions posed in their family story.

The class will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 9:30

to 11:30 a.m., and it will be taught by local historian and genealogist James Landis. Landis will begin the course at the Mennonite Life library, where he will discuss a variety of resources that researchers can use in their efforts. “A lot of people don’t realize that the county has records of destitute veterans - federal documents that may be relevant to a cemetery but are not always readily available,” Landis said. Landis will discuss how to access burial records and cover a broad spectrum of methods for research. After discussion at the library, the class will visit a local cemetery, where

Landis will provide a demonstration on how to photograph tombstones and the best practices for investigating a family member’s resting place. “I want this course to give people a feel for what they’re going to encounter when going to cemeteries,” Landis said. “It’s such a diverse subject; there really isn’t one single approach.”

In his class, Landis will also discuss the benefits and disadvantages of conducting research online. Although there is a plethora of websites that offer information on burial sites, Landis said they are often incomplete and do not include valuable data that one might find when exploring in person. While a website might list a family member who is buried in a specific location, it likely won’t show a connection to relatives with a different surname who are buried nearby. Landis also noted that many resources for field research were heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; several historical societies were unable to remain open, driving genealogists to rely on the internet for information.

Landis has been a genealo-

At the age of 14, Landis saw a Revolutionary War re-enactment and was inspired to find information on his relatives who served in the war. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were all members of the Lancaster County Historical Society, and Landis has been involved with Mennonite Life since 1995. “In my years of research, my biggest sense of accomplishment was standing at the burial site of my ancestor and being able to claim them,” Landis said. “You need to use a good bit of shoe leather, but if you do, you will be rewarded.”

Spurrier earns honorable mention

Simeon Spurrier received an honorable mention for his essay in the annual Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. National Peace & Justice Ministries public policy essay contest. Spurrier is a 10thgrader at Lancaster Mennonite School in Lancaster. He will receive a cash prize.

In his essay, “Our Brokenness: An Essay Concerning the American Criminal Justice System,” Spurrier describes contributing factors to the current system of mass incarceration. In addition to changing mandatory minimum sentencing policies, Spurrier advocates for the use of restorative justice as a system that addresses underlying causes of harm and works through the trauma caused by crimes.

The MCC high school essay contest, which is in its 24th year, encourages youths to explore and understand national policy issues while reflecting on how their faith engages with advocacy. Public policy topics in this year’s contest included immigration, climate change, and mass incarceration.
