Celebrating EVERY Student CVHS Plans Memorable Events By Ann Mead Ash

“The goal is to not just replicate the excitement of a traditional graduation, but truly celebrate each and every graduate of the Class of 2020,” Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) superintendent Dave Zuilkoski wrote to students, families, and friends of Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) seniors in early May. Zuilkoski went on to outline plans for events that would “try to maintain as many traditions as possible,” while creating a memorable celebration for the Class of 2020. The district has kept the reservation of Calvary Church for Friday, May 29, but also prepared to present speeches and diplomas in ways that work within COVID-19 guidelines.

The alternative plans include recorded speeches by principal Michael Thornton, Class of 2020 president Simonne Legette, Jamie Glick, Sophia Steed, CVSD school board president Todd Shertzer, and Zuilkoski. Jamie and Sophia auditioned for the graduation speakers committee and were chosen to speak. In addition, the presentation to the Rill Medal of Honor winners and the acknowledgement of the class valedictorian and salutatorian, top 10% of the class, and students entering the military will also be recorded. Jamie is the daughter of Dean and Jeanie Glick of Lancaster. Jamie said that she is glad she attended CVHS because of the positive relationships she was able to develop there. “Not only (relationships) with my classmates, but with my teachers as well,” said Jamie, who recalled that she was excited to go

to school each morning knowing she would be welcomed with smiles and hellos from the teachers. “The teachers are always willing to help you in any way they can to make you successful,” she noted. “I would not be the person I am today without their guidance.” Her speech reads in part, “I have been a Buckskin my entire life, and I have been cheering you on through wins and losses. I’m here to cheer all of you on one last time.” In the fall, Jamie plans to attend the Penn State Berks, Division of Undergraduates. Sophia is the daughter of Jeff and Kathy Steed of Lancaster. Her time at CVHS has been enhanced by the connections she has made with others. “The school does a very good job at presenting students with plenty of opportunities to be involved and be successful,” said Sophia, who listed

Community Invited To “Adopt” A Senior As part of an effort to recognize and honor graduates at Conestoga Valley (CV) High School, the community is invited to “adopt” a senior and send them congratulatory yard signs, gift cards, candy and other special gifts. As of mid-May, 210 seniors had been adopted. “Currently there are 316 seniors, and that includes two exchange students, students graduating early, those that completed their course load after the first semester, students from the vo-tech programs and students from the cyber programs,” explained Tracy Holmes, whose daughter Kaitlin is among the graduates. Holmes heard about a similar effort to adopt seniors at a school in California. “I looked into it and I checked with (CV High School) and started the group on April 28,” she stated. “As the parent of a senior, I was struggling with the senior year ending so abruptly and seeing all the seniors struggling with it as well. I wanted to do something that could lift their spirits and show them that they were loved and supported by everyone See “Adopt” A Senior pg 3

In August of 2019, Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties and Good Samaritan Services parted ways. Bridge of Hope, a national organization that fights homelessness through community support efforts, made the decision to operate Bridge of Hope programs separately in both Lancaster and Chester counties. In Lancaster County, Audrey Metzler became the county director, moving into the organization’s new offices at 255 Butler Ave., Suite 205, Lancaster, in December. Metzler worked for Bridge of Hope for more than a decade, leaving her post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. In her new role, she will handle some case management and train and coordinate local volunteer groups through churches and other faith groups, such as Bible studies and small groups. “I will be recruiting and training Neighboring See Bridge Of Hope pg 4

Bailey Coach Disinfects First Responder Vehicles Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been

disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York, Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s first responders healthy due to the COVID19 pandemic. Bailey Coach is a transportation company which diversified in mid-March when 99% of its transportation reservations had been canceled. Now employees

travel to area life-sustaining businesses to provide disinfecting services. Staff members disinfect an average of 2.5 million square feet of space for 50 businesses each week, and on average, they are able to disinfect 15,000 square feet of space per hour with electrostatic sprayers.

Sierra Club Awards Grants The Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club has awarded “green project” grants to eight Lancaster County organizations, each of which has shown a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, ranging up to $500 and announced on Earth Day, April 22, a total of 52 Lancaster County organizations have received green project grants over the past five years. Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include Children’s Museum of Lancaster doing business as Hands-on House, purchasing plants for its Discovery Meadow and acquiring a potting shed with accessories; East Petersburg Sportsman’s Association, buying and delivering trees and creekside plants and shrubs to replace

dead, weak, or intrusive flora in its 11-acre preserve; and ELANCO Source Water Collaborative, developing a native plant pollinator garden along a community park’s wooded nature trail. Recipients also include Historic Poole Forge Inc., expanding and improving its recently developed quarter-acre pollinator garden; Homefields Incorporated, purchasing native vegetation and a weed wrench for use in its current rain garden and the proposed extension of it; Hope United Methodist Church, Ephrata, installing an informational sign along the Ephrata-to-Warwick rail trail to direct and encourage trail users to visit its nearby native plant meadow and monarch butterfly pollinator garden; K-Prep Learning Center, developing an outdoor classroom and organic learning garden for use by students and their

The proposals were evaluated on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group might be involved. Awarded once a year, the grants are funded primarily with money generated through the Lancaster Group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. YOUR SHOE & BOOT HEADQUARTERS Bridge Of Hope Volunteers from local churches and matching them up with families (facing homelessness),” said Metzler, who explained that groups help to support families who are on the brink of homelessness. She shared that responsibilities are often divided with designated positions, including a group coordinator, members who help find housing, a child care coordinator, and a transportation coordinator. According to Edith Yoder, national executive director of Bridge of Hope, the volunteer groups are referred to as neighborhoods of support. “There’s a case manager and six to 10 volunteers from a neighboring church,” said Yoder, who noted that the volunteer group members are encouraged to get to know the head of the family they will work with, often the mother, and then spend time with the family engaging in fun group activities. Bridge of Hope will provide case management and connections to area resources the family may need. Yoder noted that many volunteers are not aware of how valuable their help can be. “We are

really emphasizing that one of the gifts group members bring the families facing homelessness is social capital that they might not even know they have,” she said, explaining that social capital refers to connections within the community that can help meet the family’s specific needs. “Oftentimes Neighboring Volunteers don’t realize the assets they have access to because of who they know (in the area),” she noted. Both Metzler and Yoder told of instances when Neighboring Volunteers connected with dentists, mechanics, or others to provide services a family needed at little or no cost. One goal of Bridge of Hope is to move a family into housing within two months of entering the program. To reach that milestone, the organization partners with faith-based groups and landlords within a community. “We provide rental assistance on a decreasing basis,” explained Yoder. “We are looking for landlords who want to support families.” Metzler will be meeting with churches and other groups throughout the county to

encourage volunteers to connect with Bridge of Hope as the organization looks to increase the number of families in the area it serves. “Our vision is to have a church in each school district ready to jump in when a family (needs help),” said Yoder. “We are looking to engage (with) those who are looking to have a relational outreach opportunity.” She added, “Audrey often says that (Bridge of Hope) allows people to be the hands and feet of Christ.” Bridge of Hope’s gala luncheon fundraising event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. The keynote speaker will be Shannan Martin, author of “The Ministry of Ordinary Places.” “She is very engaging,” said Yoder. “Neighboring is her thing.” Doors for the luncheon will open at 10:30 a.m., and the luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. Readers who would like more information about Bridge of Hope or the gala may visit https://lancaster.bridge ofhopeinc.org.

in Lancaster is one of many schools in the county utilizing flexible instruction days during school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Flexible instruction days allow students to continue with classroom instruction at home. All their assignments are on a platform online where they can access them throughout the day. Teachers are available to help students with assignments and are teaching lessons via video conference calls. Students in kindergarten through third grade took home

assignments that will later be graded for accuracy and completion. Students in fourth through eighth grades received their daily assignments online and the assignments are graded once submitted. As a way to bring routine to the school’s students, principal Jeffrey Hughes and second-grade teacher Sister Kristen Forgotch have presented daily announcements and morning prayers to students virtually. Each morning, Hughes and Forgotch record themselves via Zoom reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, making daily announcements that include singing “Happy Birthday to students, and a morning prayer. Students, parents, guardians, and community members follow along on Resurrection’s Facebook page and YouTube account. Since 2005, Lancaster County residents have known Global Aid Network (GAiN) as more than a former fish hatchery. Over the decades, the 70,000-square-foot warehouse on Quarry Road in Mount Joy has become a place for volunteers to serve others as they prepare and pack humanitarian aid to go to people in more than 30 countries around the world. Recently GAiN in the United States, the humanitarian ministry of Cru, announced that the ministry changed its name to Unto.

United Way of Lancaster County has launched a new website called OneUnited Lancaster.com. This comprehensive digital source of information for the community works in tandem with United Way’s 211 resources to connect people and resources. The site brings voices from multiple agencies to individuals by providing daily updates of information. As part of OneUnitedLancaster.com, United Way has created a resource map for county-wide coronavirus-related services from food to housing to employment opportunities. The map is geographically based so people can quickly see where they may obtain what they need, when the site is open, and how to get there. The map is continuously updated. To update information or provide details about a new resource, readers may contact Audrey Lilley at lilley@ uwlanc.org. The content on OneUnitedLancaster.com is updated daily, with information and resources. Journalist Tim Stuhldreher compiles a list of pertinent local and national COVID-19 related news stories. The name change came after two years of research, planning and prayer. This change will allow the ministry to more clearly convey its pursuit to serve people by relieving suffering, restoring dignity and revealing the eternal hope of Jesus. Unto will remain steadfast in its commitment to accelerate spiritual movements through humanitarian kindness, which helps Cru and its partners gain access, build credibility and increase effectiveness in ministry.

Unto’s Mount Joy warehouse, known as the Global Logistics Center (GLC), is an integral part of serving more than 2 million people each year. Expressing kindness to people around the world requires a process for transporting humanitarian aid to field partners so they can serve people by meeting their physical needs. Unto’s staff members, with the assistance of volunteers at the GLC, process, pack and ship humanitarian supplies to people around the world.

effect on students, including high school seniors finalizing college plans. Moving the application deadline back a month will give prospective applicants more time amid all the uncertainty generated by this public health crisis. PPL’s environmental scholarship is geared toward students who possess passion for being a positive force for the environment. A key aspect of the scholarship application is a short essay that asks students to explain why they are interested in pursuing a career with environmental ties. Scholarships will be awarded in early July, rather than early June. PPL employees and members of their immediate families or households are not eligible for the scholarship. To learn more about the scholarship and view the application and rules, readers may visit www.ppl electric.com/scholarship. Launched jointly by the Lancaster County Community Foundation and United Way of Lancaster County, the fund will work through organizations that can turn donated dollars directly into help and provide food, housing and emerging critical needs for Lancaster residents. Dollars from Lancaster Cares are already at work through Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and LancCo MyHome. Each

The new remote learning series, called “Learn Outside, Learn at Home,” features videos of CBF’s professional educators discussing environmental science topics from around the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The online resources are carefully crafted to align with school curriculum and state learning standards. Each video is paired with an investigation for students to complete. Students can also explore nature journaling activities to document the environment around their homes and backyards. For adults restricted by stayat-home orders, CBF is creating

More than 850 Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG) members have been working to support commonwealth communities as they respond to the COVID-19 outbreak, according to Maj. Gen. Anthony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). He also assured veterans that they will continue to receive their benefits. The PNG was called early on to aid 30 Pennsylvania residents who were on the Grand Princess cruise ship by providing transportation back to their homes throughout the commonwealth after they arrived at Harrisburg International Airport in Middletown. As COVID-19 began making its way throughout Pennsylvania communities, the PNG did even more to protect and safeguard the health of citizens. These efforts include setting up a drive

-through testing site in Montgomery County; helping a food bank in Pittsburgh pack emergency food; unloading much-needed medical supplies in Harrisburg; and helping to create a federal medical facility at Glen Mills School in Delaware County. The DMVA Office of Veterans Affairs team will continue striving to make sure that Pennsylvania’s nearly 800,000 veterans receive the benefits they have earned through their service to the country. These benefits include care for 1,300 residents in six veterans homes; locating military records; providing financial assistance during unforeseen financial crises; and administering pension programs for those with serviceconnected disabilities. bank receipts showing deposits, tax returns and 1099 tax forms, bill notices to customers, statements from recent customers, business licenses, contracts, invoices and building leases. The new PUA system is separate from the regular unemployment compensation system. Claimants for PUA should only apply through the PUA Portal at the aforementioned website.

were decimated. To cope, people foraged what was left of gardens and root crops for food. Rivers and creeks have been used as water sources, but contamination from livestock has led to waterborne illnesses. “We’ve been eating what we can find on the ground, but that will soon be gone. I don’t know how we will survive,” a NiVan man speaking his native Bislama tongue told FIA missionary partners in the area. An estimated 80% to 90% of the villagers’ bamboo huts with grass-thatched roofs were destroyed. There is little to no palm leaf left, and it will take two to three years to regrow. With no income to buy building supplies, the people are in dire need of shelter. “Thirty to forty of us women and children packed into a larger hut while the wind was pulling at the roof and sides and rain pounded through. The men ran outside and stood around the hut to hold the roof on. I was scared we all would die,” shared a NiVan village woman,

While many local residents may be feeling the effects of staying home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friends in Action (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown, is offering an opportunity to have a global impact. Since 1992, FIA has used infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached people groups in extremely remote areas. On April 6, Cyclone Harold, a Category 5 cyclone and the second-largest storm in Vanuatu’s history, almost leveled the South Pacific island country. To the people in Vanuatu’s hundreds of NiVan villages, some of whom still wear leaves or traditional loincloths for clothing and survive on subsistence farming, the storm was catastrophic. Dense jungle was shredded into barren sticks, entire villages were wiped out, roads were destroyed by flooding, and mudslides and debris caused a delay in the efforts to account for hundreds of villagers. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for both farms and food banks. Farms have seen disruption in the food supply chain and food banks have seen an increase in demand for assistance. A new United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program is designed to address both concerns simultaneously. The Farmers to Families Food Box Program will procure fresh produce, dairy products, and meats like chicken and pork from domestic farms and box them to distribute to families in need through regional food banks and other food assistance organizations. The USDA program will

procure an estimated $100 million per month in fresh fruits and vegetables, $100 million per month in a variety of dairy products, and $100 million per month in meat products nationwide. Many farms have reported having to dump milk or eggs because the processing plants or packaging facilities cannot take them. The restaurants, hotels, and schools that used to buy the bulk products are closed. The funding for the food box program will compensate the farms and the food processors to package the products to distribute to families in need. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is poised to deliver the food

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced it received a $100,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to aid in its response to the COVID-19 crisis. The gift will be used to help meet the needs of food insecure residents of central Pennsylvania during the COVID-19 crisis. To feed children and their families, as well as all those facing hunger during this time, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is packing and distributing boxes of crisis response food. All crisis response boxes contain approximately 25 pounds of shelf-stable food as well as fresh milk, produce, and meat. To reduce barriers, the CPFB provides all crisis response food to its partners at no cost. The funding from the PNC Foundation will help underwrite the costs of procuring, packing, and distributing the crisis response food. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and PNC share a large footprint in central Pennsylvania. The food bank serves 27 counties, many of which overlap with PNC’s market, including Centre, Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties. Some of the work the food bank has been doing in these areas will be supported by the grant, including biweekly crisis response distributions across Harrisburg supported by the Harrisburg School District and the Harrisburg Police Department; weekly crisis response distributions by PowerPacks in Lancaster County, a partner of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; continuation of BackPack programs while schools remain closed in York County; and distribution of grab-and-go meals and crisis response boxes to youth feeding sites across Centre County. Families looking to access food in central Pennsylvania should visit www.centralpafoodbank.org and click on the Find Food feature. Families can also call the food bank’s Food Stamps Helpline at 877-999-5964.
