ODC Schedules Second Food Truck Event By Ann Mead Ash

A recipe, when made correctly, will have just the right quantities of ingredients in the right combination. Likewise, Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for Occupational Development Center (ODC) and organizer of the organization’s second Food Truck Fest, has a recipe for the event. “We want the right mix,” explained Mueller. “We want a good variety. We will have a little bit of everything for everybody.” This year’s Food Truck Fest will feature 16 trucks - twice as many as the 2018 event, according to Mueller - when it is held at Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is no admission charge to attend. Food items from trucks will be available for purchase. For this year’s fest, Mueller has lined up trucks selling items such as Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food, cheesesteaks, burgers, a variety of fried chicken items, fresh-cut french fries and other potato treats, and scooped ice cream treats. Mueller shared that the Reunion food truck, a nonprofit entity started by Community Action Program, will sell soul food at the event. “Last year, they brought pork belly tacos that sold out quickly because they were amazing,” he said. Mueller added that Upohar will be new to the venue this year. “They will be selling global cuisine and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free food,” he said. See Food Truck Fest pg 9

The Occupational Development Center will hold its second Food Truck Fest in Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than a dozen food trucks selling a variety of items will be at the event.

on-site. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the library or at the event. The proceeds from the barbecue sale will support the Summer Reading Program, which has a theme of “The Universe of Stories.” “There’s a focus on space, so we got a lot of new books on planets, astronauts, and space exploration,” said executive director Kristin Fernitz. The Blast-Off Party will launch the Summer Reading Program. It will be held free of charge on the lawn in front of the library from 10 a.m. to noon on June 8. There will be games, prizes, a bounce house, and handdipped ice cream. Children may also pick up their reading logs and get started on their summer reading, Fernitz said. One unique feature of the Blast-Off Party will be the introduction of the new American Girl doll, Luciana Vega, who is an astronaut. Thanks to a donor, Luciana has a space suit that will go with her when she is borrowed from the library. At the party, children may enter to win the opportunity to be the first person to borrow the doll. “There’s a Mars habitat available if someone wants to buy it for the library,” Fernitz related. Luciana joins Zi Yang, Logan, and Gabriela in the library’s collection of American Girl dolls. They may be borrowed for up to a week by children age 8 or older. A parent or guardian must sign out the dolls.

Strasburg-Heisler Library executive director Kristin Fernitz (left) and board president Bryan Moyer invite the community to attend a chicken barbecue fundraiser at Strasburg Jaycee Park on June 1. A Blast-Off Party to launch the Summer Reading Program will be held at the library on June 8. The library will host a number of programs related to space and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) this summer. These will be presented by the North Museum of Nature and Science, Lancaster Parks and Recreation, and library staff members. There will also be an art club, a sewing program for teenagers, and a visit from the Girl Scout STEM mobile Registration for Summer Reading Program events will open two weeks prior to the respective event. Folks may sign up at www.strasburglibrary.org. The STEAM Challenge includes 10 workshops for youths ages 9 to 12 on topics such as coding, electrical circuits, art, music, marbles and mazes, mythical animals, food science, and even giant Yahtzee played on teams. The workshops will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays from June 12 to Aug. 7. There is no charge to attend, but participants

must register for each workshop. Incentives to attend all 10 workshops will be offered. The STEAM Challenge will be led by librarian Gwen Barrows and is sponsored by a grant from the Heisler Foundation. The library is also planning a fund drive in July and will send letters to residents asking for their financial support of the library. Fernitz related that cuts were made to library funding from the state in 2008, and funding has never returned to the previous level. Thus, support from the community is crucial to the library’s continued operation. “We’ve been able to do things because of grants,” Fernitz said, noting that a Heisler Foundation grant recently purchased a new digital catalog station, a freestanding display rack, and furniture for the children’s area. For more information about supporting the library, readers may call 717-687-8969 or email staff@strasburglibrary.org.

A benefit concert for the Crispus Attucks Community Center will be held on Sunday, June 2, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. The idea for the concert came from Kiana Corley, a singer-songwriter. When she heard that the community center had needed to cut back its meal service from five to two days per week, she told her mother, Maria Thompson Corley, a Juilliard-trained concert pianist, that she wanted to do something about it. Given their backgrounds, they decided to hold a benefit concert. Aside from Kiana and Maria, performers will include singers Kristin Sims, Jeremiah Miller, Megan Poff, Jay Poff, and Rachel Rune Farmer, as well as the St. Thomas Episcopal Church choir. Instrumentalists will include former U.S Army Band trumpeter Bradley Mattson, bassist Alex Dalious, and jazz pianist Nate Petley. A freewill offering will be received.

Kiana Corley (left photo) and Maria Thompson Corley (right photo) will be among the performers at a benefit concert on Sunday, June 2, at First United Methodist Church in Lancaster. Proceeds will support the Crispus Attucks Community Center.

All-You-Can-Eat - 9.00 $ Children 4-12 years - 4.50 Last Week for Rhubarb and Strawberry Rhubarb Pies

Strasburg Boy Scout Troop 56 is typically not chicken about its fundraising efforts, but it will make an exception for the sale of barbecue meals on Saturday, June 1, outside the Strasburg Market Place, 214 Hartman Bridge Road, Ronks. “We always sell out every year because ours is the best around,” said senior patrol leader Jackson Price. Barbecue coordinator Christie Livengood noted that she hopes the troop sells 1,000 half-chickens this year. Both meals and half-chickens only will be for sale. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a bag of potato chips, a banana, a dessert, and a beverage. Presale pickups will be available from 10 a.m. to noon, and those without tickets may buy meals and halfchickens from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased from any troop member, or folks may email Scoutmaster Phil Geiger at troop56boyscouts@gmail.com. The proceeds from the chicken barbecue sale will be used by the troop to purchase tents, cleaning supplies, camping equipment, and other items necessary to the good of the group. “This is the one fundraiser each year that benefits the troop as a whole,” Jackson explained. “Other fundraisers - like popcorn sales - go into Scout accounts to pay for trips.” The troop aims to go camping at least once a month except for November and December. Thus, the equipment gets worn and replacements are necessary. Greater numbers of inventory are also required. “Our troop is growing a ton, so we need to buy tents to grow (the inventory) proportionately,” Jackson said. Currently, approximately 35 boys are members of Troop 56. Jackson suggested that the troop is popular because members are encouraged to live by the Scout Law in everyday life. “We grow together from boys to young men,” he added. “We become good citizens that help out the community. When asked, we’re quick to help out.” The troop recently did some mulching at Wesley United Methodist Church, which is its charter organization. Additionally, while camping at the Lancaster County Conservancy, troop members spent time

pulling garlic mustard. The group also performs roadside cleanup on Route 896, hosts flag retirement ceremonies twice a year, and places flags at gravesites for Memorial Day. The group takes time out for educational fun, however. This summer, seven Scouts and four leaders will travel to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico to backpack 63 miles in 11 days. As part of their training, the 11 individuals recently attended Philmont Shakedown at Camp Mack, during which they hiked 10 miles. The hiking will not be the biggest challenge, Jackson said. The altitude at Philmont ranges from 10 to 20 times higher than that of Lancaster County. “I think it’ll be a lot of fun, (though),” Jackson remarked. “My older friends who have gone said it’s a great experience.” While the 11 older boys and adults are in New Mexico, the remainder of the troop will attend summer camp at Horseshoe Scout Reservation in Rising Sun, Md. During the seven days there, troop members will have the opportunity to work on requirements for many different forms of advancement, including rank, merit badges, and specialty programs, that they might not have access to otherwise. New members are welcome to join Troop 56. The group meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Scout House, 120 S. Jackson St., Strasburg. For more information about Troop 56, readers may email Geiger at troop56boyscouts@gmail.com, find “Boy Scout Troop 56” on Facebook, or visit https://sites.google.com/view/ strasburgtroop56/about-us.

Concert Series from pg 1 Concerts by the Creek has announced its summer lineup. Held in Ephrata’s Grater Park, the concerts are free to the public and open to people of all ages. This annual concert series will kick off on Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. with Rumpke Mountain Boys. The group will present a blend of signature vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, upright bass and banjo. It does not perform based on a set list, so each performance is improvised. Taking the stage on Tuesday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m. will be Lower Case Blues Band. Lower Case Blues is a trio that plays a new fusion of old blues, funk, and rock. Steal Your Peach will wrap up the series on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m. This group interweaves the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers Band experiences while injecting a bit of its own mix.

Members of Steal Your Peach have shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Pete Seeger, and Arlo Guthrie, as well as members of the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, Phish and MOE. An array of food trucks will be on-site. Comfort food and ice cream will also be available. Concerts by the Creek is sponsored in part by the Borough of Ephrata, the Ephrata Public Library, and the Ephrata Cloister. More information is available at www.con certsbythecreek.org. Concerts are held rain or shine. Pictured on front:

The route, which is nearly a half-mile long, will traverse the inner loop of the park for two laps. All children who run the laps will receive participation awards. Organizers encourage runners, walkers, and cyclists to form teams of family members, fellow church members, co-workers, or friends. A “team” option will be available to individuals who sign up online through https://thefactoryministries.com. Prizes will be awarded to the largest and best-dressed teams. Individuals who register by Sunday, May 26, will receive a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be held on June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise.

In addition inviting to riders, runners, and walkers to take part in the event, The Factory is looking for volunteers to help on June 15. Those who wish to volunteer may call 717-687-9594. The Factory has its roots in the early 1990s, when two local churches surveyed the community about area needs. In response, a former sewing factory in Paradise was converted into The Factory Youth Center. In 2006, The Factory expanded to include social services for adults. As the organization continued to grow, the name was changed to The Factory Ministries. The Factory Ministries now offers a youth center, a food pantry, and social services, and the organization has become a hub for connecting needs and resources in the Pequea Valley area. It is a goal of the organization to empower local residents and strengthen the community.

Other new trucks at the event will sell vegetarian pasta meals, Asian meatball sliders, Key West tacos with shrimp, oldfashioned barbecue with smoked meats, sweet and savory waffle items and sandwiches, and shrimp, oyster, and crab items and pierogies. On the sweet side will be trucks selling hand-dipped ice cream treats, kettle corn, creative cotton candy treats, Southern-style bakery items, cupcakes, and cannoli. For entertainment, organizers have engaged two live bands to return to perform. “Ink Vault will play cover songs from famous artists such as Dave Matthews, said Mueller, who added that the band has a bluegrass feel and will play familiar songs from the 1970s through the present day. Local singer and songwriter Mark DeRose will also perform. Because many of the 2,000 attendees at last year’s fest brought along their dogs, ODC has asked the Lancaster SPCA to be onsite with puppies for adoption, and organizers hope to have a vendor selling pet items join in for the day. “We are partnering with Manheim Township Recreation Commission for this event, noted Mueller, who added that a Touch-A-Truck event, which was part of the 2018 fest, will also be held.

“We will have a police car, a fire engine, an ambulance, and some big earthmoving equipment children can tour and climb on, he said. The Thaddeus Stevens STEM truck will be at the event with a robot to demonstrate, and the ODC Auxiliary will hold a plant sale, featuring hanging plants, in the park. “We will have face painting and caricature drawing, added Mueller. Additionally, a mobile bike shop will be on-site with information on bike safety and local trails to ride. Prizes and giveaways will be a focus of this year’s fest, and Mueller said that ODC has received many donations of items from local area businesses. “We will have a new bicycle, a couple of bags of items from a local dental office, (and) hair care products, and we will have restaurant gift cards, said Mueller, who also listed family passes to the Overlook pool and a round of golf among the prizes. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. On Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., “Remembering Inventor-Machinist Chester Ruth and Celebrating the Cradle of Tolerance and Diversity in Southeastern Pennsylvania” will take place at Landis Valley Christian Fellowship, 2420 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster. Gwendolyn M. Ruth Dickinson will share a presentation on her recollection of her grandfather, William Chester Ruth, as a creative mechanic and spiritual and family leader. The presentation will be followed by a light lunch and then a talk by Dr. Leroy Hopkins, retired Millersville University professor. Hopkins will present historical context for the Lancaster and Chester county area as a place of tolerance and opportunity. Born in Chester County, Ruth moved by the early 20th century to Gap, where he had a blacksmith and machine shop. The son of a South Carolina slave, he was by the early 1920s a wellknown and capable blacksmith to Amish, Mennonite, and other farm families of eastern Lancaster and western Chester counties. His genius for solving mechanical problems led him to design and patent a machine feeder used between the thresher and straw baler, a cinder-spreading truck, self-raising elevator, and other machines. He also followed in his father’s footsteps as a lay leader of his church.
