Dehydration collaboration
Local nonprofits pool their resources to feed the world
BY JEFF FALKWorld hunger isn’t a food shortage problem. World hunger is a logistical difficulty, a supply problem.
Working together, a pair of local nonprofit organizations have come up with a solution that is making a real difference in addressing the global problem. The key to their successful solution is an innovative approach to the process of food dehydration.
“The problem isn’t that the world doesn’t have enough food; it’s the distribution,” said Jeremy Frith, the CEO of Barnabas Aid, an international nonprofit headquartered in Lancaster. “We’re trying to address that problem. It’s a distribution issue, but it’s also an educational issue. We need a change of mindset. We have so much food and people don’t think about it, and when it goes into landfills, it creates
problems. That food could be feeding somebody.”
Near the end of 2022, Barnabas Aid, which is located at 80 Abbeyville Road, Lancaster, approached Blessings of Hope, 500 Becker Road, Leola, about the possibility of donating a $90,000, 20-square-foot commercial food dehydration unit to its ministry.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are placed in the unit, which preserves the produce’s nutritional value and extends its shelf life by five years.
From the process, the organizations concocted a dehydrated soup mix that can provide one meal for up to 12 people.
“Our ministry’s mission is to help suffering Christians around the world,” said Frith. “The goal is to get food to places where it’s basically nonexistent. We’re feeding people who need food. We’re doing it because we’re directed to do so in the Bible. We want to help
BY JEFF FALKFaith is a powerful instrument. But faith becomes even more meaningful when paired with acts of service.
New Life Church’s vacation Bible school (VBS) is an act of service geared toward youths. It’s also a wonderful example of community outreach.
“Our mission is to reach out to the community and be a part of the community and share God with the community,” said
Julie Capaldi, New Life Church’s children’s pastor. “We want people to get to know us, and we want to know our community. First and foremost, we want the children to know that God loves them and that we care about them. We’re not just the church on the corner. New Life Church wants to be known for sharing the love of Jesus. Our doors are open.”
New Life’s VBS is the church’s most ambitious yearly community outreach. This year’s
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDMulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, recently held its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. The exhibit opened on May 3, and it featured more than 170 pieces of artwork by pet owners and artists from every school district in the county to celebrate the unique bond between humans and their animal companions. The show remained at the gallery through the end of May.
The opening reception was attended by veterinarians and vendors of pet accessories and other animal-related products, as well as representatives of the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Every year, Mulberry Art Studios uses its We Love Our Pets show to support the Sebastian Foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds from art sales to the organization. The Sebastian Foundation helps to locate homes for animals throughout Lancaster County, and its representatives
Building character through bicycling
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past decade, Lee DeRemer has watched great things happen with Lifecycles. The nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program aims to build young people of character through bicycling.
“This program appeals to a wide range of young people with different gifts and skills, but it seems to really attract teen boys and girls who haven’t found their way in a team sport or another program in school,” he said. “For many kids, this is the first thing that clicks, and that’s very rewarding.”
Lee and his wife, Marcie, started Lifecycles with a mission of supporting youths in the community.
“This program always has been and still is 100% free for the boys and girls who participate,” Lee said, noting that bikes, helmets and other safety gear are all provided if needed, along with a free hot meal every time the group gets together for a ride.
“This year, we’ve got 139 boys and girls registered, and 38 of those are first-time participants,” he shared. “The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’ groups. as many people as possible. The suffering in the world is getting worse. We have a duty to help our brothers and sisters the best we can.”
In November of 2023, the Barnabas Aid-Blessings of Hope collaboration sent out its initial container load of donated foodvalued at $250,000 - to Haiti. The second container load of donated food is currently being prepared for shipment to Cuba.
“In the United States, an estimated 80 billion pounds of food is wasted each year, which equates to 242 pounds per person,” said Frith, a resident of Lancaster. “Forty percent of America’s annual food supply is wasted. When we go to a restaurant, we get huge

portions of food. But it’s not just a United States problem. A lot of food is wasted in the Western world. Globally, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted each year.”
Frith said that Blessings of Hope receives so much donated food from farmers, supermarkets and distributors that it is sometimes forced to turn it away. Unused food usually ends up as animal feed or is dumped in landfills.
“We knew the partnership would work,” said Frith. “Blessings of Hope has so much food coming in. A lot of it is food that’s going to go by the wayside if not used.”

from Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m., and boys’ and girls’ teams also ride from Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
In addition to the groups enjoying rides around the countryside of Lancaster County, some of the more seasoned participants are training for longer, challenging rides taking place this summer. A girls’ team will ride a six-day, 230-mile route along the coast of Lake Michigan, finishing at Mackinac Island. Boys’ teams will ride a six-day, 320-mile route from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., on the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trail; a six-day, 290-mile route to Niagara Falls; and an eightday, 350-mile route from northern Pennsylvania through the Adirondack Mountains. A boys’ team will also take a 13-day, 430-mile ride in Colorado, finishing with a summit of Mount Blue Sky on North America’s highest paved road at 14,271 feet.
“It’s going to be a very fun summer,” Lee said. “We are also rolling out

nership between Barnabas Aid and Blessings of Hope has blossomed. It’s a joint venture that has produced a win-win situation.
“It’s been great to have this partnership,” said Frith. “Blessings of Hope has the facilities, and they also have the volunteers. We have the international connections. We know where the food is needed. It enables our participants to realize they are really making a difference. It’s a way for Americans to feel they’re part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
“Now what we want to do is scale this up,” Frith added.

Teams will ride locally during the week through the end of August, and Lifecycles will continue with rides on two Saturdays in both September and October.
Although the season has already started, youths can join the program at any point. Volunteers are also welcome at any time, Lee said.
He noted that as Lifecycles celebrates 10 years of serving youths, he continues to appreciate the impact the program has on

were accompanied by several adoptable dogs on opening night. The event raised more than $800 for the foundation. We Love Our Pets’ opening night was sponsored by Metro Pet Vet, an animal hospital based in Lancaster city. Every year, art teachers in school districts such as Conestoga Valley, Warwick, Penn Manor, Solanco and many others partner with Mulberry Art Studios to incorporate the We Love Our Pets show in their curriculum. Students are able to submit artwork made in class for a chance to be featured in the exhibit.
Three artists received
awards for pieces entered in the show: the youth People’s Choice award was given to Jinx Canfield of Ephrata for the painting “Eloise,”
Violet van der Meij of Lancaster earned Best in Show in the youth category for her piece “Space Aussie,” and Jen van der Meij of Lancaster received the Best in Show and People’s Choice awards for her paintings “Colonel Sanders” and “Jessie,” respectively.
“I enjoy sculpture and drawing but I didn’t have the patience to work with acrylic on canvas when I was younger, so I’m not as experienced with it yet,” said 16-year-old Canfield, who used acrylic paint to make “Eloise.” “Eloise, the pup, developed some recent health issues limiting her time here with us, so this is going to end up as a sort of memorial and remembrance piece.”
Violet, who is Jen’s 11-year-old daughter, said she decided to paint an Australian Shepherd as it is her favorite breed. “I enjoy all mediums of art,
but I went with watercolor and ink because it was a progression from some of the pieces I submitted last year,” Violet added. “I allowed myself to use more imagination this year by putting my Aussie into a space environment.”
“I enjoyed watching Violet be more comfortable with exploring this year, and I love how her pieces turned out,” Jen said. “She’s a talented young lady, and I loved sharing this experience with her.”
Jen’s paintings incorporated gold leaf, a technique that she had never experimented with before. “Jessie” depicts Jen’s childhood pet donkey, and “Colonel Sanders” portrays a cat owned by Jen’s close friends. “For ‘Jessie,’ I wanted my love of donkeys to be represented with an over-the-top background, flooding the entire piece with gold leaf before painting over it with acrylic,” Jen said. “For ‘Colonel Sanders,’ I used gold leaf as a much more subtle accent, but I exaggerated the colors of his fur to add some interest. I made him larger than life to represent how loved he is by his owners.”

Special Needs Benefit Auction scheduled in Ronks
BY ANN MEAD ASHMervin Beiler, who has been attending the Sunny Sunbeam Center, located south of Route 30, for about 10 years, loves to greet visitors with the words, “Welcome to Sunny Sunbeam Center.” Beiler is the unofficial assistant to teacher Esther King, and he hurried to help answer questions for this article on the upcoming fundraiser that helps support Sunny Sunbeam and seven other area centers for members of the Plain community with special needs.
The 18th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 1, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 10 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m.
Sunny Sunbeam and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Caring Hearts, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - together give the more than 100 adults who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work. Beiler noted that two of the 28 Sunny Sunbeam attendees come from Maryland.
Sunny Sunbeam attendees visit the center on Mondays and Wednesdays over the summer, and three days a week during the other seasons. Some days lunch is
prepared at the center, and other days participants bring their own lunches. According to King, participants arrive at 9 a.m., and the day begins with devotions, which includes reading a chapter from the Bible, praying, and singing.
Beiler noted that lessons are part of each morning session, featuring arithmetic, reading, spelling, and English, before lunch at 11:30 a.m. After lunch, there is a story time, followed by projects to be worked on. King said a group will focus on packaging poly clothespins, and other projects include making keychains with beads and, in the summer, mowing the yard.
Highlights of this year’s auction will include carriages, swing sets, and sheds. A 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two
garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Other items will include grills, quilts, scooters, wagons, tools, and outdoor furniture.
Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Among the lunch items will be cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. Drive-through service will be available from 5:30 a.m. through 6 p.m.
Beiler noted that on his first visit to Sunny Sunbeam in the fall,

Ephrata Cloister plans special tours
The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will offer Upper Floor Tours on Saturday, June 15. Tours will begin every hour starting at 10 a.m. with the last tour departing at 2 p.m.
Attendees will have the opportunity to discover the unrestored second floor of the 1743 Saron Dormitory building, or Sisters’ House. This space maintains much of the structure’s original 18th-century design and materials that aided in the building’s restoration during
VBS, themed “Go for the Gold” - a tribute to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris - will be conducted at the church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. from Sunday, June 9, through Wednesday, June 12.
Children from Lancaster County who have completed the first through the sixth grades are eligible to attend.
The two-hour evening sessions will consist of a welcome song, Bible stories, relatable tales of famous athletes who could be considered role models and about 45 minutes of fundamental sports instruction. Children can choose to learn the basics of volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer or cheerleading. Arts and crafts activities will also be available.
“We like to have fun. We like to laugh. We like to meet the families,” said Capaldi. “The kids really like the sports instruction. They like to be active. Kids love to be outside and doing things. We find that the sports theme has been working really well.
Our kids look forward to coming back to it.”
Typically, up to 180 students from the Conestoga Valley, Manheim Township, Lampeter-Strasburg, Manheim Central, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor and Hempfield school districts, as well as the School District of Lancaster, attend New Life Church’s VBS. The church also sponsors a weekly kids’ church day and a youth group as part of its ministry for young people.
An instructor teaches participants the fundamentals of basketball at last year’s New Life Church vacation Bible school.
“Vacation Bible school is a function of New Life’s mission,”said Jon Watson, New Life Church’s director of young adults and small group ministries.
New Life Church has 133 members and 200 active attendees.
“Everybody in church gets ready for vacation Bible school,” said Capaldi. “Our whole church gets behind us. Our whole church is excited about this, and everyone participates in one way or another.”
Since being founded in the early 1980s, New Life Church has sponsored a VBS each summer.
“One of our visions is to build a bridge to the community,” said Jake Kelly, New Life Church’s youth pastor. “We want it to be part of our DNA. We want to be a church where people come and participate.”
