Veterans Decorate Graves In CV By Ann Mead Ash

While COVID-19 restrictions made many Memorial Day observations impossible, members of the board of trustees of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) were undeterred in their resolve to be sure deceased veterans in the Conestoga Valley area were remembered. On the afternoon of May 20, ULTWMA president Bob Zook was at the Bareville Cemetery on Brethren Church Road in Leola with his wife, Barbara, who is also a ULTWMA board member; his

Bob Zook (back, center), president of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA), brought his grandchildren Gavin (left) and Joelle to help place flags on the graves of veterans in the Bareville Cemetery on May 20. and the Pickels. The cemeteries where flags were placed are located at Stumptown Mennonite Church, Zion Lutheran, and Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church, along with Bareville. Flags wer also placed at Eby’s Cemetery at Monterey Chapel and Trumbauer Memorial Cemetery. Bob said that Lin ordered 450 flags to decorate the veterans’ graves in area cemeteries. He noted that the flags were picked up at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center, 101 Champ Blvd., Manheim, in production-line style. “(We drove) in, and they loaded up the vehicle and sent us out,” recalled Bob, who said flags were ordered through Veterans Affairs about a week prior to the May 18 pickup date. Checking In With Friendship Community Grant To Help Residents Get Back On Track By Dayna M. Reidenouer

By Ann Mead Ash

For several months, life has looked a little bit different for Lancaster County residents, and that includes individuals served by Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Friendship Community is a faithbased, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Friendship employs almost 400 team members whose roles range from direct support professionals and nurses to

In late April, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), located at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, applied for a grant for the Lancaster CARES COVID-19 Response Fund. Angela Trout, director of development with CVCCS, explained that the fund was formed through a collaboration of the Lancaster County Community Foundation and the United Way of Lancaster County. On May 8, CVCCS received a communication from Sam Bressi, president and CEO of the Lancaster County Community Foundation, informing the organization that a $5,000 grant would be bestowed on it for the work it does with its Back on Track (BOT) program. The BOT program serves residents who work, own or rent a home, and pay their bills, but do not qualify for social services and are one paycheck away

The Zooks were there to place flags on about 40 graves in the cemetery, one of six area cemeteries Bob said the ULTWMA trustees planned to decorate for Memorial Day. will be needs, but we don’t know what they will look like,” said Trout. “Some people are getting unemployment, and (currently) there’s a stay on evictions and foreclosures, but are people putting money away for when that starts again?” Although the grant funds cannot be used to pay rent or mortgages, BOT helps to make clients aware of the importance of realizing that bills will eventually be due. “(There’s an) education piece because people should be putting money away for rent. That money will come due,” she said. Enter Dottie Slothower, CVCCS staff advocate and financial coach. Slothower gained financial literacy skills through a program she took part in at Westminister Presbyterian Church. Trout noted that Slothower helps clients with basic financial literacy skills such as balancing a checkbook, but she also provides education. “Poverty is cyclical and intergenerational,” said Trout, who noted some clients may never have been given the foundation to help them manage money properly. “When you’re underemployed and working a minimum wage job, you can’t support a family. They’re doing all the

right things, but they’re just scraping by,” she explained. “They make too much money to qualify for services, but if their car breaks down, they can’t get to work anymore, (then) they get behind on bills, rent, or mortgage and lose their home.” The grant, Trout noted, is especially important because the COVID-19 crisis has accelerated this progression. “If (a client) works at a grocery store, if they are struggling to fill a gas tank and they can’t afford gas to get back and forth to work, we can give them a gas card (using grant money),” said Trout. “Fuel for someone who has several children (can help) meet their needs (when there is a struggle) to cover food or child care.” Trout noted that when CVCCS applied for the funds, the organization was looking to help clients cover transportation costs and car and housing repair costs. “We can assist them with that,” she said. Those in need of food services or assistance through the CVCCS BOT program may call Slothower at 717-208-3711, ext. 103, to schedule an intake. More information about the program may be found at https://cvccs.org/financial -coaching.

Bob, who served in the U.S. Marines, said that placing flags is an important part of the annual Memorial Day celebration. “Memorial Day is in honor of U.S veterans who died in combat in all wars,” said Bob. “The placement of flags not only honors them, but also, all deceased veterans who served in any U.S. military branch. We

salute them all and are proud to honor them.” ULTWMA is a nonprofit, volunteer organization located at 54 W. Main St., Leola. A chicken barbecue fundraiser at Mellinger Mennonite Church on June 13 will raise funds to support Haitians Helping Haitians for Christ, which was founded by Elage Estime. The proposed community center will be used as an education hub to teach job skills, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, music, English, sewing, and more. “If long-term sustainable change is to take place in Haiti, it will be the results of Haitians coming to know Christ, growing in discipleship, learning job skills, and being equipped to take responsibility for change in their

communities,” Elage asserted. “We’d love if you would pray for HHH and its ministries,” Sherer said. “We would also love donations either for the community center or for the general fund.” For more information about HHH, readers may visit https://haitianshelping haitians.org. Anyone with questions about the barbecue event may call Sherer at 717-615-4162.

Clean gauges or lids can be dropped off at a designated location for testing, and customers will pick the gauge or lid up on a later date. Testing is free. Supporters of Haitians Helping Haitians (HHH) for Christ will hold a chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Meals and chicken only will be sold, with the former including a half-chicken, a roll and butter, coleslaw, applesauce, chips, a dessert, and a beverage. Cash and checks made out to Haitians Helping Haitians will be accepted. The proceeds will be used to help to build a community center in Haiti, and all funds received by the end of the year, up to $30,000, will be matched by a donor, said board member and Willow Street Mennonite Church pastor Joe Sherer. HHH was founded by Elage and Betty Metzler Estime. Elage grew up in the Haitian communities of Montrouis and Charrier. He was raised in a Christian family of eight children, who were still young when their father died. Elage attended Mission Possible School, thanks to a sponsorship. He enjoyed visits

from mission teams and became involved with outreach efforts by using his small allowance to purchase bananas and bread for neighborhood children. After attending Youth With A Mission, Elage focused on serving in Haiti. He and Betty, a Lancaster County native, met in 2010, when she was part of a medical mission team, and they married in 2012. Elage’s ministry has grown and has become multifaceted. Initially, the Estimes self-funded the ministry, but a board of directors was formed to assist them and broaden the support, Sherer said. HHH provides food support for local schools, orphanages, and prisons and runs a feeding program for 18 children. The organization offers English and music classes taught by local teachers. HHH holds yearly seminars for pastors, and it helped a local church acquire land and construct a building. During the summers, HHH hosts camps for 400 children. Additionally, the organization brings North American medical teams to conduct clinics. “In everything we do, we include Haitians working alongside (non-Haitians) to reach their communities,” Elage said.

Dial gauges may also be tested for free at the Lancaster

County Penn State Extension office at 1383 Arcadia Road, Room 140, when the office reopens. People must call 717-394-6851 and schedule an appointment. The Giant Company recently announced that more than 100 businesses were recipients of funds through its emergency grant program. Announced in partnership with Team Pennsylvania, The Giant Company originally designated $250,000 for the program, but due to the overwhelming response, the company decided to double the amount of funding available to $500,000. In all, the company is awarding 110 grants to help support small businesses in Pennsylvania’s food supply chain impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. More than 500 applications were received during the twoweek application period, with more than 60 in the first 24 hours. The 110 recipients span the entire commonwealth and represent multiple areas of the food supply chain, including dairy farms; beef, pork and poultry farms; processors; orchards;

produce farms; apiaries; maple syrup producers; artisan cheesemakers; craft breweries, winemakers and cider producers; specialty yogurt, snack, sauce and condiment manufacturers; and a coffee roastery and confectioner. In addition, with grants ranging from $2,500 up to $15,000, 55% of grants awarded are going to PA Preferred companies and businesses with and special designations account for more than half of the grants awarded. These designations include veteranowned, woman-owned, minorityowned, USDA defined beginner rancher/farmer, USDA defined socially disadvantaged and limited resource farmer. The following local small businesses are the recipients of an emergency grant from The Giant Company: Brown’s Orchards & Farm Market, Loganville; Brubaker Farms, Mount Joy; Caputo Brother’s Creamery,

Spring Grove; Danikacatering dba Danika’s, Dover; Epic Pickles, Dallastown; Fiddle Creek Dairy, Quarryville; Founders Market & Co., Lancaster; Lancaster Hummus Co., Lancaster; Mickey’s Wholesale Pizza, York; R&S Flinchbaugh, Hellam; RTZN Brands/Righteous Felon Craft Jerky, West Chester; Simply Ghee, Lancaster; SkyBlu Farms Inc., Felton; Sweet Mama’s Mambo Sauce, Jen Heasley’s Cooking With the Pros, York; Weaver’s Orchard, Morgantown; The Winery at Wyndridge, Dallastown; and Worth the Wait Farm, Stevens. The GIANT Company and Team Pennsylvania also worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Pennsylvania Chamber and Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association to develop the program.

The iPads have enabled Friendship clients to regularly connect with family members and friends and to engage in meaningful activities. “The acquisition of these iPads has also enabled the spiritual nurture and community life coordinator to connect individually, provide group prayer meetings, and orchestrate uplifting daily videos and songs,” Schuit said. Friendship Community is a nonprofit organization, and it had scheduled its 17th annual Friendship Heart Gallery art auction on March 26. That event has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 16, and the FEST, Auction, and 5K has been postponed until Saturday, Sept. 26. behavioral specialists and art instructors, as well as a full complement of administrative staff members. As a result of the shutdown, the day programs - including the Friendship Heart Gallery studio and Meaningful Day Academy were immediately closed. Instead of Friendship’s clients spending time together in one place, each individual had to stay in his or her respective home. This resulted in staff members having to provide around-the-clock care at each home, when they had not previously done that, and that prompted schedule changes, flexibility, and creativity. Friendship Community also formed an urgent response team to prepare for the possibility of illness. Team members made sure to maintain direct contact with clients, clients’ families, and government authorities at all levels, and they also implemented protocols to keep everyone safe. Friendship CEO Gwen Schuit, BSN, M.Ed., NHA, credited two sewing circles - Sewing Hope, a group associated with Worship Center, and Bird-in-Hand Fabric - with providing cloth masks for Friendship’s staff members and clients. Schuit noted that while the masks are protective, they pose significant challenges. “(Some clients) have struggled with team members wearing masks as the masks inhibit visualization of facial expression and can alter verbal communication,” Schuit explained. “Furthermore, some individuals have even exhibited new behaviors related to their fears. Team members have needed to utilize new techniques in order to maintain their established trusting relationships with individuals in order to safely wear the masks for any extended period of time.” Following established routines is important for many of Friendship’s clients, so staff members sought out ways to alleviate the stress caused by the shutdown’s disruption of regular activities. Two parents had a source for iPads, and Friendship was able to obtain enough of the electronic

With in-person events and activities being canceled indefinitely and public places closed, many things have moved online, including libraries. Whether someone needs a new novel to dive into or wants to watch movies without paying a monthly subscription fee, libraries offer a variety of resources and activities, which may also help people save money. While people are unable to borrow physical books, they can still read (or hear, if they prefer audiobooks) the text straight from a phone or tablet with apps like Libby that are free and connect directly to a library card. College students who will be writing papers can use the school’s library or a local one to score free online access to journals, books, and more. People who feel they are paying for too many streaming services may see if their local library is partnered with platforms like Hoopla and Kanopy, which offer access to a variety of television shows, movies, music, audiobooks, and more. Whether someone has a child studying for next year’s standardized tests, is planning to go

to graduate school, or wants to better his or her workplace skills, he or she should see whether the local library is partnered with platforms like LearningExpress Library to help prepare. For teachers or students, there are also free platforms like Shmoop to help with teaching guides and study resources. Language resources are available to anyone who wants to learn a new language. Patrons should look to see if their library offers resources like Mango, Rosetta Stone, or, for children, Little Pim. Libraries bring people and communities together through books, learning, and events, but while in-person interaction is off the table, patrons should determine whether their library offers virtual workshops. Whether it is a story time for children, tai chi, guided meditation, guitar lessons, or anything else, these events are free and may only require a library card. If someone does not have a library can, they can see if their local library is offering applications for e-library cards during this time.

“2020 Lancaster County Little Miss Agriculture USA” might be a big name for a young girl, but titleholder Riley LaBow was eager to take it on. Riley was just 7 years old when she applied for the title with the help of her mother, Kaire LaBow. The youngster celebrated her eighth birthday on May 17. Kaire noted that Riley became interested in agriculture, particularly soil cultivation, as a result of the family’s box gardening practice. “Dad (Craig) is enjoying this as well, with the box garden,” Kaire remarked. “He’s been getting (Riley) out there to pull weeds.” The LaBows added chickens to their agricultural ventures at their home in a Landisville development last year. “Raising the chickens last year was awesome,” Kaire remarked. She pointed out that their place of residence was not a drawback in Riley’s application to be Lancaster County Little Miss Agriculture USA. “You don’t have to live on a farm to promote agriculture, and that’s what we’re doing: spreading the word about local farmers,” Kaire explained. “I thought this would be a great experience for her - for the whole family, really.” Riley was accepted for the title in December, and she received her crown around Christmas. The sash arrived in January. “It’s a beautiful crown. She loves it,” Kaire said. Kaire noted that Riley was excited about giving a presentation to her second-grade class at Landisville Primary Center earlier this year. The youngster talked about different parts of agriculture, discussing the agronomic process of soil to seeds to produce, as well as highlights of dairy farming. “She got the kids involved,” Kaire said. “It was pretty impressive.” The LaBows visited the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January, and Riley met other titleholders from across the state as well as Gov. Tom Wolf. “She loves making new friends,” Kaire said. “She’s really missing them.” Riley has been participating in online meetings with other agriculture royalty since the shutdown began on March 15. The 2020 Pennsylvania Miss Agriculture USA competition happened to be scheduled

Riley placed second in formal wear and third in interview. “I thought she did really well for being her first competition,” Kaire remarked. “It was a really great experience. We didn’t go into the competition with expectations. … There are a lot of kids who live on farms, so they’re living (the farming life) every day.” The plan for Riley’s reign is to use her crown to be an “AGvocate” for agriculture, Kaire said. To round out her knowledge, Riley was treated to a private tour of Kreider Farms in Manheim, and she was hoping to visit Culton Organics in Silver Spring. Riley also has copies of an agriculture-related book that she planned to read aloud at local libraries and then donate to their collections. “We want to give back,” Kaire said. Originally, Riley had hoped to promote agriculture at events and meetings throughout Lancaster County. The opportunities have disappeared because of the stay-athome orders, but she hopes to be part of the Elizabethtown Fair and is exploring the possibility of participating in other local fairs. Kaire welcomes public appearance inquiries by email at CKL7880@verizon.net. Anyone interested in participating in Miss Agriculture USA is invited to email Kaire as well.

Red Accordion Studios will present an online musical, adapted to be rehearsed and performed entirely remotely. “The Big One-Oh! Online Edition,” with music by Doug Besterman, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and libretto by Timothy Allen McDonald, will have six performances. The show will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. on Fridays, June 12 and 19, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, June 13 and 20. The show was adapted from a full-length theater for young audiences show, which was adapted from a children’s book of the same name. In the musical, a friendless boy decides to throw a 10th birthday party for himself, featuring a “House of Horrors” theme. This 20-minute Zoomsical features a cast of 20 actors, ranging from age 8 to adults. Many of the actors are local children from Hempfield, Penn Manor, and various other school districts, including some in Lebanon and York. However, actress Reagan McCartney, who plays Swampy, joins from Arkansas, and college student Seth Jerabek, who plays Zombie King, is currently in Ohio. The cast uses Zoom to rehearse. Singing and dancing together is a challenge, so the big song and dance numbers will be prerecorded. The acting will be done together over a Zoom meeting. Because of the technical challenges, the

Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania (JA) will not hold its in-person A Global Tasting Food, Wine and Silent Auction event this year, but it will hold the silent auction portion of the event virtually. This will run from Monday, June 15, at 9 a.m. to Friday, June 19, at 9 p.m. at www.bidpal.net/jawine. It is free to register and participate in the auction. Winning bidders will receive their items through the mail if possible, and larger items will be available for

pickup at the JA office. This spring, the Junior Achievement team helped local educators by providing them with JA content to use in their digital classrooms, and more than 25,000 local students experienced the JA program virtually. Funds raised during the silent auction will go toward providing JA programming this fall in whatever format schools require. The next in-person A Global Tasting event will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

was nicknamed the Wolverines, a nod to the movie “Red Dawn.” With some early success procuring PPE, the Wolverines team was added as a partner to the Southern Central Regional Task Force of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. Besecker, with assistance from associates, seeded the E’s PPE acquisition initiative with his own money and saw community dollars flow in after that. With the funding, the E has supplied approximately 60,000 pieces of PPE for free, including face masks, gowns and gloves, to frontline medical workers, firefighters, police officers, funeral home employees, bus drivers, nursing home staff, and home health workers throughout Lancaster County and beyond. On April 8, the beginning of Passover, Besecker connected with a Great Neck, N.Y., based PPE brokerage firm, whose employees are Orthodox Jews. They had available supply, so Besecker wired them the money on the spot, but knew he could not pick up the PPE before sundown, when the supplier’s staff would no longer be able to work. Besecker turned to his Wall Street business associates, emailing people he knew who lived on Long Island. Within minutes, Jerry S. Arzú, of brokerage Telsey Advisory Group, was en route from his nearby home to pick up the 14 boxes before sundown and then drove to meet Besecker along the New Jersey Turnpike to save Besecker the trip across New York City. Besecker has also received donated, handmade cotton face masks daily from local Amish and Mennonite communities, which he distributes along with the medical-grade equipment he purchases.

Lancaster-based company Emerald Asset Management PA has provided personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Joseph E. Besecker, president and CEO of Emerald, started the Emerald Foundation in 2010. The “E,” as the foundation is commonly known, purchased the former Jewish Community Center in Manheim Township in 2017, nearly 25,000 square feet of space on approximately nine acres. Filling it with nonprofit partners, the E was eager to support the community and soon added a separate focus on electronic gaming, or esports, as a way to help students acquire and refine in-demand technical skills. In recent years, Besecker has developed a national network to enhance the foundation’s impact in the esports world. Besecker heard about COVID-19 in early January and soon learned that not enough PPE was available locally. In early March, the E launched its Call to Arms for Operation Emerald, a commitment to furnish free PPE to the frontline medical and first responder community. In addition, it began planning, promoting, and hosting esports tournaments for students stuck at home. Besecker transitioned the E facility - by this time closed in accordance with the orders of Gov. Tom Wolf - into a 24-hour PPE acquisition and distribution center. To fill the void, Besecker ramped up quickly, calling for help from his foundation leadership team, including his wife, Martha Besecker, and his sisterin-law Susie Kettler-Ziegler, as well as local businessman Robert Zuckerman and Dr. Christian R. Macedonia, CEO of a local life sciences company. This new team
