Summer Lunch Club: Come for the sustenance, stay for the fun
BY JEFF FALKIt provides energy. It helps with the growth of muscle and bone. It aids in the development of cognitive function.
The importance of nutrition and a healthy diet can’t be overstated - or taken for granted.
Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services’ (CVCCS) Summer Lunch Club seeks to be a reliable and consistent source of food for growing local children. The lunch club is also designed to bridge a calorie gap for students involved in the free and reducedcost meal program during the school year.
“Good nutrition is important to children’s development,” said
CVCCS’ executive director, Jon Barrett. “In America, we don’t think hunger can be an issue. But food is huge for cognitive development; it affects everything. Hunger is directly connected to our brains. That’s why we want to make sure we’re prioritizing it. Food is critical.”
This summer, for the first time in conjunction with the faith-based Good News Club, the Summer Lunch Club will be conducted every Wednesday from June 12 to Aug. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at East Lampeter Township’s Flory Park, 416 Dohner Drive, Lancaster. The Summer Lunch Club, whose slogan is “Fresh Food and Friendly Faces,” also features
games, activities and fellowship and is open to people age 18 and under.
The program is free, no sign-ups are required, and each child will be given three meals, which can be taken off-site. Typically, anywhere from 20 to 40 kids and youths attend the enhanced lunches.
“They’re Conestoga Valley students, but it’s open to anyone in Lancaster County,” said Barrett. “It’s mostly kids from lower-income homes. It’s within walking distance for a lot of kids. We do weekend meals during school, so this is a way to continue that ministry into the summer. It’s also a response to (the free and reduced-cost meal program). They’re getting
Flags stand for freedom and those who fought to preserve it
BY JEFF FALKSometimes we forget. Sometimes we take things for granted.
Sometimes we need reminders. They can provide clarity and perspective.
The main purpose of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) is to honor veterans and provide reminders. The Memorial Day holiday season is ULTWMA’s time to shine.
“The goal of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association is to honor the military people who served the United States of America,” said ULTWMA
president Bob Zook. “It’s about giving back to the veterans. It’s important to remember them because they served our

Music will liven Sunday nights at Long’s Park
BY JEFF FALKLong’s Park has a history with music in Lancaster.
It’s a history of culture. It’s a history of diversity. It’s a history of symbiosis.
It’s a history that continues to evolve.
The 62nd season of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s (LPAF) Summer Music Series is upon us. More than
bigger and better, this Summer Music Series is as varied as ever.
“What we’re trying to do is bring diversity in genre and people from different areas of the world to Lancaster,” said Kristin Chronister, LPAF’s president-elect. “I think rather than top ourselves each year, we’re looking for high-end music we haven’t showcased in a while. We’re looking for different themes in order to bring

country. If no one serves our country, it wouldn’t be here.”
One of the most important activities that ULTWMA, headquartered at 54 W. Main St., Leola, performs is the placing of flags at the graves of local veterans. Recently, in accordance with the observance of Memorial Day 2024, members of ULTWMA placed 446 small flags at veterans’ gravesites at Bareville cemetery, Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church cemetery, Zion Lutheran Church cemetery, Trumbauer Memorial cemetery, Eby’s cemetery and Monterey Chapel and the cemetery at Stumptown Mennonite Church.
“It’s an honor to do it,”
said Barb Zook, Bob’s wife and a member of ULTWMA. “We’re honoring our veterans; it’s done out of respect to them. It’s very humbling.”
“Bob and I have been doing this for 20-plus years,” continued Barb. “It’s something we do to stay active, and we enjoy it. It’s a fun thing. It’s good for the heart. But it’s not just us.”
A group of eight ULTWMA members, along with their friends and families, placed flags donated by the Lancaster County Department of Veterans Affairs on the graves. The flags will remain on the graves until ULTWMA replaces them next year or until they become worn.
“You do learn some things when you’re in the military,” said Bob, a former member of the United States Marine Corps who served as a company clerk in Washington, D.C., from 1965 to 1968. “You learn to obey orders and pay attention to who’s in charge. When you’re in the military, you do what you’re told.”
Established in 1945, ULTWMA currently has about 15 active members. In addition to the annual Memorial Day tradition of placing flags on veterans’ graves, ULTWMA sponsors a scholarship program for Conestoga Valley High School seniors whose parents served in the military, a veterans’ breakfast on Veterans Day in November and community flag retirement ceremonies conducted in cooperation with local BSA Troops 82 and 83, as well as fundraising events like indoor flea markets and its veterans’ hall rentals.
“When I got out of the military, I had a chance to be involved with military people and I took it,” said Bob of his ULTWMA service.

Untold stories from the Civil War
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDDuring the Civil War, numerous Americans who lived throughout the Northern and Southern states risked their safety to help free slaves and to aid people who sought an escape from the violence. Despite the South being occupied by those loyal to the Confederate cause, many Southerners opposed the conflict, and they operated right under the enemy’s nose to hide escaped slaves and refugees of the war. As the nation pieced itself back together after the war, most of these Americans’ stories remained untold to avoid residual conflicts among neighbors. This included the story of Peggy Rhodes, until Karl Rhodes, her great-great-grandson, stumbled upon a piece of long-lost family history.
On May 9, Karl visited Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, to discuss his novel “Peggy’s War,” which details Peggy’s efforts to help Americans who sought to escape the bloodshed of the Civil War. Peggy was a Union loyalist and Mennonite woman who lived in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia during the war. As violence ravaged the country, Peggy
Church library posts hours
Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, invites the public to visit its library between 9:30 and 11 a.m. on Tuesdays from June 18 through Aug. 13. Readers of all ages are welcome to borrow books, and the library’s collection includes fiction, junior fiction, biographies, books about Christian life and books for young readers. The library also lends a large variety of DVDs and puzzles.
The library is located just inside the main entrance to the church. For more information, call the church office at 717-445-6348.
hid other Mennonites and members of the Church of the Brethren who refused to participate in the war in a secret cellar beneath her farmhouse. Peggy protected draft-dodgers until they could safely escape the region, and they often found refuge in Pennsylvania.
“The people who ran the Underground Railroad were mostly Mennonites and members of the Church of the Brethren, and there were large numbers of them in both Virginia and Pennsylvania,” Karl said. The event at Mennonite Life also highlighted several Mennonite hymns commonly sung by refugees as they made their escapes.
The current members of the Rhodes family had no prior knowledge of Peggy’s story, although a few rumors related to the Civil War circulated among Karl and his siblings. One rumor spoke of caves near the family home that contained stockpiles of weapons abandoned by deserters.
When Karl was 4 years old,
his brothers convinced him to crawl down a narrow shaft that they believed to be full of Civil War-era weapons. Young Karl never found the fabled arms, but the endeavor sparked his lifelong interest in the history surrounding the Rhodes’ family home. While conducting genealogy research many years later, Karl finally stumbled upon a book series titled “Unionists and the Civil War Experience in the Shenandoah Valley.” The books contain testimonies from many Southerners who sought compensation for land and livestock that were taken or destroyed by Union forces during battle, including more than 20 pages of testimony from Peggy and her family members. “People often oversimplify life during the Civil War; many Americans in the South didn’t want to fight a war or secede,” Karl said. “This story gives a very different perspective.” For more information, visit https://peggys war.com.

The entirety of the proceeds will help to finance security deposits for those referred by social services. The HARTZ team has also joined Off the Streets volunteers on numerous moves helping to deliver furnishings and set up the homes for those who were formerly homeless.
For the past 24 years, HARTZ PT has developed a physical therapy practice with six offices and 42 employees. Brian and Amy are also committed to serving local communities. Together with the employees they motivate and through their HARTZ Physical Therapy Charitable Organization, the Hartzes spend an average of 50 volunteer hours and contribute more than $1,000 per employee in support of local Lancaster charities each year.
HARTZ PT staff members have volunteered their time cleaning parks and adopting a local highway and they started Equipped for Life, a free medical equipment loan program. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars hosting events for local nonprofits and have volunteered for and participated in their numerous missions
and fundraising events. HARTZ’s signature Fall Blast 5K has raised more than $315,000 in the past 20 years benefiting A Week Away, Benchmark, Gigi’s Playhouse, Off the Streets, Power Packs, Hospice of Lancaster County, The Lancaster Science Factory, Girls on the Run and Aaron’s Acres. As part of its activities celebrating Earth Day, April 22, the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, announced the names of 11 more Lancaster County 501(c) (3) organizations that have been awarded its Green Project Grants. In submitted proposals, each of the organizations expressed a need for support of a venture intended to promote sustainability, expand environmental awareness, and improve green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, each up to $500, a total of 95 Lancaster County organizations have received Green Project Grants from the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past nine years.
Those awarded 2024 grants, along with their projects, include Columbia Public Library, acquiring Nature Explorer Bags and the items that go in them, to be used by both children and adults while on outdoor educational excursions; Conservation Foundation of Lancaster County, purchasing hands-on materials for a three-day professional development workshop for public and private teachers on how to incorporate environmental studies into their classes; and Historic Poole Forge, revitalizing several embankment areas to improve water drainage and stabilize steeper sections that had been covered with non-native honeysuckles and grass.
Also, Homefields Care Farm, Millersville, purchasing native Saskatoon berry plants that will be grown at its farm and at the Perfect Gift Community Garden in Columbia; Immerse International, Millersville, installing more native plants in its campus garden that encourages curiosity, exploration and appreciation of nature; and Lancaster County Therapeutic Riding Inc., a.k.a. Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center, purchasing Fly Predators, a pesticide-free alternative that uses non-stinging, non-invasive wasps to kill fly larvae and adult flies that can spread disease to horses and clients.
Also, Let’s Go 1-2-3, in partnership with Northeast Neighbors United and Lan-
caster Cemetery, supporting its fall community event at the Lancaster Cemetery in northeast Lancaster city that will bolster efforts to clean up, replant, and maintain the cemetery’s gardens and trees; Let’s Go 1-2-3, in partnership with the Southeast Community Green Team, purchasing native plants and signage for use during its Southeast Nature Fest on June 1 at Lancaster’s Hazel Jackson Middle School; and Spanish American Civic Association (SACA), designing and purchasing environmental education signs that use a monarch butterfly theme and will be placed in a narrow grass strip of land between the sidewalk and Tec Centro, SACA’s workforce development facility.
Also, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lititz, developing new programming and purchasing supplies for maintenance and further development of its 3-acre Sacred Grounds project; and Thomas Wharton Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization, moving ahead with its North Mary Edible Garden and Tree Initiatives that will improve underutilized spaces on its campus.
The grant proposals, submitted to the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past several months, were evaluated on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Lancaster Group might be involved.
The grants were in the past financed primarily with funds generated by the group’s Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike and more recently were funded with money donated to the Group by its participation in the ExtraGive. Charitable, educational, or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet” are eligible to apply for a grant.

their needs met at school, but outside of school is where the issue is. During the summer, they’re not getting those needs met.”
The hot and cold, easyto-handle food is prepared and packaged at CVCCS’ kitchen and driven to Flory Park. An emphasis is placed on making the food tasty and healthy.
“In the past, we tried to make the food more healthy,” said Barrett. “That’s addressing the goal, but we also want to make sure the kids are eating it.”
Since the lunch program started about eight years ago, CVCCS has always taken a “feeding the body, feeding the soul” approach to its Summer Lunch Club. The new partnership with Good News Club is expected to take that approach to a new level.
“They’re going to do the
spiritual side and we’re going to do the food side,” said Barrett of Good News Club. “We’re focusing on the holistic side. We believe people are more than mouths to feed. There’s a lot of interaction. We’re also building relationships with kids.”
Of course, it takes volunteers for the Summer Lunch Club to do what it does, between 15 and 20 to be exact.
“There’s a lot of excitement and some kids are just hanging out,” said Barrett. “It can help with loneliness. Kids have so much to offer and they’re worth our time. We try to offer them positive relationships. It just goes such a long way.”

LM senior starts math club for younger students
This past fall, Lancaster Mennonite (LM) 12th-grader Claire Thomas started a chapter of Math4Girls. The after-school club for fourth- and fifthgrade girls aims to close the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and build interest in and engagement with mathematics.
Last summer, Claire studied at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences, where she met the founder of Math4Girls.
There, she was inspired to start the LM chapter. Throughout the year, Claire and the younger students met to explore math concepts through various activities. Topics included divisibility rules, binary code, the Mayan number system, the Four Color theorem, fractals, sequences, and cryptography. The club not only imparted knowledge and increased participants’ skill levels, but it also it built a community.
different kinds of music to Lancaster. It’s more about, ‘Let’s do something different and have fun.’”
This summer’s music series, which includes 12 concerts at Long’s Park Amphitheater, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will feature artists performing genres of music from American rock to gospel rock, from the blues to bluegrass, from country to pop rock. All of the shows will be performed on Sundays starting between 7 and 8 p.m., and most of the concerts last from 90 minutes to two hours.
The sponsor-supported, publicly funded, allweather shows are free to attend.
“As a foundation, we believe that music is not only important to a community but vital,” said Chronister. “Art is meant to be consumed, whether you can afford it or not. The summer series can enable people to experience music without leaving their community and not spending any money. We regularly have people thanking us because that particular artist got them through a hard time. That’s important to us. We believe music is part of every thriving community.”
LPAF’s 2024 concert lineup kicked off on June 2. The Summer Music Series will feature soul/ funk group Snacktime at 7:30 p.m. on June 16; Carolyn Wonderland’s blues at 7:30 p.m. on June 23; the U.S. Army Band’s patriotic performance at 8 p.m. on June 30; the three-act “A Night in Nashville,” featuring Jeff Cohen, Brett Sheroky and The Close at 7 p.m. on July 7; American singer/ songwriter Marc Brous sard at 7:30 p.m. on July 14; Canadian/Colombian world music artist Ramon Chicharron at 7:30 p.m. on July 21; the three-act Watkins Glen Tribute at 7 p.m. on July 28; gospel rockers The Sensational Barnes Brothers at 7:30
p.m. on Aug. 4; the high-flying United States Air Force Band at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11; and the all-female bluegrass band Della Mae at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18.
Local artist PA Mambo Orquesta will perform a 45-minute opening set on June 16, as will locals Los Monstros on July 21.
“Each night brings a new flow,” said Chronister. “You shouldn’t expect to sit there and have a chill night. There’s excitement just to be there. It can be infectious, and the excitement permeates. You want to jump up. You want to move your body. The vibe is alive. It’s something that gets stronger as the evening goes on.”
On average, about 3,000 spectators make
up the audiences for each performance.
“There is such a deep history with the Summer Music Series. It’s almost Lancaster lore,” said Chronister. “Not long after Long’s Park was founded, the amphitheater was built. The mission of the foundation became, ‘We’ve got this amazing venue, so let’s see what we can do to bring music into Lancaster.’ From an evolution experience, we’ve grown it and then maintained it. We’ve taken cues from the public about what they want to hear.”
