The need for first responders, firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics and volunteers is real, both locally and beyond. The severity of the shortage seems to hinge on perspective, location and definition.

East Lampeter Township’s Lafayette Fire Company is addressing the shortage with its Cadet Camp. The annual summer camp is designed to spark an interest in service for younger citizens.

“All over, volunteerism is a dying thing,” said Kim Herskowitz, a certified firefighter and EMT and Cadet Camp’s organizer.

“Everybody needs that paycheck and to support their family. You really have to have a certain personality and that drive for service. We’re trying to awaken that in kids.”

Cadet Camp will consist of 15 learning stations - five on Friday and 10 on Saturday. Among the topics expected be addressed are home fire safety, campfire and burn safety, hazmat, EMS, first aid, hose line basics, ropes and knots, firefighter rescue and bucket brigade.

Members of 10 local firstresponder agencies will be on hand to provide guidance and assistance, as well as real-world connections for the campers.

The fourth edition of Cadet Camp will be conducted on Friday, Aug. 2, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. The hands-on camp is open to individuals ages 8 to 14 from Lancaster County.

Exercise is good for the body. Play is good for the soul. On the surface, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League for adults with disabilities is all about physical activity. But just below it resides elements of competition, socialization and fun.

“Everybody needs physical activity,” said Randy Samuels, a coach and the coordinator for the program. “A lot of these young people don’t get out as much as others. Some aren’t very fast, but we get them out there running and having a good time. They learn teamwork. They get to socialize with their friends.”

“Some of the stations are simple,” said Herskowitz.

“(Campers will) learn the ins and outs of being a volunteer. They’ll help wash a fire truck. We’ll have a critical thinking station and one geared toward team building. They can choose to work as a team. Responders rely on their team and communication with other members.”

“The ability to work together as a member of a team is very important,” she added. “That’s an essential skill you’re going to need no matter where you go. As kids come to our camp and come back, we hope they build their skills and confidence, and hopefully they build some leadership skills.”

Affiliated with Aaron’s Acres, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League has opened registration through the early days of July and the program is looking for players, sponsors and volunteers. The program consists of a 10-game schedule and games are played indoors on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon from Aug. 3 to Nov. 2 at Manheim Brethren in Christ’s gymnasium, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

“It’s like sandlot football,” said Samuels. “We show up and play. We make sure everyone scores and everyone kicks off. There’s no tackling, no pushing, no shoving. We don’t keep score. We make sure everyone has fun.”

Cadet Camp

“We want to keep them very engaged,” said Herskowitz. “In our eyes, this isn’t a camp that’s available everywhere. We’re trying to build interest in these kids and not just for our company. Our goal is to build up the emergency services world.”

While it’s still relatively new, Cadet Camp is already beginning to realize the fruits of its labor.

“It’s a little hard to judge, to see what the outcome is going to be,” said Herskowitz. “If you have kids coming in at 8 years old, it’s going to take some time to see what the returns of the camp are going to be. We’ve already gotten a couple of junior firefighters and we’ve already gotten a couple of parent volunteers.”

“It’s hard to describe; you’ve got to see it,” Samuels continued. “It’s two hours of action-packed football. There’s a lot of trash talking. These young people can give it good, but it’s all in good fun.”

Last year, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League consisted of two teams, 20 players and eight cheerleaders, affectionately referred to as “The Lancaster Sweethearts.” This year the program is hoping to grow the league to 40 players, enough for four teams.

“A lot of these young people want to play football,” said Samuels. “They can’t play football, so this is our way to get them to play.”

Bird-in-Hand Family Inn holds barn raising

A barn raising took place at the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn on June 4 and 5. The new structure will house the offices and rooms damaged in a December 2023 fire.

Beechdale Builders coordinated the barn raising on the grounds of the hotel, framing the building, setting up the trusses and putting the roof on during the event.

Following the fire, the registration desk was temporarily relocated to another of the resort’s guest buildings. The new building at the front of the property will house the registration desk, the sales office and seven guest rooms, including the Schoolhouse Suite and a new Barn Suite.

Barn raisings have long been a tradition in Lancaster County, where the Amish community pulls together to build or rebuild structures damaged by fire.

According to John E. Smucker II, the Bird-in-Hand Corporation’s president and chief executive officer, the Smucker family has hosted and fed travelers to Bird-inHand for four generations. The Family Inn is located on part of the Smucker homestead, which has been in the family since 1911.

“When kids with disabilities hit age 21, there’s not a whole lot out there for them to do,” said Samuels. “We know there are young people out there who want to play football. Come join us. We want them to come out. We want to expand. We love what we do.”

The league is named for Chuckie Magee, a former Aaron’s Acres camper from Lititz who passed away in 2015. The program was started in his honor but only over the last three years has it become associated with Aaron’s Acres.

“We talked to a couple of different organizations, and someone brought up Aaron’s Acres,” said Samuels. “We contacted Risa (Paskoff, executive director) and she loved it.”

“I worked with special needs kids a long time ago, but other than that I didn’t have much interaction until my son was born,” said Samuels. “Honestly, if I didn’t have a son with Down syndrome, I wouldn’t be doing anything like this. It’s opened a whole new world for me.”
