One of the five human senses, hearing is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for those who can’t hear, there’s an element of appreciation that inspires creativity, ingenuity and a manifestation of the human spirit.

Through a wealth of services and resources, the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, which is a subsidiary of and overseen by Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Servicies (KDHHS) of Reading, helps individuals with hearing loss learn to listen, communicate better and generally lead fuller lives.

LCDHH client services manager and language specialist Karen Pfortsch, who has been deaf since birth, was interviewed for this article with the help of sign language interpreter Kandy Reyes, KDHHS’ president.

“Deaf individuals are happy being deaf,” said Pfortsch. “We can do everything except hear. We can drive; we can work. American Sign Language is a beautiful language. What’s important to us is our eyes and being able to see.”

At LCDHH, individuals with hearing loss and their family members are directly and indirectly connected with services like

sign language interpreters, sign language education, hearing aids, speech therapy, amplifiers, closed caption video phones, doorbell signalers, smoke and fire alarms, workshops, community activities and social events.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing also employ lip reading,

facial expressions and body language as ways to receive communications, but they are more informal and learned skills that are often less accurate than sign language.

“The goal is barrier-free services and community access,” said Pfortsch. “Our goal is to empower

It seems simple enough. The only way to swim fast is to swim fast.

But it in reality, it is much harder than that. Because one of the only ways to swim fast is through hard work.

“I think all of it depends on the work ethic,” said Molly. “If I didn’t push myself at practice, I wouldn’t be able to go fast. My coach tells us that a lot. In practice, you just have to go fast. That should translate over into meets, and it usually does, but sometimes you just have bad meets.”

A rising senior at Veritas Academy, which is located at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, Molly is one of the top swimmers in her age group, in the area and in the region. But Molly doesn’t compete for her school, or any school for that matter. She trains at and swims for the York

Jazz piano concert set for First Friday

Lancaster jazz pianist Colin Mekeel will be featured in a 30-minute concert on First Friday, July 5, at 8 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The program will include Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” Thelonious Monk’s “I Mean You,” and Chick Corea’s “Windows.”

• Leg Pain and Numbness • Backache

• Arm Pain and Numbness • Whiplash Injury

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call our office for an appointment.

At OMPH School, our Middle School curriculum includes wholesome classics such as “Where the Red Fern Grows,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Tuck Everlasing,” and more!

6th, 7th and 8th Grade students also experience a broad variety of specialized academic subjects to inspire and invigorate learning — above and beyond their core curriculum: Music/Food Culture Days, Revolutionary War Ships, Science Fair, National History Day, Quiz Bowl, Government Court Case Discussions, Stock Market, Instrumental Music, Art, Poetry and Performing Arts. And most importantly, the exploration and interpretation of their faith by learning about the Old Testament and the Teachings of Jesus!

Mekeel is the founder of the Temple Avenue jazz combo, which he started in 2011 while a junior in high school in collaboration with older friends who were in Temple University’s jazz program. Mekeel, 29, continues to play with Temple Avenue in ensembles ranging from duos to sextets. The group performs at concerts,

festivals, dances, parties, restaurants, and other events across southcentral Pennsylvania. Mekeel also performs as a solo pianist.

A graduate of HACC Lancaster Campus, the Manheim Township resident cites jazz pianist Ellis Mar-

salis as his biggest musical influence. Mekeel studies jazz piano with Kirk Reese and classical piano with Justin Badgerow.

Admission is free. For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.

limited language skills. Some might need to know how to get their pensions. We’ll get them connected to the right people. There are a variety of things we’ll do to get them help, and sometimes we do advocacy.”

LCDHH serves about 300 clients on a regular basis. According to numbers from a recent census, approximately 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.

“We are only scratching the surface,” said Pfortsch. “Some people have a mindset about deaf people from what they’ve seen on TV. They label all deaf people as ignorant. We have to work to prove ourselves because it’s considered a disability. But deaf people don’t think they’re disabled.”

KDHHS employs a total of 10 individuals, two of whom work out of the LCDHH office. LCDHH is a nonprofit that receives

funding from donations, grants and fees from its interpreter services.

“We are known in the deaf and hard of hearing community,” said Pfortsch. “Some organizations know us, and they connect their clients with us. They’ll work with us and collaborate with us. But some people don’t know the services are available. We’re here. People are welcome to call us.”

Home food preservation workshops slated

Penn State Extension will offer three workshops in Lancaster County this summer aimed at both new and experienced home food preservers. All workshops will take place in the training room in the basement of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

The programs will be Jams and Jellies on Wednesday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to noon.; Pressure Canning on Wednesday, July 24, from 9 a.m. to noon; and Introduction to Drying on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. Homefields expands job training program

Homefields has received a $22,000 Level Up & Launch grant from the United Way of Lancaster County. The grant will allow Homefields Care Farm to provide an agricultural workforce training program to four local high schools, building on a long-standing relationship with Conestoga Valley High School. Students will gain real-world experience at

the care farm, located in Millersville, where most farmhands have support needs. In all, the grant will help 40 students learn the basic skills that constitute the majority of entry-level farm labor tasks. These skills are transferable to other growing environments like nurseries and greenhouses.

The United Way will also match Homefields’ fundraising efforts dollar

for dollar through Friday, Nov. 8, with a potential impact of $66,000.

Homefields is a 19-acre nonprofit organization that provides jobs, homes, and life options to people with disabilities. Its community-supported agriculture (CSA) program grows certified organic food for more than 135 families per season.

In its heyday, the Reading Company was a multifaceted industrial giant. Originally established as the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1833 to transport anthracite coal, the pioneering 94-mile line evolved into a large corporation serving eastern Pennsylvania as well as New Jersey and Delaware. Operations included coal mining, iron making, canal and sea-going transportation, and shipbuilding. With its complex of shops for locomotive and car building and repair, and constant advances in railroad technology, the company held a position of leadership in the railroad industry for over a century. YMCA club team, yearround, sometimes as much as three or four hours a day.

“It’s very, very hard at practice,” said Molly. “You can’t be with the group I’m with and not have a good work ethic. If you don’t (have a good work ethic), you’ll fall behind.”

“I’d say there’s 11 of us, and they’re very important to me,” Molly continued. “With the girls, they’re like my best friends. I’ve trained with them for a long time, and I race them every day. It’s a tight-knit group. It’s a really good team culture.”

Backed by the support of those teammates, Molly captured a pair of firstplace medals at the YMCA National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in North Carolina in April. Molly was crowned the champion in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke and finished fourth in the 200 individual medley and eighth in the 400 individual medley.

Partly through her performances at YMCA nationals and partly through her overall individual ranking on the college recruiting website Swimcloud, Molly has received Division I scholarship offers from the University of Wisconsin, the Ohio State University and Indiana University. She recently verbally committed to continue her athletic and academic careers at Wisconsin. She has yet to decide on a major.

Molly began swimming when she was 7 years old. When she was 12, she began swimming for the York YMCA Swim Club.

“At my first practice I didn’t know any of the strokes and I almost quit,” said Molly. “But I figured out how to do them and I realized it wasn’t as bad as I thought. If I ever feel like that, I remember I wanted to quit and where I’m at now.”

“My whole school year pretty much revolves around swimming,” Molly continued. “But I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it.”

“The biggest part of the breaststroke is having a really strong pulling kick,” said Molly. “But I think the reason I’ve gotten faster is that I’ve minimized my strokes per lap.”

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.

Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
