Pig Roast Benefit Will Help Build Recovery Center By Ann Mead Ash
In 2018, TTC/Potter’s House held its annual pig roast at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River. The purpose in choosing that location was to dedicate the property with plans to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction, called Still Waters Recovery Center, on the site. This year, the organization, a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions, will hold the event at West Earl Community Park, 189 S. State St., Leola, because permits have been granted and construction has begun at the Still Waters site. The pig roast benefit will be held on Saturday, July 27, from noon to 4 p.m. Vans will be available to take attendees for tours at the Still Waters site a short distance away. For the more adventurous, kayaks and canoes will be available to paddle upriver to the site. The schedule for the drop-in experience will include

Around The World In Four Hours Cavod Campers To Present A limited budget or scant “High School Musical Jr.” vacation time does not have to mean a dismal summer. In fact, local folks may virtually go around the world in just four hours at the 24th annual Global Fair set for Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Hosted by Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), Global Fair is an international missions and culture event, but it has been updated for 2019. It will still include information about other cultures, opportunities to talk to mission workers and hear their stories about God at work around the world, international food from a wide variety of countries, and activities for children. Long before Cavod’s musical theater camps begin, the students who are participating are cast in a show, receive the script, take part in a read-through, and begin to learn their lines. “On the first day of camp, (students) come with the
dialogue memorized, and then we choreograph and polish,” said Cordell Huyard, who oversees the camps for Cavod and is directing Disney’s “High School Musical Jr.,” which will be performed by students taking part in the camp being held from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to See Cavod Campers pg 7
Campers who make up the cast of the Cavod musical theater camp’s production of “High School Musical Jr.” met for a read-through before camp began. The campers will present the show at Cavod Theatre on July 27 and 28.

Country, Hard Rock Are The Next Grand “Sounds Of Strasburg” Opening Lancaster County native Jess Zimmerman and her band will take a break from their national tour and perform as part of the Sounds of Strasburg concert series on Saturday, July 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held in the outdoor amphitheater at Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg. The Jess Zimmerman Band is known for a mix of show-stopping country and hard rock. The band released its debut album recorded in Nashville in 2016. The group has been traveling around the country presenting concerts at a variety of venues and events, including select NASCAR races. A talented singer and songwriter, Zimmerman has said that her music was influenced by country artists such as Martina McBride, Sara Evans, and Carrie Underwood. “We know that after the Jess Zimmerman Band takes to our outdoor stage, Strasburgians and other concertgoers will have something to talk about,” said Mark Arbogast, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which hosts the Sounds of Strasburg concert series. “Country and rock are

I’m sure Zimmerman and her band will grow their fan base in the Strasburg area after this performance.” As always, concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on the soft-turf and terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Those who wish to eat a pre-show picnic meal may use picnic tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. Folks may bring their own fare, but the foundation members encourage visitors to patronize food vendors who will be on hand that evening. A variety of foods, cold beverages, and Italian water ice will be available for purchase. The concert series will continue with shows on Saturdays, Aug. 3 and 17. Admission will be open to the general public free of charge, thanks to the generosity of local concert sponsors. The park’s main parking lot is located at 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg, and is reserved for handicappedaccessible parking. A golf cart shuttle will be available for disabled guests. Ample parking may be found along Precision Avenue. “ … and to recognize that there is a way to respond. We are not hopeless or helpless.” At 3 p.m., baptisms will occur in the river that runs through the park. Hoover explained, “It’s a culmination time of us recognizing that in order to find wholeness there is a necessity to put the past behind … and to connect with God’s saving grace as the higher power that we need in order to overcome the issues of the past, the roots of addiction, and to find promise and hope for the future.” The meal, which will be served throughout the event, will include roasted pig with Mama Elaine’s Almost Famous Sloppin’ Sauce, assorted side dishes, beverages, and desserts.

The construction of Still Waters will be the culmination of a 15-year dream for the ministry. The plan calls for two buildings that can each house eight clients as well as a director’s home and a pavilion. Phase one of the building plan includes the first group home and the director’s house. Phase two includes the second group home and the pavilion. The organization hopes to have the first group home completed and functioning by January 2020. Hoover noted that at TTC/Potter’s House treatment does not focus solely on an individual’s addiction. “We keep … indicating that we don’t just see the addiction as the problem,” explained Hoover. “There are
factors that contribute to why some people resort to chemicals. Our purpose is to help individuals find freedom from the factors that led them into addictive behavior.” Rob Weatherholtz, associate director for TTC/Potter’s House, sees the pig roast bringing together members of every facet of the community, including business owners, church, members of the military, bikers, families, and government leaders. “Everyone is involved,” said Weatherholtz. “It is the whole kingdom working together.” He noted that the atmosphere of the pig roast reflects a certain strength. “There’s a presence at that event that is undeniably the spirit of God working,” he said. “It’s just powerful.” Hoover agreed. “It’s an expression of God’s heart for the community to pull together,” he said. “This is our problem, so we will have to pull together to become part of the answer.” Attendance at the pig roast is by suggested donation. More information about the event may be found at www.transitiontocommunity.com/pigroastbenefit2019. Readers who have questions may call or text Weatherholtz at 610-718-6249 or Lanny Millette at 717-826-1154.

Showstopping numbers include “Stick to the Status Quo” and “Breaking Free,” which will feature the two leads joined by the entire company, along with “We’re All in This Together.” Although campers are familiar with the music, Huyard noted that some of the songs are not easy. “The boys have to sing very high and the girls low,” said Huyard. “For developing voices, that can be challenging.” Hannah Stone will serve as music director for the show, and Cavod instructor Julie Haney will choreograph the dance numbers. Huyard chose the Disney Channel favorite for a number of reasons. Among them, he likes how the musical delves beyond the surface of high school life. “It pokes fun at all the high school stereotypes,” said Huyard, referencing jocks, geeks, and those who have enthusiasm for music and theater. “As you go deeper, there’s more than that. There are (students) who feel they have to fit into this one group, but this show explores how you can be a combination of things,” he explained. “I related to that in high school.” For those unfamiliar with the show, Huyard described it as “Hairspray,” “Grease,” and “Footloose” smashed together. “It’s a sanitized Disney version of that,” he said. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

about careers in the arts. For 4-H members, projects can be used for Showcase. A fee has been set, and 4-H membership is not required. 3 p.m. each day at Cavod in New Holland. The camp will culminate with the show being presented in the Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, and at the same times on Sunday, July 28. The plot of “High School Musical” focuses on two teenagers - Troy Bolton, played by Noah Durling, and Gabriella Montez, played by Emily Andersen - who have never tried out to be in a show before. Gabriella is a shy, geeky math whiz, and Troy is a basketball star. “The (campers, who are ages 10 to 18) have grown up watching (‘High School Musical’) and listening to the music,” shared Huyard. “The characters are relatable.” The story opens when Troy and Gabriella meet at a ski lodge on New Year’s Eve. They sing karaoke together and exchange phone numbers. When the students return to school, Troy notices Gabriella in his homeroom and learns that she has transferred to East High School. Both decide to try out for parts in the school musical, and, despite a few mishaps, both are offered callbacks for the lead characters. At this point, Sharpay Evans, who will be played by Annika Locke, and her twin brother, Ryan Evans, played by Ethan Sommers, decide to interfere with the auditions and eliminate competition for the leading roles they aspire to fill. The show boasts 10 songs, many which are high in energy.

But there will also be new events and exhibits that are intended to be family-friendly, fun, and interactive. “One new feature is a world stage that will feature a range of entertainment,” said Kaylene Derksen, development director and member of the events committee. “The always-popular Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will sing international musical selections, and the Harrisburg STEP group will give a lively performance. There will be Korean music, drumming, and dancing as well as several other international acts.” A highlight for children - as well as adult visitors - over the years has been the alpacas brought by Eastland Alpacas. The fiber animals will return to Global Fair again. Joining the alpacas will be “residents” from the Nature Center at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, which may include snakes, turtles, lizards, a rabbit, and a bird. Children will have the opportunity to earn free ice cream through a scavenger hunt while they are also learning about the world.

Another change to Global Fair is a different layout. Rather than organizing the fair into geographic regions as in the past, there will be four new areas: The lively Global Village will feature workers from around the world and various community organizations. The Adventure Zone will have the petting zoo and children’s activities. The World Stage will offer entertainment throughout the day. The International Food Court will sell food from more than a dozen places. “The food is a favorite part of the fair for many people,” Derksen commented. “To be able to enjoy amazing food from East and West Africa, Nepal, Latin America, or Europe in the same location is quite unique. From injera to pinchos and from stroopies to hot dogs, you’ll find it at Global Fair.” EMM president Gerry Keener pointed out that one of the purposes of Global Fair is to promote understanding of other cultures and people. “The more exposure and knowledge we have of others who may be different from us, the more our worldview expands,” Keener remarked. “This is especially important for
Somali refugee Mustafa Nuur (second from right), representing his cultural exchange startup Bridge, sold Somalian food to Tim Charles (left) at Eastern Mennonite Missions’ 23rd annual Global Fair last year. Filsan Omar, also from Somalia, assisted at the booth. children. I believe when there’s more opportunity for appreciation and awareness, it can result in increased kindness and love for one another.” Parking will be free of charge, and admission will be by donation. Proceeds will be used to fund the fair in future years. Folks who attend Global Fair will also receive a bit of a bonus. “It’s a bit of a well-kept secret that visitors to Global Fair may also enjoy the 1719 Hans Herr House
and Museum and the grounds, including the Native American longhouse, without the customary admission fee,” Derksen said. For more information about Global Fair, readers may visit www.emm.org/globalfair. EMM is headquartered at 53 W. Brandt Blvd., Salunga. Its mission is to cross cultures, engage the world, and make disciples of Jesus Christ. To learn more, folks may call 717-898-2251 or visit www.emm.org.

Soccer Team To Compete At Nationals Smucker Authors New Book Xtreme Girls Soccer recently advanced to US Youth Soccer’s Presidents Cup U17 National Championship. Xtreme Girls Soccer is a travel soccer team based in Lancaster County within the Rage United Soccer Club. Just two years old, this team of high school junior and senior athletes represents eight school districts and three counties. In its nine-game stretch leading up to the national level of competition, Xtreme remained undefeated and its defense allowed only two goals. The team won at the eastern Pennsylvania state level in the spring at United Sports in Thorndale and advanced to the regional level. There, 43 teams from 15 states, from Virginia to Maine, competed to reach the Eastern Regional Championship tournament in Charleston, W.Va. Xtreme was undefeated in its five games at the regional championship, and five Xtreme players were on the
list of the 15 top scoring girls in their age bracket. Xtreme will be one of four teams in the United States competing at US Youth Soccer’s Presidents Cup U17 National Championship. Xtreme’s members have been preparing both on and off the field for the competition, including raising funds to offset the cost of the trip. Xtreme is coached by father and son Jim and Austin Wright and assistant coach Scott Reighard. The team’s record to date boasts 28 wins, three losses
and two ties, which includes an undefeated Indoor League Championship, being the undefeated reigning champions in the team’s spring EDP soccer league, and many tournament rankings from Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania tournaments. Team members have recently drawn inspiration from the success of the USA women’s team in the World Cup and from Lancaster’s Inferno Rush, of the United Women’s Soccer national league, which has its home field at Millersville University.
Shawn Smucker of Lancaster has written a new book, “Light From Distant Stars, which was published by Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. The novel takes a look at how trauma
affects people’s lenses on past and present events and the path to rediscovering grace and hope. Smucker’s debut novel, “The Day the Angels Fell, won a 2018 Christianity Today Book Award.

Safety Vest Frolic Planned The community is invited to join Fairmount residents on Friday, July 12, at 9:30 a.m. for a Safety Vest Frolic in the Crest View Gathering Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the east side of the Fairmount campus. Kay L. Moyer, safety nurse educator from the Cooperative Extension Service, supplies the materials to make vests and assemble kits to donate to local schoolchildren who walk or bike on back roads. Those who would like to help cut pieces of Velcro or reflective tape for the vests or assemble the cut pieces into kits are invited to the frolic. Anyone not able to attend the frolic but interested in helping in their own home is asked to call 717394-6851. Due to increased demand, there is a great need for more people to sew, as well as for someone to cut fabric for vests. Donations are needed also to purchase additional materials for more vests.
As a sophomore, he received the Outstanding Achievement in Accounting Award from the Maryland Association of CPAs and, as a freshman, he earned The Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze award for his achievement in community service, physical fitness, special skills, and adventurous journey. Smith also received The Frank and Margaret Malone Award for Excellence in Foreign Language given at the senior investiture and honors convocation on May 24. He landed a full-time job after graduation with JP Morgan Chase and Company in Newark, Del., where he interned in the Global Finance and Business Management Program under the Corporate and Investment Banking division.

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, the community is invited to gather at Mulberry Art Studios to experience an evening of music and poetry. Organizers hope that the event, titled “Meditations on Loss,” may offer the opportunity for a little healing for those who are grieving. The program will be a meditation on the tragedy of life, loss, and time, transformed by music, nature, and poetry. Justin Hopkins will read two poems: Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art,” a villanelle about the art of losing, and Donald Hall’s “Without,” a poem without punctuation on the loss of his wife. Christopher Brooks, violin, and Patrick White, bass, will interweave music among these poems, performing solo violin, solo electric bass, and violin and bass together, culminating with Bach’s “Sarabande” in D minor and Elliott Carter’s “Mnemosyne” for solo violin, which he wrote in memory of his late wife. The inspiration for this event
Bassist Patrick White will be among the performers during “Meditations on Loss,” which will be held on Tuesday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios.
