Power Packs’ superpower is silencing growling bellies
BY JEFF FALK
Power Packs.
Sounds like some sort of special energy concoction. Some kind of sustenance that invigorates superheroes, enabling them to do amazing things.
Some things are exactly what they seem to be.
“The name (Power Packs Project) comes from the pack of food we provide to help kids succeed in school and have academic success,” said Brad Peterson, Power Packs Project’s executive director. “We want to empower families to help them make good nutrition
decisions. Studies have shown that children need nutrition early in life to have their brains fully develop. We’re providing that nutrition. Studies have always shown that kids sitting in school with empty bellies can’t learn.”
A Power Pack is a meal kit that includes the recipe and ingredients for a simple, single meal, as well as some basic staples like healthy snacks, fresh produce and milk, to help families over the weekend. Located at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Suite 102, Lancaster, Power Packs Project distributes and delivers its food mainly on
Wednesdays and Thursdays in advance of the weekend.
“One in eight kids in Lancaster County is food insecure,” said Peterson. “They may not know where their next meal is coming from, and the numbers continue to rise. It’s kids your kids go to school with, it’s kids of the people you work with, it’s your neighbor’s kids. Who we serve are kids who are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals at school. Families can sign up for a week, a month or for as long as they need assistance.”

Recently, James Seese, who died in December of 2011 at the age of 69, completed an incredible journey home. It was a journey filled with respect and honor, one that captured the essence of his life.
It was a passage made possible by the sacrifices of others, not unlike the ones Seese had made
himself. It was a trek supported by the American Legion Riders and the Ephrata chapter of the national organization.
On June 30, the cremated remains of Seese were returned to his descendants in Ephrata. A United States Army veteran, Seese had served his country as an artillery mate in Vietnam more than 40 years before he died.

Chris Haefner understands Mother Earth. He appreciates the precious gems hidden just beneath her surface. And he wants to pass on his acquired expertise to others.
It’s that spirit that led Chris and his wife, Catherine, to found the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) and in turn LCFMC’s
annual Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza.
“(Fossils and minerals) represent our world and life on Earth from when it began to now,” said Chris. “People are fascinated with precious gems because they’re beautiful and valuable. Generally, people know about (fossils and minerals); our culture is everywhere. Some people like it because it’s grassroots. I think it’s more relevant now

Last school year, Power Packs Project distributed a total of 440,000 pounds of food through 95 sites and deliveries. Power Packs receives donated food from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg and
through partnerships and collaborations with other organizations.
“There are a lot of misconceptions that it’s an urban problem,” said Peterson. “But it’s an urban, suburban and rural problem. There are a lot of people out there struggling with food problems. It’s hard for some to comprehend that people are going hungry.”
Power Packs Project,
which was founded in 2005 and was incorporated as a nonprofit four years later, is manned by a staff of five full-time employees and a part-timer. Much of the organization’s packaging and delivery work is performed through 6,000 hours of annual volunteer commitment.

After his service to our country, Seese worked as a truck driver for 42 years. “It was so important to his family for him to have a final resting place here,” said Scott Williams, director of Ephrata Chapter 429 of the American Legion Riders. “I hear about so many veterans who die without a family. I think it’s important to come home and be with the ones you love.”
From Seese’s home in Alabama to Ephrata, Seese’s cremains were escorted by more than 100 motorcycle-riding members of the American Legion Riders at various times and places along the way. A native of the Ephrata area, Seese had been one of the founders of American Legion Riders Chapter 155 in Bynum, Ala. “I didn’t know him, but
FREE VACCINES
from the little I got from his family, he was dedicated, and he was patient,” said Williams. “He loved his country. He was a hard-working man. He loved that motorcycle community life.”
Seese’s 780-mile journey home began on June 5. From Alabama, Seese’s escorted procession went to Tennessee and Virginia, then to West Virginia and Maryland before reaching Pennsylvania.
Seven members of the Ephrata American Legion Riders met the convoy of motorcycles at the intersection of routes 501 and 322 in Brickerville and accompanied Seese on the final few miles of his trip.
“The mood was solemn, and the transfer was dignified,” said Williams. “(The procession) was unique in the way it was held. Only American Legion Riders did the escort.”
“I’m thankful I got to be a part of it,” he added.
Once the procession reached the American Legion Cloister Post 429 at 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata, Williams presented Seese’s remains to his granddaughter Amanda Starver. Seese’s remains were to be interred in a family cemetery.
“If you have freedom in the United States, you should thank a veteran,” said Williams. “I think it’s important to recognize every veteran who served his country.”
“Sometimes as a chapter,
we go up to the (Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital) and play bingo with the residents,” Williams continued. “Sometimes we get the feeling we’re the only ones coming to see them. I think some of those guys were forgotten. It feels good to honor their service and make sure they know they’re remembered.”
Ephrata Chapter 429 of the American Legion Riders was founded in 2018 and currently includes 22 members.
“Our goal is to help veterans, POWs (prisoners of war), MIAs (those missing in action), their families and ours,” said Williams. “We ride for all.”

Local author explores the beauty of Amish gardens
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Lancaster County is widely known for its large population of Amish residents and other members of the Plain community.
Horses and buggies are an iconic part of the area’s distinct character, and although the Amish are especially fond of their privacy, local residents and tourists are able to observe several customs that are unique to the modest group. But there are many Amish traditions that few people outside the Plain community are familiar with, including the topic of Beth Oberholtzer’s new book, “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County.”
Oberholtzer’s latest work explores the time-honored Amish tradition of cultivating a kitchen garden, which is maintained by the women of the household to serve a variety of purposes. The gardens are used to feed large families with a diverse range of vegetables, fruits and herbs that serve as integral parts of family recipes, many of which have been passed down through
generations. The kitchen gardens are also utilized as places for members of the household to plant flowers and foster different types of artistry and creativity.
“One of the pleasures of researching this book and talking to the gardeners was learning how the gardens are really portraits of the women who create and sustain them,” Oberholtzer said. “It is how they nourish their families, a way to connect with their children, and an expression of their own creativity.”
Oberholtzer had the idea to write “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County” while she was visiting local Amish farms and conducting research for her previous book, “Working Horses of Lancaster County.” Oberholtzer said she noticed that each Amish home included a large garden, and she began to learn about them from the wives of the horse owners she was interviewing. “I got an inkling of their responsibilities and joys in gardening and preserving food for their families,” Oberholtzer added. “Some information
I gleaned was common across most gardens, while some was unique to a particular gardener.”

NEW WAY TO DO LAWN WORK!
Oberholtzer will discuss “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County” on Thursday, July 25, at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. The free event will begin at 6:30 p.m., and no registration is required to attend.

“When We Climb Trees” explores allure of gaming and screentime
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Catch the world premiere of a youth musical, “When We Climb Trees,” at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The show will be performed at 2 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.
The activities are designed for fun, but it should be noted that learning could occur.
Also on display at the show will be a rare fossil specimen of Hylonomus Iyelli, believed to be the world’s first reptile. In addition, the show will include a light-refracturing demonstration by a scientist and a presentation by a tinsmith.
Nearly 1,000 visitors are expected to attend the extravaganza over its two days. Proceeds from the event will go toward LCFMC’s operating expenses and activities.
“It’s families with kids who are interested in paleontology and geology,” said Chris of the expected visitors that day. “It’s an enthusiastic crowd of people who come, and then you have the camaraderie. It’s a very lively atmosphere. People anticipate it every year. This is our forte; this is what we do. There’s a whole stream of history people don’t know because it’s not taught in schools.”
The fossil and mineral extravaganza will also feature a mine tour where kids bearing flashlights can find mineral samples. Youngsters may also appreciate interactive adventures in a geology learning center.

Open Houses:
After first being introduced at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, LCFMC’s Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza moved to Farm and Home Center four years ago.
“(LCFMC is) a very noble thing to be involved in,” said Chris. “When you’re part of a club, new ideas will spring from it. We get to meet other clubs and other club’s people. If you like minerals and fossils, there’s nothing like it. It’s not like going to a museum and looking at what someone else found. You found it.”
Chris and Catherine Haefner founded LCFMC in 2013, and the club initially involved 12 members. Today, LCFMC’s membership numbers 130 fossil and mineral aficionados.
LCFMC meets on the last Thursday of every month at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville.
For additional information on LCFMC, search for “Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club” on Facebook.
“When We Climb Trees” tells the story of a tightknit group of friends who struggle with the conflict between sharing real-life adventures and succumbing to the draw of gaming devices and screentime.
“This show is really about finding balance between time to play, pretend, be a kid and be with friends with the ever-present allure of screentime and gaming,” said Steven Courtney, who wrote the show. “I find it interesting to observe the youthful cast as they ‘pretend’ to bring this ‘play’ to life through their hard work yet willing spirits. Collectively, there are so many elements of teamwork, collaboration and planning to produce this playful, upbeat show with a rather serious undertone. More and more studies are showing the addictive power of devices.”
Courtney, who is the producer, songwriter and playwright of the show through Sun Hill Productions, worked in partnership with Kami Deppen of Big Dream Players, who is directing the show and served as costumer and set designer. The pair held auditions earlier this year for local youths to record the musical’s soundtrack.
“The recording of the
soundtrack demo was super fun, and it went as good as we could have hoped,” Courtney recalled. “We used the demo versions of the songs to share with the cast. After the cast selection process, we provided the soundtrack for actors to rehearse with prior to our official rehearsals. The instrumental parts of the soundtrack will be used in the live show, and the cast will sing live vocals for the performance.”
The cast of “When We Climb Trees” is primarily youths ages 10 to 16 from Lancaster and York counties.
This is the first youth musical Courtney, a singer-songwriter, has written, but he knows it won’t be his last.
“I am presently developing a new musical themed around my song “Steven the Pirate,’” he shared. “I’m having a blast exploring the options for the storyline. There are a few other ideas in the vault as well. I do think I’ll stay in the ‘youth musical’ lane for moving forward.”
He hopes audiences will enjoy “When We Climb Trees,” noting that it will be performed in Landis Hall, a state-of-the-art production theater at the Junction Center.
“This show is all-ages friendly and will run around 65 minutes,” he said. “Bring the whole family.”
Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance at www .thejunctioncenter.com/ when-we-climb-trees.

Wool contest
versatility of wool. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool.
The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors will provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each category. The winners in the junior and senior categories will
be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool Contest in Scottsdale, Ariz., in January 2025. The adult winner will submit his or her ensemble, along with a video of the contestant wearing the outfit, for judging at the national level, and one winner will be selected to attend the national contest.
The goals of the contest are to promote the
beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning, and weaving with wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; to help participants develop life skills, including being responsible for oneself, being a good sport, and accepting judges’ decisions; and learning about and appreciating diversity.
There is a registration fee, plus a testing fee per fabric or yarn used. Registrations are due no later than Tuesday, Sept. 3. All who register will receive a piece of wool yardage. To request the registration form and other information, contact Linda Siegel, state director, at 717-274-1197 or linda@ lebaweb.com.
