Lampeter-Strasburg

Middle school students will present “Rock of Ages”

Martin Meylin Middle School will present its 2024 musical, “Rock of Ages,” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5, 6 and 7, at Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s performing arts center, 1640 Book Road, Lancaster. Doors for each show will open at 6:30 p.m., and the musical will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door for a set price.

School will present the youth edition of the Broadway musical, which will incorporate the same amount of iconic music, ’80s fashion and nostalgia as its adult counterpart, but without any content that may not be appropriate for children.

“The music is near and dear to my heart, and we thought it would be a fun show for our students.”

“Rock of Ages” is a jukebox musical that will take audiences back in time to the 1980s, featuring classic rock songs by famous artists such as Styx, Journey, Europe, Bon Jovi and Pat Benatar. Martin Meylin Middle

“Rock of Ages” begins with the story’s narrator, Lonny, who will be played by Cole Lyons, welcoming audience members to a renowned venue called the Dupree Room. Lonny introduces Drew, an employee at the venue and aspiring rockstar who will be played by Segen Perez-Valle. Drew meets a new arrival to the Sunset Strip named Sherrie, who will be played by Millie Ambrose. Sherrie left her hometown in Kansas to become a star in Los Angeles, and Drew helps her get a job at the Dupree Room. Meanwhile, the city’s mayor, who will be played by Carson Beiler, plots to redesign the Sunset Strip and to demolish the Dupree Room.

The scene is set for a showdown as the musicians fight to defend their stage, pursue dreams of fame and navigate romance and heartbreak in the world of rock ‘n’ roll.

The show’s director, Memory

D’Agostino, chose “Rock of Ages” as the 2024 musical to offer students and audience members an experience unlike recent productions. Last year, the middle school presented “Anastasia,” a show with a heavier tone that

Strasburg’s many historic buildings and idyllic homes are among the area’s most unique attractions. During any season, groups of tourists drive from as far as New York to vacation in the picturesque town, surrounded by hundreds of acres of postcard-worthy farmland. But during the holiday season, Strasburg adopts a particularly festive atmosphere as community members decorate their homes and businesses for Christmas. Every December, the Strasburg Heritage Society highlights specific buildings in the area through its Holiday Home Tour.

The 13th annual Holiday Home Tour will take

Christmas is approaching quickly, and the Strasburg community is gearing up for a full roster of holiday events and activities. Although many of the area’s Christmas traditions have been observed for decades, many local organizations and businesses have combined their efforts in recent years to offer the community a holiday celebration to remember.

The annual Strasburg Christmas

Tree Lighting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Strasburg Borough Office, 145 Precision Ave. During the event, the Lampeter-Strasburg Area Woman’s Club will offer complimentary cookies, and refreshments will be available to purchase from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. and Robino’s food trucks. This year’s event is the largest tree lighting to date, and it will feature a variety of activities offered by local businesses and nonprofits such as Speckled

The cast of this year’s musical includes more than 60 students from every grade level at Martin Meylin Middle School.
One home featured in this year’s tour will include a large-scale model train display.

Families invited to sign up for dinner giveaway

The 38th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with Giant Foods and United Way of Lancaster to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster

County on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 21.

The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by Friday, Dec. 13, by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341. Volunteers will deliver the meals.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 2,700 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County during the holiday season.

In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue the partnership with Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the rising costs of the groceries for the food boxes. The project relies on individual donations for more than twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made at www.lcpn.org.

place on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will showcase seven unique buildings in Strasburg Borough, and each home will feature extravagant holiday decorations. This year’s tour will highlight both historic locations and modern dwellings, as well as three local churches. Proceeds will benefit the Strasburg Heritage Society and its ongoing efforts to preserve local history.

Tickets are available to purchase online and at Main Street Antiques, 2 W. Main St., Strasburg, and Specked Hen, 141 E. Main St., Strasburg, until the day of the event. On the day of the tour, tickets may be purchased at First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg. To buy a ticket

online, visit https://strasburgheritage society.org.

On the day of the tour, a variety of craft vendors will be stationed in First Presbyterian Church, and members of local Girl Scout troops will sell breakfast and lunch items. The church will also hold a holiday greens sale and a silent auction, which will feature gift cards and various items donated by local businesses.

This year, the Holiday Home Tour will highlight three homes that have not previously participated in the tour. The event will feature some buildings that date to as early as the 1700s and 1800s, as well as recently constructed homes with modern architecture styles. One stop on

the tour, a property that includes a historic barn formerly used to store tobacco, will feature an elaborate, large-scale model train display.

“Homeowners always really enjoy the tour; they get so many visitors who are so happy to see the houses and ask the owners questions,” said Laura Deevy, Strasburg Heritage Society member and chairperson of the Holiday Home Tour. “Some people are hesitant to open their homes at first, but they’re always glad they did by the end of the day.”

In previous years, the tour exclusively featured homes located

in Strasburg’s historic district downtown. This year, the Strasburg Heritage Society decided to include several stops outside of the town to highlight areas that have not been featured before.

Hen, Bespoke Brewing, the Lancaster County Art Association, and the Strasburg-Heisler Library. Live entertainment will include performances by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band, students from Sight & Sound Theatres’ conservancy and youngsters from Sunshine Corners Inc. day care center. A model train display assembled by Ben Styles will be set up in the borough office, where Santa will hand out small gifts to children after he arrives in a fire truck.

For many years, the annual Christmas tree lighting took place in Strasburg’s town square. In 2023, the event’s organizers decided to change the location to the Strasburg Borough Office to avoid heavy traffic at the square. The tree lighting is now a collaborative effort that is sponsored by the Strasburg Heritage Society, the Lampeter-Strasburg Area Woman’s Club and Strasburg Borough. Last year, a Christmas tree was planted at the borough office to serve as an annual holiday spectacle for years to come.

The Christmas tree lighting will kick off the weekend with its biggest event yet, but the festivities won’t stop there. Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC), 40 W. Main St., Strasburg, will host a Christmas market and cookie sale on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 20 vendors will sell a variety of handcrafted items at the church, including Christmas decorations, knitted accessories, jewelry, candles and original paintings. Homemade delights such as sand tarts will be available to purchase, and Robino’s food truck will sell additional refreshments.

The holiday fun will continue on Sunday, Dec. 8, with a Christmas caroling event at 6:30 p.m. Community members are invited to gather at Wesley UMC and bring a flashlight; groups will disperse from the church to sing on various streets around Strasburg’s town square.

“It’s a unique celebration that brings out a lot of different age groups, and it’s a little bigger and better than last year,” said event organizer Kay Graybill.

“With the new space at the borough office, we’re able to include more groups and activities. We want to do this more often to have activities that the whole town can come to.”

In addition to collaborating with other organizations to plan a full weekend of community events, Wesley UMC will host its annual Christmas pageant

at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14; an additional show will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15.

This is the 65th year the church will host the pageant, which will feature a live Nativity and narration of the birth of Jesus accompanied by music.

Stream relocation plans available to view

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view the online plans display for the Weaver Road stream relocation project in Strasburg Township. Current conditions include an existing watercourse, which extends along the northern roadway shoulder. During rain events, the stream frequently overtops its banks, resulting in localized flooding and erosion. The purpose of the project is to provide a sustainable travel way by reducing roadway flooding and the reduction of more frequent repairs to correct roadway erosion.

The project involves the relocation of the existing watercourse to its former pastoral alignment located a sufficient distance to the north of the existing roadway. Two existing drainage features, a 24-inch pipe and 30-inch pipe, will be replaced with a single 48-by-76-inch elliptical pipe to safely convey the peak stormwater flow and reduce sediment accumulation. The roadway profile will be adjusted to provide sufficient cover over the new pipe and improve surface water runoff. The roadway will additionally involve a full depth pavement removal and replacement. The road will be closed for approximately three months to all traffic while the road is being reconstructed. The proposed 2.3-mile detour uses Weaver Road to May Post Office Road to Sawmill Road.

The project is currently in the design phase, and construction work is expected to take place in the 2026 construction season.

A digital version of the information will be available to view online until Sunday, Dec. 8. To view the plans, visit www.penn dot.gov/District8, click on Public Meetings listed under the District Links heading, and choose the Lancaster County box and then the tile markedWeaver Road Stream Relocation Project.

The purpose of the plans

takes place during the Russian Revolution. While searching for a more upbeat production, D’Agostino and assistant director Julie Palmer realized the school had never done a jukebox musical before. D’Agostino and Palmer concluded that “Rock of Ages” would also give students an opportunity to learn about the trends and tunes of the ’80s, as well as give adult audience members a nostalgic blast from the past. “I’m a child of the ’80s,” D’Agostino said. “The music is near and dear to my heart, and we thought it would be a fun show for our students.”

In preparation for showtime, D’Agostino gave cast members homework assignments that involved listening to ’80s hits such as “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey and “The Search

Is Over” by Survivor. Students also scoured thrift stores for old band T-shirts for costumes, and they practiced using a landline phone with a long chord for the first time.

“We’re fortunate to have some really talented students both vocally and for acting,” D’Agostino said. “I love to watch their growth from the first rehearsal to where they are now - it’s pretty amazing.” Many of D’Agostino’s former students have continued to act at the high school level, including some Lampeter-Strasburg School District alumni who now perform at professional theaters in the local area and beyond. “We do what we need to build them up as actors,” D’Agostino added. “It’s a sort of proud mom moment to see them go on to theaters around the country.”

Fire company sets “Cookies with Santa”

New Danville Fire Company, 43 Marticville Road, Lancaster, will host Santa and Mrs. Claus at Cookies with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 7. Weather permitting, the fire company will have its antique fire engine and other props available for pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. A photographer will be on-site.

Donations will be accepted for the fire company. Attendees may bring their pets to the event.

Tree-lighting event scheduled

West Lampeter Township will host a Holiday Tree Lighting Community Celebration at the amphitheater at Village Park, 800 Village Road, Lancaster. As of Nov. 27, the event was planned for Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. However, if the Lampeter-Strasburg High School football team won its game on Nov. 29, organizers planned to move the tree lighting to Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the same time

and location.

This year’s celebration will feature live holiday music by the LampeterStrasburg High School band, hot chocolate and cookies provided by volunteer fire companies, fire pits for making s’mores, and a visit from Santa Claus on a fire truck.

For updates, search for West Lampeter Township on social media.

During the era that Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, the traditional English Christmas was celebrated as Yuletide, a period of gatherings, games, ghost stories, dancing, and dining with family and friends. Yuletide extended over the 12-day period from Dec. 25, which was mostly a day for religious observance, and culminating in Twelfth Night on Jan. 6, which was sometimes celebrated with a ball or an elaborate feast highlighted with a special cake. When gifts were exchanged at all, they tended to be small items or tokens of affection and
