SHINE brings lasagna to locals

Afew years ago, Crystal Smeltzer and Brian French, Lighthouse Vocational Services’ (LVS) senior management, were brainstorming ideas to get LVS participants out into the community in a way that would give back to local residents. LVS is located at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, and the organization provides vocational services for individuals with disabilities.

“They were thinking, ‘Everybody loves to eat, and Lancaster County is famous for food,’” said Michelle Coblentz, donor relations advocate with LVS. The co-workers hit on the idea of making and delivering lasagna to area residents who were struggling in some way. The effort came to be known as SHINE, which Coblentz said stands for “Sharing Hope In Neighborly Encounters.”

Until June 2023, two meals were being delivered each Wednesday, but as of June, two meals go out on Tuesdays as well. Each meal consists of a tray of lasagna to feed up to 20, along with a freshly made salad for

“When I commit to a goal, I want to see it through to the end,” said Sally Winchell, who was crowned Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023 in Harrisburg on June 4.

“With this pageant, I was all in.”

Sally first heard of the pageant last February when a friend, who served as Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America in 2021, invited her to a meet-andgreet. Sally met the current and past Pennsylvania queens, along with one who was a national winner. “It was fact-finding,” reported Sally, who noted any lady who has reached the

age of elegance - age 60 and up - is eligible to take part.

An application, including biographical information, was necessary to compete. Sally explained that the purpose is to give older women a “chance to display their inner beauty, talent, and elegance.” She added that the pageant honors the achievements of senior women and motivates and encourages them to utilize their full potential and share their positive outlook on life with others. “It’s not just a beauty pageant,” she pointed out.

“It’s more about your achievements, goals, and what you stand for. It gave me an opportunity to reflect.”

each person at the home where the meal is being delivered. “Meals go to people who are needing encouragement - maybe going through some kind of rough patch … whether it’s an illness, hospitalization, death of a spouse, or (they) just don’t have a lot of food,” explained Coblentz.

Denise Johnston, community participation services coordinator with LVS, explained that three participants and an LVS coach work out of two area churches that have partnered with the organization, switching back and forth between using the Trinity Lutheran Church kitchen and the kitchen at Bethany Grace Christian Fellowship. “The same group that purchases the groceries goes to the church and prepares the meal, and then they deliver the meal,” she stated.

At first, word-of-mouth was the best way to find meal recipients, but as the program has grown, Johnston requested names from sites where LVS participants volunteer in the community. More recently flyers with a QR code for comments have been delivered with the meal.

Melody Karick, memory care educator and consultant with Garden Spot Village, is wellacquainted with internationally known dementia expert Teepa Snow.

“I was blessed to be mentored by Teepa,” said Karick. “She does a great job of explaining (concepts and techniques). No matter what level of awareness you are at, she is easy to understand.”

Snow will return to Lancaster for

a second set of seminars after first offering a well-attended program in 2022. Sessions will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Rd, Lancaster. The morning session will run from 8 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon session will run from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

The Southern End Sluggers, a youth baseball team made up of players from Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Conestoga Valley, Octorara and Pequea Valley, recently captured the Essex Express Baseball Father’s Day Summer Classic.

“Last fall, we won three tournaments,” said coach Nate Galbreath. “This tournament made it four in a row. We have kids of equal talent, so we bat all 12, and every kid gets their time on the bench.”

The tournament was held in Essex, Md.

Concerts rescheduled

Two concerts at the Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park in Akron have been rescheduled due to rain.

Mitch and the Mood Swings will now perform on Sunday, July 30, at 6:30 p.m. The group will play music from the 1960s, along with rock ’n’ roll, soul and Motown. Mitch Mohler has been a singer for more than 50 years.

Additionally, the Rizzetta’s Tones concert has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m.

The concerts will be held at the Pavilion 2 bandshell in the park, located off North 11th Street, Akron.

The performances are sponsored by the law firm Haggerty, Silverman and Justice. People are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating and pack a picnic supper to enjoy while attending the free concerts.

The Sluggers opened with a 12-1 Saturday morning win over the Owings Mills’ Spartans. Later that evening, the Sluggers settled for an 8-8 tie against the Arlington All-Stars.

“The Saturday games were for seeding, so we went into the single elimination Sunday games as the second seed,” Galbreath explained.

Sunday morning, the Sluggers defeated In the Dirt 8-1 and in the afternoon pulled out a 4-3, come-from-behind win over the Blue Chips to get to the finals. There the Slug-

gers defeated the top seed, Tripletown Aces, 4-2 to claim the tournament crown.

“It was a total team effort,” said Galbreath. “We pitched well; made a lot of great plays defensively, including turning multiple double plays; and had some great throws home from the outfield to nail runners at the plate. Everyone put the ball in play, and we had very few strikeouts against some really good pitching,” he added. “We had multiple extra base hits, and we ran the bases really well.”

comfortable spaces. The afternoon session will be directed at health care and senior care workers, and it will delve into advanced assessment methods and tools for working with those in late stages of dementia.

Snow is an occupational therapist with more than 40 years of clinical and academic experience. She has developed

a trademarked model for understanding the progress of dementia and created the Positive Approach to Care training strategies. Karick emphasized that Snow’s presentations are effective because she gauges the audience and moves in the direction she feels will best serve them.

“One of the things she really stresses is the positive

approach and getting to know the environment and the surroundings,” said Karick, noting that taking a breath and assessing the unique approach required by the situation is paramount. “Look at what is going on with that person,” Karick explained. “Are they in fight, fright, flight?” Next, Karick said, caregivers should use their words, tone of voice, and facial expressions to make it clear that they stand in support. “Make it known you are on their side,” she said.

“I always leave with an ‘aha’ moment,” said Karick of Snow’s seminars. “It’s not always rocket science, but rather, ‘I never thought of it that way,’” added Karick, pointing out that the training can be used in situations beyond caring for someone with dementia. “It’s very (applicable) to everyday life,” she said.

For those who are new to understanding dementia, Karick said that it is an umbrella

term. “Think about flowers. There are petunias, roses. They are all flowers,” she said. “Dementia is not a diagnosis, and it is not memory loss,” she noted, adding that remembering whether or not you drove to a location might signal a dementia issue, whereas remembering where you parked your car generally does not. There is a per session charge with an extra cost for an optional lunch. Readers are encouraged to register at www.dementiafriendly lancaster.org. Last year’s seminars sold out.

The flyers ask meal recipients to suggest others who might enjoy being treated to lasagna.

The organization is now working with The Factory

Ministries in Paradise to provide meals to some clients, as well as looking to bring meals to people in retirement communities who could benefit from the interaction. Teams have also delivered meals to Revelations of Freedom Ministries in Blue Ball and to the Good Samaritan homeless shelter in Ephrata from December of 2022 through March. “We tried a couple other recipes, not just lasagna (for the homeless shelter),” noted Johnston.

Johnston estimated that more than 200 lasagna meals have been delivered by SHINE since the program began. She pointed out that the LVS participants benefit from the opportunity to serve. “The participants make a connection,” she said. “They get so excited knowing they are blessing someone else, so when they get to see the person they made the lasagna for and visit with them it’s really rewarding.”

Sally Winchell

Looking back, Sally noted that many of her achievements helped her build toward taking part in the pageant. Raised in Bowmansville, she moved to Terre Hill as an adult and was active in New Holland, teaching at a local dance studio and later owning Class Act Dance Studio. She became a personal trainer and started her own nutrition counseling business, and she competed as a female body builder. In 2012, Sally moved to the Millersville area with her husband, George, and she is employed at Bright Side Opportunities Center specializing in senior health and fitness.

Sally said that the pageant

included a brief interview with the judges; a talent competition, for which she performed a professionally choreographed jazz dance; and an evening gown competition, during which each contestant presented her philosophy of life. Writing her philosophy intrigued Sally. “When I was preparing I spent a lot of time thinking about why I was put on this Earth. What do I do? What do I represent?” she said. In the allotted 35 seconds, Sally discussed her daily chances to motivate and inspire others through strength training and healthy eating. “(Those are) the keystone to healthy senior years,” she said. “We need not accept

what we think old age should look and feel like. We need to be strong, energetic, and engaged in life.” Sally noted she is proud of what she wrote. “It’s what I live,” she said. “I live to bring a better life to others.”

When Sally was named Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023, she received a crown and a sash to wear during public appearances. She will represent the state in the national competition in Atlantic City, N.J., from Sunday, Oct. 15, through Thursday, Oct. 19. Sally is available to speak to women’s groups or to help with events. She can be reached at sallya winchell@gmail.com.

A piece of history restored

In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention. Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac.

Harris contacted the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations partnered with LancasterHistory to devise a plan to restore the burial site.

Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko Cemetery Monument Services to start the process of resetting and stabilizing the gravestones.

Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones were moved aside, the cranes were used to pick up the bases, allowing the Dominguez and Mosko to dig down and level the ground with stone and marble chips. The base and headstones were then moved back to their proper place and sealed to prevent water from causing any further destabilization. Dominguez then cleaned all three of the grave markers.

Harris and Dominguez installed a commemorative marker at the gravesite following the restoration. The marker

offers information on the Smith family and the significance of its role in history. Smith was a close friend of Thaddeus Stevens, and she worked as his housekeeper. The two were heavily involved in the Underground Railroad and actively worked for the liberation of slaves during the 19th century. “There have been questions about their relationship and lots of misinformation throughout the years, including varied accounts of where (Smith) is buried,” Harris said. “This is another phase of continuing to find accurate information on two pivotal members of American history.” A dedication ceremony for the new historical marker was held on June 28.

LancasterHistory is currently in the design phase for a large project to create the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Smith Center for History and Democracy in downtown Lancaster. The building will be located on the corner of South Queen Street and Vine Street, and it will be part of the Lancaster County Convention Center. In the new installation, visitors will have a chance to learn about Lancaster’s role in the Civil War and the lives of Stevens and Smith, as well as others who were involved with abolitionist efforts. “These people were considered fringe characters with no grounding in reality. They pushed the envelope until they brought more people to their side,” Harris said. “We want to convey the importance of these people’s lives and what it really meant to be an abolitionist and combat the horrors of slavery.”

LancasterHistory hopes to begin construction on the project by the spring of 2025. For more information, visit www.lancasterhistory.org.

Library celebrates grand opening

More than 100 members of the Lancaster community gathered on June 27 to celebrate the grand opening of the new location of Lancaster Public Library (LPL) in Ewell Plaza. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by a community celebration at the library, including self-guided tours of the new facility and familyfriendly activities like face painting, balloon twisting, and a special children’s story time.

Former WGAL anchor Kim Lemon was the master of ceremonies. Executive director Lissa Holland and board president Aaron Sherman thanked

the individuals, businesses, foundations, and government entities that funded the new facility. Capital campaign chair Henrietta Heisler announced that the campaign achieved its minimum goal of $10 million. Fundraising will continue through the end of 2023 to build LPL’s endowment and strengthen the organization for the future.

Since opening on June 1, LPL has welcomed more than 17,500 people into the stateof-the-art building at 151 N. Queen St. The building is fully ADA accessible, open and bright, and equipped with

After the pandemic, when people were often unable to gather to share meals together, High View sought to choose a VBS theme that reflects on and teaches about the hospitality and gatherings in which Jesus spent time with family, friends and acquaintances.

Each evening, an offering will be received for Mercy Chefs. This faith-based, nonprofit disaster and humanitarian relief association provides restaurant-quality meals to victims, volunteers and first responders in natural disasters and national

emergencies, and it partners with other organizations to provide food service in underserved communities across the country.
