Free program affords CV kids early learning opportunities

It’s educational. It’s social. It’s developmental.

But perhaps the best thing about the Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts program is that it’s free. Currently, there are openings for Conestoga Valley 3- and 4-year-olds to participate in the Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts program being hosted by local nonprofit Steps to Success in conjunction with the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD).

Michele Harbaugh, Steps to Success’ executive director and founder, emphasized that Pre-K Counts is geared toward families experiencing financial hardships.

“This is a free program,” she noted. “If you’re paying for child care, you might not have to through this program. If people are out there struggling and not knowing about (the program), this is an opportunity. Conestoga Valley sends out information about the program, but if there are new families who just moved in to the district, they might not know about it. We want to make people aware of the program.”

There are currently 10 openings for CVSD 3- and 4-year-olds in Pre-K Counts at Leola Elementary and one at Brownstown Elementary. There are also 10 openings at Smoketown Elementary, where the program is being hosted by Owl Hill Learning Center.

Fritz Elementary, Conestoga Valley’s fourth elementary school, currently has a waiting list for the program.

“Every child’s brain is a sponge,” said Harbaugh. “Three- and 4-year-olds are very much in the curiosity stage. They’re in the process of experimenting. That’s how they learn, trial and error. (The program) is giving them the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them.”

There are guidelines and restrictions associated with Pre-K Counts, which runs concurrently with the school year calendar. Participants’ families must be within 300% of the federal poverty level.

Philip Warner is newest Blazer with passion for education

It’s trite but true. It really does take a village to raise a child.

Parents, teachers and clergy are among some of the most obvious villagers. But there are others less hands-on who also play a major role in the development of kids.

Philip Warner, Lancaster Mennonite School’s (LMS) newest administrator, is one of those behind-the-scenes guys.

“Obviously, we have a number of goals for education as a culture,” said Warner. “We want to have an educated society. I want to invest in the formation of skills and students’ character and faith. My goal as an educator is aligned with my personal philosophy and my professional goal is to invest in as many students as possible.”

Following a search and an interview process, Warner was

hired as LMS’ new assistant superintendent in March and officially took over his new duties on July 1. In his role, Warner will assist and be overseen by LMS superintendent Michael Badriaki, and he will assist and oversee other LMS administrators, provide human

HOPE International is golfing for purpose-filled dollars

The annual HOPE International Golf Outing isn’t a professional golf tournament. But the players will be playing for money - the kind that can change people’s lives.

“Money can be used as a tool, as long as it can be used in the right way,” said Jeff Rutt, founder and chairman of HOPE International. “The power of

enterprise is learning to be responsible. It allows charities to be very healthy. There’s power in money being used in the right way.”

The 24th edition of the HOPE International Golf Outing will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 13, at three courses: Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon; Wyncote Golf Club, 50 Wyncote Drive, Oxford; and the Woodlands Golf Course,

Fitness Court features all-in-one workout space

Featuring seven exercises you can complete in seven minutes, a new Fitness Court has opened in East Donegal Township. The court, created by National Fitness Campaign, is one of just 500 such spaces in the country and the only one in Lancaster County.

“For years, we’ve been looking at trying to develop something like this,” said Scott Kingsboro, assistant township manager, adding that he originally considered installing

a traditional fitness trail with various exercise stations along a path. When he discovered National Fitness Campaign and its all-in-one court, he was intrigued. He soon learned the company, which has a mission to change health outcomes in America, provided grant funding to help support the cost of the court.

The Fitness Court is located at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta.

It is open to anyone age 14 and up, and it features equipment for bodyweight

exercises including squats, push-ups, pull-ups and lunges.

Users scan a QR code, displayed on a wall of the court, to learn how to use the equipment.

“I truly think this piece of equipment is for anyone from age 14 to 99, because they can customize it or modify it to their comfort level,” Kingsboro said.

A push-up station, for example, features tips for beginners (“Apprentice”) to experts (“Savage”).

“The program follows the school district’s schedule, generally from 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.,” said Harbaugh. “The school district will bus the children to their home elementary school. They can ride the bus to school just like kindergartners. Steps to Success is offering wrap-around service at Brownstown Elementary. Parents can drop off as early as 6:30 a.m. and pick up as late as 5:30 p.m. We’re really trying to reach out to every single scenario.”

It looks like a learning center. Conestoga Valley is really trying to support these kids. The school district wants to foster up the children who are going to become their

While the Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts program is very representative of its mission, it is just a small portion of what Steps to Success does. Founded in 1995, Steps to Success employs 48 full-time and 19 part-time workers and serves 324 students across all of its programs in the Conestoga Valley and Donegal school districts.

“Steps to Success is always the home away from home,” said Harbaugh. “We’re trying to be the second family for kids, no matter what program they’re involved in. Children are the most important thing.”

Lancaster Mennonite’s first day of school for the 2024-25 school year is Tuesday, Aug. 20.

“I’ve been welcomed by the staff and I’m already enjoying the work,” said Warner. “I am really excited about the vision and mission of Lancaster Mennonite. It resonates with me as an educator and a person of faith. I feel a strong alignment with their values. This particular work sits well with my previous work and areas of expertise and things I’ve very passionate about. Plus, we have some historical connections with the school. My wife (Carrie Denlinger Warner) is an alumna, and our family has been connected with Lancaster Mennonite for years.”

“We are excited about the depth of experience and knowledge Phil will bring to the assistant superintendent role at LM,” said Badriaki. “He has a deep

passion for a Christ-centered education, values, Anabaptist teachings, restorative justice, and is a servant-leader.”

Before coming to LMS, Warner was a co-superintendent at Alliance Christian School in Berks County. Over the past 20 years of his education career, he has been involved with leadership, curriculum development, the integration of restorative justice models and meetings with staff, students and parents.

A graduate of Dover Area High School in York, Warner possesses a master’s degree in education from Liberty University, a bachelor’s degree in music education from West Chester University as well as his Pennsylvania K-12 Teaching Certificate and Principal Certificate.

“Not unlike so many educators, I can point back to a time in high school and my high school choir teacher,” said Warner of the origins of his education career. “In addition to giving me a passion for music, she also gave me a passion for immersing myself in others.”

to attend an opening-day launch event on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 3 p.m. to try the Fitness Court and learn about upcoming community wellness events and programming.

East Donegal Township is working with GEARS in Elizabethtown, which will provide “ambassadors” to promote the court and demonstrate how to use the equipment.

Mike Brubaker, a township supervisor, said he’s excited to see the court put to use. He recommends that people stop by the site

and scan the QR code and then go home to review the exercises before tackling the equipment. “That’s just what I would do, but people can come here, scan the code and start their workout if they’d rather do that,” he explained. To get started, visit www.nationalfitnesscampaign.com.

He thinks the Fitness Court will be a nice addition to a park that already includes tennis and pickleball courts as well as walking and running paths.

“We think it’s important to provide healthy options

of things for people to do,” Brubaker said. “Not everyone can afford a monthly subscription to a health club. This is free and outdoors. It just provides another thing for people in our community to do that’s healthy.”

While the grant covered some of the cost of the Fitness Court, the township is looking for businesses, organizations or individuals who would like to become sponsors of the court. For more information, contact East Donegal Township at 717-426-3167.

Exhibit to feature items from the ocean

The North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, recently opened an exhibit titled “Shallow Seas.”

The exhibit showcases specimens of sea life, shells, and plants from the more than 250,000 objects in the North Museum’s collection. These items depict life that is present in the Caribbean Sea, the coastal Atlantic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean, and how each has developed traits to survive and sometimes thrive in its

environment. The exhibit includes items that have not been displayed since the 1960s, and it is the first exhibit to be fully curated from North Museum’s collections.

Visitors may lend their creative touch to a collaborative artwork project by coloring pictures of underwater life and adding them to a depiction of a coral reef.

The exhibit is self-directed through signage and bold graphics, which are presented in both English and Spanish. “Shallow Seas” will remain a main exhibit of the North Museum through May 31, 2025.

Now in its 72nd year, the North Museum impacts thousands of local students and their families annually through its education initiatives in the museum, in the community, and at home. Programs include field trips, early childhood education programs, summer camps, STEM Sisters, the Science and Engineering Fair for middle and high school students, and many other programs designed to create access to free and reduced-cost STEM learning opportunities and to strengthen the foundation of youths in the Lancaster community and beyond.

“The vibe is going to be very much about engagement and learning more about the purpose (of HOPE International),” said Rutt of the atmosphere of the day. “It’s all about fellowship and getting to know others who are like-minded. If I’m engaged in some sort of outreach, it creates a different type of purpose. It’s not about how good of a score I can get.”

Organizers of the HOPE International Golf Outing would like to draw up to 375 players total to the three courses. In conjunction with two separate sister golf outings, the goal is to raise a total of $1.4 million for the work of the faith-based nonprofit, which includes lending programs, Christ-centered financial training, saving programs, discipleship and Biblebased training - all of which possess the power to break cycles of poverty and to change the plights of future generations.

Over the 27 years of its existence, HOPE International has raised $280 million and lent $1.7 billion.

“There’s poverty everywhere, but it’s all relative,” said Rutt. “There are needs everywhere. We’d love to come alongside everyone. ... We believe a holistic approach is really impactful. Here’s a quote from one of our clients: ‘It’s really hard to focus on your prayer life when you’re hungry.’”

Headquartered at 227

Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, HOPE International has a reach that has steadily expanded over its existence to provide services for those in need around the globe. HOPE International conducts 15 major regional fundraising events annually.

Since its inception in 2000, the HOPE International Golf Outing has raised more than $7 million for the mission.

“Yes, it’s golf, but it’s not about the golf,” said Rutt. “It’s what happens from the golf. While we’re having fun hitting that little white ball, we’re looking to drive out poverty in all of its forms. Twenty-three years ago, we started using golf as a vehicle. It just kind of stuck. We found it was a good way to engage sponsors.”

“I think some of the sponsors’ motivation comes from the why behind the mission,” continued Rutt. “There’s a large network of folks learning about HOPE International. Hopefully, there’s going to be some folks who are interested in going on trips. The camaraderie and fun of the day is just sprinkled in. We’re going to bond together over a great cause.”

Solid Rock Camp, held at Hinkletown Mennonite School, offered activities for children and an introduction to sports for older students over the summer.

According to Jeremy Horning, who directs Solid Rock Camp each summer at Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) with his wife, Casey, the three weeks of activity are all about introductions. “First, we want to introduce kids to Jesus if they don’t know Him,” said Jeremy. “That’s most important to help grow their faith and build friendships in a positive community.”

Check out day,” explained Jeremy, who noted that basketball, soccer, and volleyball are featured for boys and girls, with flag football just for boys and field hockey only for girls. “We like to say it’s an introduction to different sports,” shared Jeremy, who added that about 60 students attended each sports camp.

Solid Rock Camp is now in its 12th year. When Jeremy

and Casey, who are both sports lovers, first held the camp, they were following God’s lead, but they did not know specifically where. “We felt God wanted us to do something with kids, (but) we weren’t sure what that would be,” said Jeremy. The couple pitched the idea of a sports camp to HMS administration and, with the school’s blessing, went to bat. “We were hoping for

25 to 30 kids, and we got 85 the first year,” recalled Jeremy, who noted that school administration has remained positive about the camp, and HMS teachers have gotten involved as well. Jeremy believes offering a variety of sports disciplines at camp is a healthy alternative to sports-specific camps. “We see more and more specialization as kids choose a sport, and that’s all they do,” he said. “We purposely have them try

four different sports so one day they might be an expert, and another day they might be learning.” Team devotions, group games, and worship are also part of the camp curriculum. “It’s a sports camp, but for kids who just want to be active,” Jeremy said. “We get kids with a variety of interests, and we like it that way.”

Turnpike Commission warns of scam

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) advises the public that a smishing scam is being attempted. The scam aims to deceive people so they will share their personal financial information to settle outstanding toll amounts.

The texts purport to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services and center around urgent requests to settle unpaid tolls; the texts claim that the recipient will be charged an additional amount if an overdue balance is not paid. Similar scams have recently been reported by toll agencies across the country.

People who receive an unsolicited text, email, or similar message suggesting

it is from the PTC or another toll agency should not click on the link. E-ZPass account holders and Toll By Plate customers can use approved safe methods to check their accounts such as the official PTC E-ZPass website or the PA Toll Pay app available from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store.

Those who receive a fraudulent text may file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. The site is dedicated to sharing information on internet crimes across law enforcement agencies.

To learn more about how to stay safe from scams, visit www.paturnpike.com/ about-us/security-fraud.

Overholser family reunion posted

The Overholser Family Association invites Stauffers, Stouffers, and Stovers to its 2024 reunion, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2 and 3. The reunion will focus on the ancestry of the Stauffers, which can be traced back to the first century and the imperial Hohenstaufen family of the Holy Roman Empire.

The event will begin with a meet-and-greet at 6 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Yoder’s Family Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. Attendees may visit the buffet or order from the menu, and they will pay for their own meals. The gathering will run until 8 p.m. to allow adequate time for fellowship. A short address will be given on why the Stauffers are important to the reunion.

The main reunion will occur on Aug. 3 at St. John’s Center Church, 432 Reading Road (Route 625), Terre Hill. Attendees should arrive between 9 and 10 a.m., and coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. A potluck luncheon will take place at noon, featuring sandwiches, fruit, and cold drinks. The festivities will include the reading of a letter from James and Kathy Overholser, who have not been able to attend the past few years. Attendees may bring information related to genealogy, and the items may be displayed in the air-conditioned meeting room.

Charlotte and Matt Kulp will present a monarch butterfly exhibit, and Harlan Overholt, a vineyard owner from California, will give a brief review of his trip to Oberholz last summer. Dennis L. Oberholtzer will give a talk on his book, which focuses on the burial shroud of Jesus. Oberholtzer will also sign copies of his book. The book is being critiqued by one of the original shroud committee members, who lives in the United Kingdom, and it was previously critiqued by former state Rep. Thomas Armstrong.

Armstrong will present a slideshow presentation about his ancestor Abraham Brubaker, a descendant of the 1738 immigrant Henry Overholt. A group photo will be taken, and more time will be provided for fellowship. For more information, call 223-316-1897 or email overholserfa@gmail.com.
