Building A Community Of Recovery By Ann Mead Ash
OUTDOOR CONCERT
Rodriguez Takes On New Role pg 5
For several years, TTC/Potter’s House has hoped to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On July 14, TTC/Potter’s House staff, area representatives, and friends of the ministry gathered at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, to dedicate the property to that cause and break ground for the recovery center, to be called Still Waters. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. The organization is in the midst of a capital campaign seeking to raise $2 million for Still Waters Recovery Center, which will include a 30- to 90-day intensive
program in a controlled environment. Wendell Metzler and Ryan Forbes opened the ground-breaking event by telling their story of an unlikely friendship between a repeat offender, Forbes, and a police officer, Metzler. As Forbes finished speaking, he began to compare the fallow ground near the river to the fallow ground in the hearts of those fighting addiction, noting that the new center will provide the opportunity for the seed of Christ’s love to be planted in those hearts. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, echoed Forbes’ thoughts as he noted that Still Waters can be a place that tells a new story of recovery from addiction. “I declare here today the need for a higher power (to overcome addiction) is an absolute necessity, and that higher power is Jesus Christ, our Lord,” said Hoover. Samuel Mwangi (front), pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, offered the prayer of dedication at the July 14 ground breaking for Still Waters Recovery Center. Still Waters is a ministry of TTC/Potter’s House.

Campers at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata now have an added opportunity to learn about the wonders of creation as they traverse the 110 acres the camp offers. In pursuit of his Freedom Award, Trail Life USA trailman David Mease, a member of Trail Life Troop PA 0316, which meets in Lititz, built four outdoor kiosks he calls Creation Discovery Stations to help teach campers about certain insects, trees, animals, and birds, the majority of which are considered native to Pennsylvania. In January, Mease contacted Woodcrest Retreat executive director See Freedom Award Project pg 4
Proceeds from the annual FoodStock Music Festival on July 28 at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Manheim will benefit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), as well as Water Street Mission, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, and other local food banks and pantries. Trail Life USA trailman David Mease presented one of the four Creation Discovery Stations he built for Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata in pursuit of his Freedom Award, the highest honor a Trail Life trailman can earn.

Telling others about why the FoodStock Music Festival raises funds to support area organizations that are working toward eliminating hunger is easy for Tom Hayden. As one of FoodStock’s

and Wendell’s can happen to a lot of people.” Rep. Dave Zimmerman of the 99th District said that the Still Waters setting brought to mind the need for quiet spaces. “In Scripture, Jesus would find a secluded place (to pray),” he said. “For all those who struggle with addictions, there is hope.” As representatives and friends of the ministry stepped forth to take hold of shovels and turn the earth, Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, offered the prayer of dedication. “We are trusting God that this property is not just buildings and a curriculum,” said Mwangi. “We are trusting God for a divine power to change every life that steps on this property, (where) the name of Jesus will be honored as lives are changed.” Following the dedication, five clients of TTC/Potter’s House gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the river adjacent to the property. “This place (can) become a place of transformation and recovery, and today we are turning soil for a new day.” Rob Wetherholtz, associate ministry director for TTC/Potter’s House, whose family had owned the land along the river for decades, spoke of a vision the Lord gave him for the property as a place of healing for the lost and addicted in need of a way home. “This is where we come to the green pastures beside the still waters,” he said, referencing both the 23rd Psalm and the name of the facility. Jay Myelin, member of the TTC/Potter’s House board, noted that the capital campaign that the organization began a year ago has raised $750,000. “We have a long way to go yet, but we have a great start,” he said, adding, “But it’s not about the numbers and buildings; (it’s about the staff’s) heart and vision for transformation of lives. … There is nothing we do any more rewarding than that.” Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District told the gathering that he grew up not far from the site of the ground breaking. “In Harrisburg, we know there’s a problem with opioid addiction, and we are trying to do things legislatively,” said Greiner. “But a ministry like this can mean a story like Ryan

he had created a design. He began spending one evening a week in a shop at Woodcrest building the stations. By early May, the four were completed, representing more than 60 hours of planning and preparation and another 70 hours of construction. Each station uses a series of interactive tiles to teach campers about nature. Each tile contains a photo. When a camper lifts the photo, information about the bird, insect, or tree is underneath. “I included basic information for each (bird, insect, and tree) and their habits and habitats,” explained Mease. “The animal tracks (station is) a little different because I put a photo of the track on the front and the picture of

Cliff Martin about the possibility of completing his servant leadership project at the camp. “When (Mease) approached us about a project here, (the stations) came up as a great thing to tie into what we do with summer camp,” said Martin. Mease said that Martin had photographs of similar stations that Mease could use as a prototype for his own. Mease, who credits his father, Dave, for suggesting the name “Creation Discovery Stations,” began fundraising to purchase supplies by sending out sponsorship request letters to family members, friends, and fellow church members between January and April. By early April, Mease had raised $1,100 to purchase supplies, and

Eloy Rodriguez of New Providence has been appointed middle school principal and high school associate principal at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Lancaster campus for the 2018-19 school year. Rodriguez is currently the principal at the New Danville campus. A new principal for New Danville is being sought as Rodriguez begins his new role at the Lancaster campus. The Lancaster campus serves more than 500 students in sixth through 12th grades at 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Among these students are youths from more than 30 countries, for whom Lancaster Mennonite serves as a boarding school. Rodriguez brings 15 years of experience to the role of principal. He began his teaching career as a third-grade teacher in Luray, Va. He also brings experience in project-based learning, an interdisciplinary approach that invites students to acquire knowledge and skills through investigation, integration, and synthesis of a complex question, problem, or challenge experienced in the real word. In 2009, he joined the Lancaster Mennonite team as the fifth-grade teacher at the New Danville campus, where he became the principal in 2013. During his nine years at the New Danville campus, Rodriguez and colleagues helped to implement the Blazer Buddy leadership program, a school learning garden, a composting and recycling program, a schoolwide restorative discipline plan, student-led conferences in second- through fifth-grade classes, and a reading program for thirdthrough fifth-grade students. Rodriguez has given leadership to the new MakerSpace that will open in the coming school year, giving students an opportunity each week to work through the design process as they collaborate, innovate, tinker, create, build, prototype, and practice problem solving related to realworld problems. Rodriguez also helped to organize a five-week Teaching Anti-Racism training for Lancaster Mennonite faculty and staff. Rodriguez graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a prekindergarten through sixthgrade teaching certification. He earned a Master of Education with a principal certification from Millersville University. Rodriguez and his wife, Becky, are the parents of three children, two of whom are students at Lancaster Mennonite School. The family attends East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church.

Bible2School from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer
During the 1979-1980 school year, the Manheim Central School Board gave permission for a released time religious education program to begin for fifth-graders - whose parents approved - to be released from class for one hour each week to learn about the Bible. Known then as Manheim Central Weekday Religious Education
(WRE), the program has evolved through the years and officially became known as Bible2School in 2011, according to assistant director Stephanie Smith. Today, second- through fourth-grade students at elementary schools in the districts of Manheim Central, Conestoga Valley, Elizabethtown, Manheim Township, and Lancaster have the opportunity to participate in

weekly Bible teaching during the school day thanks to Bible2School. Each year Bible2School hosts a celebration event for its volunteers and supporters. As the organization gears up for its 40th anniversary celebration fundraiser in March 2019, staff members would like to invite individuals who have been students in the program - in the beginning when it was referred to as WRE or in any subsequent years - to share their stories and memories so they can be included in the celebration. Details for the annual celebration will be forthcoming as organizers are still in the planning stages. “Teaching Truth and Inspiring Hope for Generations will be the theme of the evening, and Smith said organizers are hoping to hear from as many alumni as possible so that the stories of God at work through the program can be shared with the audience. Individuals may share
their stories and memories no matter how big or small - of how WRE or Bible2School played a role in their life by contacting Smith at 717-3050987 or stephaniesmith @bible2school.com. “We’re hoping that alumni will be in touch, because we would love to incorporate their stories, whether in print, video, or sharing in person, Smith explained, noting that organizers would love to include as many other people’s memories and stories as possible. “We’ll be honoring the last 40 years of what Bible2School has been and launching what’s next. One Bible2School staff member who went through the program and has a child who also completed it will be sharing at the event. “It’s already touched two generations in her family, Smith remarked. “We’re seeing some generational layers, and we would like that to continue. Smith mentioned that some local folks still refer to
Bible2School as WRE, and many of the local churches in Manheim that supported it in its early years are still involved today in working with Bible2School to provide biblical education opportunities to public school students throughout Lancaster County and beyond. A newspaper clipping from March 1979 lists the following churches as members of the Manheim Central Christian Education Council, the group that put in the request for a released time program: Manheim Brethren in Christ, Chiques Church of the Brethren, East Fairview Church of the Brethren, White Oak Church of the Brethren, Hope Episcopal, St. Paul Episcopal, St. Paul Lutheran, Erb’s Mennonite, Erisman Mennonite, Trinity Evangelical, Jerusalem United Church of Christ (UCC), St. Paul UCC, Chiques United Methodist, Ruhl’s United Methodist, and Salem United Methodist. According to the article, the council formed as a result of a decision
by the Manheim Ministerial Association to explore the possibility of offering released time religious education. To learn more about Bible2School and ways to support its mission to teach the Bible to public school children and show them their unique value in Jesus Christ, readers may visit www.bible2school.com. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 14th annual Celebration of Achievement on June 3 in the Johnston Auditorium of the Lancaster Masonic Center. A total of 10 children were graduated from the program. This year marked a total of more than 100 graduates from the program. Heather Hinkel, director of the center, addressed the graduating students, returning students, tutors, and governing board, thanking them for the work each provides to the program. Each graduate was given an keepsake autograph bear, as the bear is the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.’s mascot. Students thanked their tutors and the board of governors for the service they received. The Center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of eight centers in Pennsylvania that provides tutoring at no charge to children from elementary through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. The method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. See Children Graduate pg 8

One circumstance - one illness, the loss of a spouse - can change it all. I think a lot of people take that for granted,” he reflected. 12,000 pounds of food to the Ephrata Food Bank. “We overwhelmed our local food bank with donations. This was in May, and I said, ‘This ought to last you through the year,’ and the guy said, ‘Actually, this won’t even last us past July,’” recalled Hayden. “That’s when it hit me how big the need was.” “This is a problem that flies under the radar. Hunger has a certain stigma to it,” said Hayden, noting that although it is a widespread issue, people oftentimes do not want to admit to struggling with it. Hardworking people often still face the choice of deciding between heat for their homes or food for their families, and Hayden believes that is something everyone can pitch in to help change. Hayden, Bobby D. Jones, and Todd Fuginetti formed FoodStock, a nonprofit organization, in 2011 as a way to combine their shared passion for music and helping others. Every summer, the organization hosts the FoodStock Music Festival as a way to raise funds for area organizations working to end hunger. This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, in the Barn and Barrel Courtyard at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The music festival will include performances by Steel Radiance, Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra, Benjamin Vo Blues Band, solo guitarist Rob Reese, and Hydroponic Philharmonic. Headlining the event at 5 p.m. will be Vinyl Groov, a Harrisburg-based band that plays everything from
original artwork, a wedding photography package, tickets to area attractions and restaurants, and more. To purchase tickets to the FoodStock Music Festival, interested individuals may visit www.foodstockpa.org. Admission for children age 12 and under is free. Proceeds from the 2018 event will primarily benefit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), as well as Water Street Mission and other local food banks and pantries. “We have a main beneficiary every year, but then we break it down and choose other organizations, too,” Hayden explained. More than 100 second-grade students at Washington Elementary School in Lancaster received healthy snacks and advice from Bill Coder (standing, right) from the American Heart Association (AHA) before their summer vacation. Representatives from the AHA and a bank sponsor handed out apple slices and piggy banks and encouraged the students to make healthy choices, including staying active, choosing healthy snacks, and saving money. Through programs such as Teaching Gardens and the new Kids Heart Challenge, the AHA aims to give children the tools to build a foundation of healthy habits and empower their families to do the same. The AHA benefits from the Lancaster Heart Ball, an annual gala that raised more than $318,000 for the organization in 2018. For more information about the next Lancaster Heart Ball, set for Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, readers may contact Bill Coder at 717-207-4234 or bill.coder@heart.org.
