Celebrating Aaron’s Acres at 25

When Risa Paskoff’s children were small, she almost never got to read the Sunday paper, but on one Sunday in early 1989, Risa noticed an article about Janiece Seldomridge, who was raising her autistic son, Aaron. “I said to the kids, ‘Give me a second to read this story,’” recalled Risa, who specifically remembered one line from the article that read, “(Seldomridge) and a group of parents want to start a camp program (for their children with disabilities).” “I needed to find out about that,” Risa said. “That was my dream.”

Risa met with the group of parents several times and eventually became the director of Aaron’s Acres, an organization that bears the name of Seldomridge’s son and provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs. That first summer camp in 1989 welcomed children ages 5 to 9. Aaron’s Acres now offers both summer camp and

school year programs for those ages 5 to 21.

On Saturday, Aug. 26, starting at 1 p.m., the organization will hold Aaron’s Acres’ 25th anniversary celebration at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. “It will

be a celebration of the community,” said Risa. “We are where we are because of the support that we get from everyone in the community.”

The celebration will be divided into two parts, with a carnival-themed family fun event happening from

First Back-to-School Bash planned

The autumn celebrations held at Faith Evangelical Congregational Church have been evolving over the last few years. “(Originally), we did Trunk or Treat (in October),” said Heather Leicy, who has been helping to organize the event for several years. For September 2022, the church switched to a Fall Fest, including food and games for children and adults.

“Now (we will hold) a Back-toSchool Bash instead,” said Leicy. The bash will be held at the church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on Sunday, Aug. 6, from See Faith Church pg 4

1 to 4 p.m. featuring inflatables, bounce houses, games, food trucks, face painting, and popcorn. “All (area) families are invited. It’s open to everyone,” said Risa.

For the evening event, doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the celebration for

guests age 18 and older will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The Mama Tried Band will play and a mentalist from Philadelphia will stroll through the gathering interacting with guests. Food will include heavy appetizers and beverages by

Three decades of ASSETS

“Historically, we’ve done a lot of work in Lancaster city,” said Kevin Nofziger, business development officer with ASSETS. “But more of our clients are coming from all over the county.”

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, ASSETS will celebrate 30 years serving Lancaster with an event at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, called ASSETS at 30, may be purchased at https://assets-at -30.eventbrite.com.

Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) in an effort to create stateside opportunities for entrepreneurs. “We are a CDFI (community development financial institution),” said Nofziger, who noted the organization plans to expand beyond Lancaster County. ASSETS can offer loans from $1,000 to $50,000. Three main lending products are available: a small business loan of up to $10,000; an impact loan of up to $30,000; and a special Reimagining Our Community loan of up to $10,000 for one year at 1%, accompanied by a 30% matching grant.

Students to present “Mean Girls”

Popovsky Performing Arts Studio, in partnership with the Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS), will present the regional premiere of “Mean Girls: High School Version.” Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 5, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Gardner Theatre at LCDS, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

Adapted from Tina Fey’s 2004 film, “Mean Girls” focuses on high school student Cady Heron. Cady may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her

for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. To rise to the top of the popularity pecking order, Cady must take on The Plastics, a trio of frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. When Cady and her friends devise a “Revenge Party” to end Regina’s reign, Cady learns the hard way that you cannot cross a queen bee without getting stung. “Mean Girls” was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.

The show is directed by Michael Popovsky. The creative team also includes Meg

Schmidt, Christine Healy, Steffan Bomberger, Greg Woodbridge, Casey Potvin, Cody Allyn Page, Clayton Dombach, Andy Green, Elaina Mayer, Christyn Rutter, and Hong Tran-Speros.

The cast consists entirely of students age 18 and under from Lancaster County and the surrounding area. Carly Evans stars as Cady Heron, and the other cast members are Abby Leiboff, Alexandria Fernandez, Ava Rooney, Carly Geiter, Charlotte Caples, Dakota Schertzer, David Ferre, Delaney Woodbridge, Dhara Sundaram, Eden Marcott,

Emma Antonacci, Jeremy Andro, Maddie Stern, Maeve Sasse, Maeve Larrimore, Mallory McVey, Molly Ciecka, Oli Bodine, Sarah Zeigler, Sophia Do, Susannah Schelling, Titus Newswanger, and Zoey Groff.

This performance is rated PG-13 for sexual content and language. However, “Mean Girls” is intended to provide an opportunity for meaningful dialogue about friendships, social media, bullying, and other topics that adolescents face daily.

Each year, their year long journey together will be celebrated by an extraordinary outdoor adventure applying their skills and knowledge they shared, prepared and built together.

There is no cost to you - only your commitment. Costs are covered by this inspirational outreach program devoted to building your

son into a man. Every boy needs a father in his life; if not, the damaging statistics are staggering.

Awards presented to Scout leaders

The Susquehanna District, a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, held its annual awards dinner on June 14 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Willow Street. The annual dinner recognizes leaders who have exemplified the Scouting ideals and program in their Scout units or leadership within the district.

The District Award of Merit is the top volunteer award the district can present. Chet Bowen from Troop 84 and Fred Frey from Troop 146 received this award at the dinner.

He has served in many other volunteer positions within the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, as well. Bowen has been involved with Scouting almost his entire life, and he has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, is a Vigil member in the Order of the Arrow, and received the James E. West award.

Risa noted that silent auctions will be held during the afternoon and evening events, along with a Fund-aNeed opportunity. “Two parents will speak, and there will be a brief presentation (in the evening),” said Risa, who added that attire will be dressy casual. Tickets, which are necessary to attend either event, may be purchased at www.aaronsacres.org by Monday, Aug. 14.

Risa recalled identifying her first career choice at an early age. “When I was 9, I volunteered to help in the classroom for students with disabilities instead of going out to recess,” she stated. “When I was 16, I worked at a (Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA)) day camp for kids with disabilities in New York.” In that position, Risa

“I saw the power of focusing on therapy, communication, and socialization but in a fun setting,” she said.

After earning her master’s degree in social work, Risa worked in a hospital setting.

Not long after, she was rehired and commuted from her new home to the YMHA until her first child was born.
