Zion’s Community Water Slide Day is one cool event

There’s just something about kids and water and slides and summer. It feels like fun. It feels like community.

Zion Lutheran Church’s upcoming Community Water Slide Day is a unique event that’s built on those institutions. It’s one of four community outreach events that the church sponsors yearly.

“It’s not exactly a carnival, but there’s like a buzz,” said Keith Shetter, a member of Zion Lutheran’s evangelism team. “It’s a great way to escape the summer heat. There’s a lot to see and do. It’s well attended. It’s for young and old. It’s just a good time. The vibe is summer fun. People need to be there to understand.”

Located at 18 Quarry Road, Leola, Zion Lutheran Church will hold its Community Water Slide Day on Saturday, Aug. 10,

from noon to 4 p.m. The free wet and wild event will feature two 25-foot, elevated and hydrated slides - one of which is a racing slide - a splash zone, an inflatable obstacle course and a kiddie pool.

But that’s not all. The event will be enhanced by free hot dogs, popcorn and watermelon, live music, a magician, a juggler and Bible trivia. In addition, members of the East Lampeter Township Police Department, the New Holland Ambulance Association and a number of local fire companies and their apparatus will be on hand.

“It’s an opportunity for people who can’t afford a play day at the beach or at Hersheypark to have a day of fun in their own backyards,” said Shetter. “We wanted to reach everyone in the community who is less fortunate than us and give them something to look forward to. We live in a place

Compass Mark wants to be an ideological lightning rod and a guiding light in the community. The nonprofit approaches its mission through three guiding principles - “follow the science,” “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “the sooner the better.”

the behavioral part of it that can be controlled.

“Compass Mark can help you get to where you want to go in life; we can keep you on the right path,” said Teri Miller-Landon, Compass Mark’s director of programs. “There’s so much science out there on what leads kids to addiction. We’re not preaching abstinence. We’re trying to delay use as much as possible. We’re teaching them to make other

Storytelling Night slated

In a celebration of stories that transcend boundaries, Mennonite Life will host its annual Storytelling Night on Monday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m. at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Local storytellers Josef Berthold and Becky Hess will relate short-form anecdotes from their lives.

Berthold is the pastor at West End Mennonite Fellowship in

Lancaster. He and his wife, Brenda, have lived in Lancaster city for 30 years and raised their three boys there.

Hess is the human resources director at Eastern Mennonite Missions. She is married to Jack, and they have three adult children and three grandchildren.

Storytelling Night is free of charge. Mennonite Life welcomes donations to support its mission, which in addition to storytelling includes history conservation efforts.

A recording of the event will be available on Mennonite Life’s YouTube channel the following week.

National Night Out celebration set

The West Earl Township Police Department will hold a National Night Out event in Broad Street Park, 725 Broad St., Akron, on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. National Night Out aims to promote police and community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. This is the third time Akron and West Earl Township will host the annual event.

working together with others to help people who are having the worst day of their lives,” said Tim Hoerner, a driver, firefighter and past chief and president at Hand-in-Hand Fire Company.

“The success I had when I was president was because of the people around me. You need one or two good leaders and two or three people around them. If you have good leadership, the people will follow, and the money will follow.”

Hand-in-Hand Fire Company, which is stationed at 313 Enterprise Drive, Bird-in-Hand, is run by 65 volunteers - 50 or so firefighters, emergency responders and fire police and another 15 support personnel. But when Hand-in-Hand conducts some of its major fundraisers, that number can swell to 450 event volunteers.

“I think our relationship with the community is very good,” said Hoerner. “The events indicate that the community is not only accepting our direction but they’re also embracing it and supporting it. The people are always coming out and helping us, and we’re leveraging their talents and their time. With any organization, if they can solicit help from the community, that organization will be successful. The way we run the

organization, it’s not a task; it’s a way of life.”

That proactive, community-engaging approach, which was formally put to pen and paper and instituted in 2009, has led to a financially sound and fiscally stable fire company.

Hand-in-Hand’s two major fundraisers are its Lancaster County Carriage and Antique Auction in June and its Bird-in-Hand Half Marathon in September. But the fire company also conducts two chicken barbecues and a chicken potpie dinner each year and also receives donations and government grants mostly for fire apparatus and equipment.

The end result is that Hand-inHand’s financial ledger is more than $2 million in the black.

“We realized in 2009 that in order for us to be good at our mission and vision, we had to get good at structure,” said Hoerner. “We’re bucking the trend of fire companies across the state. They’re hurting for people and money. We feel like we have our house in order. We’ve built the groundwork for success well into the future. We think we’ve done some things other fire companies can look at.”

“If we could get to a point where we could rely on our investments, we’re not going to stop (fundraising),” he added. “This is what makes us a true volunteer fire company.”

Included in Hand-in-Hand’s four-truck firefighting arsenal are an $800,000 Pierce Velocity tank truck, a $460,000 Pierce Lance pumper, a $194,000 squad truck and a road rescue squad truck. Hand-in-Hand Fire Company, which covers a 10-square-mile rectangular area in and around Bird-in-Hand, responds to an average of 150 calls per year - structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical assistance and automatic alarms.

“Our mission is to provide emergency services, but you’ve got to go higher and deeper,” said Hoerner. “It’s about people and money. Everybody wants to be a part of something fun and successful. There’s something special when you’re a volunteer and you’re helping people.”

choices and to connect with people in healthy ways.”

Headquartered at 1891 Santa Barbara Drive, Suite 104, Lancaster, Compass Mark attempts to reach children in kindergarten through grade 12 before alcohol, drugs and gambling do. It drives its message home through workshops, skill-building, student assistance programs and good old-fashioned communication and interaction.

Last school year, Compass Mark connected with 8,000 kids in 66 schools from 28 school districts in Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester counties.

“Before I came here, I didn’t know what prevention was,” said Tim Steffen, director of development and communications at Compass Mark. “We want to make clear how prevention works. We’re actually saving lives. For every dollar spent on prevention, you’re saving $18 in the future. You’re saving taxpayers by nipping it in the bud.”

Some of the factors that put kids at risk for addiction include low commitment toward school, parental attitudes favorable toward antisocial behavior, low perceived risk of drug use and low neighborhood attachment.

“For kids 13 or younger who use any kind of substance, they have a 70% chance to develop an addiction in seven years,” said

Miller-Landon. “We use data to know what’s going on in our community. It’s things we need to target as we design our programs. It’s much, much easier to prevent bad habits from starting than to try and change them. That’s much of the thinking. Sometimes substance abuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system and a criminal record.”

Overseen by a board of directors, Compass Mark employs 20 full-time workers and about 20 part-time staff members, all trained to deliver the curriculum.

“A lot of people are skeptical about prevention,” said Miller-Landon. “But prevention works. It’s about talking to kids often and talking to kids early. When kids are younger, they’re sponges. They just soak it in. They’re at an age when they still think (adults) know what they’re talking about.”

Compass Mark was founded in 1966 as the National Council for Alcoholism, Lancaster County. Then the organization’s scope was broadened in the 1970s and ’80s to include a focus on preventing illegal drug use, and later gambling.

“We’ve evolved with the community,” said Steffen.

Slide Day from pg 1

in Leola that has several low-income communities. It’s really developed into a grand event.”

Members of Zion’s evangelism team came up with the concept of a water slide day 15 years ago. But not even they could’ve imagined what the event has evolved into.

“People look forward to it, and there will be other community partners there,” said Shetter. “I don’t know that there’s another water slide day around. I think it’s

kind of unique. It’s certainly special to us. We’ve embraced it as a way to give back. It definitely gets you pumped up to see the joy of those who are a part of it.”

Zion Church also sponsors a community movie night in the spring, a Trunk or Treat event around Halloween and a Christmas-themed event in November or December.

“This is the biggest event compared to the others we put on,” said Shetter. “As an evangelism team, we look for ways to serve the church and the community. It’s a way to engage in a really loving way.”

A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Zion Church is composed of 200 members. Karen Larson is Zion Lutheran Church’s pastor.

“The people who are there are definitely enthusiastic about serving God and others,” said Shetter. “We come to learn, and we’ve learned to serve. What we learn on Sunday we take out into the world. We want to engage in the community.”

Documentary screening set

A screening of the documentary “A Ride for Freedom” will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Lancaster County District Attorney Heather Adams will deliver opening remarks. Registration is required at https:// ARideforFreedom.eventbrite.com.

“A Ride for Freedom” documents the journey of an eight-person team of ultra-endurance cyclists taking part in the 2023 Race Across America (RAAM), along with the team’s support crew from the anti-child trafficking organization ZOE International. This 3,000-mile, nonstop transcontinental relay began on June 17, 2023, and took the cyclists from the California coast to Maryland over six days.

Through interviews and cinematic visuals, “A Ride for Freedom” showcases the physical and mental fortitude required to compete in RAAM. It also spotlights the team’s commitment to raising awareness of child trafficking.

The majority of the cyclists who participated are from Lancaster County; the participants were Nate Eakin, Matt Lapp, Tom Jordan, Craig Whiteford, John Glick, Kevin Quinter, Merv Beiler, and Jeff Conaway. They trained beginning in the fall of 2022, logging hundreds of hours of stationary cycling, road riding, and strength training. The team secured second place in 2023 and plans to ride again in 2025 to fight against child trafficking.

The idea for ZOE’s participation in RAAM ignited when Brad Ortenzi, ZOE’s Eastern U.S. regional director and team manager, visited ZOE’s campus in Thailand to meet the young trafficking survivors in 2014.

Ortenzi also serves as the coordinator of Lancaster and Berks County’s Human Trafficking Task Force. ZOE East Coast has established partnerships with county agencies and organizations to identify those vulnerable to trafficking. Through these collaborative efforts, ZOE aims to assist trafficking victims and at-risk youths in the southeast Pennsylvania region, offering a range of services, such as support for law enforcement during sting operations, trauma-informed activities, mentorship, and access to resources.

ZOE International is a global organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking through prevention, rescue, and restoration programs. More information can be found at www.gozoe.org.

Celebratin’ bacon

When Dena Krebs, marketing coordinator with Stoltzfus Meats, was looking for a way to celebrate the business’s 70th anniversary, she visited a festival in a neighboring town devoted to a special Pennsylvania treat made with chocolate and cream. “It got me thinking about the community aspect of it, and I thought ‘Why don’t we do something like that here, but base it on bacon?’” she stated.

The result of that research is the first Baconfest, which will be held in Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A variety of activities are planned, including demonstrations, a bounce house, yard games, and food trucks offering bacon-themed food items for purchase.

The event will kick off with the Bakin’ with Bacon entry drop-off from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “Jere Gish from WGAL will be one of the judges,” said Krebs of the competition, which is open to any baker and any baked good as long as bacon is an ingredient. The contest winner will be announced at 2:45 p.m.

At 10:15 a.m., an Intercourse Library representative will read “Don’t Forget the Bacon” to children and adults. “It’s a giant picture book,” noted Krebs.

Live entertainment at the event will include the DKers juggling at 10:45 a.m. and the one-man-band talents of Nick DiSanto at 11:30 a.m.

WJTL will begin a remote broadcast at 1 p.m. Big Boy Brass will perform at 4:30 p.m.

Tony Page, who works in product development for Stoltzfus, will demonstrate cooking Bacon-Wrapped Kielbasa Bombs from 2 to 2:30 p.m. “He’ll be giving away samples to those who come to watch,” shared Krebs.

A griller eating competition will be held at 3 p.m. Krebs explained that a griller is a sausage, but shaped like a hot dog. “That will be a lot of fun,” said Krebs, who noted the contest was inspired by the company’s participating in scrapple-eating competitions held at the Ephrata Fair. “We are looking for contestants,” she noted, adding that a free T-shirt will be given to each entrant.

Food trucks located at the event will sell items ranging from pizza, chicken sandwiches, and burgers to ice cream.
