Golf tournament will benefit UDS

UnitedDisabilities Services

(UDS) will host its fourth annual golf tournament on Friday, Aug. 18, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. The event will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and its proceeds will be used to support UDS’ service dog programs throughout the county.

Golfers may participate in teams of up to four players, and competitors will have an opportunity to win prizes through a variety of contests. Challenges will include a hole-in-one contest, longest drive competition and putting competition. The event will also feature a silent auction and multiple prize drawings. Registration will be accepted until Monday, Aug. 7. To register for the event or to become a sponsor, visit https://tinyurl.com/udsgolf23.

UDS started the tradition of hosting an annual golf outing in 2020 after exploring various options for fundraisers. The organization had hosted a 5K race at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for a few years and regularly held bingo fundraisers, but it was experiencing challenges with meeting its programs’ financial needs. In 2019, Lori Breece, UDS service dogs manager, suggested hosting a golf outing annually; the event has been supported by the community ever since. “We had great feedback from the first year,” Breece said. “It turned out this is something we could really build and grow on.”

This year, UDS’ goal is to raise $50,000. The proceeds from the golf outing make up the largest portion of the organization’s yearly fundraising efforts, although UDS remains active in the community

through frequent small-scale events. In recent years, UDS has partnered with local businesses and restaurants to hold events that directly support its programs.

adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may

be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of

the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”

COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.

“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”

COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

Doughnut shop to open

Parlor Doughnuts will open on Thursday, Aug. 3, in Mill Creek Square at 2350 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Parlor Doughnuts Lancaster is a craft doughnut and coffee concept that will provide southcentral Pennsylvania with an array of bakery items, including the Indiana-based chain’s original “layered” doughnuts; vegan, glutenfriendly, and keto-friendly products; artisanal breakfast treats; and specialty coffee.

Parlor Doughnuts seeks to deliver superior products at a moderate price while providing exceptional service in a comfortable setting. The Lancaster location marks Parlor Doughnuts’ first location in the Northeast U.S. The Lancaster-based ownership group has plans to open three additional locations across central Pennsylvania.

Parlor Doughnuts also has its sights set on expanding to the coastal Maryland and Delaware Beach area in the near future.

Art studio to exhibit paintings

This summer, Mulberry Art Studios will revisit one of its signature artists and showcase more artworks of the late Lewis Lanza Rudolph. Rudolph was such a prolific artist in his day that even though Mulberry has held three exhibitions of his works over the past few years, the pieces in the upcoming exhibit will all be new to the public. The exhibit will have opening receptions during First Fridays,

Aug. 4 and Sept. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Rudolph began painting in 1966 and continued into the late 1990s, mostly painting in obscurity. He lived his entire life in his childhood home in Red Bank, N.J., and spent his free time alone, walking the boardwalks of Asbury Park to Belmar, N.J., and painting in his basement. He died in 2012 during valve replacement surgery.

Rudolph’s work is predomi-

nately abstract, created in oils on engineered wood with occasional added paper and wax layering. He was favorably critiqued by The New York Times during the time he spent showing his work in New York City and northern New Jersey galleries. Mulberry is located in historic downtown Lancaster at 21 N. Mulberry St. and offers free parking in its private lot. For more information or to schedule a private viewing, contact gallery curator Stephanie Clayton-Kulfan at Stephanie.mulberryart@gmail. com. Readers may also search for “Mulberry Art Studios” on social media for information.

Hymn sing series to end

The Summer Hymn Sing series will conclude with gatherings on Sundays, Aug. 6 and Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. The events will take place at Old Leacock Presbyterian Church, located on Route 340 between Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse.

Participants may choose hymns ranging from wellknown old songs to newer music. The 1904 Estes pump organ will be used to accompany several opening hymns.

LM students help to build a home

Lancaster Mennonite School (LM) students spent the semester in their high school construction class building walls for a new Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) house for a person in Crisfield, Md., whose home was lost due to flooding and water damage.

The MDS is a volunteer network through which various groups within the Anabaptist tradition assist people affected by disasters in North America. MDS responds to disasters,

rebuilds homes, and seeks to restore hope by organizing and empowering volunteers in the U.S. and Canada.

LM agricultural sciences teacher Ryan King worked with MDS on this project. MDS provided the materials and the blueprint for the house, and students cut the wood, built the frame, and delivered the completed project to the new house location in Maryland.

King and one of the construction class students, Owen Horvath, were on-site

at the homeowner’s property this summer helping to set up the framed walls the class had built. They joined a team of MDS volunteers and coordinators to start framing out the new house.

During the project, King and Horvath learned former LM teacher Andy Hershey was present at the MDS site, volunteering his time to construct the house. King has mentored under Hershey when he first started at LM.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum reinvents history

There’s ancient history. There’s modern history.

And then there’s living history. At Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, history is alive and thriving.

A Pennsylvania German heritage site situated at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is an exploratory learning tool and a portal to the locale’s past. Among its highlights are its interactive nature, craft demonstrations and volunteers dressed in period garb.

“George and Henry Landis envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a re-enactment of a previous time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these different living history demonstrations, you see a living portrait of life from 200 years ago.”

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19thcentury atmosphere and others of which serve supportive purposes.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a state-operated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to

Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm

Museum was built.

When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The

visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.

“History is not ‘was’; history ‘is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”

Penn State Extension to offer food preservation workshops

Penn State Extension, Lancaster County, will offer two home food preservation workshops.

The “Pressure Canning” workshop will be held on Monday, Aug. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., and the “Introduction to Drying” workshop will be offered on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The programs will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in home food preservation. Canning and drying are methods of food preservation that allow people to enjoy seasonal foods all year long. While these methods of home food preservation have existed for centuries, much has been learned about the science behind safe canning and drying methods.

In the upcoming workshops, Penn State Extension educators will explain the scientific reasoning behind today’s recommended methods for preserving

products while dispelling food preservation myths and unsafe practices of the past.

In the canning worship, attendees will learn the science behind pressure canning recommendations as well as the basics of using a pressure canner based on current USDA canning guidelines. Pressure canning is the only safe way to can low-acid foods such as vegetables and meats. To register for the workshop by Monday, Aug. 14, visit www.extension .psu.edu/home-food -preservation-pressure -canning or call 877-345-0691.

In the drying workshop, participants will learn various methods of drying, including oven drying, using a dehydrator, microwave drying and air drying; pretreatment steps such as blanching and using anti-darkening soaking solutions to ensure a quality product;f ood safety considerations when processing jerky; what to look for

THURSDAY, AUGUST 31

@ NOON

LOCATED AT: 1398 Pleasantview Rd., Ephrata, PA 17522

DIRECTIONS: From Rt. 322 outside of Lincoln, turn NE on Hackman Rd. Go 1 mile to right turn on Spook Lane, to first buildings on the right.

HOUSE LISTING: An outstanding 102-acre beef/chicken/crop farm. Mostly square plotting, some of the best soil anywhere on the highly productive farm. Beautiful historic Limestone farmhouse dates back to 1764, has desirable 24’x13’ eat-in kitchen w/seating area; 23’x13’ living/ dining room; family room; storage room; ML laundry; mud room; 5 bedrooms; 1.5 bathrooms; beautiful stamped concrete patio; un-improved basement; oil furnace; updated windows; on-site septic.

ANIMAL BUILDINGS: Working chicken broiler house (Tyson contract) is 500’x44’ (max 29,000 birds) w/(2) 24-ton feed bins; 30-KW solar panels; steer barn has loafing area for 165-head beef; 20’x 60’ Harvestor silo (shelled corn unloader), (2) 18’x70’ concrete silos; 10’x55’ concrete solo; Rissler feed mixer; bunk feeder; 85-KW generator w/Cummins diesel engine serves the entire farm; (2) good water wells (tied together) w/UV lights.

STORAGE BUILDINGS: 88’x55’ steel equipment shed, 1 work bay has over-head door, concrete floor; older 60’x30 tobacco barn transformed into vehicle garage w/ finished lower level had small business w/office area. Clay Twp.; Ephrata S.D. This working farm is in Ag. Preserve and the Clean-Green program so taxes are only approx. $8,000.

AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.

OPEN HOUSE DATES: Saturdays, Aug. 5 & 12, from 1-3 PM. Call/Text Auctioneer 717-587-8906.

BRIEF TERMS: $300,000 down payment day of auction, balance in 75 days.

Attorney Tony Schimaneck 717-299-5251. Crops are reserved from the auction. Farm will be sold by the acre x 102.
