Ministry Plans First Banquet With A Fiesta Flair By Ann Mead Ash
Drew and Cindy Metcalf and their two children have been mission workers in Guatemala for the past eight years, helping children in orphanages to overcome trauma and training workers in orphanages to do the same. “We work with orphanages and families to help those children have better mental health,” said Drew. Now, as their ministry expands with locations in Honduras and innercity Chicago in addition to Guatemala Cindy says the focus is changing. “We are switching from the Metcalfs in Guatemala to We Help Children as an organization,” explained Cindy. “It’s not about us, but about lots of layers of ministry. We hope it multiplies to lots of countries even if we are not there.” With a goal of helping children in crisis wherever they are, We Help See Banquet pg 10

Dr. Enos Daniel Martin (left photo) will speak about mental health and prayer at the first Banquet With a Fiesta Flair. The fundraising event will benefit We Help Children, a ministry of the Metcalf family (right photo), missionaries to Guatemala. The banquet will be held at Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens in Gordonville on Sept. 30.
Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its See LCFCA pg 6

The fall term of the Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning at Landis Homes began with a kickoff reception on July 24 at Calvary Church. More than 200 persons participated in the event, which also included celebrating the 10th anniversary of the program with teachers and students. The celebration included remarks from founders Lenora Stern, who helped start the original program at Messiah Lifeways in Mechanicsburg in 2006, and Connie Stauffer, who was instrumental in bringing the Lancaster program to Landis Homes in 2008. During the celebration, Stern and Stauffer were recognized for their work. Following the opening remarks, a new video featuring current participants and board members was shown for the first time. The video, “Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning: 10th Anniversary,” is the creation of a father-and-son team, Roger and David Godin, who conducted the interviews and edited the final version. After the video was shown, the class instructors were introduced and the course titles were announced. The courses and events, which are scheduled to occur from September to December, are open

Peach Fest from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
Two years ago, Cedar Grove Church, 4833 Division Highway, East Earl, changed the name of a fundraiser that had been held for nearly two decades from the Cedar Grove Peach Festival to the Cedar Grove Church Peach Fest and Family Fun Day. The 2018 event, which will include peach-flavored foods and baked goods, a flea market, a book sale, a silent auction, and children’s games, will be held at the church on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The church has installed a hitching post in the parking lot for the use of members of the Plain community who wish to attend. Children’s games, which were introduced at the 2016 fest, will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon. In the past, children’s games and activities have included face painting, sack races, an egg carry race, a tag team race, a hula hoop contest, a water balloon toss, and a peanut scramble. Each child who participates in the games will receive a free serving of ice cream. Many of the foods available for purchase at the event are traditionally prepared with a special focus
on peaches, and this year will be no exception. Breakfast items will include pancakes with or without peach topping and whipped cream, along with sausage and egg casserole, and lunch will feature hamburgers and cheeseburgers, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, and ice cream with peaches. A baked goods table will feature homemade peach pies, as well as sour cherry pies, black raspberry pies, black-bottom cupcakes, cakes, brownies, cookies, multiple flavors of whoopie pies, and a variety of other treats. According to event organizer Betty Ferstler, donations of books for this year’s book sale have been plentiful. “We have a large (number) of donated books that were well taken care of, she said, noting that children’s books, novels, summer reading, and cookbooks will be on display. In addition, the church has collected yard sale items that can be purchased by donation from a special table. Another table will be designated for donated costume jewelry to be sold by the church. Organizer Barb Zook said that inside flea market vendors will include two jewelry makers, one selling silver jewelry, a vendor selling brand-name personal care
products, and representatives of the Carol Stark Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping area teenagers, selling wreaths and plants. According to Zook, several outside flea market spaces will be available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis that morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. According to organizer Barb MacMaster, this year’s silent auction will have at least 20 items on display, including an adult bike, a
bike helmet, theme baskets, and gift certificates to local businesses. MacMaster noted that some funds raised by the silent auction will be designated for a special purpose this year. “There will be a few items in the silent auction (that) the proceeds will (be earmarked for) the church’s Caring Fund, which is overseen by the deacon’s ministry, explained MacMaster. Funds raised by the event will be used for the church’s general fund.

In the past, 20 percent of those funds have been designated for special purposes. This year, 10 percent of the money raised will be donated to Hands Across the Street, an outreach of Columbia Presbyterian Church, and another 10 percent will be designated for another mission project. The church is located at the intersection of routes 322 and 897. Readers who would like more information about the event may visit

The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county. with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s
excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service. “Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help

shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and a buffet dinner. According to HOPE special events coordinator Carley Bilindabagabo, the tournament can comfortably accommodate about 160 golfers per round. Special prizes will be given to golfers who are closest to the pin, make the longest drive, or shoot a hole-in-one. Through working with her savings group, called “Kuwirirana,” which loosely translates to “getting along,” Murungu was able to purchase a sewing machine she can use to make rag dolls. Her life is one of many touched by HOPE, but Rutt asks those who hear about her life to learn from Murungu. “I want to encourage us to get away from the idea that we have the answers and we are just here to help someone by sending them money,” he said. “I want us to look for ways we can learn from
each other (because) we are on a journey together, and we should be praying for each other.” To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links. “We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course,” said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will receive a card, and they fill in the card as they go through the course with the name of the business,” she explained. If the golfer completes the whole card correctly, he or she can be entered into a drawing for a prize. Bilindabagabo noted that

Guest speaker for the evening will be Christian psychiatrist and bishop Dr. Enos Daniel Martin of Elizabethtown, who will speak on the connection between mental health and prayer. Martin was a member of the faculty at Penn State Hershey for 20 years. He
also spent two decades working in prison psychiatry. Martin is currently the medical director of the Naaman Center, a Christianbased alcohol and drug rehabilitation and treatment center. On the topic of prayer and mental health, Martin has said, “Through all of my journey, I’ve become more and more impressed with what God can do through His humble servants who seek His face in prayer and less impressed with what I can accomplish through my training and degrees. Drew made it clear that choosing Martin was born of a concern for children everywhere. “We invite people to come and learn how to help and how to get help for children, he said. “Our vision is not just to help children far away. Drew added that We Help Children is available to help families in need who contact the organization. “God has also given us a vision to do more in the poor communities,â€? said Drew. We Help Children is currently working to set up Children and Family Help Centers in communities so families can receive local help and give help in return. The organization is preparing to start two centers in Guatemala and one in Honduras. The center in Chicago is manned by Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala. “She came to us to ‌ learn how to work with children in crisis, and she is a gifted counselor,â€? explained Drew. Jakus joined the ministry, answering a call to work with children in crisis through a local
church in Chicago. In addition, the Metcalfs often take orphaned children who need extra help into their home and work with children who are aging out of the orphanage to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work, and they graduate from us to more independence, said Drew. Cindy noted that nearly half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help. There is no cost to attend the banquet, but seating is limited to 200 on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are necessary to attend. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Sensenig Family Reunion Scheduled A Sensenig reunion and genealogy research day is planned for Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Hahnstown Mennonite School, 255 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata. Sensenig (Sensenich, Senseny, Senseney, Sensiney) is a Swiss name found especially among the Mennonites of Lancaster County. Attendees will be able to view their Sensenig genealogy and update their family information starting at 10:30 a.m. Attendees should also bring a hot and cold dish if they plan to stay for the meal at noon. A donation will be accepted to cover expenses. The guest speaker, Mark Hostetter, will share about the “Beliefs and Practice of the Mennonite Immigrants.” There will be a committee meeting following the reunion for anyone who is interested in attending. Volunteers are welcome to help update their family’s genealogy. The committee has compiled information on the descendants of Jacob and Maria Krey Sensenig, who immigrated from Switzerland around 1717. The committee will not add births, deaths, and marriages that occur after Dec. 31, but organizers will continue to update events occurring prior to Dec. 31. The work will be offered on a computer disc for a fee. Plans to publish a Sensenig Encyclopedia are under discussion. Maps will be available to visit the Sensenig Farm Cemetery located off of White Oak Road. Anyone who thinks they may be a Sensenig descendent or wants to find out is encouraged to attend the reunion. For more information, readers may call Sally Shirk at 717-464-1614 or email imashirk@comcast.net with subject line: Sensenig Genealogy.

A group of volunteers recently raised $57,000 for Off the Streets. Volunteers for Off the Streets work to help neighbors in Lancaster communities move out of temporary living arrangements, such as hotels and shelters, and into permanent housing. At an April luncheon at Lancaster Country Club called Our Thing in Spring, the committee garnered sponsorships, cash donations, in-kind gifts and auction items to raise the funds. Proceeds will go directly to helping men, women and children pay their security deposit and first month’s rent so they may move into homes. Since 2013, Off the Streets has helped more than 1,500 people, 80 percent of whom are women and children. The organization works through the United Way

The Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP) announced that income guidelines for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program changed on July 1. WIC is a federally funded program for pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers, and infants and children under the age of 5. Eligibility is based on Pennsylvania residency, income and nutritional risk. The new 2018 income guidelines for eligibility start with an annual gross income of $22,459 for a household of one; $30,451 for two; $38,443 for three; $46,435 for four; $54,427 for five; and $62,419 for six. Unborn children are counted when the woman is pregnant. For each additional household member, $7,992 is added. WIC does not require proof of citizenship. WIC families receive nutrition counseling from a nutritionist, breastfeeding support, referrals, and food vouchers redeemable at participating grocery stores for a variety of foods, including milk, eggs, cereal, infant cereal and formula, bread, tofu, jarred baby foods, canned foods, and produce. For more information about WIC, readers may call CAP at 717-509-3686 or 800WIC-WINS or visit www.pawic.com. Pennsylvania WIC is funded by the USDA. More details about CAP are available at www.caplanc.org.

Seasons, a family band that includes Mary-Kate Spring, Peter Winter, Mary-Teresa Summer, Mary-Grace Autumn, and MaryClare Chun (Chun means spring in Chinese), will return to Boettcher House for a free outdoor concert on Sunday, Aug. 12, at 5:30 p.m. The band is known for its blend of Celtic sounds and original music. Making music together has always come naturally for the five siblings of the Lee family who comprise the band. Between them, they play a number of instruments, including piano, harp, Celtic harp, hammered dulcimer, violin, concertina, mandolin, bodhrán, guitar, and pennywhistle. The band is known for engaging audiences with a mix of traditional Celtic songs and original tunes. Mary-Kate, the eldest member, reports that inspiration for the group’s original selections comes from a variety of sources. “We are very inspired by history, legend, and experiences in our own lives,” she recounted. “(We) tend to fuse these influences together. Sometimes a song might have an old feel or an old storyline, but the emotion behind the song connects with something very personal.” She noted that she and Peter often write the initial song and work with the other band members to develop the arrangement. She added that recently Mary-Grace has begun to compose original songs as well. In fact, Mary-Kate noted that Mary-Grace has written a song that has become a staple at Seasons concerts. “My sister wrote a new jig called ‘The Goat on the Roof,’” said Mary-Kate, adding that the song is based on MaryGrace seeing an actual goat standing on a cottage roof in Ireland. “We’ve been playing it at all our shows.” Mary-Kate added that the concerts are filled with songs that make it easy for the audience to join in. “The atmosphere at our concerts is definitely uplifting
(and) energized, and we all tend to have fun onstage and bring a bit of humor to our stage banter,” MaryKate relayed. “We like to form a connection with our audience and make the show very personal.” The band has released a CD, “Songs From Seasons,” that MaryKate stated is selling well, but she added that the group is anxious to make a new album. In addition, a recently recorded track will be included on a Celtic compilation CD, which will benefit Four Diamonds. Along with the CD, the band was involved in a concert with The Celtic Martins and Rebel Heart Irish Dance called “Celtic Celebrations.” Mary-Kate added that Mary-Grace has been especially busy this past year, recently taking first place in the Miscellaneous Instrument Competition for the Mid-Atlantic Fleadh. “In midAugust, she is heading to Ireland to compete in the All- Ireland Traditional Music Competition with musicians from all over Ireland, PLACE YOUR CLASSIFIED AD ONLINE AT WWW.EPCCLASSIFIEDS.COM the U.K., and the U.S.,” Mary-Kate shared.
