TheLancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.
On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400member Lancaster Bicycle Club will stage the 44th edition of its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300 bicycling enthusiasts from points all along the East Coast will descend upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling. The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.
“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations. People want
to see the covered bridges. That’s what draws people.”
From the seven start/finish points, participants are treated to rides of various length - 35, 50, 65 or 100 miles - through the Lancaster County countryside in the areas of Warwick Township, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens and Hempfield. The 100-mile trek incorporates 14 of Lancaster County’s covered bridges into its journey.
“The purpose is to draw in cyclists. It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community.”
All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.
“Lancaster is not flat,” said Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has
In the back of the church where the Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community meets at 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, there is a hallway decorated with historical plaques dedicated to the faith story of Weaverland. “There is a tremendous history and story of God’s faithfulness even through World War I and World War II,” said Brian Martin, lead pastor and bishop, who recounted how pacifists were jailed during World War I, but during World War II lent their talents to the community in work
camps due in part to the farm furlough plan, which was written by Weaverland members Israel B. Good and Ben Weaver, working with Congressman William Griest. “We have a copy of a handwritten letter from Woodrow Wilson (dated Nov. 19, 1917), noting I.B. Good and Ben Weaver and calling the bill a good thing,” said Brian.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, and Sunday, Oct. 8, the church will celebrate “300 Years of God’s Faithfulness” with an event that will include bus tours, worship, a fellowship meal and presentation, and cemetery
the most amount of climbs.”
The Covered Bridge Classic also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put
back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.
Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle
Club has awarded $545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.
“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about

Bishop Timothy Senior has been celebrating Masses with parishioners throughout the diocese this summer as he begins his ministry as 12th bishop of Harrisburg. Senior was named to this position by Pope Francis on April 25, and he was installed on June 21 at Saint Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg.
During his pastoral visits, he will meet with all the priests of the diocese prior to the public Mass. The Masses will begin at 7 p.m. All parishioners are welcome to attend.
Senior will visit the North Lancaster Deanery on Thursday, Aug. 24, at Holy Trinity Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, and he will visit the South Lancaster Deanery on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Saint Leo the Great Church, 2427 Mari-
etta Ave., Lancaster. The Aug. 29 Mass will also be livestreamed; visit www.hbg diocese.org for the link.
Prior to being named the bishop of Harrisburg, Senior was an auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia, serving as the regional bishop of Montgomery County and Philadelphia-South, as well as chancellor of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. While with the archdiocese, Senior served as rector of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese, vicar for clergy and deputy secretary and secretary for the Secretariat for Catholic Human Services in the archdiocese.

children 2 and under and prenatal, but we walk alongside them until they enter kindergarten,” explained Smith.
“My role is split between having a caseload and doing those events for the entire team,” said Smith, who has an office at 1770 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, but also works out of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland as necessary while she continues to serve ELANCO in a limited capacity.
In her role, Smith works with Thrive to Five, the education and development aspect of CAP. “Thrive to Five encompasses the home visiting of Parents as Teachers and Head Start home visiting,” said Smith. “There are also classroom programs such as Head Start and Pre-K Counts,” she noted, adding a nature area for children is located at the CAP offices at 601 S. Queen St., Lancaster.
Some programs Smith works with are offered virtually. “We collaborate with WIC to provide a virtual family cooking series, and we do kindergarten readiness to help prepare families entering kindergarten, so it’s a warm handoff to their district,” she
said, adding that the virtual format makes it easier for families to take part in an evening session where they can review the process of kindergarten transition and to get answers to specific questions.
The program also offers Play and Learns, which usually include up to eight sessions. “Play and Learns are where families can get together to engage in school readiness and relationship-building activities,” said Smith. “We have materials available for all ages.” In New Holland, these are held in the Trinity Lutheran Church and in Manheim Township at the Manheim Township Public Library, but Smith noted that team members hold them in other districts, and that information about locations is available by registering for a newsletter at https://bit.ly/TTFEventNewsletterReg. Smith noted that smaller events include Park Playdates and a STEM series.
“Thrive to Five is a CAP pillar,” said Smith, who noted that the early education piece includes a number of programs which are detailed at https://caplanc.org/ under “Early Education.”

LeeP Productions has announced the fifth anniversary of its program
“Then
Beloved Hymns & Songs
Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham,” and its new, permanent residency at The Barn at Paradise Station.
The venue is the original early 1800s Pennsylvania bank barn on the property of the Red Caboose Motel and Casey Jones’ Restaurant, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks. The barn has been transformed over the last 18 months into a venue that can accommodate weddings, corporate events, theatrical performances, concerts and more. Lighting and sound systems were designed by Stray Production Services of Lititz, and the barn has concert-quality Clair Brothers speakers, a professional lighting array and an HVAC system to keep the indoor temperature comfortable. It is also fully ADA accessible and includes an internal elevator with doors that open on all five floors. The Barn will now serve as a permanent home for LeeP Produc-
tions, which will offer original productions year-round.
On Sunday, Aug. 20, at 2 and 7 p.m., LeeP Productions will host special public performances of “Then Sings My Soul” at The Barn, where the production began on Aug. 18, 2018. The concert will feature well-known hymns and songs, including
“How Great Thou Art,”
“Great Is Thy Faithfulness,”
“I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “In the Garden,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” “My Tribute,”
“Until Then,” “Amazing Grace” and “Because He Lives.” The program will also feature the premiere of a new arrangement of “It Is Well,” written by area composer Tyler D. Hoover.
“Then Sings My Soul” features Ric Zimmerman, Kat Prickett and Sarah Poague, also known as the vocal trio Perfect Harmony. New Holland native Katrina King is the pianist.
LeeP Productions will also host special guest Wayne Atcheson, library historian for Billy Graham and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, sharing person-
al memories and anecdotes of Graham’s life and ministry.
The Aug. 20 events are pay-what-you-will, but reserved tickets are required. Tickets can be reserved by calling 717-2887942 or visiting www.then singsmysoulpa.com. A freewill offering will be accepted at the conclusion of the program, and a portion of the concert proceeds will be donated to the Billy Graham Library in memory of Graham.
The concert will run approximately two and a half hours and will include a 15minute intermission. Con-
cessions will be available for purchase. For an additional fee, a reception with light refreshments will be held an hour prior to each performance. Tickets for the reception can be purchased by calling the aforementioned number or visiting the previously noted website.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its inaugural Covered Bridge Classic.

Coming off the successful celebration of the 90th New Holland Farmers Day Association Fair, president Paulene Redding and Kristie Overly, who handles exhibit premiums, began moving ahead for the 2023 event, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 7.
Last year, the fair’s first fair queen competition winner Kendell Moats placed in the top five in the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF) Queen Contest in Hershey. This year, the competition will be open to young women from the ELANCO, Conestoga Valley, and Pequea Valley school districts. Young women who wish to enter may call 717-355-2529 for more information.
Special vendor and craft bingo events are held to raise money for the fair and specifically for the fair queen competition. A bingo takes place on the fifth Sunday of each month when a fifth Sunday occurs. The next event will be held at Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 29. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. “We need people to come out and support that,” said Overly, who noted that bingo fundraisers are also planned for Sunday, March 31, and Sunday, June 30, in 2024.
The 2023 tug-of-war competition was opened up to members of church youth groups, sports teams, businesses, and more, and five
teams took part, with Weaverland Valley Fire Company taking the top spot. This year, prize amounts have increased to $2,000 and a $500 gift card to Yoder’s Country Buffet, plus trophies for the firstplace winners; $1,000 plus trophies for second place; $750 plus trophies for third place; and $500 plus trophies for the fourth-place team. Each participating team that does not place will receive a consolation prize of $50. This year, the tug-of-war will be held across from the New Holland Farmers Day Association building on Franklin Street. Other venu changes include the flower exhibition, which will be held in the CrossNet Youth Center on Franklin Street, and the entertainment stage, which will move to Towne Centre Green. On Franklin Street between Roberts Avenue and Railroad Avenue, organizers are planning to hold a farmers market during the hours that the fair is open. “We want to fill that up that area to bring the farm back to the farm show,” said Redding, who noted that local vendors wishing to sell produce are being sought.
Volunteers are always needed for the fair. “Case New Holland sponsored volunteer shirts, so each volunteer will receive a commemorative shirt,” said Redding, who noted that volunteers who give two hours may attend the fair banquet and those who work four hours may bring a guest along.
Improvements to the fair

On Oct. 7, bus tours will leave the church at 9 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Tour guide Ken Sensenig, known for his historical knowledge and storytelling abilities, will lead tour takers to more than a dozen sites, including early homes along Weaverland Road, the Peter Martin Cabin, the Pike Meetinghouse, the Groffdale Mennonite Church, and several cemeteries, including the Old Weberthal Cemetery. Lunch will be included with both tours. Individuals interested in taking part may visit www.weaverland.org and click on “Anniversary Weekend Events” to register. There is a cost to take a tour.
On Oct. 8, worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. will include “Remembering Our Story,” with Keith Weaver, retired LMC - a Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches - moderator and bishop, followed by “Pressing Forward in Christ” with Rodney Martin, member of the LMC bishop elder team, and “Inviting Our Story to Be My Story,” by Brian. A fellowship meal following the second service will feature author and historian John Ruth presenting “This Very Ground, This Crooked Affair.” “In the afternoon, there will be a walking tour of the two cemeteries here (at the church),” said Brian, who noted the tours will be led by Sensenig.
Brian, who, like many church members, can trace his family heritage back to early settlers in the area, noted that the first church, a log cabin, was built at the present location in 1733. A stone building was constructed in 1766. “There have been a number of builds over the years,” said Brian, with the present building dating to 1926. “We have expanded at least three times since it was built,” said Brian, who added that the church was remodeled in 1972 and that expansions occurred in 1987 and again in 2015.
The congregation is working on a booklet to commemorate the 300-year anniversary of the church, and Brian noted that small celebrations have been occurring all year. “Each month, we have been including a God Story in our worship service,” he said. “We entitled (that segment) ‘Celebrating 300 Years of God’s Faithfulness: Remembering Our Story, Pressing Forward in Christ.’”

work to build better places to bike and evaluate those efforts as part of a national movement. Each level of the Bicycle Friendly Community award provides a clear path for cities and towns to continuously improve.
One of the significant endeavors contributing to this certification is the expansion of the Bike It Lancaster bike share program. With five more bike stations and 25 additional bikes strategically placed throughout the city, locals and visitors can now enjoy greater access to a fleet of 50 brand new bicycles, making it easier than ever to explore Lancaster city on two wheels.
With the implementation of new bike lanes, improved signage and the expanded bike share program, the city of Lancaster continues to prioritize the safety of all cyclists. These efforts are aligned with the city’s strategic priority of creating a safe and accessible city for all, as well as the Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries in the transportation system.
