Veritas Academy offers Classical Christian education

Lifelong learning is all well and good, but we don’t get a second chance at a formal, scholastic education. When something is that important, it’s nice to have choices.

Founded in 1996 and located at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, Veritas Academy is one of about 190 private schools serving more than

“We provide a Classical Christian education that encourages young men and women to put trust in Jesus.”

14,000 students in Lancaster County. Veritas Academy is a faith-based, nondenominational private school.

Veritas Academy is a member of the Association of Classical Christian Schools. A Classical Christian education emphasizes biblical teachings and relies heavily on a teaching model that includes rhetoric, logic and grammar. In Latin, veritas means truth.

“Veritas Academy does one thing: We provide a Classical Christian education that encourages young men and women

to put trust in Jesus,” said Ty Fischer, who’s been Veritas Academy’s head of school for 28 years. “It doesn’t work for all students, but we try to make it work for as many students as we can. We try to do one thing really, really well.”

“We want to provide a very broad education, and God is folded into everything we do,” continued Fischer. “What I tell parents is that

we’re in a marathon, not a sprint. God’s calling us to trust Him. We really invest a lot in those younger years. We want to polish (students) so they’re ready to take the next step. We want them to follow Jesus with their whole hearts.”

Veritas Academy’s 2024-25 school year will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3, and enrollment numbers about 400 students in preschool through 12th grade. Members of

the student body represent 14 countries and 70 churches.

“The majority of our students are coming from families where our educational vision resonates,” said Fischer. “We draw from families who are mainly conservative, Christian, Bible-loving people who value the outcomes we produce. They want their children to be well prepared. We’re getting outcomes that are meaningful, different

Beyond making services available to veterans, the Lancaster Vet Center (LVC) has a desire to make sure those benefits are being used. LVC wants to serve veterans in much the same way that veterans served others.

“Some veterans will say, ‘Why me? Why do I deserve this?’’’ said Phil Grant, who’s been LVC’s director since February of 2022. “The reason is because your service qualified you for these services. There’s no fee. There’s no cost. The eligibility doesn’t expire. They earned it through their time in the military.”

“Our motto is ‘Connection, Camaraderie, Community,’” continued Grant. “We want to live up to that. When you come here, you’ll be able to connect with your vet community and build that camaraderie. That’s what we’re striving for.”

Located at 1817 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, the LVC serves United States military veterans through one-on-one counseling, group therapy, veteran events and outreach programs. A branch

of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and affiliated with the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital, LVC also works with other outside organizations to resolve any difficulty a veteran might encounter.

“We are here to help veterans and their families readjust to life after their experience in the military,” said Grant. “It’s a lot of moving pieces. We want to help the community know who we are and what we do. We work with veterans for very specific treatment plans. We maintain relationships in the community to get them a higher

LVC serves between 80 and 100 veterans from Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties each month. According to a 2021 census, those counties are home to a total of 26,351 veterans.

“We have vets who have been in combat,” said Grant. “We have some vets who are out of active duty and just want to connect with the community. Some have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Some are just trying to successfully transition from the military and move on. It’s a wide swatch.”

“Once veterans know we exist, some will determine it’s not something they really need, and they’ll spread the word,” added Grant. “These benefits exist because people use them. If they weren’t used the funding would disappear. No one is taking a service away from someone else. Some vets don’t need the services. Some are good right now and can come back if they need to.”

One of 12 veterans’ centers in the state, LVC was established in

2010. As a whole, the veterans’ center program was established in 1979 and now operates 300 branches nationwide.

“We want to give veterans a place where they can come so they can live their best lives, not just for themselves but also for their families,” Grant said. “It’s not just for them; it’s also for everyone in their circle. For the veteran community in general, it’s sometimes hard to come to the table and trust that systems are going to do what they say they are going to do. Where we could do a better job is pounding the streets, getting the word out and showing the veteran community they can trust us.”

Koffee Konnect brings people together

When she moved to Lititz a few years ago, Ann Marie Edwards yearned to make connections.

“I wanted to find my people,” she said. “I wanted to meet people in person.”

Edwards had started a successful book club, and once she moved to Lancaster County from Montgomery County, she became the moderator for a Lititz community gifting Facebook page. Through those connections, she learned of a coffee klatch meeting in Parkesburg, so she reached out to the group’s founder, Kathi Rendall, about starting a local coffee meetup.

“I’m a connector,” Edwards said simply. “It’s easy for me to talk to people and bring people together.”

Koffee Konnect Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata met for the first time earlier this month at New Holland Coffee Co. in Lititz.

“Eight people showed up, including myself,” Edwards said, noting she was pleased with the turnout. “People want to connect with other people, face-to-face, in person.”

Edwards envisions Koffee Konnect as being an organic experience, with

the group meeting at various places throughout the Lititz, Manheim and Ephrata areas on days and at times that suit various schedules.

“The biggest challenge I’ve faced with this has been finding a time that works for everyone,” she said. “So, I don’t want to have a set time and day. The idea is to just get people together to hang out or spend time together when they can.”

SINGING SPRING FOODS

Edwards will propose a meeting date, time and place through the Facebook group page, and others are invited to do the same.

At a meetup, Edwards wears a name tag so people can identify her, and then she encourages participants to introduce themselves.

Beyond that, it’s an unstructured time to get to know new people.

Rendall recently commented on Edwards’ group page for Koffee Konnect, and her words resonated with Edwards.

“She said, ‘It is a revolution of

human kindness, and it can’t be stopped,’” Edwards shared. “There is so much value in human connection. A lot of us have friends on social media, but we don’t feel a connection just chatting online with them. It’s not enough. We’re still lonely. This is an opportunity to establish real connections.”

Edwards noted that response to her page has been positive, with multiple comments from people who are interested in participating in the group.

She hopes people will take that first step and come to a meetup, noting that the group is open to men and women of all ages.

“Many of us wonder, ‘How are people supposed to meet each other?’” Edwards said. “This is an easy way. You just have to have the willingness to say you’re lonely. The risk is minimal. You just have to put yourself out there. You don’t have to have a big personality. You just have to be bold enough to walk in, look for the crazy lady wearing a name tag and when you find me, you’ll feel welcome. You’ll feel like you’ve found a friend.”

CASA event will celebrate transformative powers of heroes

Heroes come in all shapes, sizes and ages. The heroic volunteers of Court Appointed Special Advocates of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties serve, place others ahead of themselves and seek to make the world a better place to live.

CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties’ upcoming gala is the nonprofit’s signature event, partly because it celebrates these heroes. It also brings together volunteers, donors, community members and friends, new and old alike.

“It’s always about putting the best interests of youth first,” said Margie Lamberson, CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties’ director of development. “A CASA (court-appointed special advocate) is appointed by the court, and they’re another set of eyes and ears for the judge,” she explained. “A CASA is always there for (children who have been abused or neglected). That’s their sole purpose. They’re constantly asking, ‘What does the child need? Are they being well cared for? How are they doing in school?’”

The 14th edition of CASA of

Lancaster and Lebanon Counties’ annual Heroes Gala, this year titled “A Storybook Soiree: Changing a Child’s Story One Chapter at a Time,” will be presented from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Foundry48, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. The gala will feature a reception, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, a buffet dinner and a silent auction.

The deadline for purchasing tickets at www.Storybook.Soiree .givesmart.com is Friday, Aug. 30. Individuals can bid on silent auction items or donate directly to CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties at the same website beginning Wednesday, Sept. 4.

“It will be a celebratory evening of recognizing the hard work that the CASA volunteers perform,” said Lamberson. “People can change a child’s story just by being there. It’s an adult evening, but it’s not a stuffy group. This group likes to have fun. It’s an opportunity to do something a little different. Not only will it raise funds to support our mission, (but) it will also raise awareness about what we do.”

At the gala, CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties will also recognize Jenny Habecker of Hummelstown as its Hero of the Year and TriStarr of Lancaster as its Business Hero of the Year.

“Businesses like TriStarr help promote what we do,” said Lamberson. “Jenny always goes above and beyond; she always goes the extra mile to advocate for the youth in her care and make sure they have all the resources they need.”

Nearly 300 people are expected to attend the gala. Organizers are seeking to raise more than $200,000 for CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties.

Ministry plans fundraising banquet

Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM) invites the community to its annual fundraising banquet, Victory: An Evening of Freedom Stories, on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Shady Maple Banquet and Conference Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

“The outpouring at the gala is pretty special. We have generous sponsors,” said Lamberson. “We all have stories. The question becomes, ‚ÄòHow can you change a child’s story?’ We think about the heroes in stories, the characters in stories. Hopefully we’re going to help these children have happy endings to their stories.”

Headquartered at 120 N. Shippen St., Lancaster, CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties currently serves more than 150 at-risk children from infants to 18-year-olds with more than 100 volunteers. In its 15 years of existence, the nonprofit has advocated for more than 1,100 youths.

“Dysfunction in a family can happen anywhere, and it can happen to anyone,” said Lamberson. “It can break a family apart and a child isn’t safe anymore. We’re serving all the children who a judge believes a CASA can (help).”

For additional information about CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties, go to www.casalanc leb.org.

During the event, current and former ROFM students will share their experiences of overcoming addiction and finding hope, and ROFM CEO Tom Carr will share updates on the ministry’s impact and his vision for the future. David Akers, a former Philadelphia Eagles placekicker, will deliver a keynote address focused on perseverance and faith. Cavod will provide a musical performance.

ROFM is a 10-month residential addiction recovery program with the mission to lead men in recovery toward lifelong freedom through life skills education, relationship restoration, and a relationship with Jesus Christ. Participants can work at Freedom Thrift and other community partners to build job skills while earning wages. ROFM also offers transitional living for recent graduates for up to two years.

Students from the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) Music, Worship & Performing Arts Department will present the classic American play “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 6 and 13, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 7 and 14, in Good Shepherd Chapel on LBC’s campus at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster.

“Our Town,” written in 1938, is set in the fictional Grover’s Corners, N.H., between 1901 and 1913, and it depicts the everyday lives of the town’s citizens. The play centers on George Gibbs and Emily Webb, the latter of whom is played by senior musical theater major Elsa Rogers of Columbia, as they navigate love, life, and loss. The show conveys the characters’ reflections on life and death, emphasizing the notion that people often overlook the simple joys of living, while also exploring the themes of love, family, and the passage of time. The show is a play within a play featuring the character of a stage manager who takes the audience on an emotional journey. “Our Town” saw both Broadway
