Student, teacher, coach, principal
BY ANN MEAD ASHSeth Buckwalter, who recently became principal of the Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) middle school, has experience with LMS going back decades.
Buckwalter attended the LMS New Danville Elementary campus in the Southern End as a child, and he went on to attend LMS middle and high school before heading off to college. In 2002, he returned to Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) to teach biologyand anatomy and physiology, as well as serve as the basketball coach. Not only has Buckwalter been a student, teacher, coach, and now principal with LMS, he is also a parent - the father of three LMS students, one in sixth grade, one in eighth grade, and one in 10th.
During the 2022-23 school year, Buckwalter spent part of each day
working with the principal on administrative duties. The training helped him to segue easily into the current job where he continues to teach a few high school classes.
“This is a really unique opportunity because the campuses unified, and last year was our first year all together,” remarked Buckwalter. LMS consolidated the Locust Grove and New Danville elementary schools with the LMS middle and high schools on the 95-acre Lincoln Highway East campus in Lancaster in the fall of 2022. “For the middle school, it was a big transition because we were pulling different elementary and middle schools with different philosophies together,” said Buckwalter. “The focus is to continue unifying and giving direction so that the middle school figures out what it is (now) compared to the two middle schools that it was. That’s a journey.”

Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County are seeing stars
BY JEFF FALKScience is all around us. And for some, the best way to get in touch with the coolest science is to simply look up.
The members of Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) were so enamored of the study of the stars that they formed their own club.
Sixty members strong, the AELC meets for two evening hours on the first Wednesday of every month in
the community room of the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Members of the club derive great enjoyment from observing the night sky, exploring it and sharing information pertaining to it.
“(Astronomy is) the oldest science,” said AELC’s treasurer, Tom Lugar. “Ancients would look to the stars for answers. It’s something that goes back to a time when men looked up to the sky to see stars. It incorporates all the other sciences.”

Healthier homes
BY ANN MEAD ASHResponding to the elevated levels of lead in the blood of children in Lancaster County, Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) - part of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Healthbegan offering Lead-Free Families, a program aimed at eliminating the threat of lead in homes in the county. Out of the Lead-Free Families program grew a new program called Healthy Homes. “Lead-Free Families was all about addressing lead hazards in properties in Lancaster County,” explained Marisol Maldonado, manager of the Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.

presentations and lectures on astronomy, and the last halfhour is typically reserved for discussion. But the AELC also meets once or twice a month outside to observe celestial phenomena as a group, and the club also participates in outreach events across Lancaster County and beyond.
Many members of the AELC own complex equipment used to visually explore space, like telescopes, binoculars and even observatories.
“The goal is to get people
interested in astronomy and what’s going on in space,” said Lugar, a 76-year-old resident of Lititz. “It’s about people who like to do observing getting together.”
The popularity of astronomy exploded in the 1960s and 1970s with the space race and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing on the moon. But while we as a species know more about supernovas, eclipses and black holes than we did back then, there is seemingly an infinite amount
of information about space that is still left to discover.
“There’s a lot happening in the night sky that people aren’t seeing anymore,” said Lugar. “The night sky is one of our natural resources, but now you can’t see it because there’s light pollution. Our goal is to inform the public that there’s a lot going on in the night sky if you know where to look and know where to go.”
As a club, the AELC was formed in the late 1980s by a dozen science-minded individuals at the North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster. The club’s numbers grew in the early 2000s before the AELC relocated its home base to the Lititz Public Library about a decade ago.
“I think the club has reached a point where it should be,” said Lugar. “Some people want to see the lectures and learn, and they may not be interested in seeing the night sky. Then there’s a hardcore group of guys who have a lot of money invested. It’s reached a point where it’s become a place for everyone.”
The AELC sponsors a telescope loan program at the Lititz Public Library. The kit contains telescopes and accessories. For additional information on the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County, go to www.aelc.us
DVGRR posts open house

Buckwalter gave up coaching LMHS boys’ basketball following the 2023 season. “Last year, we had a successful year and a lot of fun,” he said.
The fact that Buckwalter went into education is remarkable considering that as a high school senior he told his mother he had “absolutely” no interest in teaching. However, by his junior year at Bloomsburg University, Buckwalter was reconsidering that stance. “I was a biology major,” he recalled. “I had a semester where I had a bunch of labs, and I really didn’t like the labs.” At the same time, Buckwalter was tutoring another student, and he found he really enjoyed the experience. As a basketball player, he saw the appeal of coaching.
Buckwalter completed his degree and went to work at LMS, later earning a master’s from Eastern Mennonite University. Now, when Buckwalter hears a student saying, “I never want to be a teacher,” he says, “Don’t say that.”
When Buckwalter is not at LMS, he enjoys fishing, hiking, and spending time with his family.
LMS has served students in the Lancaster area since 1939. More information about LMS may be found at www. lancastermennonite.org.

“We quickly realized these homes had other needs outside of lead hazards.” Those needs included missing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, a lack of railings and grab rails, and leaking roofs. “We realized if we address the chipping and peeling paint, the roof leak will just destroy what we have done,” noted Maldonado, who soon was looking for ways to help address other hazards in area homes.
Working with the grants office at LGH, Lead-Free Families applied for a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant to fund Healthy Homes. The threeyear grant of $2 million to address health hazards identified in Lancaster County homes that qualify was up and running in July of 2022.
“(Healthy Homes) is for owner-occupied properties,” explained Maldonado, who noted that the income requirement to qualify for the program is 80% of the area median income for Lancaster County. “For a family of four, the limit is $76,400,” she noted. According to Maldonado, when possible, Lead-Free Families and Healthy Homes work hand in hand, but Healthy Homes is also offered alone for seniors who have needs in their homes but do not necessarily have children living there. Mobile homes located on property owned by the home’s inhabitant may qualify.
Area residents can connect with Healthy Homes through local hubs such as CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, Together Initiative Network in Pequea Valley, or The Candy Factory in Lancaster city. Leaha Shermeyer, outreach coordinator for Lead-Free Families, takes information about both programs to local organizations.
FOR CHILDREN 18 AND UNDER WHO DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE OR HAVE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
“We want to let people know this is not just for families with children,” said Maldonado. “It can be for any home in Lancaster County where they are experiencing something that impacts the health of the family.”
“When we go in, we assess (the home for health and safety hazards),” explained Maldonado. If there are more hazards than Healthy Homes can address with HUD funds the hazards are prioritized. The issues that cannot be addressed by Healthy Homes are pointed out to homeowners, and they are educated about ways to remedy those.
Healthy Homes has set a goal of assisting 176 county homeowners over the life of the grant. “By 2024, we will apply again, so there will be no gap in services,” said Maldonado. Once an applicant is approved, it generally takes about four months to complete repairs. More information about the program may be found at https: //tinyurl.com/2epzkr9x.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) invites quilters, sewists and crafters to the 2023 Quilter’s Yard-age Sale on Friday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Named after the substantial amounts of fabric yardage for sale, the event will take place at the Material Resource Center (MCR), located at 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata.
Throughout the year,
donations of fabric, sewing supplies and unfinished quilting projects are given to the MRC. These items come from people who are cleaning out their sewing rooms, downsizing their homes or closing their fabric stores. Bringing these donations to the MRC keeps sewing and quilting items from ending up in the landfill. It also helps to support the ministries of MCC in relief, development and peacebuild-
ing. Since there is no longer a Quilt Preview in the spring, these items will be available for purchase at the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale.
In addition, the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale will feature unfinished quilt projects, vintage items, quilt books and magazines, patterns, pre-
priced finished quilts, wall hangings, sewing tools and notions and supplies.
Upcycled items handmade by MRC volunteers will also be available for purchase, including woven rag rugs and table runners, tote bags, potholders and aprons made from donated textiles.
Proceeds from the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale benefit MCC’s ministries around the world. MCC is a global, nonprofit organization that strives to share God’s love and compassion for all through relief, development and peace.
For more information about the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale, call 717-733-2847, email EastCoastMRC @mcc.org or visit www. mcc.org/events/quilters -yard-age-sale. Only cash or checks will be accepted at the sale.
Veterans Court seeks volunteer mentors
The Lancaster County Veterans Treatment Court is seeking volunteer mentors for veterans involved in the court’s alternative sentencing program.
The court program is aimed at giving veterans who have committed a crime the opportunity to get their lives back on track. Those who complete the program successfully can have their record expunged, have more serious charges dropped and get a reduced sentencepossibly avoiding incarceration altogether. Program participants may have served in any branch of the U.S. military.
The rigorous program includes four phases, with requirements that participants abstain from alcohol and other drugs, find and maintain a job, participate in community ser-
vice projects, attend court dates and show up for appointments with their probation officer and other court staff members.
The volunteer mentors must be veterans who are willing to take on a program participant as the participant moves through four phases. Mentoring typically involves attending weekly court sessions; keeping in touch with the mentee by text, phone or personal contact; and serving as a supportive presence.
The Veterans Court is one of three treatment courts that have been established in the Lancaster County court system to give a second chance to offenders who have struggled with the use of alcohol and other drugs or who are struggling with an untreated mental illness. The Veterans Court is
administrated by Judge Jeffery D. Wright, and the mentors’ involvement gives another layer of support to the participants who commit to the program.
Many of the veteran mentors who are involved are retired or have flexible schedules that permit them to attend weekly court dates and other activities. Volunteers who are people of color or women are especially wanted.
To learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact Rich Wilson at 717-466-0978 or look for the table sponsored by the Lancaster County Veterans Treatment Court at the upcoming Recovery Day Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Buchanan Park, Buchanan and Race avenues, Lancaster.

Strength training for seniors
A balanced diet and exercise, which includes a combination of aerobic activities and strength training, is necessary to maintain long-term health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to protect their overall health. Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the conditions that come with age. Adults age 65 and older
should aim for the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles. When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow a few safety guidelines.
- Speak with a health care provider first. Before beginning an exercise regimen, people should have a discussion with their general practitioner about their fitness goals. The doctor can recommend strate-

throughout the day as they collaborate on projects or gather with colleagues for lunch. Even those working remotely likely attend meet-
gies that are safe and point out any exercises that may compromise the patient’s overall health.
- Master basic exercises first. Anyone new to strength training, which is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even just using body weight to provide resistance. Resistance exercises can include squats, crunches, modified pushups, planks, and lunges.
- Advance to resistance bands. When a person is
ready to move on to something else, he or she may consider resistance bands as an alternative to free weights. The bands can help a person develop good form before introducing weight. Good form is key to avoiding injury.
- Work with a trainer. Working with a certified personal trainer can help a person learn how to use free weights and strength-training machines correctly. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of
sets and repetitions to gradually build and maintain muscle mass. If someone decides against hiring a trainer, gym staff members may guide them on using equipment and demonstrate proper form.
- Exercise with a friend. Strength training with a friend or family member can provide motivation and keep people on target to meet their goals.
- Build up gradually. A person’s first strength training session should only last 10 to 15 minutes, according to
Tiffany Chag, a strength coach at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. This time limit enables the person to gauge soreness. Anyone new to strength training should wait until soreness abates before beginning the next session.
Exercises that build strength are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior. These exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.
ings virtually and communicate with co-workers by phone or email. Without co-workers around, retirees may sometimes find their social lives lacking. People may need to take steps to strengthen their social capital, a term that describes the strength of a person’s social relationships and the extent to which people feel physically and emotionally supported by their communities. Retirees may look to a variety of activities in the community to keep them connected with others.
- Join a club or group. Individuals can identify an activity they find interesting and determine if there is a way to get involved with it in their community. Senior centers or adult activity providers may sponsor local programs, and libraries often host a variety of club and interest group meetings.
- Participate in worship. Many older adults find they want to reconnect with their faith at this point in their lives, even if attending services wasn’t a top priority earlier in life. Reach out to a local house of worship and find out when services take place and what activities are available.
- Read to children. Seniors can volunteer their services at a library by reading to youngsters. Interacting with other generations can be inspiring.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry. Times continue to be challenging for many people who may find it hard to cover their expenses, and soup kitchens and food pantries can be a saving grace
for those who might otherwise miss meals. Volunteering one’s time at these organizations can help make a difference in the lives of community members.
- Become a substitute teacher or paraprofessional. Many schools are experiencing shortages of qualified staff members. Retirees may find a place helping to shape the minds of youngsters by volunteering at schools or taking on part-time jobs in the classroom.
- Become a mentor. Seniors can share their knowledge and experiences with a student, family member or other community member. Mentors needn’t have an advanced degree or special certification, but they should have more experience in a given field or subject than the mentee. The mentor should ask the mentee about his or her goals and expectations, listen carefully and then respond to the questions and needs of the mentee and adjust the material discussed as necessary to
help the mentee meet his or her goals. Sessions should be planned at a time that suits both the mentee and mentor. Mentoring does not only benefit mentees; for mentors, it can keep an aging mind sharp, provide additional meaning and purpose to life and foster social connections.
- Befriend neighbors. A passing greeting may have been the norm when people were busy working, but once people are retired, they may have more opportunities to get to know their neighbors better. Neighbors may even take turns hosting gettogethers. Moving to a retirement or active adult community may facilitate such friendships.
- Volunteer with local government. Retirees may enter a local school board election or try to become a member of the town council.
These are just a few of the many ways that retiree may get involved in their community and maintain strong social ties.
Engaging hobbies for seniors
The value of hobbies is undeniable. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that employees who engaged in creative hobbies outside of work were more creative on work projects and had a better attitude on the job. A separate study published in Psychosomatic Medicine in
2009 reported that individuals who engaged in enjoyable leisure activities had lower blood pressure and a smaller waist circumference.
The beneficial nature of hobbies is good news for seniors, many of whom have ample time for leisure activities. Whether seniors are retired or still working but don’t have the responsibili-
ties of parenting, the following are some fun and engaging hobbies to fill that free time.
- Cooking: Years spent hustling and bustling through the daily grind of personal and professional obligations might have forced individuals to focus on cooking that emphasized

websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com have made it easier than ever for individuals to learn about their roots. Seniors can contextualize the information provided by genealogy websites by writing about their personal experiences and sharing what they know about the lives of their parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members.
- Gardening: Seniors looking for hobbies that get them out in the great outdoors need look no further than their own backyards. Gardening can benefit the body in myriad ways. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS), gardening has the potential to burn as many calories as working out in the gym. In addition, the MCHS notes that individuals who grow their own fruits and vegetables are more likely to
include those foods in their own diets, thus saving them money at the grocery store and also increasing their intake of nutrient-rich foods.
- Swimming: Swimming is an ideal exercise for seniors, as it’s low-impact but still a great way to utilize the entire body. A 2007 study published in the journal Quality of Life Research found that water-based exercise improves older adults’ quality of life and decreases disability. A separate study published in 2008 in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness found that water-based exercise can improve or help to maintain bone health in post-menopausal women. These are just a few of the many hobbies seniors can pursue as they look for positive and fun ways to spend their free time.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Spring Sale - March 9, 2024 PAYMENTS:
National flag-waving event posted
Volunteers, Gold Star families, veterans, first responders, and their families will participate in a national flag-waving event intended to recapture the American pride and unity that was expressed in the days following 9/11. Americans are invited to join national nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) in waving flags on Tuesday, Sept. 12, between 9 and 10 a.m.
The event will be hosted live on WAA’s official Facebook page and broadcast over
Wreaths Across America Radio. The broadcasts will include interviews and stories from volunteers, supporters, Gold Star families, veterans, first responders, and members of the next generation.
WAA gathers every Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. to raise the American flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance at the Freeport Flag Ladies Monument in Jonesboro, Maine, near the area where balsam is harvested to make wreaths for placement on veterans’ graves
on National Wreaths Across America Day each December.
The monument was built by WAA in partnership with its founder, Morrill Worcester, in September 2019, after the Freeport Flag Ladies retired following 18 years of waving the American flag in Freeport, Maine, each Tuesday since 9/11.
WAA encourages the American public to join this weekly tradition starting on Sept. 12 and share their pictures and videos on social media using
the hashtag #FlagsAcrosstheCountry. People may also submit videos and photos at http://WreathsAcross America.memfox.io/flag waving. They may also share via their own social media channels and follow Wreaths Across America on Facebook.
This year, National Wreaths Across America Day will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16. To sponsor a wreath for a veteran or to learn about volunteering, visit www.wreaths acrossamerica.org.

Dart Container, a provider of sustainable food service packaging solutions, recently announced its sponsorship of and participation in the Conestoga River Cleanup held on Aug. 12.
The event, held in partnership with the Conestoga River Club, witnessed the collective efforts of numerous volunteer partner organizations dedicated to preserving and maintaining the beauty of the Conestoga River, collecting nearly three-quarters of a dumpster full of trash along with 12 tires.
Dart Container, known for its commitment to social
responsibility and sustainability, registered 24 volunteers who participated in this year’s cleanup event, providing 72 hours of volunteer services. In total, around 40 volunteers took part in the cleanup, which covered the Conestoga River around West Earl Community Park and Sylvan B. Fisher Township Park in Brownstown.
The Conestoga River flows for more than 60 miles, joining the Susquehanna River below the Safe Harbor dam. The river is popular for canoeing, kayaking, tubing, fishing and other recreational activities, underscoring the importance of keeping the waterway clean.

Titan Gilroy named keynote speaker
Titan Gilroy will be this year’s featured keynote speaker at the MX2023 Manufacturers’ Expo to be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the York Expo Center. Gilroy is CEO and founder of TITANS of CNC. Founded in 2005, the company specializes in manufacturing parts for the medical, subsea and aerospace industries.
Family Chiropractic JangDhari
Gilroy began his career in manufacturing when he walked away from his professional boxing career and his rough past, including prison time, and found himself in a CNC machine shop where everything in his life changed. He shared his story on the
reality series “Titan: American Built,” which was dedicated to American manufacturing.
In the third season he went to San Quentin Prison and built an Elite CNC Academy. It was because of this experience that Gilroy developed the free TITANS of CNC Academy curriculum, which is now backed by aerospace companies and industry partners like Kennametal, Mastercam and Mitutoyo, and endorsed by more than 1,000 companies and agencies, including NASA, Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Disney.
Gilroy will share a message of hope and redemption, along
with practical tools for students, educators, shop owners and business leaders.
MX2023 is a manufacturing trade show established to help industries build local supply chains, exhibit capabilities and increase business opportunities and new customers.
For more information about the MX2023 Manufacturers’ Expo, visit www.masc pa.org/expo, call 717-8433891 or email office@masc pa.org. Exhibit spaces are limited, and admission tickets are available for a fee, which includes access to the keynote speaker breakout sessions.
