Gifts That Give Hope Fair To Move To New Location

The Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, founded by Jenn Knepper (third from right), will be held on Dec. 7 at The Junction Center in Manheim. Representing a sampling of the organizations that will take part in this year’s event are (from left) Feleen Nancarvis of Lancaster Meals on Wheels, Beth Weaver of AIM to Empower, Mustafa Nuur of Bridge, and Deb Becker and Carla Horn of Connection Ubuntu.

Not long after Danielle Elliott received the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award from Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster at the Inn at Leola Village on May 29, she headed for the Pocono Mountains, where she works at a summer camp for children. At the start of the school year, she returned to her job as a learning support teacher at Burrowes Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster. For Elliott, who has signed up to volunteer for her sixth season with GOTR, working with children fulfills an important purpose. “Emotional and behavioral (needs) are what I am drawn to,” said Elliott, who noted that she was abandoned by a parent as a child. A Showcase Of Art And Music At Boettcher House By Ann Mead Ash

When artists congregate, they often like to discuss their creations with each other. This was the case when painter Stephen Gambone and mixed-media artist Carrie Monique Daigle first saw Paris Llanso’s brightly colored painting called “Citrus Splash.” “I love how the buildup of paint is thick and structural,” commented Daigle. “That’s (called) impasto,” added Gambone. The work of Gambone, Daigle, and Llanso will be among the creations of the nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds, 2369 Lititz Pike, See Art Show pg 3

Artists who will exhibit at the annual Landis Woods Outdoor Art Show on the Boettcher House grounds on Sept. 28 will include (front, from left) Lisa Madenspacher, Carrie Monique Daigle, (back) Stephen Gambone, Paris Llanso, and Jennifer Cavalcante.

Each recipient of the Ellen Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to pay it forward to a charity of her choice. Elliott has chosen to give the funds to Aevidum, an organization that works to create positive mental health environments in schools and communities across the nation. She would like to see the principles of Aevidum instilled in students in the School District of Lancaster, especially in elementary schools. “I am big on suicide awareness, and I don’t think the emotional needs of younger

“When I was little … my teachers were there for me,” she said. “That’s what drew me to teaching and working with children. I never want (my students) to feel as alone as I did,” she said. “I want them to feel secure and have one person they know they can always turn to.” Elliott received her teaching certification from Millersville University, and she is currently attending graduate classes at the school. However, when one of her students was taken to the hospital emergency room, Elliott left a class at Millersville to be with her. When she arrived, medical personnel refused to let her see the patient, but the patient’s mother told them to treat her like family, and Elliott stayed with the student until the student was released. That type of dedication inspired every third- through fifth-grade girl on her GOTR team to nominate her for the Ellen Award. Elliott was also nominated by other teachers and parents of her GOTR team members. “One of the parents expressed how I would go out of my way (to help the girls),” said Elliott. “A lot of the girls told me they had written how important it is that I talk about selfimage, and that helps them to feel more confident in themselves.” GOTR team members are not the only ones who benefit from Elliott’s coaching. “I get to see my students in a whole different light, and it helps me step back and understand who they are and

Several students at East Stroudsburg University studied abroad this summer during a three-week trip. Erin Grucelski of Leola studied in Spain. In conjunction with the Universidad de Cordoba in Spain, three courses were offered and students chose two. One was a 400-level course designed specifically for

Spanish majors and minors, and the other two were 200-level Spanish courses designed for any student on the trip. Classes were in session weekdays in the morning and early afternoon, followed by time for excursions later in the day. Every Saturday the group visited major cities in Andalucia.

The Quittapahilla Highlanders will present a concert on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center on Cocalico Street in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Refreshments will be provided. The concert will be held rain or shine. Weather permitting, the Lebanon County-based Highlanders band will play its bagpipes and drums outside the Eicher Arts Center, so attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs. The Highlanders began about 25 years ago in the Annville area of Lebanon County. In the Scottish highlands, bands often took their name from a nearby body of water, so the Quittapahilla Highlanders took theirs

from Quittapahilla Creek in Lebanon County. Quittapahilla is a word Native Americans used that means “a stream that comes out of the ground under pines.” The band uniforms are inspired by the traditional uniforms of the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland. The program is part of a series of free, Sunday afternoon cultural and entertainment events hosted by the Eicher Arts Center. While admission is free, donations will be accepted for the Eicher Arts Center. The building was constructed by the Eicher family for the family farm in the early 18th century. It served as a hotel for much of the 20th century.

Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will host Randall Wenger, chief clerk of the Lancaster County Board of Elections, on Thursday, Sept. 12, from noon to 2 p.m. Wenger will offer a brief overview as well as a hands-on voting and scanning demonstration with the new ADA compliant ballot marking device, which will be available for voters in the November election. The traditional optical scanner, which most voters have used in the past, will also be available. Lancaster County’s upgraded voting system offers a voterverifiable paper record for every voter. Most voters will hand mark a paper ballot with a pen, just as 94 percent of voters have done in the previous voting system. New for the November election, people who are unable to hand mark a paper ballot will be able to use an ADA compliant ballot marking device. The demonstration will allows attendees to try the new system in a relaxed environment. The event is free and open to the public.

The seventh Lancaster Printers Fair will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21, in downtown Lancaster. The event started in 2013 as a nod to Lancaster’s place in printing history and features vendors and suppliers of letterpress equipment, foundry type, cards, posters, broadsides, ephemera, and more. To kick off the two-day event, members of the the .918 Club, which is organizing the fair, will show “Pressing On,” a film about the craft of letterpress printing, on Sept. 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Candy Factory, located near the club’s Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There is no cost. The museum also will be open that evening with demonstrations and hands-on activities. For the second year, three exhibits will be on display that night. Prints by Rebecca Blossler will be exhibited at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen,

335 N. Queen St., through October, and the guild will remain open until 9 p.m. on Sept. 20. Paper pulp sculptures by Angela Heaps will be in the windows at Madcap & Co., 310 N. The street will be filled with vendors from across the region selling printing supplies and handmade products, and there will be printing demonstrations and food vendors. Activities for children will also be available. As a part of the street fair, the

public can learn about H.N. Werkman, a printer from the Dutch province of Groningen during World War II, from noon to 3 p.m. Attendees can also try their hand at creating and printing a keepsake postcard. Returning this year will be a beer and burger garden presented by Voodoo Brewery and Cabalar Meat Co. A percentage of the sales will go to the .918 Club’s mission at the Heritage Press Education Center on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Other food available will be Auntie Anne’s pretzels, as well as ice cream by Splits and Giggles. Beverages will

nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local and global contexts. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are

yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a stamp card that will direct them to the eight booths at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education

or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would

be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated

with me,” Knepper said. To learn more, readers may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org/ lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.

Lady Bucks Go 2-1 in Non-League Soccer by Leah Sintic

Buckskin girls’ soccer launched their 2019 season with a trio of nonleague matches-claiming two victories and dropping one. Thursday marked the first blemish on the Buckskin record, a 2-1 loss to the Falcons of Lower Dauphin. The scoreboard blazed a different story in last Tuesday’s 4-1 triumph over Governor Mifflin, even though the CV squad was forced to make adjustments due to injuries. “I am happy that we are seeing some players step in and play in some positions that they are not comfortable in,” expressed head coach Keith Nagley. Comfortable or not, the girls produced an electrifying second half to run away with the victory after an even first forty. Mifflin struck first, securing a goal after 18 minutes, but CV’s Ana Weis

retaliated to level the scoreboard 1-1 before the half. Ten minutes into the latter half, the game took a drastic turn in Buckskin favor as Gabriella Barone-Graybill buried a penalty kick in the netting, followed by back-to-back goals from Madison Delgado within the next five minutes of play. Previously, the crew kicked off their season with a 4-0 shutout at Cedar Cliff, putting in three goals in the first 30 minutes. Weis found the netting twice in the half and Kayla Weaver supplied the third success. A quieter second half ensued, but just before the final buzzer, Delgado capitalized on a trip down the field for her first goal of the season. Exciting days are ahead for CV girls soccer, hoping to make the early season win streak a season-long trend. TENNIS CV tennis steamrolled through the early season, taking each competitor

in stride to rack up a collection of six consecutive wins and have yet to be handed a defeat. The squad aced a pair of league tests last week taking down Hempfield (6-1) and Cedar Crest (7-0), the two most recent causalities to have succumbed to the Buckskin pressure. “All have been working hard and using not only their talent and skill, but strategy throughout their individual matches,” credited head coach Dale Gregg. Jacquelyn McBride, playing at No. 1 singles, and Ellie Kready (No. 4 singles) have each amassed six individual victories to propel the team to their undefeated status. Prior to last week’s two-win performance, the club took down Cocalico (7-0), Elizabethtown (7-0), Lampeter-Strasburg (6-1), and Manheim Central (6-1). In doubles action, Rachel Eby and Sophia Steed join Kready and McBride

with flawless 6-0 records. “We have a good number of returning players, and they have set the tone for the team,” elaborated Gregg. “The veterans have welcomed the new players onto the team, creating a tight, unified, and caring squad.” VOLLEYBALL Lady Buckskin volleyball experienced split results in their first week of competition dropping a nonleague showdown to Ephrata, but clinching a pivotal league conquest over Penn Manor. Thursday night’s home bout went in favor of the Ephrata Mounts, 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 7-25, 25-11). CV caught fire in the third set after dropping two, but the recovery was squelched by the Mounts with the match-winning fourth set. Seniors Charlize Miller and Savannah Byers paced the Buckskin offense with 20 assists and 10 kills respectively, while CeCe Leininger powered a

pair of aces over the net. On Tuesday, the CV club thrilled their home crowd with a 3-1 league victory over Penn Manor (25-18, 2426, 25-18, 27-25). The Buckskins came out strong, capturing the first game, but were forced to regroup after a strong showing from the Comets in game two erased their initial advantage. Byer’s game-high 15 kills kept momentum churning in CV favor as they claimed the third set and headed into the fourth to close the deal. The Comets created a surge of their own leading most of the fourth set, but the Bucks overcame a five-point deficit to retake the lead and clinch the contest. “I loved the fight we showed coming back in the fourth game, catching them at 23, then finishing it off 2725,” celebrated head coach Dewey Barlow. Leininger put up three aces, Miller supplied 21 setter assists, and Lexi McEvoy provided a trio of blocks in the

victory. “It was a good win for us. It was really a team win all around,” summarized Barlow. FIELD HOCKEY Girls’ field hockey has certainly given their fans an exciting preview of things to come, claiming both of their opening matches on the road to give them an untarnished 2-0 record. Last Thursday, the Lady Bucks took on Warwick for their first league contest of the year, and, thanks to a hattrick of goals from Abby Morley, bested the Warriors, 3-2. Two of Morley’s goals came in the first half, coinciding with a pair of goals from Warwick’s Lamya Mejias, to level the scoreboard heading into the second half. Though Warwick displayed an intense offense, outshooting the Buck’s 7-4, CV keeper Brooke Eberly rose to the challenge, scooping up five saves to thwart the attack. Persistent on the opposite end of the field, Morley tucked in her third

limited to two touchdowns and one successful PAT. Quarterback, Bradley Stoltzfus, found Zach Fisher for a completion twice against New Oxford, including a 59-yard pass in the second. CV kicker Nathan Heck tucked in the extra point after the fourth quarter touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to compete with New Oxford putting up points in all four quarters. In their season opener against Penn Manor, the Bucks and Comets were knotted up at 13 heading into the final quarter, but the Comets managed to close the deal with their third touchdown of the night giving them a six-point edge, 19-13, as time expired. Fisher and Eddie Hernandez were the recipients of Stoltzfus’ two touchdown passes, combined for 92 yards. A trip to Spring Grove on Friday, September 6th marks the third in a trio of nonleague matchups for CV, before a highly anticipated showdown against Lampeter-Strasburg to kick off league competition. The Lampeter-Strasburg game holds extra significance as the annually held Lampeter bowl, a long-standing rivalry with Conestoga Valley representing East Lampeter, and the

Pioneers on behalf of the West. CV enters this year’s bowl, slated for September 13th, eager to remain in custody of the coveted Lampeter trophy, having reclaimed possession in last year’s clash, triumphing 20-7, after a seven-year drought. CROSS COUNTRY Cross country’s first league meet of the season is in the books, with the Buckskin’s racing alongside Ephrata and JP McCaskey, but CV was unable to pull a team win for either the boys or girls on their home course. For the boys, McCaskey ran away with the top three times of the race, all under 18 minutes, but Buckskin harrier, Emmanuel Gitonga, was in hot pursuit, crossing in 18:06 for a 4th place finish and a highlight to the Bucks performance. Conestoga’s Jesse Kanagy was the next to cross for CV, finishing 12th (19:12), while Dante Velasco and Tyler Slingluff took came across nearly simultaneously to claim the 14th and 15th spots. The girls had a similar standout in sophomore Kylynn Frankford who took fourth, completing the course in 21:52. Brittany Johns (22:21) and Emily Castronova (22:54) came in ninth and tenth respectively.

With health and injury always maintaining a factor in athletics, the CV squads were forced to compete without some of their top runners. “Emmanuel and Kylynn both ran good races to lead the team,” acknowledged head coach Mark Amway. “The girls stepped up with the absence of one of our top runners due to an ankle sprain, and the boys are also down one of our top runners.” Looking ahead, the teams are anticipating being at full strength and improving individual times in the weeks to come.

goal of the contest giving CV the win. The previous Friday, CV opened their season with a dominant 7-0 shutout of Northeastern in nonleague play. Morley produced a goal in each half, accompanied by two apiece from Carli Eberly and Elli Livingston, and one from sophomore Lillian Buckwalter. BOYS’ SOCCER Three nail-biting games into their schedule, CV boys’ soccer picked up a pair of victories over Conrad Weiser and Lancaster Mennonite, but fell behind Lower Dauphin-all three games determine by a one goal differential. Last Thursday the Bucks traveled to Lower Dauphin and found themselves down by two midway through the game. Fighting back with a second half goal from Owen Linder and a few close calls, the Bucks fell just short of a comeback, 2-1. Two days before, the tenacious squad celebrated a different comeback story, with an impressive comefrom-behind surprise over host Conrad Weiser, capturing the win, 3-2, after trailing 2-0 at the half. Things looked bleak for CV after CW’s Grant Miller broke the goal line twice in less than two minutes time during the first half, giving the Bucks quite the uphill battle for the remaining 40. Refusing to quit, the Buckskins took the field in the second half ready to prove their worth. Goals from Ethan Bredeman and Logan Weaver evened the playing field and the contest came down to the final minute when CV’s Richard Valverde-Gomez connected for the Buckskins golden goal. In their home field, season-opener against Lancaster Mennonite, the Bucks pulled out another close victory, shutting out the Blazers, 1-0. The lone goal of the contest was supplied by Dominic Brabant, assisted by Valverde-Gomez. FOOTBALL Buckskin football is gearing up for a rebound after two early season losses, falling 29-13 to New Oxford, and 19-13 to Penn Manor in their earliest non-league matchups of the 2019 season. area and to spur community action. Through the collaboration, now in its third consecutive year, PSECU will contribute up to $20,000 to the cause and encourage its members living in CPFB’s 27-county region to donate. In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the CPFB will host its annual Hunger Heroes Awards at the annual Hunger Action Day breakfasts in the food bank’s healthy food hubs in Harrisburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Williamsport on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Members of the community are invited to register to attend the free events at www.centralpafoodbank.org/ham. To help bring additional awareness to the issue of hunger, the CPFB has asked community leaders to be “celebrity volunteers” and help pack boxes, visit food distribution sites, and raise awareness throughout the month of September. These celebrity volunteers include public officials, corporate executives, nonprofit leaders, media personalities, and others. During Hunger Action Month, PSECU will match donations made through the CPFB’s virtual food drive up to a total of $15,000. This online initiative allows businesses and groups to raise funds to support the food bank’s work. On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. Readers may learn more or make a donation at www.centralpafoodbank.org/psecu. In addition to virtual food drive donation matching in September, PSECU will provide the CPFB with a $5,000 sponsorship, bringing its combined contribution to a potential $20,000. According to CPFB, each dollar donated to the food bank equates to six meals, so PSECU’s donation could provide up to 120,000 meals for those in need. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank. CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need. To learn more about hunger and Hunger Action Month events, activities, and ways to get involved, readers may visit www.centralpafoodbank.org/ham. The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will present a concert by Genticorum on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Owen Salon at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Having performed more than 1,000 concerts in more than 15 countries over the past 18 years, the Quebec trad group has been a fixture of the international world, trad, folk, and Celtic music circuit. Firmly rooted in the traditions of its native land, the trio also incorporates North American and European folk cultures into its music. The group’s sound weaves fiddle, flute, and accordion work, vocal harmonies, foot percussion, and guitar accompaniment. Pascal Gemme is well known in Quebec’s traditional music scene. Known as much for his original compositions as for his interpretation of traditional tunes, he is the band’s fiddler, singer, and arranger, helping to produce six Genticorum CDs. From a young age, he was captivated by the fiddle music and songs of his native province. After graduating from Montreal’s St. Laurent College with a degree in composition and band arrangements, he immersed himself in the traditional music around him, playing, collecting, and recording music found all over Quebec.
