Medal is cherry on top of Casey Kaufhold’s Olympic experience

Olympic athlete. United States of America Olympic athlete. United States of America Olympic medalist. Each has its own specific ring to it. For Casey Kaufhold, they’re titles that all hold special meaning.

At 20 years of age, Kaufhold is, and always will be, all three. The 2022 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School is now more than a month removed from competing at her second Summer Olympic Games, and in many

ways, the glow has yet to wane.

“I’m still riding the high because I worked so hard to get there,” said Kaufhold, one of the finest female archers in the world. “I’m definitely still settling in from the experience. So few people get an opportunity to compete at the Olympics. So, to do it twice by the age of 20 and get a medal, I’m grateful and thankful.”

“I think the best part of competing was having my family there,” continued Kaufhold. “I also competed at Tokyo (in 2021), and I couldn’t have my family there (because of the pandemic).

To get a medal and have them there was really special.”

On Aug. 2 in Paris, during competition in the 2024 Summer Olympics, Kaufhold and teammate Brady Ellison captured a bronze medal in the mixed team archery event with a 6-2 victory over India. The medal was the first ever for the United States in the mixed team archery event, and Kaufhold became the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in archery since 1988.

Earlier in the Games, Kaufhold had finished 17th in the women’s

Young people are ambassadors for what Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) stands for.

The next major event in LCCF’s yearlong celebration of its 100th anniversary will focus on the future and empowering youths. It’s a great way to start the next hundred years.

In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

(EPC). As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster. Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue and Homage. Guests may enjoy

“Young people are the future,” said Val Schade, who’s been LCCF’s communications manager for three years. “We believe if we embolden children and young adults, we are all impacted. We’re taking an opportunity to look back, while looking ahead. Thanks to the past 100 years that saw opportunities for several generations, we are a community brimming with promise. We think it’s our turn to make history and change the next 100 years.”

LCCF’s evening of looking ahead is being called Elevating the Next Generation. It’s being staged in multiple rooms of Millersville University’s student center, 21 S. George St., Millersville, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Open to the public and free to the attend, the event is geared toward young people from middle school all the way through college age.

“We’re excited about this event,” said Schade. “The goal is to invite and inspire the Lancaster County community to think about how important the next generation is. It’s youth-centered and youth-designed, but it’s not only for youth. It’s meant to be energetic and casual.”

LCCF’s Elevating the Next Generation event will feature food trucks, a gaming truck with over 100 games, a wellness room with interactive and mindful activities and a performance by the Crispus Attucks Community Center’s drill team and band squad, the Infamous Unstoppables. In addition, the event will include a session on food sustainability, displays of student artwork and poetry readings.

Also, the next round of recipients of LCCF’s Shaping Tomorrow awards and scholarships will be announced that evening.

“We’re hoping for a large turnout,” said Schade. “We recognize that if the event is open to young people that they’re going to be accompanied by family. It’s youth and family friendly.”

Elevating the Next Generation is the third of four events LCCF is conducting to commemorate its founding in 1924. The first two were staged at Rock Lititz in March and at Buchanan Park in April, and the fourth, titled Protecting Our Planet, will be held at the Farm at Eagles Ridge on Thursday, Oct. 17.

“Lancaster County Community Foundation stewards the county endowment, and we harness the power of community and local philanthropy to make Lancaster a better place to live,” said Schade. “We are here because of the work and hope and vision of people who came before us. Over the last century, LCCF has donated more than $60 million to local causes. LCCF’s signature event, ExtraGive, has generated more than $100 million in donations for local organizations.

“Lancaster has always been a county of change-makers and hard workers,” said Schade. “The endowment has always been shaped by community members with that in mind. The beautiful thing about the endowment is it can be flexible and that it can be used to meet needs in the moment.”

The prize drawing will also feature tickets to local attractions such as American Music Theatre, Field of Screams, Decades and Go ‘N Bananas.

Attendees will have an opportunity to look behind the scenes at EPC during a self-guided tour of the plant, which will offer a close-up look at each department and how the company’s publications, including weekly newspapers, are made.

Multiple community organizations and local first responders will be present at the open house, including a firetruck from West Hempfield Fire & Rescue, an officer from East Hempfield Township Police Department and the Lancaster County 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club. Representatives from local chambers of commerce serving Lancaster, including the Lancaster Chamber, the Mount Joy Area Chamber, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber and Northern Lancaster County Chamber, will also be in attendance.

“In the third generation of this company, it’s important for us to continue the legacy of what was started,” said Jocelyn Engle, EPC’s publisher. “It’s all about supporting local organizations and understanding what serves our communities in each area.”

individual archery event and was part of a USA squad that came in ninth in the women’s team archery competition.

“The women’s individual and team events were the first two events I competed in, and they didn’t go the way I would’ve liked,” said Kaufhold. “I struggled with nerves. When I went into the mixed team competition, I wanted to stick with my process. I didn’t feel I shot as well as I could have, and I wanted to show what I could do. I wanted to shoot the way I was in practice. My goal was to come home with a medal. I didn’t want to come home empty handed.”

At the Summer Olympics in Tokyo - which had been postponed a year because of COVID-19 - the then-17-year-old Kaufhold finished 17th in the individual women’s archery competition and was part of an American group that came in seventh in the women’s team archery competition.

“Tokyo was totally a different experience,” said Kaufhold. “It’s hard to even compare. I was 17, and I felt like I was new to everything.”

“For archers, the Olympics are our biggest event,” Kaufhold added. “Because it’s every four years, there’s a lot of hype around it, and it’s very prestigious. It’s

hard to get there, and you can feel the pressure when you’re there.”

Since taking up the sport at the age of 7, Kaufhold has combined dedication, talent and skill with family tradition to become one of the top female archers nationally and internationally. It’s a foundation that has put her in position to compete at the next few Summer Olympic Games.

“I’d like to compete in Los Angeles in 2028, and in 2032, in Australia,” said Kaufhold. “I’m pretty locked in as far as my career goes. I’m someone who likes having a plan and I like having things set up. The Olympics have been a goal of mine since I was 12. To get there twice, feels great. It’s very fulfilling to have accomplished it by 20.”
